To play local co-op on Steam, choose a game that explicitly supports Shared or Split Screen Co-op, run it on a PC or Steam Deck that meets that game’s requirements, and connect the inputs that title requires. Two controllers are common but not universal: some games require one for every player, while others accept a keyboard-and-controller combination. The host account launches the game; a second Steam account or second purchase is not a universal requirement, although individual games can impose third-party account rules. Steam Deck supports local play with USB or Bluetooth controllers, and a compatible USB-C dock or hub is optional for a television setup.

What do you need for local co-op on Steam?

You need four things: a game with the correct local-multiplayer feature, a capable host computer or Steam Deck, the right number and type of inputs, and any account or launcher access that the specific game discloses.

  • A supported game: confirm Shared/Split Screen Co-op on the game’s Steam store page and read the description for the local player count. The separate Online Co-op label does not prove that two people can play at one device.
  • A host device: install and run the game on a PC or Steam Deck that satisfies the game’s published minimum or recommended requirements.
  • Compatible inputs: check whether the game accepts a keyboard plus a controller, requires controllers for everyone, or lists restrictions for particular controller models or connections.
  • A display and connections: the PC monitor or Deck screen is enough for same-device play. A Deck-to-TV arrangement additionally needs a compatible USB-C dock or hub, display connection, power, and enough ports for the controllers.
  • Account access: use the account entitled to launch the game, then inspect that title’s listing for third-party accounts, launchers, or EULA requirements.

These checks must be made per game. Steam provides the platform features, but the game determines its local player count, input rules, performance requirements, and account behavior.

How do you verify that a Steam game supports same-device co-op?

Use the game’s own Steam listing and instructions rather than relying on a single badge. Look for the exact Shared/Split Screen Co-op feature, then confirm the player count and controller notes in the description.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and find its listed features.
  2. Confirm that Shared/Split Screen Co-op appears. Treat Online Co-op as a different capability for players on separate devices.
  3. Read the description or instructions for the number of local players and whether split-screen is available in the whole game or only in particular modes.
  4. Look for controller disclosures. A broad “full controller support” badge does not tell you whether two controllers are required, whether a keyboard can be used, or whether a model must be connected by USB.
  5. Check the system-requirements section for the host PC or Deck and note any third-party account notice before buying.
Steam feature or label What it means for two people What it does not establish
Shared/Split Screen Co-op The relevant indication that players can share one device, subject to the game’s instructions and player limit. It does not guarantee a particular keyboard/controller combination or every controller model.
Online Co-op Players can cooperate over a network when the game supports that mode. It does not prove that two people can play on one PC or Deck.
Remote Play Together A host can stream a supported local-multiplayer game to invited remote players. It is not the same as physically sharing a screen, and its joining-player figure is not a local player limit for every game.

How many controllers do you need, and can one player use a keyboard?

There is no universal two-controller rule. The game’s input implementation decides whether a keyboard, controller, or a mixture is accepted.

When two controllers are mandatory

Some listings state a minimum explicitly. GourMelee, for example, requires at least two controllers and says keyboard-and-mouse play is unsupported. For a game with that rule, connecting one controller and expecting the second player to use the keyboard will not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a keyboard-and-controller setup may work

Other games allow one person on keyboard and another on a gamepad, but that behavior must be stated by the title or confirmed in its controls menu. Do not infer it from the words “local co-op” alone. Before purchase, look for a keyboard-versus-controller note; after launch, open the game’s controls or input menu and assign each device to a distinct player.

Controller model and connection restrictions

Read model-specific notes, not just the general controller badge. It Takes Two lists Xbox controllers and marks DualShock and DualSense support as USB-only on its Steam page. A wireless connection that works for one title may therefore fail or be unsupported in another.

USB and Bluetooth on Steam Deck

Steam Deck accepts USB and Bluetooth controllers. Connect each device, wait for SteamOS to recognize it, and then use the game’s own player-join prompt or controls screen to assign players. A title can still impose a higher minimum or reject a particular input method, so Deck compatibility does not override the game’s rules.

What PC or Steam Deck hardware is required?

Use the selected game’s published requirements; there is no single local-co-op PC specification. Local multiplayer itself does not establish a universal CPU, graphics, memory, or storage threshold.

Host PC

Install the game on the computer that will run it and compare that machine with the title’s minimum and recommended specifications. The host performs the game’s rendering and simulation for everyone. Adding a second player does not create a separate universal hardware standard, but demanding split-screen games can have their own higher requirements, so the game’s listing remains the authority.

Handheld Steam Deck

The Deck’s built-in display can serve as the shared screen. Valve’s Steamworks Steam Deck FAQ states: “Definitely – you can play local co-op on the Steam Deck in a few different ways.” That platform capability still does not guarantee that every local co-op game runs well or supports every controller arrangement; check the game’s requirements and compatibility information.

Deck connected to a television

A compatible USB-C dock or hub can provide display output, power, and additional USB ports. Valve says a dock or hub needs USB-C Power Delivery passthrough to power the Deck through it. Valve also says most compliant hubs and docks work, but it does not officially support every dock technology, so verify the hub’s ports, display standard, and Power Delivery specification before purchase. Valve’s own dock is not a universal requirement.

Arrangement What is required Useful checks
PC with monitor Game-capable PC, monitor, and the game’s required inputs. Compare the game’s minimum and recommended specifications; confirm the local player count.
Handheld Deck Deck, installed game, and USB or Bluetooth controllers accepted by that game. Check controller assignments and whether the title requires a minimum number of pads.
Deck on a TV Deck, compatible USB-C dock or hub, display connection, power, and controller ports. Confirm USB-C Power Delivery passthrough, display compatibility, and available USB or Bluetooth connections.

