Yes, you can play a Steam horror game playtest with friends—but only if the game itself supports multiplayer and its developer has enabled a way for your group to get access. Steam Playtest provides access to a test build; it does not turn a single-player game into co-op. Depending on the title, each friend may need to request access, or an admitted player may be able to invite them through Steam.

Game-specific examples show why checking the wording matters. The Steam page for HAUNTED: Escape the Dollhouse says accepted players can invite up to three friends. A Headstone playtest update, by contrast, says each friend needs their own access and should click “Request Access” on the game’s store page. Why might a friend be unable to join?
A failed join can come from access, timing, or the game’s own multiplayer setup. Check the cause in that order instead of assuming the Steam invite itself is broken.
The friend has not been admitted
Ask whether the game requires each person to request access on its store page. If so, an invite from another player may not substitute for separate access. The test is not open at that time
Some multiplayer playtests open servers only during limited windows. Valve says this is an acceptable use of Steam Playtest and recommends Steam Events and Announcements for coordination. Check the developer’s latest posts for a schedule before troubleshooting a lobby that may not be available yet.
The build or session flow is unclear
Confirm that the current test build is the one with multiplayer and look for the developer’s instructions on joining a session.
