Steam Frame’s own operating system is SteamOS 3, an Arch-based Linux distribution. You normally do not replace it with Ubuntu, Fedora, or another desktop distro. For PC streaming, the only Linux desktop distributions explicitly named in the available compatibility evidence are Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux, and that support is marked experimental rather than universally certified by Valve.
You can therefore use Steam Frame in three ways: play compatible titles directly on its SteamOS installation, stream from a Linux desktop, or stream from a PC, laptop, Steam Deck, or Steam Machine. The setup that works depends on which mode you choose, the game’s compatibility status, your graphics hardware, and the quality of the local wireless link.

Which Linux distributions support Steam Frame?
The clearest answer is split between the headset and the computer that streams to it. Steam Frame itself runs SteamOS 3, which Valve describes as Linux-based and Arch-based. On a separate Linux desktop, Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux are the only distributions explicitly named in the researched application requirements, and that listing labels Linux desktop support “experimental.”
That wording matters. It is evidence that a particular Linux workflow targets those two distributions; it is not a Valve promise that every Steam Frame game, graphics driver, desktop session, or controller path will work on them. Valve’s public SteamVR requirements page lists Windows versions and Windows-oriented hardware requirements, but does not provide a Linux host-distribution matrix.

SteamOS 3: the headset’s built-in Linux environment
Steam Frame is designed to boot into SteamOS 3 rather than a conventional desktop distribution. SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system, and the Steam Frame specification identifies the headset edition as Arch-based with KDE Plasma. The normal buyer workflow is to use that supplied image, update it through Valve’s software channel, and select games that support the headset’s standalone mode.
Because the headset uses an ARM64 Snapdragon platform, installing an ordinary x86-64 Ubuntu or Fedora desktop image would not be a drop-in alternative even apart from Valve’s software design. The supported path is the supplied SteamOS environment, not distro-hopping on the headset.

Ubuntu 24.04: named for Linux desktop streaming
Ubuntu 24.04 is one of two distributions named by the NotiVR Steam listing for its SteamVR and Steam Frame Standalone target. The listing calls Linux desktop support experimental. Treat Ubuntu 24.04 as the most clearly documented starting point for a Linux streaming host, not as a blanket Valve certification.
The same listing specifies a 64-bit processor, at least 8GB of memory, broadband networking, 500MB of free storage, and a minimum graphics class of NVIDIA GTX 970 4GB or AMD Radeon R9 290. Its recommended classes are an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor and an NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon R9 480 graphics processor. These figures describe that application workflow; they are not universal Steam Frame requirements for every standalone or streaming scenario.
Arch Linux: named, but still experimental
Arch Linux is the second explicitly named Linux desktop option in the same listing. Its inclusion is logical because SteamOS is Arch-based, but the relationship should not be overstated: running Arch Linux on a desktop does not make it identical to the curated SteamOS image on the headset.
Use the same hardware and networking expectations as the Ubuntu entry, and expect more responsibility for kernel, graphics-driver, compositor, and package changes. The evidence still labels the desktop route experimental, so a successful launch of one application does not establish compatibility with every title.

Are Fedora, Debian, Linux Mint, or openSUSE supported?
They are unverified, not proven incompatible. The reviewed Valve documentation does not publish a Linux distribution list for SteamVR or Steam Frame streaming, and the third-party listing names only Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux.
General Linux application compatibility is not enough to call another distribution supported. A different distro may be able to install Steam, expose the required graphics stack, and connect to the headset, but there is no distribution-specific evidence here that lets you promise reliable operation. If you try one, record the exact distro release, kernel, GPU driver, desktop session, and game version when reporting a problem.
Do you need SteamOS to use Steam Frame?
No. SteamOS is required as the headset’s own operating environment, but you do not need a SteamOS computer for every play mode. Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone PC-like headset that can also stream from a PC, laptop, Steam Deck, or Steam Machine.
The distinction is between where a game runs and where its video is rendered:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Standalone: the game runs on the headset’s Snapdragon processor and SteamOS installation.
- Linux streaming: a separate Linux desktop runs the game and sends the rendered frames and input over the local connection.
- Other-source streaming: a supported PC, laptop, Steam Deck, or Steam Machine acts as the external source.
Streaming avoids the headset’s local game-compatibility and performance limits, but it introduces requirements for the host operating system, GPU drivers, network path, latency, and the particular title.
What games run directly on Steam Frame?
Standalone support is game-specific. Valve says Steam Frame has a growing catalog of standalone VR and non-VR games and a dedicated Steam Frame Standalone Verified program. A game being available in the Steam store, or running on desktop SteamOS, does not automatically mean it runs locally on the headset.

