Steam Deck badges are Valve’s compatibility findings, not universal promises about frame rates, battery life or your preferred controls. Verified means a game passed Valve’s out-of-the-box checks; Playable means it runs but may need a manual step; Unsupported means Valve found a current functional barrier; and Unknown means the review has not been completed. The most important distinction is that Unknown is not a failed test, while Playable does not mean broken.

Use the badge as a starting point, then open the detailed compatibility note. That note tells you whether the friction is a one-time keyboard prompt, a touch-only launcher, a control-layout adjustment, readability issue or a deeper Proton or middleware problem.

What do the four Steam Deck compatibility badges mean?

Each badge answers a different question about whether a game can deliver its content on a Deck with Valve’s expected default setup. Valve’s consumer descriptions are published on its Steam Deck Verified page.

Badge Valve’s finding What you might need to do What it does not promise
Verified Works well out of the box under Valve’s reviewed conditions. Usually nothing beyond launching the game. A locked 60 frames per second, maximum graphics settings, long battery life or agreement with your personal preferences.
Playable Functional, but one or more details require intervention or compromise. Use a community layout, open the on-screen keyboard manually, tap through a launcher or adjust a setting. That every Playable title has the same issue, or that it is unreliable.
Unsupported Valve found a current functional incompatibility on Deck. Often no simple accessory or setting will resolve it; the game or its middleware may need a change. A permanent failure, a purchase ban or proof that a future build cannot work.
Unknown Valve has not completed a compatibility review. Check independent information and be prepared for uncertainty. That the game fails, works, or has any particular technical problem.

Valve describes Verified as “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” Its Unknown description is “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” Those are category descriptions, not performance guarantees or statements from a named employee.

What does Valve check for a Verified rating?

Verified is a checklist result. Valve checks whether the default controls can reach the game’s content, whether prompts match the active inputs, whether text entry works when needed, whether the display and interface are suitable for Deck, whether launchers can be navigated, and whether the game and relevant middleware function under Proton when Proton is used. The current developer checklist is documented at Steamworks’ Steam Deck compatibility page.

Controls and input prompts

The default control configuration must let a player start and play the game without depending on an external keyboard or mouse. On-screen prompts should correspond to the buttons or inputs that are actually active. A title can therefore lose the out-of-the-box experience if it expects desktop keyboard shortcuts, hides essential functions behind an inaccessible menu or displays prompts that do not match the Deck controls.

Text entry, launchers and menus

Games that require a name, login, code or other text entry need an appropriate way to type. A launcher must be navigable with the Deck’s controls or touch input rather than forcing a desktop-only interaction. A title that launches successfully but makes you summon the virtual keyboard or tap a small launcher button can be marked Playable instead of Verified.

Display and readability

Valve’s checklist includes resolution, interface behavior and text legibility on the Deck screen. The current developer guidance specifies a 9-pixel minimum character height at 1280×800 and recommends 12 pixels where possible. These are checklist thresholds, not a promise that every player will find a game comfortable at every viewing distance or scaling setting.

Default performance

The current checklist specifies a playable default configuration of 30 frames per second at 800p on Deck. That figure is a qualification for Valve’s review condition, not a claim that every scene will hold 30 fps on every setting, nor a promise of 60 fps. It also says nothing about battery duration, fan noise, loading times or performance after a later game update.

What does Playable mean on Steam Deck?

Playable means the game functions, but Valve identified a specific interaction, presentation or setup issue that prevents a fully seamless out-of-the-box experience. It is a warning to read the reason, not a verdict that the game is generally broken.

Common Playable friction

  • A community-made controller layout may be needed for a function that the default layout does not expose.
  • You may have to open the on-screen keyboard yourself for a login field, naming screen or code entry.
  • A launcher may require touch input, a tap on a small control or a one-time navigation step before the game starts.
  • Text, menus or prompts may be usable but less comfortable than Valve’s Verified standard.

Those cases have very different consequences. A one-time launcher tap is minor for many players; persistent remapping can matter greatly in a control-heavy game. Open the compatibility details and judge the actual intervention instead of treating every Playable badge as equivalent.

Is Unknown the same as Unsupported?

No. Unknown means Valve has not finished reviewing the title, so there is no Valve compatibility finding to interpret. Unsupported means the review identified a current functional barrier.

An Unknown game may run perfectly, require a small workaround or fail for a reason that has not yet been documented. Treat the badge as missing information rather than as either a recommendation or a warning. Do not silently substitute a rating from another Steam hardware category for a Deck rating.

Why is a game marked Unsupported?

Unsupported indicates a problem with the game, its Proton compatibility or its middleware, rather than a missing accessory. Valve’s developer documentation discusses Proton issues and unsupported middleware, including some anti-cheat systems and media codecs. These components can prevent the title from reaching playable content even when the Deck’s controls and display are otherwise suitable.

