There is no honest single storage number for PC Game Pass games on a Steam Deck. Microsoft lists 150MB for the Xbox PC app, not for the games, and says each title has its own requirement. Check the individual game page before installing.

For local play, the bigger issue comes first: PC Game Pass is supported on a Windows PC running Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later, while a Steam Deck ships with SteamOS 3. If you install Windows on the Deck, a 512GB UHS-I microSD card is the best general-purpose capacity; choose 1TB if you want a larger library without moving games. A card adds space, but it does not turn PC Game Pass into a native SteamOS installation.

256GB-class setup Occasional local installs Works only with a small, actively managed library Windows installed on Steam Deck Oct 2026

How much storage does a PC Game Pass game need?

It depends on the specific title. Microsoft does not publish a standard or average installation size for PC Game Pass games; its official PC Game Pass requirements list 150MB for the Xbox PC app and state that system requirements vary by game. That 150MB figure is not the space required by a game.

Before buying a card or beginning an installation, open the game’s detail page in the Xbox PC app or on Microsoft’s listing and read that title’s storage requirement. Treat the number as title-specific: two games in the same subscription can have dramatically different footprints, and updates can change the amount of free space needed over time.

A useful planning method is to make a list of the games you expect to keep installed, record each game’s listed requirement, and compare the total with the usable free space shown by Windows. Do not plan from a made-up average. If a title page gives a minimum and a recommended configuration, use the storage figure associated with installation and leave room for the operating system, the Xbox app and updates rather than filling the card to its last available gigabyte.

Can you install PC Game Pass games on a Steam Deck?

Yes, but a local installation is a Windows-on-Deck setup, not the same as installing a normal Steam game in SteamOS. Microsoft says PC Game Pass can be played on a Windows PC and requires Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher. Valve lists SteamOS 3, an Arch-based Linux system, as the Deck’s default operating system.

Those two official requirements establish the platform distinction. A microSD card supplies storage; it does not provide Windows, the Xbox PC app or a compatibility layer. To install games locally, you must first have a Windows environment that meets Microsoft’s version requirement, then install and use the Xbox PC app there. Whether a particular title works acceptably can still depend on that Windows setup and the game’s own requirements.

Community methods for running Windows or accessing other services may change, but they should not be described as official SteamOS support for PC Game Pass. If you want to stay entirely within SteamOS, consider streaming instead of treating a card purchase as a way to bypass the Windows requirement.

Do you need Windows to play PC Game Pass on Steam Deck?

For local PC Game Pass installations, plan on Windows. Microsoft’s published PC requirement is Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later; Valve’s published default for the Deck is SteamOS 3. Installing a larger card does not alter either requirement.

What the Windows requirement means

  • The supported PC environment named by Microsoft is a Windows PC.
  • The Windows edition must meet the stated 22H2-or-newer version requirement.
  • The Xbox PC app and the game files must be installed in that Windows environment.
  • Each title still has its own storage and hardware requirements, so Windows alone is not a guarantee that every game will be suitable.

How streaming changes the decision

Streaming is a separate scenario. When the game runs remotely, the Deck does not need the complete local game installation, so card capacity is not the main constraint. You still need a compatible way to access the service and a reliable connection, but do not confuse a streaming setup with a local PC Game Pass installation.

Which Steam Deck microSD capacity should you buy?

Choose capacity according to how many games you want stored locally, not according to Microsoft’s 150MB app figure. For most people planning Windows and local installs, 512GB is the sensible starting point; 1TB is the easier choice for a large library or anyone who dislikes moving games.

512GB: the balanced default

A 512GB UHS-I microSD card adds substantial room without committing you to the largest commonly available capacity. It is the strongest general recommendation for a Deck owner who expects to install PC Game Pass games locally but will rotate titles as needed.

Call this a planning recommendation, not an official Microsoft or Valve requirement. The number of games that fit depends on their individual listings, and the usable space reported by Windows will be lower than the capacity printed on the package because the operating system and formatting consume space.

1TB: the large-library option

Choose 1TB when you want several large games available at once, share the card with other local games, or strongly prefer not to uninstall and redownload titles. It offers more breathing room, but it does not make a title compatible, remove the need for Windows or increase the Deck’s supported card interface speed.

256GB-class storage: workable but restrictive

A 256GB-class setup can work for occasional local installs when you keep only a small number of games and actively manage free space. It is editorial planning guidance rather than a Microsoft requirement. Large installations, patches and a second library can make this capacity feel tight quickly.

Streaming-first: buy for other files, not Game Pass installs

If you intend to stream rather than install PC Game Pass games, local game-file storage is not the deciding factor. Select a card only for the other content you keep on the Deck, such as locally installed Steam games or media, and do not pay for capacity you will not use for local Game Pass files.

What kind of microSD card does Steam Deck support?

