Steam Families Explained: Who Can Share Games and Play Together?

Steam Families lets up to six close family members share access to one another’s eligible Steam games while each person uses a separate account. The owner keeps the game, and every player retains their own achievements and account identity; saved-game behavior depends on the title. Sharing is not universal, and one copy of a game cannot support two family members playing that same title at the same time.

Valve made Steam Families available to all users on September 11, 2024. The rules below reflect the information available as of October 29, 2026; a particular game’s sharing eligibility can change, so check its Steam store page before relying on access.

How does Steam Families game sharing work?

Steam Families creates a shared library of eligible games owned by family members. Members launch games from their own Steam accounts, rather than borrowing another person’s account. Joining a family gives access to qualifying titles; it does not transfer ownership or turn the games into jointly owned purchases.

This feature combines and replaces Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View. Valve describes it as a single place to manage which games family members can access and when they can play. The family has a maximum of six members, and Valve says the feature is intended for a household of close family members—not as an unrestricted sharing group.

What each member keeps

The owner remains the person who bought the game. A player who launches a shared game uses their own Steam account, so achievements belong to that player rather than the owner. Game saves depend on the individual title; Valve describes shared-game play as following an account-specific progress model, but that does not establish identical save behavior for every game.

That separation matters when deciding whether sharing is a good fit. A family member can build their own account history and achievements, but should not assume a save will work identically across different copies of a game or that every title handles progress in the same way.

What Steam Families does not do

It does not grant a family permanent ownership of someone else’s game, guarantee access to every title in the owner’s library, or let everyone play one copy simultaneously. Think of it as shared access subject to eligibility and copy-count rules, not as a universal library merger.

Who can join a Steam Family?

A Steam Family can include up to six members. Valve intends the feature for close family members in the same household, and Steam may use account-activity signals to assess whether accounts appear to belong to one household.

Adults manage invitations and family restrictions. Children cannot manage the family themselves. Because eligibility is household-oriented, a family should not treat the six-member limit as permission to build a general-purpose group of friends or unrelated accounts.

Membership also has a practical cost if plans change: leaving and replacing members can trigger one-year cooldowns. Before inviting someone, make sure the household arrangement is stable and that everyone understands the account and game-access rules.

Which games and DLC can family members share?

Eligible games owned by family members appear in Steam’s family-library section. Some publisher-marked DLC can accompany the family member’s copy of a game when that copy is launched. But a title or add-on can be unavailable even when it appears in someone’s account library.

Common reasons a game or DLC may not be shareable include:

  • It requires a third-party key, account, or subscription.
  • It is free-to-play, or it is DLC purchased for a free-to-play game.
  • It is region-restricted for either family member.
  • It does not support the other member’s operating system.
  • The publisher has explicitly marked it unavailable for sharing.
  • The original owner has marked the game private.

These restrictions can apply at the title or DLC level. A family member’s eligibility to join the family does not override a publisher’s sharing setting, a regional restriction, a platform incompatibility, or a third-party requirement. The practical check is the individual game’s Steam store page, since publishers can change sharing eligibility.

Does Steam Families share DLC?

Some shareable, publisher-marked DLC can be used with the family member’s copy of the game they launch. This is not a blanket promise that every add-on in the owner’s account will be available: the DLC must be eligible, and the game itself must be shareable.

When a family owns multiple copies of the same game, those copies may have different DLC. Switching which member’s copy is used can affect whether existing saves work correctly. If a game’s save depends on DLC content, check the copy and add-ons in use before switching between owners’ versions.

Can two people play the same Steam game at once?

Not with only one family-owned copy. One copy supports one active player at a time; if two people want to play the same title simultaneously, the family needs two owned copies.

Different games are different: members can play different titles from the family’s library at the same time when the games are eligible and the family has the necessary copies. Valve’s example is one member playing Portal 2 while another plays Half-Life, with one copy of each. To have two members play Portal 2 at once, the family needs a second copy of Portal 2.

When more than one family member owns a game, Steam can ask which member’s copy to use. That choice can matter if the copies have different DLC, since selecting another copy may affect save compatibility. The number of copies—not the number of family members—is the deciding factor for simultaneous play of the same game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the family has only one copy?

One person can play that title at a time through the shared library. If simultaneous play is important, buying another copy is the clearest route supported by the rules described here. Steam Families and Remote Play Together are separate features; Remote Play Together is not another name for family-library sharing, and its availability depends on whether the particular game supports it.

How do parental controls work in Steam Families?

Steam Families has adult and child roles. Adults can manage a child’s access to games and selected Steam features, set playtime limits, review reports, and respond to requests. This makes the family feature more than a library-sharing mechanism: adults can also apply account-level limits for children.

  • Allow or restrict individual games.
  • Restrict access to the Steam Store, Community, or Friends Chat.
  • Set hourly or daily playtime limits.
  • View playtime reports.
  • Approve or deny requests for extra playtime or access to features.

A child can also ask an adult to pay for a shopping cart. If the adult approves, the purchased games are added to the child’s account; they do not become shared ownership of the adult’s library. That distinction is useful when deciding whether a purchase is intended to belong to the child or merely be accessible through family sharing.

Adults should treat these controls as family-management tools, not as a substitute for checking which games are eligible to share. Access restrictions and library eligibility are separate questions: a game may be eligible but restricted for a child, or unavailable because of a publisher or platform limitation.

What happens if someone leaves a Steam Family?

Adults may leave, but Steam generally requires a one-year wait from joining the previous family before they can create or join another one. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it.

There is an exception for an accidental departure: Steam says someone can rejoin their last family without waiting if that family has fewer than six members. Children cannot leave on their own; an adult or Steam Support must remove them.

These rules make membership changes more consequential than simply sending a new invitation. Consider the one-year account and slot cooldowns before changing family membership, especially if a household is near the six-member limit or expects to replace a departing adult.

Can a family member’s cheating affect the game owner?

Yes. Valve warns that cheating or fraud by a family member while using another member’s shared game can lead to family privileges being revoked and the game owner receiving a VAC ban. The owner should invite only trusted household members and should never share their Steam password.

Shared access does not mean shared account credentials. Each person should play through their own account, and the owner should keep control of their login. This both follows the intended account model and reduces the risk that another person’s behavior or account access compromises the owner’s library privileges.

Can a shared Steam game be played offline?

Yes, if the particular game supports Family Sharing. Valve’s support guidance says games from the family library can be played offline as long as that game supports the feature.

Offline access is therefore title-dependent rather than a guarantee attached to every shared game. If offline play is essential, check the game’s sharing support and offline behavior before relying on it for a trip or a connection-limited setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I can recover a child’s Steam account?

An adult can use Steam Families’ child-account recovery option after the child’s account has been a family member for at least 30 days. This is a recovery provision, not a way for a child to manage or leave the family independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a child ask an adult to buy a Steam game for them?

Yes. A child can request that an adult pay for a shopping cart. If approved, the purchase is added to the child’s account rather than becoming shared ownership of the adult’s library.

Can I rejoin a Steam Family after leaving by mistake?

Steam says an adult can rejoin their last family without waiting if that family currently has fewer than six members. If the family is full, that exception does not apply.
