Protect your save first, then troubleshoot in layers. Copy the game’s local save folder and relevant Steam userdata before verifying files, changing branches, deleting caches, reinstalling, or choosing a Steam Cloud version. Next classify the failure: a crash before the menu usually points to files, drivers, overlays, permissions, or the game build; a crash on one save is more likely save-specific or migration-related; stutter without crashes often involves shaders, rendering, or background software. Verify the installation, isolate drivers and overlays, test another graphics API when the game supports one, and compare a new save with the affected save. If those checks do not change the result, collect logs and system details for the Early Access developer rather than repeatedly overwriting the only copy.
What should you do first when an Early Access game crashes or a save looks corrupted?
Stop launching and saving over the affected slot. Close the game, take a dated copy of the save directory and the relevant Steam userdata folder to another drive or folder, and keep that original untouched until a copy has loaded successfully. If Steam displays a Cloud conflict or says synchronization is pending, do not choose a version at random and do not start the game on another computer yet.

- Record the state. Note the game version, Early Access branch, last update date, installed drive, active mods, launch options, and whether the crash occurs before the menu, while loading one save, or during play.
- Preserve data. Copy the game’s save folder and the game’s Steam userdata subfolder. Use a separate physical drive when possible.
- Make one change at a time. Verification, driver changes, overlay isolation, renderer changes, cache clearing, and reinstalling answer different questions. Doing them all together destroys useful diagnostic information.
- Test with a new save. Start a new game and save immediately, without altering the original slot. The comparison is evidence, not proof of the exact cause.
Steam’s own Backup feature is intended mainly for installed game files. Save locations and formats are controlled by each game, so a backup of the installation does not necessarily contain your progress.
Where are Steam Cloud and local save files stored?
Steam documents local Cloud data in the userdata directory, but each title chooses its own app folder and save format. On Windows the usual Steam Cloud location is C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata; on macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata; on Linux it is ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. Copy the entire relevant userdata subfolder before editing or deleting anything.

The actual save may instead be under the game’s installation directory, your operating-system user profile, a Documents folder, or another title-specific path. Check the game’s official support page or community instructions for the exact location. Preserve file names, timestamps, and folder structure in your copy. Do not rename a save to make it appear valid: many games use companion metadata, indexes, or checksums.
Keep the backup read-only in practice. Do not overwrite it with a newer Cloud download, and do not delete the original because a replacement appears to work. After a recovered copy loads and can be saved again, make a second backup of that known-good state.
How can you tell whether the problem is the installation, the renderer, or one save?
The failure pattern narrows the next safe test. It does not prove a cause, especially in Early Access builds where a patch can introduce several interacting bugs.

Driver-based and engine-based shader caches are separate layers. A shader-related stutter can therefore persist even when save files are healthy, and deleting a save or reinstalling the game is not a logical first response to that symptom.
How do you back up a save before repairing Steam?
Use a simple two-copy procedure so every later experiment can be reversed.
- Exit the game and wait for Steam to finish any visible disk or Cloud activity. If synchronization is unresolved, leave Steam open but do not launch the title.
- Copy the game’s known save directory to a folder named with the game, machine, and date. If you do not know the location, preserve the relevant Steam
userdatafolder first and then locate title-specific files through the game’s support documentation. - Copy the game’s relevant userdata app folder separately. Keep the original folder in place and use the copy for any restoration attempt.
- Write down which machine and installation produced each copy, plus file modification times. This matters when two computers have different “newest” files.
- After a recovery attempt, launch only the copied data in the manner recommended by the developer. Confirm that it loads, reaches a playable state, and can create a fresh save before replacing anything.
If a title uses mods, preserve the mod list and versions as well. A save can appear corrupted when the content or scripts it expects are absent after an update.
How do you verify Steam game files safely?
File verification targets the installation, not a universal save-repair mechanism. Steam says verification can help when content is missing or a game crashes because it checks whether the game’s installed files are correct.

- Open Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch once and record whether the symptom changed; do not immediately perform several other repairs.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification even when the installation is usable. Local configuration files can be intentionally different and should not be replaced. Verification can restore or reacquire game content, but it normally cannot reconstruct a deleted, malformed, or title-specific save.
If verification changes nothing, Steam’s installation guidance also lists clearing the download cache, repairing the Steam library folder, checking drive errors and write permissions, and testing another hard drive. Treat each as a separate diagnostic step. Clearing a cache or repairing a library can affect downloads and configuration, so do it only after the save backup is secure.
How do you isolate graphics drivers, overlays, and security software?
Update Windows and the graphics driver first. Then run a controlled test with non-essential software closed: chat and game overlays, hardware-monitoring or tuning utilities, frame-rate injectors, and similar background tools. Security software can also interfere with file access or injection; temporarily disabling it is a diagnostic test only, and normal protection should be restored immediately afterward.

A repeatable fault in the same module is useful to the developer, but it is not by itself proof that Windows or the driver is defective.
Do not permanently disable security controls or add broad exclusions as a first fix. If closing an overlay changes the result, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict. Keep notes on the exact version of the driver and utility used for each test.
Should you switch between DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan?
Only switch to a graphics API that the game explicitly exposes. If its launcher or settings offer DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan, test one alternate renderer at a time, restart the game, and record whether the crash or stutter changes. This is a reversible compatibility test, not a universal launch-option recipe.
An official Early Access update for an Unreal Engine title illustrates why this can matter: a patch may address crashes and save-loading problems while forcing a different graphics API is offered as a supported workaround. That behavior is title-specific. Do not invent launch parameters for a game that does not document them, and do not change renderer, branch, mods, and driver simultaneously.