Check the game’s Steam Frame standalone status before planning a headset-only setup. Valve said more than 18,000 Steam titles had been checked for SteamOS compatibility in 2025, but that statistic concerns SteamOS compatibility generally; it is not a count of titles verified for Steam Frame’s ARM64 standalone mode.
What PC hardware is required for Linux streaming?
For the explicitly documented Linux workflow, start with the application listing’s baseline rather than assuming that the headset specification alone determines host requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Component | Minimum listed baseline | Recommended class in the listing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | 64-bit Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 class | Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 class | Application-level Linux requirement, not a universal Valve requirement |
| Memory | 8GB RAM | Not stated | Application-level Linux requirement |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 970 with 4GB or AMD Radeon R9 290 class | NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon R9 480 class | Application-level Linux requirement; actual game needs vary |
| Storage | 500MB free | Not stated | Space stated for the cited workflow, not a game-library size |
| Network | Broadband networking | Not stated | Streaming quality also depends on local wireless latency and congestion |
These are a floor for the cited software listing, not a guarantee of a comfortable frame rate. A demanding PC VR title can require more graphics performance than the listing’s minimum, and the headset cannot compensate for a host that fails to render the game at its target refresh rate.
What wireless and power setup does Steam Frame need?
Valve’s hardware specification identifies an included Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz adapter intended to create a direct, low-latency link between the headset and a PC. The headset also supports Wi-Fi 7 and has dual radios for concurrent wireless functions. You do not need Wi-Fi 7 merely because the headset supports it; the important requirement for streaming is a stable, low-latency local path.
Keep the host and headset close to the access point or use the specified direct adapter where applicable. Broadband internet is listed in the Linux application requirements, but internet bandwidth and local streaming quality are different concerns: a fast internet connection cannot remove interference or congestion on the room-level wireless link.
For charging, the specification lists one USB-C 2.0 port, 15V at 3.0A, and a 45W maximum. A compatible 45W USB-C charger is a sensible accessory category, but verify its voltage and current profile, connector, regional plug, and listing compatibility before purchase. No particular charger model is established as endorsed or included by the evidence here.