Valve says every Steam Deck model supports storage expansion through microSD. Its support documentation specifies that UHS-I Class 3 or better cards are supported. The Deck can use UHS-II and UHS-III cards, but it does not support their higher transfer speeds.

Use UHS-I as the compatibility baseline

When comparing cards, look for a UHS-I model rated Class 3 or better. A more expensive UHS-II or UHS-III label does not unlock the faster interface on the Deck, so paying solely for that interface is difficult to justify for this use.

Format the card before relying on it

Valve says a microSD card must be formatted for use with Steam Deck. Back up anything on the card first, then use the Deck’s storage-formatting process or the formatting procedure required by your Windows installation. Formatting erases existing data; do not begin until files you need are copied elsewhere.

What happens after expansion

Valve states that games stored on a microSD card appear in the Steam Deck library instantly. That convenience applies to the Deck’s supported storage workflow; it should not be read as a promise that a card prepared for SteamOS is automatically a ready-to-use Windows Game Pass volume. A Windows setup may have its own filesystem and boot requirements.

How should you plan storage for local PC Game Pass installs?

Use this sequence to avoid buying capacity before resolving the platform question.

  1. Choose local play or streaming. If you are streaming, do not size the card around complete Game Pass installations. If you are installing locally, continue with a Windows plan.
  2. Confirm the Windows baseline. Microsoft specifies Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later, for PC Game Pass on PC. Make sure your intended Deck setup can meet that requirement before shopping for storage.
  3. List the titles you will keep. Open each game’s detail page and record its stated installation requirement. There is no reliable catalog-wide average to substitute for those figures.
  4. Pick a capacity tier. Use 256GB-class only for a small, actively managed library; choose 512GB for the balanced default; choose 1TB when avoiding frequent moves matters more than the additional cost.
  5. Verify the interface. Select a UHS-I Class 3 or better card. Do not assume a UHS-II or UHS-III card will run at its advertised higher transfer speed in the Deck.
  6. Format before installing. Back up existing files, format the card as required by the Deck or Windows environment, and confirm that the operating system reports the expected free space.
  7. Recheck free space as your library changes. Uninstall or move titles when the card is nearly full, and revisit each game’s current detail page when a large update or reinstall is planned.

What are the most common storage mistakes?

  • Using 150MB as a game-size estimate: that is Microsoft’s listed requirement for the Xbox PC app, not a typical game installation.
  • Assuming SteamOS is the PC Game Pass platform: SteamOS 3 is the Deck’s default operating system, while Microsoft’s PC requirement names Windows.
  • Buying the fastest interface on the label: Valve says the Deck does not support the higher transfer speeds of UHS-II and UHS-III.
  • Choosing a card from one unusually small title: game requirements vary, so size the library from the actual titles you plan to keep.
  • Skipping a backup before formatting: the required formatting process can erase the card.
  • Counting streaming as a local install: streamed games do not require the complete game files on the Deck, so their storage calculation is different.

Is a microSD card worth buying for PC Game Pass on Steam Deck?

It is worth buying if you have decided to run Windows locally and need more room than the Deck’s internal drive provides. A 512GB UHS-I microSD card is the practical default for most local-install users; 1TB is justified when your planned library is larger or you want fewer storage-management chores.

It is not a substitute for Windows, and it is not proof that a title will run. Make the platform decision first, check the individual game pages second, then choose capacity and a supported UHS-I card. If you will stream instead, buy only as much local storage as your other Deck content requires.

How we picked the capacity recommendation

The recommendations follow four constraints stated in the official platform documentation: Microsoft’s per-game variability and Windows 10/11 version 22H2-or-later requirement; Valve’s SteamOS 3 default; Valve’s support for microSD expansion on all Deck models; and Valve’s UHS-I Class 3-or-better support with no higher-speed support for UHS-II or UHS-III. The 256GB, 512GB and 1TB tiers are practical planning guidance based on library size, not mandated capacities.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Windows installation make every PC Game Pass title compatible with the Deck?

No. Windows addresses Microsoft’s platform requirement, but each game still publishes its own storage and system requirements. A title page should be treated as the authority for that game’s installation needs rather than as evidence that every catalog entry will behave the same way.

Will a 1TB card make games run at higher frame rates?

Capacity and frame rate are separate considerations. A 1TB card mainly gives you room for more files; it does not change the Deck’s graphics hardware, and Valve says the Deck cannot use the higher transfer speeds advertised by UHS-II or UHS-III cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I estimate space for a Game Pass queue that changes every month?

Keep a short list of the titles you expect to install together and total the requirements shown on their current detail pages. Recheck the list before a large download or update, because a rotating subscription library makes a fixed average especially unreliable.

Can I use a card that already contains SteamOS games for Windows Game Pass?

Do not assume the existing layout is ready for Windows. Valve’s documentation covers formatting for Steam Deck use, while Microsoft specifies a Windows PC environment; back up the card and verify the filesystem and boot arrangement required by your particular Windows setup before changing it.