How do you test whether one save is damaged?
After making the backup, start a new game and save immediately in a separate slot. Exit, relaunch, and load that new save. If it works while the older save repeatedly crashes, report the issue as save-specific or migration-related and retain the old file for the developer. If every save fails, focus on installation, renderer, drivers, permissions, storage, or the current build instead.
This comparison is diagnostic, not conclusive. A new save may avoid an area, quest, mod, or asset that triggers the failure, and a later load can still expose the same defect. Never overwrite the only copy of the old slot while testing.
After an Early Access update, saves may require migration. Keep a copy from before the update and note the exact build that last loaded it. If the developer provides a documented rollback or compatibility branch, follow that title-specific procedure only after backing up.
How should you handle a Steam Cloud conflict?
Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a guaranteed historical backup. Developers decide which files are synchronized. A conflict can occur when files changed on two computers or when a local file and a Cloud copy have different timestamps. Steam warns that Cloud may not recover lost saves or resolve the conflict for you.
- Do not click a conflict choice until both local and Cloud states are preserved.
- Record which computer, drive, and game build produced each state.
- Copy the local userdata folder and the game’s separate save directory.
- Compare timestamps, file sizes, and in-game progress where possible. A newer timestamp alone does not prove that a file contains the better progress.
- Choose the version only after you know which copy you can restore. If uncertain, keep Cloud disabled temporarily for this title while working from a duplicate, then re-enable it after a known-good save is established.
Steam Support cannot recover lost saves or resolve a Cloud conflict on your behalf. A conflict choice can propagate across devices, so avoid launching the game elsewhere until the state is understood.
What can you do about stuttering when the game does not crash?
First determine whether the hitching is limited to shader compilation, a particular area, or a recent driver or game update. Let a newly loaded area finish its initial shader work, then compare the same route after restarting. Close overlays and monitoring utilities, and test a supported renderer separately.
Do not treat a stutter as evidence of save corruption. Save files and shader caches are different data. If stutter began immediately after a driver or Early Access update, record that change and check the developer’s patch notes or support channel. If it occurs only in one area or after a specific action, include that reproduction in the report.

Keep graphics settings changes reversible. Change one setting or renderer, reproduce the same scene, and note the result. A drive move may help distinguish storage or installation problems, but it is not a guaranteed performance fix.

Use these steps only after preserving saves and when verification has not resolved an installation or write problem. Steam guidance includes clearing the download cache, repairing the Steam library folder, checking drive errors and write permissions, and trying an alternate hard drive.
- Clear download cache: useful when Steam’s download state is stuck or content cannot be reacquired; expect to sign in again and recheck downloads.
- Repair the library folder: relevant when Steam cannot write, update, or validate files in that library.
- Check the drive: appropriate when there are read/write errors, unusual installation failures, or permission warnings.
- Test another drive: useful for separating a storage or library problem from a game-build problem.
Move or reinstall only after noting the current branch, mods, launch options, renderer, and save location. Uninstalling can remove local files, so verify the backup before confirming any deletion. An external SSD can store a manual save copy or a test Steam library; it is not a guaranteed cure for crashes, stuttering, or corrupted saves.

What should you send an Early Access developer?
Escalate when verification, controlled environment tests, and a new-save comparison do not resolve the failure. Early Access software may require a patch for a regression, save migration bug, renderer incompatibility, or broken content.
- Game name, build number, Early Access branch, and date of the last update.
- Operating-system version, CPU, GPU, RAM, graphics-driver version, and storage location.
- Exact reproduction steps, including whether a new save loads.
- Crash text, crash-reporter output, Event Viewer faulting module, and relevant logs.
- Whether verification, renderer changes, overlay isolation, cache or library repair, and alternate-drive testing changed the result.
- A copy of the affected save only through the developer’s requested support channel. Keep your original backup.
Describe what happened after each individual change. “It crashes” is less actionable than “Build X loads a new save, but the pre-update save crashes at 70% after switching from Vulkan to DirectX 12.” Do not post private account data or an unredacted userdata folder publicly.

A single save crashes, but a new game works
Keep the old save untouched, disable mods only if the developer documents a safe procedure, and report the exact slot and build history. Do not repeatedly save over it or assume reinstalling will rebuild its contents.

The game crashes before the menu
Back up first, verify files, update the graphics driver and Windows, close overlays and monitoring tools, then test a supported alternate renderer. If all saves and the menu fail, a game-build regression or developer patch may be required.
Progress reverted after playing on another computer
Stop launching on both devices. Preserve each local userdata copy, identify which build created each file, and resolve Cloud only after you can restore either state.

Do not panic or assume the save is lost. Steam notes that local configuration files may normally fail verification; relaunch once, then continue with the next controlled test only if the original symptom remains.
How do you prevent the next Early Access save loss?
Keep dated manual copies before major updates, branch changes, mod changes, or moving the library. Record the current build and branch with the copy. Treat Steam Cloud as a convenience for synchronization, not as the only archive. When a title receives a large update, make a fresh backup before the first launch and keep the pre-update copy until the new build has loaded and saved successfully.

Can Steam’s Backup and Restore feature recover my save?

Is a corrupted save always caused by a bad hard drive?

Where can I find crash logs for a Steam game on Windows?
