Steam Frame is the most convincing wireless way to play a PC-based Steam VR library, but its $1,059 starting price and roughly one-to-two-hour local battery life make it a specialized luxury rather than a universal Quest 3 replacement. Valve’s headset combines a dedicated 6GHz PC adapter, SteamOS, eye-tracked foveated streaming and included controllers. It can also run a growing selection of games locally, although the standalone catalog is still short on new, system-selling VR exclusives. For PC owners who value a cable-free Steam setup, the comfort and integration are unusually strong. Standalone-first buyers need to weigh the higher price, monochrome passthrough and immature software library carefully.
What is Steam Frame and who is it for?
Steam Frame is a wireless VR headset built around two modes: streaming demanding games from a computer and installing compatible titles directly on the headset. It runs SteamOS 3 on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 processor, so the device behaves more like a portable Steam machine than a conventional PC-tethered visor.

Streamed games do not consume the headset’s internal storage, while local users can expand either model with a microSD card. The 1TB version is aimed at buyers who expect to keep a large local library and accept a $240 premium.
How much does Steam Frame cost, and where can you buy it?
Valve lists two configurations: $1,059 USD for 256GB and $1,299 USD for 1TB. Those are Valve’s 2026 prices; regional prices are also listed for Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia and Poland.

What is included with the controllers?
Each controller has full six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, magnetic TMR thumbsticks with capacitive touch, ABXY buttons, a d-pad, triggers, bumpers, haptics and capacitive finger sensing. A replaceable AA battery is rated by Valve for about 40 hours. Valve’s optional Ergonomic Accessories Kit adds controller straps, a longer light blocker and a top strap; PC Gamer considered it useful but not essential.
How does Steam Frame’s wireless PC streaming work?
The included adapter establishes a direct 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E link between the headset and a PC. Steam Frame also has a second local Wi-Fi path. Valve’s Multi-Link Streaming can combine the adapter and local network, selecting between links in real time when conditions change.

Eye tracking enables foveated streaming: detail and bandwidth are concentrated where you are looking. Valve claims this can deliver more than a 10× improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. That is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark, and the experience still depends on the host PC, network congestion and wireless conditions.
In practice, the adapter removes much of the configuration friction associated with ordinary wireless PC VR. It does not remove the need for a capable gaming computer for demanding titles, nor can it guarantee stable latency in a congested or poorly placed network.

Can Steam Frame play Steam games without a PC?
Yes. Steam Frame signs into your Steam library and distinguishes games installed locally from those available for PC streaming. Valve’s Standalone Verified label identifies titles intended to run acceptably on the headset itself. Valve reported more than 100 Standalone Verified games at launch, and Half-Life: Alyx is included as a redeemable copy.
SteamOS uses Proton and FEX compatibility layers to make a broad range of software possible, but compatibility is not uniform. Shacknews found Half-Life: Alyx, Beat Saber, Superhot and Skyrim enjoyable untethered. Its larger criticism was that many of the best experiences are older releases and that the platform lacks a steady stream of new VR exclusives.
How long does the Steam Frame battery last?
Expect approximately one to two hours of demanding local play. Shacknews reported that range, particularly in Half-Life: Alyx, and PC Gamer observed that high-refresh local sessions can drain the battery very quickly.
Streaming from a PC is the more economical use of the battery because the computer performs the heavy rendering work, but it is not a substitute for a larger battery. A USB-C power bank or charging break is sensible for extended local sessions; Valve specifies a single rear USB-C 2.0 port with up to 45W charging.

Is Steam Frame better than Quest 3?
Neither headset wins for every buyer. Steam Frame is the more focused product for people whose priority is a Steam PC library; Quest 3 has the larger established standalone ecosystem and color passthrough.
| Category | Steam Frame | Quest 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary library | Steam streaming plus SteamOS local installs | Meta’s standalone platform plus PC options |
| Standalone software | Growing Standalone Verified list, but fewer new exclusives | Larger, more established standalone catalog |
| Wireless PC link | Dedicated 6GHz adapter, dual-radio Multi-Link Streaming | Uses its supported wireless PC methods |
| Passthrough | Monochrome out of the box | Color passthrough |
| Price position | Starts at $1,059, substantially higher | Commonly reviewed at a much lower price |
| Comfort and setup | Reviews favor its balanced design and easy boundary setup | More familiar mainstream option, but fit is user-dependent |
Shacknews reviewer David Craddock rated Steam Frame 8/10 and wrote, “I’d still rather have a Steam Frame than a Meta Quest 3, though.” That is a preference for Steam integration and hardware comfort, not evidence that Steam Frame offers better value for everyone. PC Gamer called it its best all-round VR headset used to date while warning that the price makes it a difficult first headset or upgrade.
Does Steam Frame need a cable or base stations?
No base stations are required. The four outward-facing cameras provide inside-out tracking, and the included wireless adapter handles the direct PC connection. A USB cable is still useful for charging, and a wired connection cannot fix a weak gaming PC or poor software compatibility.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Price: At $1,059 before accessories, it costs substantially more than mainstream standalone alternatives.
- Local endurance: Demanding untethered games can exhaust the battery in about one to two hours.
- Software maturity: The Verified catalog is growing, but current reviews identify a shortage of fresh VR exclusives.
- Passthrough quality: The built-in view is monochrome rather than color.
- Streaming dependence: Wireless quality and latency remain tied to the host PC and network.
Is Steam Frame worth it?
Steam Frame is worth considering if you already have a strong gaming PC, own a substantial Steam library and will use wireless PC streaming most of the time. The 256GB model is the sensible choice for that audience: it preserves the headset’s core advantage without paying for storage you may not use.

The 1TB model makes more sense only when local installs are central to your plan and the extra capacity justifies $240. Standalone-first buyers should wait for the Verified catalog and new-release pipeline to mature, or choose a less expensive headset with a broader established standalone ecosystem. Steam Frame’s comfort and setup are excellent; its price and battery are the concessions that define the product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I expand Steam Frame storage after buying it?
Yes. Both configurations include a microSD slot, so local-game capacity can be expanded without replacing the headset. Expansion does not improve battery life or streaming performance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is 144Hz available in every Steam Frame game?
No. Valve identifies 144Hz as experimental, and the achievable refresh rate depends on the game, rendering workload and streaming conditions. The listed operating range is 72–144Hz.
Does Steam Frame have color passthrough?
The headset’s built-in passthrough is monochrome. Valve’s front expansion port is intended to support add-on hardware, but color-camera accessories are separate products and should not be assumed to be included.
How long do the Steam Frame controllers last on one battery?
Valve rates each controller’s replaceable AA battery for about 40 hours. Actual runtime varies with haptics, tracking conditions and battery choice.