Do both players need Steam accounts or a second copy?

Not as a universal rule. The account that owns or is entitled to launch the game normally acts as the host, while the second local player’s login and purchase requirements depend on that game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not present a second Steam account or second purchase as mandatory for every couch-co-op title, and do not promise that every title works without another login. Store pages can disclose game-specific third-party requirements. A Way Out, for example, lists an EA account requirement. That is an example of a title-specific condition, not a rule for all Steam games.

Check the current store listing and the game’s first-run setup for launcher, account, or EULA prompts. If the title opens a separate service, both players may encounter additional sign-in or linking steps even though only one Steam purchase launches the game.

Is Remote Play Together the same as split-screen co-op?

No. Remote Play Together is a streaming feature for remote guests; same-device co-op keeps everyone at the host’s screen and peripherals.

With Remote Play Together, one player owns and runs a supported local-multiplayer game, then invites others through the Steam Friends List. Guests send controller input, or shared keyboard-and-mouse input where the game permits it, while the host’s machine streams the result. Valve’s current Remote Play feature page says the feature can accommodate up to four joining players, potentially more with fast connections. That is a Remote Play figure, not a promise that every local co-op game supports four people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve has also announced an Invite Anyone link that can let a guest join without a Steam account. Because guest behavior and third-party account requirements can change by game and over time, treat that as a Remote Play feature distinction rather than a blanket account guarantee.

For streaming quality, Valve recommends a wired network. That recommendation applies to the network path used by Remote Play; it is not a requirement for two people sitting beside the same PC or Deck.

Question Same-device couch co-op Remote Play Together
Where are players? At the host’s physical screen. In different locations, receiving a stream from the host.
Who runs the game? The host device runs it locally. The host owns and runs it; guests send input remotely.
What matters most? Local feature support, player count, input rules, and ports. Remote Play support, invitation method, input sharing, and network quality.

How do you set up local co-op on a PC?

Prepare the game and inputs before launching the session. Use this order to avoid buying or troubleshooting hardware the title cannot use.

  1. Choose the title: verify Shared/Split Screen Co-op, local player count, controller requirements, and any account disclosure on its Steam page.
  2. Check the host: compare the PC with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements and install current game updates.
  3. Connect inputs: plug in USB controllers or pair Bluetooth controllers. If the game supports a keyboard-and-controller combination, leave the keyboard available for the intended player.
  4. Launch from the entitled account: start the game on the host PC and wait for its main menu.
  5. Assign players: open the game’s controls or multiplayer menu, then use each controller’s join button or the documented keyboard command. Confirm that the game shows separate player slots rather than two devices controlling player one.
  6. Start the local mode: select the mode identified as local, shared screen, or split screen. Do not choose an online-only lobby when both players are at the same device.
  7. Adjust display and audio: set split-screen orientation, resolution, and volume in the game’s options if those controls are available.

How do you connect a Steam Deck to a TV for couch co-op?

Docking is optional; it changes the display and port arrangement, not the game’s local-player rules.

What should you do when the second player cannot join?

Check the game’s rules first, then isolate the input, connection, and account layers.

The game sees only one player

  • Re-read the listing for a minimum controller count; some titles reject keyboard input entirely.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the second controller, then restart the game so it can enumerate devices in a clean order.
  • Open the game’s controls menu and assign the second device to a new player slot instead of player one.
  • For Bluetooth pads, check that each is paired separately; for wired pads, try another working USB port or a powered hub.

A controller works in Steam but not in the game

Steam-level recognition does not override a title’s supported-model or connection notes. Compare the controller model and USB-versus-Bluetooth requirement on the game page, then use the game’s documented input mode.

The Deck-to-TV setup loses power or display

Verify USB-C Power Delivery passthrough, the dock’s display compatibility, and the power supply connection. A hub can provide ports without supporting every display or charging arrangement.

An account or launcher prompt blocks startup

Follow the title’s disclosed third-party account instructions. Do not assume that another Steam account or another purchase will fix a game-specific launcher requirement; confirm what the listing and first-run screen actually request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which accessories are worth buying?

Buy only after checking the game’s input and display requirements. The most generally useful addition is a second compatible game controller when the title requires one for each player. A USB game controller for PC can be convenient, but no controller is guaranteed to work with every Steam game.

For a Deck connected to a television, consider a Steam Deck-compatible USB-C dock or USB hub for wired controllers, plus a display cable that matches the dock and TV. Confirm port count, display output, and Power Delivery passthrough before ordering. An Ethernet adapter or dock with Ethernet belongs to a Remote Play streaming setup, not the minimum equipment list for same-room play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Steam game marked “Full Controller Support” handle two players?

Not necessarily. That badge describes controller input availability, while the game’s Shared/Split Screen Co-op details determine whether multiple local players are supported and which devices each player may use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a USB hub run two wired controllers on Steam Deck?

A hub can provide additional USB ports, but it must also be compatible with the Deck and, for docked setups, provide USB-C Power Delivery passthrough if you want the Deck powered through it. Check the hub’s port layout and power specifications before connecting both controllers.

Why does my second controller control the first player?

The game may have assigned both devices to one player slot. Reconnect the pads, restart the game, and use its controls or multiplayer menu to assign the second device to a separate player; some titles also require a specific join button.

Can Remote Play Together guests join without a Steam account?

Valve has announced an Invite Anyone link that can allow a guest to join without a Steam account. Availability and any third-party account prompt still depend on the current Remote Play implementation and the game being hosted.

Does Steam Family Sharing automatically enable couch co-op?

No. Family Sharing and local multiplayer are separate systems. A game must still support Shared/Split Screen Co-op, and its own account, launcher, and input rules remain in force.
