There is no automatic Steam-wide save carryover or wipe when an Early Access game reaches version 1.0. The game’s update and its developer determine what happens: an existing save may load unchanged, be migrated automatically, load with altered items or systems, or be incompatible with the 1.0 build. Steam Cloud can synchronize files, but it cannot convert an old save format or guarantee that the newest progress is preserved.
The reliable answer is always in the named game’s latest developer announcement, migration notes, patch notes, or Early Access Q&A. Valve tells developers to disclose save-breaking updates, and real launches have produced every outcome from full carryover to incompatible saves.

What happens to a save when an Early Access game launches version 1.0?
Usually, one of four things happens: the save carries over completely, carries over after changes, requires a migration step, or cannot be opened by the 1.0 build. There is no Steam policy that forces every developer to preserve, convert, or delete Early Access progress.
Valve describes Early Access as an unfinished, playable game and specifically tells developers: “If you know your updates during Early Access will break save files, make sure you tell players up front.” The practical rule is therefore simple: treat the developer’s latest announcement as the authority for that game, not the 1.0 label itself. What are the possible save outcomes?

These examples are not a statistical sample and do not predict what another game will do. They show why “carry over” and “remain exactly unchanged” are different promises.
How do you find the game’s actual 1.0 save policy?
Look for a statement that names the transition and describes the action required. A sentence such as “your save files carry over” is stronger than a general promise that progress is being respected. Check whether the statement covers worlds, profiles, unlocks, achievements, inventory, and multiplayer data separately.

- Read the latest patch notes and migration guide. A launch post may announce compatibility while patch notes list exceptions, such as changed items or a required one-time conversion.
- Check whether the statement is final. “We plan to preserve saves” or “we are testing migration” is a plan, not a guarantee. Witchfire’s July 2026 FAQ is an example of an explicitly unconfirmed status.
- Look for instructions for the first 1.0 launch. Some games migrate automatically; others require starting the new build once, importing a profile, or choosing a conversion option. Do not invent a procedure from another game.
- Save a copy of the game’s files before updating. Follow the developer’s stated save location and keep the copy untouched until you know the 1.0 result.
Why can a save carry over but still change?
A save is more than a map or character level. It can contain item identifiers, quest states, world-generation data, progression flags, pets, food, recipes, settings, and mod-created objects. When a developer changes those systems, the game may preserve the world while translating or discarding data it no longer understands.
Abiotic Factor’s 1.0 guidance illustrates this distinction: existing worlds continued, but the developer listed changes affecting previously saved food, pets, and other content. Before launching, read the item-level exceptions. “Worlds continue” does not mean every chest, companion, resource, or quest remains identical.
Can an incompatible save still be played?
Only if the developer keeps a compatible older build or provides a conversion tool. Foundation’s 1.0 announcement said old cities could not load in 1.0, while an older 1.9 version was made available through Steam’s Betas menu. That is a game-specific accommodation, not a Steam entitlement, and the announcement warned that the old branch might eventually disappear.

If a legacy branch exists, record its exact name and the instructions for switching to it. Do not assume that selecting a previous branch will work for another title, and do not let Steam update the branch again after restoring an old save unless the developer says it is safe.
Does Steam Cloud preserve or convert Early Access saves?
No. Steam Cloud synchronizes files that the developer has configured; it does not understand a game’s save schema and cannot convert an incompatible file for 1.0. Steam Support also notes that some games do not use Cloud to store save games at all.
Cloud synchronization can still help when moving between computers, but it introduces a second copy that can conflict with a local file. Steam warns that the most recently modified copy is often the one you want, not an infallible rule. Offline play, an interrupted upload, or launching on another computer can leave an older Cloud copy available.
Read Steam’s current guidance on Cloud behavior and conflicts (Steam Support: Steam Cloud). If the game reports a conflict, compare the timestamps with when you last played before choosing either version.
How should you protect a save before the 1.0 update?
You need the game’s real save location, enough storage for a separate copy, and a clean shutdown of the game. A USB flash drive or another storage device can hold the backup, but no physical device makes an incompatible save readable by a new game version.

