Steam does not impose one universal local co‑op player limit or guest-save rule. Each game sets its own couch co‑op capacity, input requirements and save behavior. When a game supports Steam Remote Play Together, the owner runs the game on one computer while invited friends receive a video stream and send their controller or permitted keyboard input back to that host. That can let people join from supported phones, PCs, handhelds or TV devices, but it is not the same as native PC-to-console cross-play. Read the game’s feature labels and publisher documentation before buying extra copies, controllers or storage.
How many players can play a Steam local co‑op game?
The answer comes from the individual game, not from Steam. A store page may show Shared/Split Screen Co‑op, Local Co‑op or Remote Play Together, but those labels do not state a universal number of players. Look for an explicit capacity statement in the description or publisher documentation.

Why the labels are not a player-count guarantee
Steam’s feature tags identify supported modes; they do not standardize whether a game accepts two, three, four or more local participants. A title can support split-screen for two players while allowing four through a different mode, or it can show Remote Play Together even when its own gameplay is limited to two people.
Example: Overcooked! 2
Team17’s Steam listing for Overcooked! 2 says couch co‑op or online play supports up to four players. The same listing separately displays Shared/Split Screen Co‑op, Online Co‑op, Steam Cloud and Remote Play Together. Those are claims about that game, not a Steam-wide limit.

Example: It Takes Two
It Takes Two lists shared or split-screen co‑op and online co‑op as distinct features, and it advertises Friend’s Pass. Its online mode can also require an EA Account. Do not infer that another game has the same account, ownership or player rules.
How can I play a local co‑op game online with a friend?
Use Remote Play Together when the game’s Steam page enables it. The host launches and runs the local-multiplayer game; Steam streams that session to invited friends, who send input back to the host computer. Only the host needs to own and install the game for this mode, although every participant still needs a compatible Steam client and a usable controller or approved input method.

- Confirm support. On the game’s Steam store page, look for the Remote Play Together feature and an explicit local player count.
- Install and launch on the host PC. Start the game from the owner’s Steam library. The host computer performs the game’s rendering and simulation.
- Open the Steam overlay. Use the friends list or overlay invitation control to invite the person who will join remotely.
- Accept the invitation. The guest joins the streamed session through a supported Steam client device. They do not need a native installation of the game for this Remote Play session.
- Assign inputs. Give each participant a controller where possible. Steam can also share keyboard and mouse input when the host authorizes it, but the game itself must recognize the resulting control layout.
- Check the in-game lobby. Add players through the game’s own local or split-screen menu. Remote Play Together cannot expand the game beyond its programmed capacity.
Valve describes Remote Play Together as sharing Steam local multiplayer over the internet and says a host can invite up to four additional participants, or potentially more with fast connections. That invitation guidance is not a promise that every game accepts five or more players; the game’s own capacity remains decisive.
What is the difference between Remote Play Together and native Online Co‑op?
Remote Play Together streams one running local session. Native Online Co‑op connects separate game instances through the game’s own online service. The distinction affects ownership, performance, accounts, player limits and saves.
| Question | Remote Play Together | Native Online Co‑op |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On the host’s computer; guests receive streamed video and return input. | Each participant generally runs a game instance, with networking implemented by the developer. |
| Who needs to own or install the game? | The host must own and install the supported title. Guests join the streamed session without a separate copy. | Requirements are set by the game. Separate ownership, installation or a free guest entitlement may be required. |
| Which player limit applies? | The game’s local or Remote Play implementation; Steam’s invitation guidance is not a universal gameplay cap. | The game’s stated online capacity and matchmaking rules. |
| What hardware is needed? | The host needs a computer capable of running the game; guests need a supported client and suitable input device. | Every participant needs hardware and a connection that meet the game’s requirements. |
| Are third-party accounts required? | Steam handles the invitation, but a game can still request another account for its own services. | Publisher accounts, console-network accounts or other sign-ins may be mandatory. |
| How is progress stored? | Usually in the host’s game session and profile; guest persistence depends on the game. | The developer decides how each participant’s profile and online progress are saved. |
It Takes Two illustrates the distinction: its listing presents online co‑op separately from shared or split-screen co‑op, while Steam also identifies Remote Play Together as its own feature. A game can support one, two or all three modes with different rules.

Does player two get a separate save in Steam local co‑op?
Not automatically. Steam Cloud synchronizes files that the developer has selected for a particular game and user. It does not create a universal guest profile, guarantee a separate save slot for every local participant or ensure that a remote guest’s account receives the host’s progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow Steam Cloud actually works
Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation says the Steam client keeps developer-selected files synchronized across computers a user accesses. The developer chooses which paths and files participate, and can apply operating-system-specific rules or exclusions. A game may omit Cloud support entirely or synchronize only settings and selected saves.
Three save situations to distinguish
- One Steam account on several computers: Cloud can move the files that the game has integrated, subject to that game’s configuration and any sync conflicts.
- Several local players on one host: The game may offer separate profiles or slots, but that is an in-game feature rather than a Steam guarantee.
- A remote guest using another account: The guest may control a character during the host’s session without receiving an independent Cloud save or achievements. The game decides what is recorded.
Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game. Valve’s support guidance also warns that unresolved synchronization problems can result in lost progress, and that cross-operating-system synchronization varies by title. Before a long co‑op campaign, read the game’s save/profile explanation and keep a local backup if the developer documents one.
Is Steam local co‑op cross-platform?
Define “cross-platform” before answering. Remote Play Together can let a guest join from a supported device or operating system that cannot run the game natively, because the host is running the game and streaming it. That is streamed access, not proof that a PC player can enter a PlayStation or Xbox version’s native online lobby.
Remote Play device compatibility
Valve’s Remote Play information covers supported Steam client destinations, including mobile devices, PCs and Amazon Fire TV through Steam Link. The guest’s device needs to decode the stream and transmit input; it does not need the game’s own PC hardware requirements.

