To find out whether a Steam Next Fest demo works on Steam Deck, check the demo’s own Steam listing—not just the paid game—then play the entire demo on your Deck. A demo is a separate Steam app, so the full game’s Deck badge does not certify it. Many demos show Unknown because Valve’s compatibility review normally covers games, not demo apps. Unknown means untested, not automatically broken.
Use Valve’s label as a starting signal, then verify controls, text, launchers, performance, audio, saving and suspend/resume on your own SteamOS and Proton setup. Change Proton only after a real launch or gameplay problem.

What exactly is being checked?
A Next Fest demo is a separate Steam app linked to the upcoming full game. Valve describes demos as “a separate App ID that is associated with your full game’s App ID.” That separation matters: the paid game may have a Deck rating while its demo has no rating, a different rating or a different technical build.
Steam Next Fest is Valve’s event for upcoming games with playable demos. It runs in February, June and October. The October 2026 edition ran from 19 October at 10:00 a.m. PDT (17:00 UTC) through 26 October at 10:00 a.m. PDT (17:00 UTC), and Steam advertised “thousands (literally) of demos.” The event hub is Steam Next Fest; the year-round catalogue is Steam demos.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The event week has ended for October 2026, but many developers leave demos available. Valve encourages that choice without requiring it, so availability is never guaranteed after the event.
How do I find the correct demo?
Start with the exact demo app. A tile in the Next Fest hub may open a dedicated demo page or the full game’s page with a demo button.
- Search from the Next Fest hub or the game page. Match the title and developer carefully.
- Distinguish the app type. Do not install the soundtrack, prologue, playtest, tool or full game by mistake. Some demos have their own store page; others appear only as a download button on the base game page.
- Open the demo’s store entry. Confirm that the page offers the demo download or identifies itself as the demo before adding it.
- Install or select Add to Library. Add to Library saves the demo without downloading it, which is useful from the mobile Steam app. Installation uses storage just like a game.
If a similarly named entry appears, return to the event tile or the developer’s full-game page and follow the demo button there. The app you install is the one whose compatibility information matters.
Where do I see the Steam Deck compatibility label?
Check the badge on the demo app itself in both the store and your library when possible.
- On the demo’s store page, open the Steam Deck Compatibility section.
- On Deck, select the installed demo in Library and open its compatibility or game-information panel.
- Record the displayed label and any failed requirements. For Playable or Unsupported, Valve lists the criterion that failed, such as controls, display, launcher flow, Proton or hardware.
- Use the library’s compatibility filter to find the title later. A signed-in web view of your library is available at Steam Deck My Games.
The catalogue at Great on Deck is a list of games Valve has marked Verified; it is not a complete index of Next Fest demos. A full game appearing there does not prove that its separate demo is certified.
What do Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown mean?
These are Valve’s four compatibility states. They describe Valve’s review status for the specific app, not a guarantee for every future build or every configuration.

| Label | Valve’s meaning | What you should do with a demo |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve says the game works great on Steam Deck “right out of the box.” | Launch and complete a short real-play check anyway; a demo can be a separate, changing build. |
| Playable | The app functions but may require a manual step, such as choosing a controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard or using a launcher’s touchscreen. | Read the failed requirements, perform the stated step and then play the full demo. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently considers the app nonfunctional on Deck because of Proton or specific hardware incompatibility. | Read the listed failure before trying workarounds. A local fix does not turn the app into a Valve-certified title. |
| Unknown | “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” | For demos, this is common because Valve’s review process normally covers games, not demos. Test the complete demo yourself. |
Valve’s compatibility review documentation says the process is available for games and generally excludes demos, downloadable content, tools and soundtracks except in exceptional cases. That is why an Unknown demo is not evidence that it fails. It is evidence that Valve has not completed a review for that app.
Ratings apply to both LCD and OLED Deck models once a title has been tested; Valve states, “All titles that have been tested, maintain those ratings for both LCD and OLED models. Nothing changes for Steam Deck OLED!” Your actual check should still use the Deck model, SteamOS build and settings on which you intend to play.
How do I test a demo properly on Steam Deck?
A launch that reaches the title screen is not enough. Play every section included in the demo and check the same areas Valve evaluates.
1. Verify built-in controls
Navigate menus, movement, camera controls, combat or other core actions, inventory screens and tutorials using the Deck’s controls. Button prompts should match the hardware. If the demo requires text entry, confirm that the on-screen keyboard appears or that another controller-usable method exists. A title that works only with an unexplained mouse-and-keyboard interaction is not a seamless Deck experience.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Check readability and layout
Use the Deck’s native 1280×800 display where supported, or 1280×720 when the demo offers that mode. Read dialogue, subtitles, menus, tooltips and prompts at normal handheld distance. Look for clipped interface elements, tiny type, incorrect aspect ratios and videos that render outside the screen.
Valve’s review criteria require 30 frames per second at 1280×800 using the game’s default configuration for a Verified result. The smallest on-screen font character must be at least 9 pixels high at 1280×800 and readable from 12 inches (30 cm); Valve recommends 12-pixel text where possible. These are approval criteria, not a promise that an unreviewed demo meets them.