- Finish your session normally. Close the game from its own menu and wait for Steam Cloud to finish syncing. If Steam shows a sync error, resolve or document it before launching again.
- Identify the files from game-specific instructions. Do not assume every save is in Steam’s
userdatafolder. Steam Support lists common local Cloud locations, but developer integration varies. - Copy, do not move, the files. Put the save folder or files in a separate location and leave the originals untouched. Include multiple profiles if the game uses them.
- Verify the copy. Open the backup location and confirm that the files are present and have plausible modified dates and sizes. A shortcut or empty folder is not a backup.
- Read the launch instructions before restoring anything. A migration process may expect the original file in place. Replacing it prematurely can overwrite evidence needed for recovery.
- Remove or update unsupported mods. A mod can add data that the 1.0 build cannot parse. Abiotic Factor warned that unsupported mods could break a world save, and Foundation said its mods needed updating.
Where are Steam and game save files stored?
Steam Support identifies these default local Cloud-related locations, but they are not universal save directories:

Use the developer’s instructions when available. For example, Witchfire identifies its own saves under Usersyour_usernameAppDataLocalWitchfireSavedSaveGames on Windows. That example demonstrates why copying userdata blindly can miss the files that matter.
What should you do if Steam asks you to choose a Cloud or local file?
Stop and compare both versions before clicking. Note the last time you played, whether the computer was online, and which file has the newer timestamp. Steam says the newer timestamp is often the correct choice, while Abiotic Factor separately warned players not to overwrite a newer save with an older Cloud copy.
- Take a screenshot or written note of the conflict dialog and timestamps.
- Keep a copy of the local save before selecting an option.
- Choose the file that matches your actual last session, not merely the one labeled “Cloud.”
- Launch the game once and verify the profile, world, and recent progress.
- If the result is wrong, close the game without making further progress and consult the developer’s recovery instructions.
Repeatedly launching, saving, or switching versions can overwrite the copy you are trying to recover.
What if your progress appears to be missing after launch?
First, stop playing. Do not create a new profile over the old one or accept a Cloud conflict without checking the timestamps. Then work through these possibilities:

- The game migrated the save. Look for a new profile, converted-world label, or migration log. Some games preserve the world but reset selected items or systems.
- The wrong Cloud copy won. Check the older computer and any offline machine. Steam Support says syncing an unsynced save from that computer may make it available again.
- The game stores saves outside Steam Cloud. Search the developer’s documented path and compare it with your backup.
- A mod caused the failure. Follow the launch notes for disabling or updating mods before opening the world again.
- The build is incompatible. Ask the developer whether an import tool or legacy branch exists. Foundation’s older branch is a specific example, not a general recovery service.
Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a game’s Cloud conflict for you. Contact the game’s developer with the exact version, platform, timestamps, and untouched backup rather than repeatedly experimenting with the original files.

Yes. Save compatibility and platform transfer are separate questions. Funguys Swarm announced that its Early Access saves carried into 1.0 but remained platform-specific. Steam Support likewise says cross-platform Cloud integration depends on the game.
Ask three distinct questions: Does the PC save load in the 1.0 PC build? Does progression transfer between Steam and another platform? Are achievements, purchases, or online-server data stored independently of the local save? A “yes” to the first does not answer the other two.

Not necessarily. A developer may preserve technical compatibility while recommending a fresh profile so players experience redesigned progression or a new challenge. Witchfire’s July 2026 version 0.9 FAQ hoped saves would be preserved but separately anticipated recommending a new profile for the intended experience. Until a final 1.0 notice confirms the policy, describe that situation as unconfirmed rather than promising carryover or predicting a wipe.
What is the safest rule for an upcoming 1.0 launch?
Assume nothing until the game names its policy. Read the newest announcement, make a separate copy of the actual save files, let supported Cloud synchronization finish, resolve conflicts using timestamps, and keep mods out of the first migration launch unless the developer supports them. A preserved file is useful only if the new build can read it or the developer supplies a documented migration path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Steam automatically back up every Early Access save?
No. Cloud support is configured by each developer, and some games do not use Steam Cloud for save data. Even when Cloud is enabled, it can contain an older or conflicting copy rather than a complete historical backup.
Can I force a 1.0 game to open an old Early Access save?
Only if the developer supports that format or provides a converter. Renaming files, copying them into another folder, or changing a branch cannot make an incompatible save schema readable and may overwrite useful recovery data.

There is no universal yes-or-no rule. Keep supported synchronization enabled after a normal clean exit, but make an independent backup first and do not choose a Cloud version blindly during a conflict.
Do achievements reset when a save is migrated?
They may be handled separately from local world data, but the outcome is game-specific. Check the launch announcement for explicit statements about achievements, profiles, and online progression instead of inferring it from world-save compatibility.