Native cross-play is a separate publisher feature
For direct PC-to-console multiplayer, check the publisher’s cross-play statement for the specific game and editions. Steam’s Remote Play feature does not establish compatibility between Steam, PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo online services. A title can offer native cross-play, restrict it to certain platforms, or offer none while still supporting Remote Play Together.
Cross-operating-system saves are separate again
Even when a game runs on multiple operating systems, Steam Cloud synchronization depends on developer-selected paths and restrictions. A save that works on Windows may not be portable to another operating system if the developer has not integrated those files.
What do I need for couch co‑op on a PC or Steam Deck?
Start with the game’s player count and input design, then provide one recognized input method per simultaneous player unless the game explicitly supports shared controls.
Controllers and Steam Deck
Valve says Steam Deck supports controllers connected over Bluetooth or USB, and Remote Play Together is another way to involve distant players. Valve’s Steam Input guidance discusses Xbox controllers and recommends PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controllers as a starting point for developers. Compatibility still depends on the game, controller mode and button mapping.
- Check the game’s maximum local player count before buying another controller.
- Pair Bluetooth controllers before launching the game, or connect wired controllers through the Deck’s available USB connection or a compatible hub.
- Open the game’s controller settings and verify that each device is assigned to a distinct player.
- For split-screen games, confirm that the Deck can display the game comfortably at the selected resolution and frame rate; player count does not by itself guarantee a readable layout.
An additional controller can solve an input shortage, but it cannot override a two-player limit or add a missing split-screen mode.

How do I check a Steam game before buying it for co‑op?
Use this preflight sequence on the store page and in the publisher’s documentation.
- Read the explicit capacity. Prefer a sentence such as “up to four players” over a user-created tag.
- Identify the mode. Decide whether you need Shared/Split Screen Co‑op, Remote Play Together, native Online Co‑op or a combination.
- Check ownership rules. Remote Play Together normally needs one host copy; native online play may require a copy or a guest pass for each participant.
- Check account requirements. Look for publisher accounts, age restrictions and platform-network sign-ins.
- Check input support. Confirm controller compatibility, keyboard sharing and whether local players can use separate profiles.
- Read save documentation. Look for local profiles, campaign ownership, guest progression and Steam Cloud behavior.
- Verify cross-play separately. If a friend uses a console, find the publisher’s statement for that exact edition; do not treat Remote Play Together as native cross-play.
- Plan the network path. For Remote Play Together, the host’s computer and connection carry the game session and stream. A weak or congested connection can make streamed controls unsuitable even when the game itself supports the feature.
What can go wrong, and how can I fix it?
The invite appears, but the guest cannot control a character
Have the host open the Steam overlay, confirm that input sharing is enabled, and check the game’s player-join screen. Reconnect the controller to the guest device and remove duplicate keyboard or controller assignments. Some games accept only controllers for additional players.
The game shows fewer slots than expected
Use the game’s own capacity statement as the authority. Steam’s invitation guidance does not enlarge a title’s local or online lobby, and a game may reserve slots for a campaign partner or specific mode.

Review whether the game saves progress to the host’s profile, a local slot or an online account. Check Steam Cloud status and resolve any pending synchronization conflict before launching on another computer. Do not assume that participation created a portable guest save.
A console friend cannot join the Steam lobby
That is expected unless the publisher explicitly supports native cross-play for the relevant editions. Remote Play Together can still stream the session to a supported client device, but it does not bridge console matchmaking services.

Steam Cloud reports a conflict
Stop switching between computers until you identify the newer save. Compare the local and Cloud timestamps, preserve a backup of the file the game documents as its save, then choose deliberately rather than dismissing the warning. If the game’s support instructions differ, follow those instructions because Cloud integration is developer-controlled.
Which arrangement should I choose?
Choose couch co‑op when everyone is in the same room and the game supports the required number of local players and controllers. Choose Remote Play Together when one host can run the game and the others can tolerate streamed input and video. Choose native Online Co‑op when each player needs an independent game instance, separate progression or a larger online lobby—and verify its ownership, account and cross-play rules first.
How was this guidance selected?
The distinctions here follow Valve’s Remote Play, Steam Cloud, Steam Deck and Steam Input documentation, plus the feature and capacity statements on the Steam listings for Overcooked! 2 and It Takes Two. The selection criteria are explicit player-count language, the difference between local streaming and native networking, developer-controlled save behavior, controller requirements and publisher-confirmed cross-platform support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a friend join Remote Play Together from a phone or tablet?
Often, yes, when the device runs a supported Steam Link or Steam client setup and can send reliable controller input. The game still runs on the host computer, so mobile participation does not mean the title has a mobile version.
Do both players need the same controller type?
No universal matching requirement exists. A game may accept a mixture of recognized XInput, PlayStation-layout or keyboard inputs, but its control mapping can make mixed devices awkward; check the title’s controller notes and remap before starting.
Will Remote Play Together work if the host changes operating systems?
The streamed session follows the host’s installed game and operating system, provided the game and Steam client support that setup. Save portability after the session is a separate Steam Cloud question controlled by the developer’s file integration.
Recommended Free Tools
Can Steam Families share a co‑op game with a remote friend?
Steam Families is a library-sharing and household feature, not a replacement name for Remote Play Together. Whether a shared library member can launch a title and how simultaneous use works follows Steam’s family rules, while Remote Play Together follows the game’s local-streaming support.
Can a guest earn achievements during a streamed session?
Do not assume it. Achievement attribution is handled by the game and Steam account context, and Remote Play Together participation does not guarantee that every guest receives the host’s unlocks.
