Steam’s built-in Backup and Restore Games workflow is the most direct way to reuse installed game files on another installation. Select a fully downloaded and updated game, let Steam create its backup files, keep those files together, then choose Restore a previous backup on the destination PC. Steam can reuse that content instead of fetching the original installation again.
This does not guarantee zero network traffic. Steam may still download updates, missing or damaged files, or other content. Game saves and settings also need separate checking, especially when you move files or use a local-network transfer.

What is the safest way to back up Steam games?
Use Steam’s documented Backup and Restore Games command rather than treating a copied game folder as a complete backup. The workflow packages the installed game data into backup files that Steam can recognize during a later restore.
There are three different ways to reuse existing Steam data:

- Stored backup: Steam creates backup files that you retain on another drive or storage device.
- Existing-installation move: You relocate an installation that still exists on a drive or computer by following Steam’s migration procedure.
- Local network game transfer: Steam copies installation content from another compatible PC on the same network.
These methods have different prerequisites. A stored backup does not require another PC to remain online; a local transfer does. A migration preserves an existing installation, while a backup is a reusable archive created from installed content.
What should I check before creating a backup?
Start only after the selected game has finished installing and updating. Steam’s backup-eligibility guidance concerns fully downloaded and updated content, so a partially downloaded title is not a reliable candidate for this workflow.
- Open Steam and confirm the game shows as installed and no download or update is still running.
- Decide where the generated backup files will live after Steam finishes. The destination must have enough available space for the backup Steam creates.
- Identify how the game stores progress. Installed files, local save files, configuration files and Steam Cloud data are separate.
- Plan to test the backup before deleting the original installation or relying on it as your only copy.
Steam’s menu wording can change between client versions. Look for the command named Backup and Restore Games or the equivalent entry in the current Steam client rather than relying on an old screenshot.
How do I back up installed Steam games?
Steam creates the reusable files from the client’s backup wizard. Keep every file it generates together; restoration starts by pointing Steam to that set.
- Let the game finish downloading and updating. If Steam still shows pending content, wait until the queue is clear.
- Open Steam’s Backup and Restore Games workflow.
- Choose Backup currently installed games.
- Select one or more installed games for the backup.
- Choose the backup destination and follow Steam’s prompts until the process finishes.
- Close the wizard only after Steam reports completion, then confirm that the generated backup files are present.
- Copy or move that complete set to the storage location you intend to retain, and keep the files together.
Valve allows the resulting backup files to be copied or moved. An external SSD, external hard drive or suitably sized USB drive can therefore serve as a transport or retention location, but Steam does not require a particular device brand or storage type. The drive is optional; the Steam command itself is the part that creates the backup.
Where should I keep Steam backup files?
Keep the backup outside the installation you plan to replace. Storing the only copy on the same drive leaves it vulnerable to the same drive failure, accidental deletion or reformatting.

- External hard drive: useful when the backup set is large and the drive will mostly remain connected to one computer.
- USB flash drive: practical only when the complete backup fits and the drive can retain all generated files together.
These are storage choices, not Steam requirements. Do not split, rename or discard pieces of the generated set unless Steam’s current instructions explicitly tell you to do so. Before treating the backup as your only reusable copy, perform a test restore or otherwise verify that Steam can read it.

How do I restore a Steam game from backup files?
Use Steam’s restore wizard on the destination installation. Simply dropping a copied folder into a library directory is not the same as the documented restore path and may leave Steam unable to register the installation correctly.
- Make the complete backup-file set accessible to the destination PC. If it is on removable storage, connect that storage before opening the wizard.
- Open Steam’s Backup and Restore Games workflow.
- Choose Restore a previous backup.
- Browse to the location containing the backup files and select the set Steam created.
- Follow Steam’s installation prompts, including the destination library and any client confirmations.
- Wait for Steam to finish registering and installing the restored content before launching the game.
After the restore, launch the game once. A successful restore means Steam accepted the backup; it does not prove that every file is current or that the game’s save data is present.
Why does Steam download something after a restore?
A restore reduces the need to fetch the original installation, but it is not a promise of zero downloads. Steam can connect to obtain content that is newer, missing, damaged or otherwise not represented in the backup.
- Post-backup updates: the game or its dependencies may have changed after the backup was created.
- Missing or failed files: an incomplete backup or a file that cannot be read may need to be reacquired.
- Additional content: language packs, downloadable content or other components may not be present in the selected backup.
- Client and installation checks: Steam may contact its servers while it registers the restored installation.
Therefore, “restore without redownloading” should be understood as “reuse the backed-up game data instead of downloading the entire original installation.” The amount of follow-up downloading depends on what changed and what Steam finds at restore time; the available guidance does not establish a universal percentage or bandwidth saving.
How do I verify a restored game’s files?
Use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files function if the restored game will not start, reports missing data or behaves as though files are incomplete.
- Open your Steam Library and select the restored game.
- Open the game’s properties and find the installed-files or local-files section used by the current client.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
- Review the result, then launch the game again.
Verification can cause Steam to reacquire files that are missing or fail the check, so it is not a guaranteed offline operation. It checks installation content; it does not restore a missing save file or prove that every game-specific setting was preserved.
Are Steam saves included in a game backup?
Do not assume that a game backup contains your progress. Installed game data, local saves, configuration files and Steam Cloud data are separate, and Steam Cloud support varies by game.

