Valve’s new Steam Machine is best treated as a small SteamOS gaming PC for the living room, not as a traditional closed console. The practical buying choice is between a 512GB model priced at $1,049 US and a 2TB model priced at $1,349 US at launch on June 22, 2026; both use the same processor, graphics hardware, memory and operating system. Choose by installed-library size, willingness to use a microSD card, display resolution, controller needs, game compatibility and your region’s reservation queue. Those are launch prices rather than a verified October 30 checkout quote, so confirm taxes, bundle contents and delivery before paying.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine 512GB | Buyers with a focused library or who accept microSD expansion | 512GB NVMe; 16GB DDR5; 8GB GDDR6; RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units | $1,049 US launch price (June 22, 2026; verify live checkout) | SteamOS; other apps and operating systems allowed | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Machine 2TB | Large libraries and frequent installs without relying on removable storage | 2TB NVMe; same CPU, RAM and GPU as 512GB model | $1,349 US launch price (June 22, 2026; verify live checkout) | SteamOS; other apps and operating systems allowed | Oct 2026 |
What should you check before buying a Steam Machine?
Check five things in order: your installed game library, the real checkout total in your region, the games and launchers you need, the display and network connections in your room, and whether you can obtain one through the reservation queue. The two capacities are the only official configuration difference, so paying more does not buy a faster processor or graphics chip.

- Storage: Decide whether 512GB plus a high-speed microSD card is practical, or whether 2TB internal NVMe capacity better fits the way you rotate large games.
- Compatibility: Look up every must-play title in Steam’s current compatibility information. SteamOS is central to the experience, but it does not guarantee that every Windows game, launcher or anti-cheat system works perfectly.
- Display: Confirm that your monitor or television has HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 and understand that a supported output signal is not the same as native-4K performance in every game.
- Room layout: Measure the shelf or cabinet, leave space for airflow, and plan the reach for power, Ethernet, display and USB accessories.
- Availability: A reservation invitation and a universal in-stock listing are different things. Your account, region and queue position determine whether you can order.
Is the 512GB Steam Machine enough?
The 512GB model is suitable when you keep a smaller active library, uninstall finished games, or are comfortable adding removable storage. Its internal drive is NVMe, while the machine also has a high-speed microSD slot. Valve says a microSD card already used in a Steam Deck should work for its installed games without extra steps.
Capacity needs depend on the size of your own library and how often you keep several large games installed. No universal “number of games” threshold is reliable because install sizes vary and updates can require temporary free space. Before choosing, total the games you expect to keep available at the same time and leave room for SteamOS updates and shader or compatibility data.

When microSD expansion makes sense
- You mainly play a stable set of games and can tolerate moving less-used titles to removable storage.
- You already own a suitable high-speed microSD card and want to avoid paying for capacity you may not use.
- You want the lowest launch price and accept that removable storage should not automatically be assumed to match internal NVMe loading performance; no comparative loading measurement is established here.
When 512GB becomes inconvenient
Frequent downloading and deleting, several large releases installed simultaneously, or a household that shares one machine can make the smaller internal drive frustrating. In those cases, compare the current cost of a suitable card with the $300 launch-price difference to the 2TB model, using your actual checkout totals rather than a historical price alone.
Is the 2TB model worth the extra money?
The 2TB version is worth considering when you value internal capacity more than the lowest entry price. It provides four times the listed NVMe capacity of the 512GB model, while Valve lists the same CPU, GPU, system memory and graphics memory for both. The extra $300 US at launch therefore buys storage headroom, not a higher performance tier.
Choose 2TB if you regularly keep a broad library installed, want fewer storage-management decisions, or prefer not to depend on a removable card. Choose 512GB if your library is selective and the price difference would be better spent on a card, display, network upgrade or controller. Check whether your local tax, shipping and accessory costs change that calculation.
How much does Steam Machine cost, and what comes with a controller?
Valve’s June 22, 2026 announcement listed separate machine-and-controller bundles. Do not assume a controller is included with a standalone machine: compare the exact product name and contents shown at checkout.
| Configuration | Launch price | What the price represents |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB machine | $1,049 | Standalone Steam Machine; June 22, 2026 launch price, not a verified live quote |
| 2TB machine | $1,349 | Standalone Steam Machine; June 22, 2026 launch price, not a verified live quote |
| 512GB machine plus Controller | $1,128 | Valve-listed bundle at launch; verify current contents and regional taxes |
| 2TB machine plus Controller | $1,428 | Valve-listed bundle at launch; verify current contents and regional taxes |
Valve’s controller connects to the Machine’s built-in wireless adapter, so the bundle does not require a separate adapter puck. It can also wake the machine from the couch. Those are convenience features; they do not change the storage or graphics capability of either model.