How do you set up Steam Frame with a Linux desktop?
Use Ubuntu 24.04 or Arch Linux as the starting point if you want the distribution with explicit evidence. The steps below describe a cautious streaming setup and keep the experimental status visible.
- Choose the play mode. For local play, remain in the supplied SteamOS environment and select a title marked for Steam Frame Standalone compatibility. For streaming, prepare a separate Linux desktop and identify the game or application you intend to run.
- Install a 64-bit desktop distribution. Use Ubuntu 24.04 or Arch Linux if you want to stay within the distributions named by the application listing. Keep the system updated, but note the exact kernel, graphics stack, and desktop session because Linux support is experimental.
- Install Steam and the required VR software. Install the game and any VR runtime or companion software it requires. Valve’s public SteamVR requirements page is Windows-oriented, so do not interpret it as a Linux certification matrix.
- Check host hardware. Confirm at least 8GB of RAM, an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 class 64-bit processor, and GTX 970 4GB or Radeon R9 290 class graphics for the cited baseline. Prefer the listing’s i5/Ryzen 5 and GTX 1050/Radeon R9 480 classes when available.
- Prepare the local network. Connect the headset using the included Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz adapter where applicable. Reduce competing traffic, avoid unnecessary distance or obstructions, and use the headset’s Wi-Fi 7 capability only if the rest of the network supports it.
- Pair and launch a known target. Start with one game or application whose Steam Frame mode is documented. Confirm that the host detects the headset, controllers are mapped, and the game renders at a stable rate before adding more titles.
- Record failures precisely. If the connection fails, save the distribution release, kernel, GPU model and driver, display server or compositor, Steam and runtime versions, and the game name. Experimental support varies by that combination.
What should you check before choosing standalone or streaming?
| Decision point | Standalone SteamOS | Linux desktop streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the headset | On the external desktop |
| Operating-system evidence | Valve-supplied SteamOS 3 | Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux named in an experimental listing |
| Hardware burden | Limited to the headset’s ARM64 platform and verified software | Requires a capable 64-bit CPU, GPU, RAM, and a compatible Linux graphics stack |
| Network dependence | Not required for rendering a local game after installation, although services may still need connectivity | Critical: host rendering and low-latency wireless transport both matter |
| Game scope | Titles carrying Steam Frame Standalone Verified support | PC VR or non-VR titles that work through the chosen host and streaming path |
Choose standalone when the title is verified and you want the simplest physical setup. Choose streaming when the game needs desktop-class rendering or is not available in standalone form, accepting the extra variables introduced by Linux host support and wireless transport.
Which Steam Frame specifications affect Linux users?
The headset’s internal specifications explain why it is a standalone Linux device, but they do not replace the external host requirements for streaming.
| Specification | Valve-listed figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Provides the headset’s local ARM64 compute platform |
| Architecture | ARM64 | Different from the x86-64 architecture common in Linux desktops |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X | Shared headset memory for standalone workloads |
| Storage | 256GB or 1TB | Determines how many local games and applications can be installed |
| Display | 2160 × 2160 pixels per eye | High render and transport workload for VR content |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz experimental | Host rendering and wireless stability must sustain the selected mode |
| Controller battery | Approximately 40 hours | Indicates controller runtime, not headset runtime |
| Charging | USB-C, up to 45W | Sets the maximum charging requirement for a compatible power supply |
What problems are most likely with experimental Linux support?
The main risk is not that Linux is categorically unsupported; it is that support can fail at a layer the distribution label alone cannot identify. Narrow the problem before changing distros.
- Headset is not detected: verify the host’s Steam and VR runtime installation, then check the wireless link and whether the headset is paired to the intended source device.
- Video is unstable or delayed: test the local 6GHz path, reduce competing traffic, shorten the distance to the access point, and confirm that the host GPU is rendering rather than falling back to a software path.
- Game launches but controllers do not work: check the game’s input profile and runtime mapping separately from video connectivity. A successful headset connection does not prove that every controller action is supported.
- One title works and another fails: treat compatibility as application-specific. Compare the two games’ VR runtimes, graphics APIs, anti-cheat components, and standalone-versus-streamed mode.
- An update breaks the setup: record the previously working kernel, driver, runtime, and game versions. Experimental support can change with any of those components, so rollback or a clean reproduction may be necessary.
What does Valve officially document, and what remains unknown?
Valve documents Steam Frame as a SteamOS 3 headset that can run standalone software and stream from a PC, laptop, Steam Deck, or Steam Machine. Its hardware page documents the Arch-based operating environment, ARM64 platform, wireless features, display, memory, storage, refresh-rate range, and charging limit.
What Valve does not currently publish in the reviewed SteamVR requirements material is a Linux desktop host-distribution matrix. The page lists Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later, and Windows 10 alongside Windows-oriented graphics and display requirements. It does not certify Fedora, Debian, Linux Mint, openSUSE, or every Arch derivative for Steam Frame streaming.

Accordingly, the defensible status is: SteamOS is the headset’s supported built-in environment; Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux have explicit but experimental desktop evidence; other Linux distributions remain unverified rather than disproven.
How should you choose a Linux distribution for Steam Frame?
Use evidence level before personal preference. A distribution with a familiar package manager is not automatically the better VR host if no one has documented the exact runtime and driver combination you need.
- Start with the target mode. If you only want standalone games, the desktop distribution is irrelevant. If you need PC streaming, continue.
- Prefer an explicitly named distribution. Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux are the only desktop choices identified in the available application requirements.
- Match the host to the game. Confirm the game’s VR runtime, graphics API, controller support, and expected resolution before selecting a distro for it.
- Prioritize a stable graphics stack. Keep a record of driver and kernel versions, because “Linux” is not one uniform software environment.
- Plan the network before changing software. A poor 6GHz link can look like a distribution problem even when the host is configured correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Ubuntu directly on the Steam Frame headset?
The documented design does not make that a normal installation path. Steam Frame ships with SteamOS 3 on an ARM64 platform, while Ubuntu desktop installations commonly target x86-64 PCs; use the supplied SteamOS image for headset operation and reserve Ubuntu for a separate streaming host.
Do I need a Wi-Fi 7 router for Steam Frame?
No. Valve specifies an included Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz adapter for a direct low-latency PC link and lists Wi-Fi 7 as an additional capability. A compatible Wi-Fi 6E setup can therefore be the starting point, provided the local connection is stable.
Why is Linux desktop support called experimental?
It means the cited application listing does not promise the consistency or coverage of a fully certified platform. Updates to the kernel, graphics driver, compositor, runtime, or game can change behavior, so troubleshooting must track the complete software combination rather than only the distro name.
Can I stream Steam Frame from a Linux laptop instead of a desktop?
Valve identifies streaming sources broadly as a PC or laptop, but the reviewed material does not publish a separate Linux laptop certification. A laptop must still meet the cited 64-bit CPU, memory, graphics, software, and low-latency networking conditions for the particular application.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