- For games that save locally, identify the game’s save location and preserve those files separately according to the game’s own documentation.
- After restoring, launch the game and confirm that your expected profiles or save slots appear before removing the original data.
A backup that reinstalls the executable and asset files can still leave you without progress if the save data was stored elsewhere and was not copied or synchronized.
Which Steam reuse method should I choose?
Choose based on where the usable data exists and whether another PC is available. The methods are alternatives, not interchangeable labels.
| Method | Where the source data lives | Needs another PC on the same LAN? | How data reaches the destination | Save and update considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Backup and Restore Games | Stored backup files created by Steam | No | You copy or move the generated files, then select Restore a previous backup | Updates or missing files may still download; saves require a separate check |
| Moving a Steam Installation and Games | An existing Steam installation and its game files | No | Follow Steam’s migration procedure and preserve the specified files and directories | Do not treat copying only a game-content folder or improvising an appmanifest procedure as the complete documented migration |
| Local Network Game Transfers | An installed game on another compatible PC | Yes | Steam transfers installation content over the local network | Local saves and configuration files are not transferred; other content or updates may still download |
How do I move an existing Steam installation and games?
Use this route when the original installation still exists and you want to relocate it rather than create a stored backup. Steam’s Moving a Steam Installation and Games instructions define which files and directories must be preserved.
- Keep the original installation intact while preparing the destination drive or computer.
- Follow Steam’s current migration procedure for moving the installation and game files.
- Preserve every file and directory Steam specifies; do not reduce the move to a single game-content folder.
- Start Steam on the destination and let it recognize the migrated installation through the documented process.
- Launch the game, verify its files if necessary, and check saves independently.
This method is different from restoring an archived backup. If the original files are already available, migration may avoid creating an intermediate backup set, but it depends on preserving the installation structure Steam’s instructions require.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do local network game transfers work?
Steam can transfer installation content from a compatible PC on the same local network. It is useful when one computer already has the game and the other needs a local copy, but it is not an offline archive.
- Keep the source PC available with the game installed and connected to the same local network as the destination PC.
- Open Steam on both systems and allow the client to use its local network game-transfer feature when it offers the transfer.
- Start the installation on the destination PC and follow Steam’s prompts to receive the available local content.
- Wait for Steam to complete the transfer, then allow any required updates or missing-file downloads.
- Check saves and configuration files separately because Steam says local network transfer sends only content that is part of the original game.
“Only file content part of the original game is transferred, no local save games or configuration files are sent.” — Valve, Steam Support, Local Network Game Transfers
The source PC is therefore a live data source, not a substitute for a retained backup. If that computer is unavailable later, the transfer cannot be repeated from it.

How can I test a Steam backup before I need it?
Test the files while the original installation still works. Valve recommends testing backup media after creation to ensure the files remain usable for a future reinstallation.
- Keep the original game installed and preserve its saves.
- Connect or mount the storage containing the generated backup files.
- On a Steam installation that can serve as a destination, open Backup and Restore Games and choose Restore a previous backup.
- Point Steam to the backup and allow the restore to complete.
- Launch the restored game and confirm that it reaches the main menu or a playable state.
- Use Verify integrity of game files if Steam reports missing content, and investigate any required download instead of assuming the backup is unusable.
Testing the archive checks the reusable installation data. It does not replace a separate check that your save files and settings are present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if restore fails or the game is missing?
Work from the source of the failure rather than immediately creating another backup.
- Steam cannot find the backup: confirm that you selected the folder containing the generated backup files and that the complete set was copied together.
- The restore finishes but the game is not playable: run Verify integrity of game files and allow Steam to reacquire files it identifies as missing or invalid.
- The game launches without progress: check the game’s local save location and Steam Cloud support; installation data alone may not include saves.
- You expected an offline restore: reconnect Steam if updates, missing files or verification require downloads. Reusing a backup does not guarantee that every restore step can happen offline.
- You used LAN transfer and cannot find settings: copy or restore those settings separately because local saves and configuration files are excluded from the transfer.
- You moved only a content folder: repeat the documented migration or restore workflow instead of assuming that an improvised folder copy registered the game correctly.
What is the practical bottom line?
For a reusable archive, create it with Backup currently installed games, keep Steam’s generated files together on separate storage, and restore them with Restore a previous backup. Expect Steam to reuse most of the installation data but allow for updates or missing-file downloads, and preserve saves independently. Use migration when an existing installation is being relocated, and use local network transfer only when another PC on the same network can supply the game files.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep a Steam backup on a drive that is not connected all the time?
Yes. The backup files only need to be accessible when you create, test or restore them. Keeping the storage disconnected between uses can reduce exposure to accidental deletion or a problem affecting the main PC.

Does a successful restore prove that my game progress is safe?
No. A restore confirms that Steam can use the backed-up installation content, not that local saves or settings were included. Open the game and check your save slots, and preserve local save data separately when the game does not use Steam Cloud.
Can I restore a backup while completely offline?
Some backed-up content may be reusable locally, but Steam can still need a connection for updates, missing files, verification or other installation checks. Treat offline operation as conditional rather than guaranteed.

Is local network transfer a replacement for making a backup?
No. LAN transfer depends on the source PC remaining available and sends game content only; Valve explicitly excludes local saves and configuration files. A stored backup is the independent copy to retain for a later reinstall.
Should I delete the original game immediately after creating backup files?
Wait until the backup has been tested and your saves have been checked or copied separately. Valve recommends testing backup media after creation, and a successful file-creation message alone does not establish that a future restore will work.