What hardware specifications matter?
Both official configurations use an AMD Zen 4 six-core, 12-thread CPU, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, 16GB of DDR5 system memory and 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Valve publishes these as hardware specifications, not as independent game benchmarks.

Can Steam Machine play games at 4K?
It can send a display signal through HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4, but that does not promise native 4K rendering or a particular frame rate in every game. Valve’s support guidance identifies 1080p as the default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing.
For a television setup, treat 4K output support and 4K game rendering as separate questions. A display may accept a 4K signal while a game renders at a lower resolution or uses its own scaling. Check each game’s settings and current compatibility information instead of turning the port specification into a blanket performance claim.
Will my Steam games work on SteamOS?
Many games are intended to run through SteamOS’s compatibility technology, but support is title-specific. Check the current Steam store compatibility label and the game’s launcher, multiplayer, anti-cheat and peripheral requirements before buying hardware for a particular title.
Valve said in its November 2025 developer announcement that then-existing Steam Deck Verified games would automatically receive Steam Machine verification. That was a historical policy statement, not proof that every individual game works perfectly today. Updates, launchers and game-service requirements can change, so verify your must-play list close to purchase.

Questions to check for each must-play game
- Does the current Steam listing show compatibility with SteamOS or Steam Machine?
- Does the game require a separate launcher or account service?
- Does multiplayer use anti-cheat software with SteamOS limitations?
- Are there Windows-only mods, utilities or accessibility tools you need?
- Does the game require a specific controller, keyboard, mouse or VR device?
Can I use my Steam Deck microSD card?
Yes. Valve’s Steam Machine support guidance says a Steam Deck library microSD card should work for its installed games without extra steps. That makes the smaller model easier to integrate for people who already maintain a compatible card.
Keep expectations realistic: the card provides capacity and portability, not a published guarantee of the same loading behavior as internal NVMe storage. Safely shut down before moving the card, and make sure the card contains the games you intend to use rather than assuming every Steam Deck configuration transfers identically.
What do I need for a couch or desk setup?
The unit measures approximately 152 by 162.4 by 156 millimeters and weighs about 2.6 kilograms. Its power supply is included. Measure the space, allow ventilation, and check that your existing cables and peripherals reach the ports without bending or blocking airflow.
Display and connection checklist
- Video: Use a display with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 input. A suitable cable may be needed if your existing one does not match.
- Network: The machine supports wired Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E. Wired Ethernet is useful when your router and room layout allow it; Wi-Fi performance depends on the local network and interference.
- USB accessories: Plan for the keyboard, mouse, storage devices or other peripherals you actually use, and check cable reach before placing the machine in a cabinet.
- HDR: An HDR-capable screen is conditional, not required. Buy or reuse one only if the games and viewing setup justify it.
Valve’s current Gaming Mode guidance uses one display at a time and selects HDMI as the default when connected. That is a software behavior to account for in a multi-monitor desk setup, separate from the machine’s physical output standards.

Valve’s June 2026 launch description uses reservation and waitlist queues rather than promising universal immediate stock. The published eligibility rules required a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. Invited customers had 72 hours to complete the purchase.