3. Follow the complete startup path
Wait through launchers, legal agreements, sign-in screens and update prompts. The launcher must be navigable with Deck controls or have a clearly documented touchscreen step. The demo should not warn that Linux or the Deck GPU is unsupported. Test a cold launch rather than assuming a successful resume proves the startup path works.
4. Observe performance and graphics behavior
Play representative sections, not only the opening scene. Check frame pacing, severe stutter, visual corruption, shader-compilation pauses, resolution changes and graphics-setting menus. Compare the result with the demo’s default configuration before lowering settings. Note the SteamOS version, Proton tool and any launch option so you can reproduce a change later.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Test audio, saving and relaunch
Confirm that music, effects, dialogue and subtitles work. If the demo offers a save, create one, exit to Steam, relaunch and load it. Test the sections the demo actually includes; a short vertical slice may omit systems that the full game will use.
6. Test suspend and resume
Press the Deck’s power button during play, wait, then resume. Check that input, audio, graphics and progress return normally. Also try exiting to the library and launching again, because some demos fail after a second start even when the first launch succeeds.
7. Check online and anti-cheat paths when relevant
If multiplayer or an online tutorial is part of the demo, test that path rather than assuming the offline portion is representative. Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye at the middleware level, but each developer must enable support for its game. An online mode that cannot connect on Deck is a compatibility problem for that mode even if the single-player introduction runs.
Should I force Proton for a Next Fest demo?
No. Do not force a different Proton version merely because the demo is Unknown. First try the default Steam Play tool and complete the basic checks. Change Proton only when a Windows demo will not launch or has a reproducible problem.

- Highlight the demo in Library.
- Press the Menu button and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select another installed Proton version, close Properties and launch the demo.
- Repeat the same full-demo checks. If the forced version is worse, return to the default setting or the previously working version.
Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on Linux through a modified Wine environment and graphics implementations. Proton is continually updated, so a version change can fix one demo while breaking another. Record the version that worked instead of treating the workaround as a certification.
How should I use ProtonDB and community reports?
Search for the exact demo title and prefer recent reports matching your Deck model, SteamOS release and Proton version. Compare several reports rather than relying on one anecdote. Community entries can reveal launch options, controller mappings or fixes that help diagnose a failure.
Do not place a ProtonDB tier such as Platinum or Gold on the same scale as Valve Verified. ProtonDB is community evidence; Valve’s badge is an official review status. A positive report can justify trying a configuration, but only your complete run of that demo answers whether it works for your setup.
For a demo whose online mode depends on anti-cheat, consult a current anti-cheat compatibility community database as an additional clue, then test the actual online path. Offline success does not establish online compatibility.

Developers may deactivate demos after the event. Valve encourages leaving them available but does not require it, and some studios communicate their own removal plans. If a demo matters to you, install and play it during the live week rather than waiting.
If the developer deactivates a demo, secondary summaries of Valve’s demo documentation report that players who already added it can still see it in their library for removal, but cannot launch it again. A successful Deck check during the event therefore cannot guarantee future access.

Progress carry-over is also a game-specific feature. Some studios announce that demo saves transfer to the eventual full game, while others do not. Look for that developer’s store news or demo announcement; Next Fest itself does not provide a universal save-transfer rule.
What common mistakes lead to a wrong answer?
- Checking the full game’s badge. The demo has its own App ID and can behave differently.
- Treating Unknown as Unsupported. Unknown means Valve has not completed a review; Unsupported means Valve currently considers the app nonfunctional.
- Stopping at the title screen. Launchers, tutorials, text entry, saving, suspend and online modes can fail later.
- Changing Proton before reproducing a problem. A forced tool adds variables and can make diagnosis harder.
- Assuming a community tier is certification. Use community reports for clues, not as a replacement for Valve’s badge.
- Ignoring storage. Next Fest offers thousands of free demos, and each installation consumes space like a game. Uninstall completed demos or use additional microSD storage when planning a large batch.
- Relying on a livestream or PC-only preview. Streams show the developer’s presentation, not your Deck’s controls, display or Proton behavior.
How often should I recheck a demo?
Repeat the check after a demo patch, Proton release, SteamOS update or launcher change. Valve’s ratings and compatibility information evolve as new titles and updates are reviewed, and software changes can move a previously failing title to a working state—or introduce a new issue.

Keep a short note of the demo version, SteamOS build, Proton tool, graphics settings and any workaround. That record makes it easier to identify whether a later failure comes from the demo, the compatibility layer or the Deck software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check a Next Fest demo without downloading it?
You can inspect the demo’s store page and save it with Add to Library without downloading. You cannot confirm controls, performance, text readability or suspend behavior until the demo runs on the Deck.
Does a Steam Deck Verified full game guarantee its demo will work?
No. The demo and full game are separate Steam apps with separate builds and App IDs. The demo’s own listing and an actual run on your Deck are the relevant checks.
Will an Unknown demo damage my Steam Deck?
Unknown is a review status, not a hardware warning. A demo can fail to launch, crash or require a workaround, but uninstalling it restores the storage it used; avoid changing system files or using untrusted launch commands.

Can I keep playing a demo after Next Fest?
Only if the developer leaves it active. Valve encourages developers to keep demos available but does not require it, so install and play important demos during the event and check the developer’s announcement for later access.
