For most Linux-first buyers, Steam Frame is the more substantial upgrade: SteamOS runs on the headset, it supports wireless PC VR and selected standalone software, and it uses inside-out tracking rather than external base stations. Valve Index remains a sensible choice if you already own its tracking setup and want a conventional wired PC VR system. The key distinction is that Frame can stream demanding VR games from a Linux PC, but its ARM-based headset should not be treated as a computer that can run every Steam game locally.

Valve Index Buyers who prefer wired PC VR or already own compatible base stations Requires a PC connection and at least one base station; two are recommended Not stated (Valve and PC Gamer do not provide a directly comparable current full-kit price) Windows 10, SteamOS, Linux Nov 2026

What makes Steam Frame a better Linux upgrade for most people?

It changes where Linux sits in the VR setup. Valve lists SteamOS 3, an Arch-based operating system, as the operating system on Frame itself; Index is a Linux-compatible headset and tracking system attached to a PC. That makes Frame more self-contained, while Index still depends on the host computer for its VR experience.

Frame is designed around wireless streaming from a PC, but it also supports selected local software. Those are separate use cases: streaming lets the PC do the demanding game work, while standalone play depends on what the headset’s ARM hardware and software can handle. A buyer upgrading for high-end PC VR should plan around streaming, not assume that a local Steam library will behave like it does on a desktop.

Frame’s specifications include 16 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, 256 GB or 1 TB of UFS storage, Wi-Fi 7 with 2×2 radios, a 21.6 Wh rechargeable battery, and a dedicated 6 GHz wireless adapter included with the device. Valve lists a field of view of up to 110 degrees. Its maximum refresh rate is listed as 144 Hz, but Valve labels that setting experimental. Specifications are subject to change, so those figures describe Valve’s published 2026 specifications rather than a guarantee that every mode or game will use them.

The two storage configurations matter most if you expect to install local software. The 256 GB and 1 TB figures describe headset storage, not a promise that a particular library will fit or run locally. Streaming shifts the game workload to the PC, while local installations use the headset’s own storage and depend on standalone compatibility. If you are choosing between capacities, consider which mode you expect to use and how many compatible titles you intend to keep installed; the larger model is listed at a US$240 premium.

Valve also lists approximately 40 hours of controller battery life from one replaceable AA battery per controller. That is a published estimate, not a guarantee for every use pattern, but replaceable cells mean controller upkeep is separate from recharging the headset’s 21.6 Wh battery. This distinction is useful when planning longer play sessions: the stated controller figure should not be confused with headset runtime.

Does Steam Frame work with Linux?

Yes, but separate the headset’s own SteamOS from using its wireless adapter with a Linux PC. SteamOS runs locally on Frame; for a Linux host to use the Frame wireless dongle, Valve’s troubleshooting guidance requires SteamOS 3.9 or newer, or Linux kernel 7.2 or newer.

That version requirement is practical, not cosmetic. A Linux installation below the stated threshold should not be assumed to support the dongle just because Steam itself runs on that distribution. Check the host’s kernel version and SteamOS version before buying on the strength of a particular PC-streaming workflow. The available guidance gives version thresholds, not a distribution-by-distribution compatibility list.

Frame’s standalone software path also has its own compatibility rules. Valve describes a Steam Frame Standalone Verified program that checks both VR and non-VR games for standalone use. Independent coverage explains that local compatibility can involve Proton and FEX, as well as Android support in some cases. Those layers make more software possible, but they do not make the ARM headset equivalent to a Linux gaming PC. Steam Deck verification alone is not proof that a game will run locally on Frame: Frame adds ARM translation through FEX, which can change whether a title works or performs acceptably.

That is why “works with Linux” has two different answers here. As a Linux host, a PC may be able to stream to Frame if it meets Valve’s software-version requirement. As a standalone device, Frame runs SteamOS locally but uses ARM hardware and a separate verification target. A title that streams successfully from a PC is not thereby confirmed for local installation, and a title verified for another SteamOS device is not automatically verified for Frame.

How does Valve Index work with Linux?

Valve explicitly lists Linux and SteamOS among Index’s supported operating systems, alongside Windows 10. Its Linux compatibility is for a PC-based VR installation: the headset connects to the computer, and the computer runs the VR software.

Valve’s minimum PC requirements include a dual-core processor with hyper-threading, 8 GB of RAM, graphics at the GTX 970 or RX 480 level, broadband internet, DisplayPort 1.2 or newer, and USB 2.0 or newer. Valve recommends a GTX 1070 or better and USB 3.0 for the headset’s pass-through camera. These are the published minimum and recommended tiers, not a promise that every demanding VR title will perform well at every setting.

Index’s setup also includes controllers and base stations. Valve says at least one base station is required, with two recommended, and lists compatibility with original Vive Base Stations and Base Station 2.0. The headset uses DisplayPort and USB connections to the PC, so the installation is wired and depends on having suitable ports and a workable room layout.

