In India, a “Steam gift card” bought from an online shop is usually a prepaid Steam Wallet Code: you receive an alphanumeric code, enter it on Steam, and the value is added to an INR wallet. A physical retail card works the same way. The genuinely different product is Steam’s native Digital Gift Card, which Steam sends directly to a friend and converts into the friend’s currency without a code.
For an Indian account showing rupee prices, buy an INR retail code, not a US-dollar code. Use Steam’s native digital gift only when both accounts meet Steam’s gifting requirements. Physical supermarket cards are being phased out and Valve expects retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026.

What is the difference between a Steam gift card and a Steam wallet code?
For retail purchases, there is usually no difference in what the buyer receives. Valve places both products on one page titled Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code and describes them as gift-certificate-style credit for games, software and other Steam purchases.
The wording changes by sales channel. “Gift card” commonly describes the product advertised by a shop, while “wallet code” describes the code you type. A physical card has a scratch-off or printed code; a digital retail listing sends the same kind of code by email or on the order page. After redemption, both create wallet funds tied to the account that redeemed them.

Do not confuse either retail product with a native Steam Digital Gift Card. That option is purchased on Steam, sent to a friend through Steam, and accepted from a notification or email. There is no code to copy, and Valve says the amount is automatically converted into the recipient’s currency.
Physical Steam Gift Card
Physical cards are the traditional plastic or cardboard packs sold through retail channels. They still redeem on the wallet-code page, but Valve has stopped restocking them. Existing cards remain usable, subject to local laws, even after shops stop carrying them.

This is the normal Indian online purchase: choose an INR denomination, pay the retailer, and receive a unique code. You can send the unused code to someone without adding them as a Steam friend, but the recipient must have a wallet in the code’s currency.
Native Steam Digital Gift Card
Steam sells fixed-value digital gifts from its own gift-card page. The sender chooses a Steam friend, pays through Steam, and the recipient accepts the gift. Steam’s India-currency view showed ₹320, ₹640, ₹1,600, ₹3,200 and ₹6,400 on 29 October 2026; another country’s store view can show a different ladder.
Which Steam gift option is right for an Indian user?
Choose according to the recipient’s account and how you want to deliver the money, rather than the label used by a shop.

Are Steam gift cards region locked in India?
Retail cards and wallet codes are effectively currency-matched. If the wallet is in rupees, use an India/INR code. Valve’s redeem page says codes are converted to the wallet’s currency, but Steam Support also lists limiting redemption to the wallet currency as an anti-scam measure. In practice, a USD retail code should be treated as incompatible with an INR wallet.

Check the wallet before buying
- Sign in to Steam and look at the balance beside your profile name. A rupee symbol indicates an INR wallet.
- Open Account Details and check the store country. Steam Support says the current country is shown there; travelling does not change the home-country store automatically.
- Buy a code explicitly marked Steam India or INR when the wallet is rupee-based.
Do not use a wallet code to change countries. Valve’s Store Country guidance states: “Note: CD Keys and Steam Wallet Codes cannot be used to change your store country setting.” A country change is available only once every three months and requires a purchase using a payment method from the new country.

Can I use a US Steam gift card in India?
Do not buy a US-dollar retail code for an Indian INR wallet. Indian retailers that publish compatibility guidance describe USD codes as requiring a US store and dollar wallet; a discounted “global” listing is not a safe workaround.
The currency-conversion statement on Steam’s Digital Gift Card FAQ applies to the native Steam-to-Steam gift, not to a mismatched retail wallet code. If you want to send value across currencies, use the native digital gift when Steam allows the transaction, or confirm the recipient’s wallet currency before sending a retail code.
Where can you buy Steam Wallet Codes in India?
Use a seller that gives you a receipt and a support route for an invalid or unactivated code. Availability and denominations change, especially on marketplaces and quick-commerce services.

JioGames’ Steam product hub is one current Indian channel. A June 2026 JioGames guide listed denominations of ₹130, ₹325, ₹650, ₹1,300, ₹2,600 and ₹5,200 and described UPI checkout through services such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. Those are merchant listings, not a Valve-published national denomination table.
RooterShop and UniPin also list Indian gift cards or wallet codes; check the denomination and region label on the product page before paying. Catalogue values reported by Indian merchants range from about ₹130 to ₹5,000, while individual shops may add smaller or larger offers.
Marketplaces
Amazon.in and Flipkart availability varies by seller. For example, an Amazon listing has appeared under the title “1000 Steam Wallet Code Only” at this product path. Marketplace listings can change seller, price or stock without notice, so verify that the listing is for an INR Steam Wallet Code and keep the invoice.
Quick-commerce apps
Zepto and Blinkit stock is location-dependent. These services can be convenient for a last-minute purchase, but the same currency and activation checks apply as with an online retailer.

How much should a code cost?
There is no single official Valve India retail-denomination list. Merchant catalogues reported in October 2026 included INR values from ₹130 to ₹5,000; another Indian retailer listed ₹150, ₹250, ₹500, ₹975, ₹1,000, ₹1,680, ₹2,500 and ₹5,000, sometimes with a promotional discount. Treat a discount as the seller’s offer, not as a change to the Steam credit value, and be cautious of implausibly cheap codes.
How do I redeem a Steam gift card or wallet code?
Redeem the code on the account that should permanently own the funds. The official web page is the clearest route on desktop and mobile.
- Sign in to the correct Steam account.
- Open store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode. In the desktop client, use Account name → Account Details → Add funds to your Steam Wallet → Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code.
- Enter the unique code in the field labelled Steam Wallet Code, then select Continue.
- Confirm that the wallet balance beside your profile name increased by the expected amount.
On a phone, open the official redeem URL in a browser. Menu names in mobile clients can vary by version; Valve’s documented web path avoids relying on an in-app label that may have moved.
Do not enter a wallet code under + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam. That screen is for a CD key or game product key, not prepaid wallet credit.