Queue timing is therefore individual, not a single worldwide shipping estimate. Check your account’s invitation status, the stated region and the current reservation terms. The launch announcement specifically excluded South Korea from Steam Machine shipping, even though an earlier hardware-family announcement had anticipated broader regional availability.
What are the alternatives if the queue or price does not work?
If the Machine is unavailable or the total cost does not fit, Valve points to another living-room PC as an alternative. Valve also describes SteamOS 3.8 running on AMD-GPU PCs, but that software route is different from hardware officially marked Powered by SteamOS; Valve cautions that support for other hardware can be limited.
A separate living-room PC gives you more choice over components, operating systems and retailers, but it also moves responsibility for drivers, updates, controller setup and compatibility onto you. Steam Link streaming from the Machine to another device is another way to use hardware you already own; it is a feature of the Steam ecosystem, not evidence that you need a separate streaming subscription.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should you complete the purchase?
- List your must-play games. Check each title’s current SteamOS compatibility, launcher and peripheral requirements.
- Estimate active storage. Add the games you keep installed, update headroom and any household users. Decide whether a high-speed microSD card is acceptable.
- Compare the two capacities. Use the live regional checkout total and your likely storage-accessory cost, not only the dated launch-price difference.
- Choose controller coverage. Confirm whether you need the Valve controller bundle or already have a compatible controller, keyboard and mouse.
- Inspect the room. Measure the 152-by-162.4-by-156-mm footprint, plan airflow, and verify HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 input on the screen.
- Choose wired or wireless networking. Locate the router, Ethernet run and USB devices before deciding where the unit will sit.
- Check availability rules. Confirm that your account qualifies, your country is served, and you understand the invitation deadline before treating the purchase as immediate.
- Review the order contents. Verify storage capacity, controller inclusion, power supply, shipping terms, taxes and the return or service policy shown for your region.
What should you know about recovery and modifications?
Valve provides an official SteamOS recovery process with a full-wipe reinstall and a repair path intended to preserve personal content. Use the least destructive option that solves the problem, and back up important saves or files before recovery.
Valve warns that opening or modifying the Machine can cause damage. Do not assume that replacing the internal SSD is simple, covered by warranty or necessary without checking the applicable service terms and procedure for your region.

Who should buy each model?
Choose the 512GB model when
- Your active library is modest or you regularly uninstall completed games.
- You already have, or are willing to buy, a high-speed microSD card.
- You want the lower entry price and do not need extra internal capacity.
Choose the 2TB model when
- You keep many large games installed at once.
- You prefer internal NVMe capacity over removable storage management.
- You want the simplest long-term storage setup and accept the higher launch price.
Wait or choose another PC when
- Your must-play games depend on Windows-only launchers, anti-cheat or tools that are not currently compatible.
- Your region or account cannot access the reservation queue.
- Your display, network or room cannot support the planned setup without substantial extra spending.
Valve describes Steam Machine as “an extension of PC gaming, not as a console.” That framing is the key buying test: select it for the SteamOS convenience and living-room form factor only after confirming that your own games, display and account situation fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Steam Machine a console or a PC?
Valve positions it as an extension of PC gaming. SteamOS provides the console-like Gaming Mode interface, while Valve allows other applications and even other operating systems, so software management remains more flexible than on a closed console.
Can Gaming Mode use two displays at the same time?
Valve’s current support guidance says Gaming Mode uses one display at a time. HDMI is selected as the default when connected, so a desk setup with multiple screens may require switching or a different desktop-mode workflow.
What does SteamOS recovery preserve?
The recovery environment includes both a full-wipe reinstall and a repair option intended to preserve personal content. Choose carefully because the reinstall removes data, and keep independent backups of important saves and files.
Is replacing the internal SSD officially recommended?
No general recommendation is established. Valve warns that opening or modifying the Machine can cause damage, so check the service procedure and warranty terms for your region before considering any internal-drive work.