What the badge means in practice

  • It is a current finding for the reviewed build and environment.
  • It is not a ban on viewing or purchasing the game from Steam on a Deck.
  • It is not proof that the problem can never be fixed; a game update, middleware change or new compatibility work could alter the result.
  • A dock, keyboard, mouse or storage card cannot by itself repair a Proton or anti-cheat incompatibility.

Because the cause is title-specific, generic Windows repair utilities or control accessories are not an evidence-based solution to an Unsupported rating. Look for a developer update or a revised compatibility note rather than assuming a peripheral will change the result.

How do I check why a game is Playable or Unsupported?

The badge is most useful when you open the explanation attached to it. Check it immediately before installing or buying because Valve can retest a title after a game build or other relevant information changes.

  1. Open the game’s store listing or select it in your Steam Library on the Deck.
  2. Locate the Steam Deck compatibility badge near the title information.
  3. Select the badge or the compatibility-details link to display Valve’s specific notes.
  4. Identify the flagged condition: input mapping, keyboard entry, launcher navigation, text readability, default performance, Proton behavior or middleware.
  5. Compare that condition with how you plan to play. Occasional text entry is different from remapping controls every session; a touch-operated launcher is different from an in-game menu that cannot be reached.
  6. Make the purchase or installation decision using the detailed note, not the color or label alone.

A reviewed badge changes how Steam presents the game; it does not prevent you from viewing the listing or purchasing it on Deck.

Does Verified guarantee 60 fps or the best graphics settings?

No. Verified confirms that Valve’s reviewed default configuration met its compatibility and playability criteria, including the current 30-fps-at-800p default-performance requirement. It does not establish a universal frame-rate ceiling, a particular graphics preset, or a result for every resolution, refresh rate or power limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your experience can differ with an updated game build, a different Proton version, altered graphics settings, a demanding scene or a preference for higher frame rates. The badge also does not measure battery life or promise that text, camera movement or controller sensitivity will feel ideal to every player.

Do LCD and OLED Steam Deck models have different ratings?

Valve applies the same tested Deck rating to its LCD and OLED models; there is no OLED-only Verified category. A badge is a statement about Deck compatibility rather than a model-specific quality tier.

Valve describes compatibility review as ongoing, including retesting after changes to a game or new information. A title’s status is therefore time-sensitive. Check the live listing and its current details instead of relying on a static example in an older guide.

What can a dock, keyboard or storage card change?

Accessories can improve convenience without changing a compatibility finding. Valve describes its Docking Station as a way to use a keyboard and mouse with a monitor, and acknowledges compatible third-party hubs and docks on its official dock page.

Useful convenience cases

  • A USB-C dock can make desk-based play of a control-heavy title more comfortable with a full keyboard and mouse.
  • A Bluetooth keyboard can reduce friction for text-heavy games, chat or repeated code entry.
  • A mouse can help in a docked setup when a game’s interface is easier to navigate with a pointer.
  • A microSD card adds storage for installations but does not interpret, upgrade or repair a badge.

These additions may make a Playable game easier to use, but they do not turn it into Verified. They also cannot bypass a Proton, anti-cheat or codec blocker behind an Unsupported result.

How should I decide what to do with each badge?

Use the category to decide how much uncertainty and manual work you are willing to accept.

  • Playable: Read the reason first. Choose it when the listed intervention is acceptable, such as a one-time launcher action or occasional keyboard use.
  • Unknown: Treat it as an information gap. Seek current title-specific reports and keep refund or return policies in mind rather than assuming success or failure.
  • Unsupported: Assume the documented blocker is substantial unless the developer or Valve has announced a change. Do not buy an accessory expecting it to solve a software or middleware incompatibility.

What the badge does not tell you

Compatibility ratings are narrower than a complete buying guide. They do not describe the quality of a game, accessibility options, online community, save behavior, mod support, graphics preferences or whether you will enjoy its control scheme. They also do not establish offline availability: an installed game can be played offline unless that particular game requires an internet connection.

Standard compatibility review is generally for games. A demo, downloadable-content item, tool or soundtrack may not have a separate equivalent review, so check that specific item’s listing and requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many games are currently in each Steam Deck rating category?

Valve’s live compatibility pages do not provide a publication-dated, authoritative distribution of all titles across Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Avoid treating an unofficial count or a snapshot from an older date as a current percentage.

Does a Steam Deck rating cover demos, DLC or non-game software?

The standard review process is generally described for games rather than every demo, downloadable-content item, tool or soundtrack. A related item can therefore lack the same kind of reviewed badge even when its parent game has one.

Can I use a rating from another Steam hardware category for my Deck?

No. Ratings are hardware-category specific. Check for the Deck badge itself instead of carrying over a result that was issued for another Steam device.

Can I play an installed game offline regardless of its badge?

Not automatically. Valve says an installed title can run offline unless that particular game requires internet access, so offline behavior depends on the game’s own requirement rather than on whether it is Verified or Playable.