For someone assembling an Index system now, the published minimums are a compatibility floor rather than a complete performance target. A PC can meet the listed minimum graphics tier and still need a more capable GPU for a demanding game or higher settings. Also check the physical outputs, not just the graphics-card model: Index needs DisplayPort 1.2 or newer and a USB port, with USB 3.0 recommended for the pass-through camera.

Frame changes which computer runs the VR software, but does not make PC capability irrelevant. For streamed PC VR, the host still runs the game, so the quality of that experience depends on the gaming PC as well as the wireless link. Frame’s standalone option is a separate route for compatible software, not a substitute for meeting the requirements of PC VR titles.

What is the difference between inside-out tracking and base stations?

Steam Frame uses cameras on the headset for inside-out tracking; Index’s room-scale setup uses external base stations. In practical terms, Frame does not require mounting or placing tracking stations around the room, while Index requires at least one and works with two recommended.

That difference affects setup as much as portability. Frame removes the separate tracking hardware from the room and is the simpler fit for a space where permanent sensor placement is inconvenient. Index’s external tracking infrastructure may be an advantage to an owner who already has a working Lighthouse setup and wants to preserve it; it is extra hardware and setup for a new buyer.

For an Index owner, this is a real upgrade decision rather than a minor accessory change. Existing compatible stations are part of the value of the current system, but they are not required for Frame’s camera-based tracking. The choice is whether keeping a familiar external-tracking arrangement matters more than moving to a wireless, self-contained headset.

Do not count a base station as an optional Index upgrade if you are planning a complete system: Valve says at least one is required, and two are recommended. Conversely, a Frame buyer does not need to budget for those external tracking stations. That does not mean every other part of a room setup disappears, but it removes the specific station-placement requirement that comes with Index.

Is wireless streaming better than a wired Index connection?

It depends on whether you prioritize fewer cables or a direct PC connection. Frame’s included adapter creates a dedicated 6 GHz link between headset and PC, while its dual radios allow a separate Wi-Fi connection. Index instead uses DisplayPort and USB to connect to the host PC.

Valve positions Frame as streaming-first, and the included adapter is the intended route for PC streaming. Independent PC Gamer coverage reports that the adapter was the best way to play in its review. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of identical results in every home: wireless conditions, PC capability, software, and headset settings can affect the experience.

The included adapter is important to the comparison because Frame is not simply using an ordinary wireless connection as its only described PC-streaming route. Its dedicated 6 GHz link serves the headset-to-PC streaming connection, while the dual radios support a separate Wi-Fi connection. A buyer should still confirm the Linux host software requirement and consider their own wireless environment rather than assuming that “wireless” guarantees a consistent result everywhere.

The same review measured about 10 W of headset power use while streaming a game from a gaming PC, compared with roughly 17–19 W when running software locally in that tested scenario. Those are review measurements, not universal power figures or a battery-life estimate. Game, firmware, performance mode, refresh rate, and network conditions can change consumption. The 21.6 Wh battery capacity by itself does not establish how long a particular game session will last.

Streaming also changes the role of the Linux PC. For demanding PC VR, the host remains responsible for running the game, while Frame acts as the wireless endpoint. That makes host compatibility and the dongle’s software requirements important even though SteamOS runs on the headset. Local play can avoid streaming, but it trades the PC’s resources for the limits of Frame’s ARM platform and its compatibility layers.

How much does each setup cost?

The published Frame prices give a useful starting point, but there is no directly comparable current full-kit Index price in the cited material. Index ownership requires the headset, controllers, and base stations; a buyer comparing systems should account for whether those parts are already owned or still need to be acquired.

Prices above were checked Nov 2026 and can change. The comparison is especially sensitive to what an Index owner already has: a person with working compatible base stations and controllers faces a different upgrade cost from someone assembling an Index setup from scratch. Frame’s listed ergonomic kit is optional, and its listed price should not be mistaken for a required component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an Index owner, the relevant comparison is usually not the original purchase price of the current system; it is the cost of moving to Frame against the value of keeping a working Index setup. For a new buyer, compare the price of a complete Index system, including the required tracking hardware, with the published Frame prices. The cited figures do not establish a directly comparable current Index kit total, so avoid treating an incomplete headset price as a fair system-to-system comparison.

Frame’s optional ergonomic accessories kit adds US$59 according to the reported U.S. price. It is an add-on, not a required purchase. A USB-C power bank may be considered for longer use, but compatibility and wattage should be checked against manufacturer requirements; no specific model or guaranteed runtime is established here. Avoid adding accessories to the budget as though Valve requires them.

Price context matters too. PC Gamer reported Valve designer Jeremy Selan saying, “I wish we could have shipped it at the price that we were at last year.” Valve’s Joy Lyons also said, “Everyone’s disappointed by the RAM crisis.” Those comments provide context for Frame’s pricing, not a promise of a future price reduction.