What should I do if a Steam wallet code is not valid?
Most failures come from a mistyped character, a code that has not yet been activated by the retailer, or a currency mismatch. Work through these checks before contacting Steam Support.
- Re-enter the code carefully. Valve identifies look-alikes such as 0/O/Q/D, 1/I, B/8 and G/6.
- Confirm that the code is for the wallet currency. An INR wallet generally requires an INR code.
- Wait several hours if the retailer has just issued or activated the code; some activations are delayed.
- Check the Steam receipt and verify that you redeemed on the intended account. Restart the client if the balance display has not refreshed.
- If the balance is still wrong after two hours, contact Steam Support. For a physical card, include a photo of the entire back of the card and the matching retail receipt.
- If the code was printed directly on a receipt rather than on a card, Valve says to contact the retailer; Steam cannot verify that receipt code for you.
Never publish an unused code in a support forum or send it to a stranger claiming to be support. Anyone who obtains it can redeem it first.
What can Steam wallet funds pay for?
Valve says gift cards and wallet codes can pay for games, software and any other item available for purchase on Steam. Wallet funds can also cover micro-transactions. If the balance is too low, Steam asks for another payment method for the remainder, where available.

You can redeem multiple codes on the same account and the balances add together. Once redeemed, the money belongs to that Steam account:
- Wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account.
- They cannot be exchanged for cash or credit.
- They cannot be used to purchase a native Steam Digital Gift Card; Steam says existing wallet funds are not eligible for that purchase.
- A refund request for wallet funds purchased on Steam is limited to 14 days and only applies while those funds remain completely unused.
To give a friend money, send an unredeemed retail code or use the native Digital Gift Card. To give a particular game, use Steam’s separate game-gifting flow; a wallet code is not a game key.
Why are physical Steam gift cards disappearing?
Valve introduced retail Steam Gift Cards in 2012 and added its digital programme in 2017. Its current Wallet FAQ says it has decided to end the retail programme, will not restock cards as they sell out, and expects all retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026.
Valve attributes the change to gift-card scams and lists measures including retailer and law-enforcement cooperation, warnings on cards, currency-limited redemption, limited availability and removal of cards when abnormal activity appears. Existing physical cards remain redeemable whenever you choose, subject to local laws, so an unused card bought before the phase-out is not automatically invalid.
Do not plan a physical-card purchase around 2027 shelf availability. A digital retail wallet code and the native Steam Digital Gift Card remain the practical options after physical stock disappears.

A wallet code is not the only possible way to add money. Indian merchant guidance published in 2026 reports that Steam checkout may accept UPI through the Komoju gateway, including common UPI apps and bank UPI, since July 2025. Valve’s help pages do not provide a confirmation of that gateway in the material available here, so the payment methods shown on your account’s checkout page are the authority.
Codes remain useful when a card is declined, when you want a fixed spending limit, when gifting without a Steam friendship, or when you prefer UPI through a retailer. Do not assume that a code is required simply because an earlier card payment failed; check Steam checkout first.

How do I avoid Steam code scams?
- Buy from Steam for a native digital gift, or from a retailer that provides a verifiable invoice and a remedy for an invalid code.
- Redeem a code promptly on the intended account and keep the receipt until the balance is visible.
- Do not buy an already-used marketplace code, even if the seller promises a refund outside the platform.
- Do not pay a stranger with Steam codes. Steam wallet credit is a common fraud payment because redeemed funds cannot be transferred back.
- Ignore “free Steam code generators.” They cannot create valid Valve credit and may capture your account or payment details.
- Do not use a VPN to pretend that an INR account is a US account. Region switching can trigger account checks, and a VPN does not make a USD retail code compatible with an INR wallet.

A gift card and a wallet code add money; a CD key activates a specific game, software license or other product. Wallet codes belong on the wallet redemption page, while CD keys belong under + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam.

What is the safest decision for most Indian buyers?
For your own rupee wallet, buy a clearly labelled INR Steam Wallet Code or use the payment methods Steam presents at checkout. For a Steam friend, the native Digital Gift Card avoids code entry and handles currency conversion. For someone outside your Steam friends list, send an unused INR code only after confirming that the recipient’s wallet is also in rupees.

Do Steam wallet codes expire in India?
Valve’s current wallet guidance does not publish a general expiration period for retail wallet codes. It does say existing physical cards remain usable whenever you choose, subject to local laws; activation delays and retailer terms are separate issues, so keep your receipt until redemption succeeds.
What happens if a Steam Digital Gift Card is declined?
If the recipient declines a native Steam Digital Gift Card, Steam refunds the original payment method where possible. If that is not possible, Valve says the value returns to the sender’s Steam Wallet.
Can I buy a Steam Digital Gift Card with my wallet balance?
No. Steam’s Digital Gift Card terms specifically exclude existing Steam Wallet funds as a payment source. Use an eligible payment method at checkout instead.
Why does Steam show a different gift-card amount in another country?
Native Digital Gift Card amounts follow the sender’s Steam store currency, so an India session can show rupee denominations while another country shows dollar amounts. Retail wallet-code denominations are set by each seller and still require currency compatibility with the receiving wallet.