Should you upgrade from Valve Index to Steam Frame?

Upgrade if the central problem with Index is its wired, base-station-dependent setup and you want a headset that runs SteamOS locally as well as streams from a PC. Keep or choose Index if the existing Lighthouse installation is valuable to you and a wired PC-only workflow suits your room and habits.

Steam Frame is the stronger fit when

  • You want wireless PC VR and prefer a dedicated streaming adapter over a DisplayPort-and-USB headset connection.
  • You want to avoid external base stations and use camera-based inside-out tracking.
  • You value SteamOS running on the headset, including local access to software that qualifies for standalone use.
  • You want the option of headset use without a desktop PC for compatible local titles, while accepting that local compatibility is conditional.

Valve Index remains a reasonable fit when

  • You already own compatible base stations and controllers, and keeping that setup avoids replacing working hardware.
  • You want a conventional wired PC VR system with Valve-listed Linux support.
  • You specifically prefer external base-station tracking or do not need standalone operation and wireless PC streaming.
  • Your PC meets the connection and graphics requirements and you are comfortable keeping a sensor-based room setup.

The decision is therefore about workflow and total system ownership, not simply whether a product lists Linux support. Both are in the SteamOS/Linux ecosystem, but only Frame puts SteamOS on the headset and adds a standalone path. Index’s advantage is continuity for a PC-based system that is already set up.

Before replacing an Index that still works, identify which part of the experience you want to change. If the inconvenience is cable routing or finding places for base stations, Frame addresses those elements directly. If your priority is retaining a wired PC workflow and using existing tracking equipment, Index remains a coherent option. If the goal is to play demanding PC VR, keep a capable Linux gaming PC in the plan whichever headset you choose; Frame’s standalone capability does not turn every PC title into a local headset game.

What should you check before choosing?

  • For Frame with a Linux PC: verify that the host meets Valve’s SteamOS 3.9 or Linux kernel 7.2 requirement for wireless dongle use.
  • For Frame standalone use: look for the specific Steam Frame Standalone Verified status rather than relying only on Steam Deck verification or assuming all Steam titles run locally.
  • For Index: confirm DisplayPort and USB availability, PC capability, and a suitable place for at least one base station; Valve recommends two.
  • For an upgrade budget: count only the Index components you actually need to buy, then compare that with the Frame model and any optional accessories you want.
  • For refresh-rate expectations: treat 144 Hz as an experimental upper setting in Valve’s published specification, not as the default operating mode for every game.

Also decide whether the headset will mostly stream or run local software. Streaming-first use puts more weight on the host PC, the dongle’s Linux requirement, and your wireless setup. Standalone-first use puts more weight on the specific titles that qualify for Frame’s own verification program, storage capacity, and the limits of ARM compatibility. That simple distinction can prevent a buyer from paying for one workflow while expecting the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam Frame’s 144 Hz mode work in every game?

No universal per-game support is established. Valve lists 144 Hz as experimental, so compatibility and behavior can depend on software and firmware rather than being assumed from the headline maximum.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does Steam Frame last on one charge?

The published 21.6 Wh battery capacity does not establish a fixed runtime. PC Gamer’s reported power figures came from a particular streaming-versus-local test and should not be converted into a guaranteed session length.

Will an Arch Linux PC work with the Steam Frame wireless adapter?

The stated requirement is Linux kernel 7.2 or newer for Linux-PC dongle use; the available guidance does not list Arch or any other distribution as separately certified. Check the kernel version on the actual host rather than relying on the distribution name alone.

Does Steam Frame replace Valve Index base stations?

Frame uses camera-based inside-out tracking and does not require external base stations. Index requires at least one station, with two recommended. Your existing Index stations can remain part of that system, but they are not needed for Frame.

Can Steam Frame run my whole Steam library without a PC?

No. Frame supports selected standalone software, with Valve’s Standalone Verified program checking VR and non-VR games for local play. Streaming the Steam library from a PC is a separate use case, and Steam Deck verification alone does not establish that a title will run locally on Frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Valve Index need from a Linux PC?

Valve lists Linux and SteamOS support and specifies a dual-core processor with hyper-threading, 8 GB RAM, GTX 970- or RX 480-class graphics, broadband internet, DisplayPort 1.2 or newer, and USB 2.0 or newer as minimum requirements. A GTX 1070 or better and USB 3.0 are recommended.

Is the Steam Frame ergonomic kit required?

No. The US$59 U.S. price reported for the ergonomic accessories kit is for an optional accessory kit, not a required part of the headset setup.

The Bottom Line

For most Linux-first buyers, Steam Frame is the more meaningful upgrade: it puts SteamOS on the headset, adds wireless PC VR, and removes the need for external base stations. Choose Index if you already own and value its tracking setup or want a conventional wired PC VR system. Frame’s local software support is selective, so plan to stream demanding PC VR from a capable Linux host rather than assume every Steam game runs on the headset.
