A larger steam-cleaner tank usually supports a longer uninterrupted session, but tank volume does not convert directly into minutes. Current manufacturer figures for fixed-fill examples run from 10 minutes of continuous steam for a 6-ounce handheld to up to 50 minutes for a 54-ounce boiler. Other makers publish area per fill instead: Kärcher lists about 30 square metres for its 200 ml SC 1 Multi and allows refilling during use. Treat every number as a model-specific manufacturer claim, note whether it says “continuous steam,” “up to,” or area per tank, and separate heat-up time from actual cleaning time.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Checked
McCulloch MC1230 Short spot-cleaning jobs 6 oz tank; 10 minutes continuous steam; 3-minute heat-up Oct 2026
McCulloch MC1270 Portable room-by-room cleaning 25 oz tank; 30 minutes continuous steam; 5-minute heat-up Oct 2026
McCulloch MC1275 Longer canister sessions 48 oz tank; 45 minutes continuous steam; 8-minute heat-up Oct 2026
Dupray Neat Maximum stated fixed-fill runtime 54 oz (1,600 ml) boiler; up to 50 minutes; 8-minute heat-up Oct 2026
Kärcher SC 1 Multi Compact cleaning with top-ups 200 ml tank; about 30 m² per fill; 30-second heat-up Oct 2026

The table puts unlike measurements side by side only to show what each maker actually publishes. The first four products state a time figure; the SC 1 Multi states an area figure, so it should not be ranked as if it had a tested minute rating.

How many minutes does each tank size provide?

For the fixed-fill examples, the published span is approximately 10 to 50 minutes, but the relationship is not a universal minutes-per-ounce formula. McCulloch labels its figures “continuous steam,” Dupray says “up to” a cleaning duration, and Kärcher uses square metres per fill. Steam output, selected setting, trigger duty cycle, attachment and cleaning pace all change how quickly water is consumed.

These are specifications from individual product pages, not results from a shared cross-brand test. A 25-ounce machine cannot be assumed to run exactly five times as long as a 6-ounce model, and a 200 ml tank cannot be converted reliably to minutes from the other figures.

What does each manufacturer claim?

McCulloch MC1230: 6 ounces, 10 minutes

The MC1230 handheld has a stated 6-ounce tank and provides 10 minutes of continuous steam, according to McCulloch. Its listed heat-up time is 3 minutes. This format fits brief jobs such as a few fixtures, a small patch of tile or an isolated greasy area, where a compact reservoir is preferable to carrying a canister.

“Ten minutes” is the maker’s continuous-steam claim, not a promise that every cleaning task lasts ten minutes. Intermittent trigger use may stretch elapsed time on a job, while holding the trigger continuously uses water at the stated steam rate.

McCulloch MC1270: 25 ounces, 30 minutes

McCulloch lists the MC1270 portable cleaner with a 25-ounce tank, 30 minutes of continuous steam and a 5-minute heat-up. It is the middle example in this set: more reservoir capacity than a handheld without the 48- or 54-ounce boilers of the canister models.

Use the 30-minute figure as a model-specific planning number. It does not establish a general rule that every 25-ounce steam cleaner will deliver the same duration, because manufacturers may use different boilers, output rates and definitions of “continuous.”

McCulloch MC1275: 48 ounces, 45 minutes

The MC1275 canister is specified with a 48-ounce tank, 45 minutes of continuous steam and an 8-minute heat-up. Its larger reservoir is intended for a longer session before a water stop, although the stated duration still depends on continuous operation under the maker’s conditions.

The 45-minute claim is useful when comparing the MC1275 with other products that publish the same type of figure. It should not be divided by 48 to create a portable “minutes per ounce” benchmark for unrelated models.

Dupray Neat: 54 ounces, up to 50 minutes

Dupray lists the Neat with a 54-ounce (1,600 ml) boiler and “up to 50 minutes” of cleaning time. The product specification gives an 8-minute heat-up; Dupray’s FAQ describes the wait as about 8–9 minutes. The word “up to” matters: it identifies a maximum stated duration rather than a guaranteed time for every setting or attachment.

Dupray also says the boiler must cool before refilling. That makes the practical interruption different from a machine designed for a removable tank that can be topped up while work continues. A 50-minute headline figure therefore describes one fill under the maker’s definition, not necessarily 50 minutes of uninterrupted project time if the boiler is emptied and another fill is needed.

Kärcher SC 1 Multi: 200 ml and about 30 square metres

The Australian SC 1 Multi product page specifies a 200 ml tank and about 30 m² of cleaning per tank fill instead of a minute value. It lists a 30-second heat-up. Kärcher describes the tank as removable and refillable when needed, so the useful question is how much area you can cover between top-ups rather than how many minutes the reservoir lasts.

The SC 1 Multi manual says steam operation switches off after five minutes of continuous steaming to prevent the pump from running dry if the reservoir is empty. That is a dry-run protection behavior, not a five-minute tank-runtime specification. Confusing the safeguard with a duration claim would understate the product’s area-per-fill description.

Why can’t tank volume predict cleaning minutes?

Water capacity is only one input. A machine that produces steam faster can empty the same volume sooner; a lower setting or intermittent trigger use can extend elapsed time. Attachments also change how quickly an operator moves across a surface, so two users can consume a tank at different rates even on the same model.

Manufacturers do not use one standardized duration label. “Continuous steam” suggests the trigger is held and steam is produced without pauses. “Up to 50 minutes” signals a maximum under stated conditions. “About 30 m² per tank” measures coverage, not elapsed operation. Because the units and methods differ, cross-brand arithmetic creates a false precision that the product pages do not support.

How should heat-up time be counted?

Heat-up is waiting time before steam is ready; it is not additional cleaning runtime. The cited fixed-fill models list 3, 5 and 8 minutes, while the SC 1 Multi lists 30 seconds. Add that startup wait to your schedule, but do not add it to a manufacturer’s steam-duration number.

Model Heat-up Published operating measure
McCulloch MC1230 3 minutes 10 minutes continuous steam
McCulloch MC1270 5 minutes 30 minutes continuous steam
McCulloch MC1275 8 minutes 45 minutes continuous steam
Dupray Neat 8 minutes on specification page; about 8–9 minutes in FAQ Up to 50 minutes cleaning time
Kärcher SC 1 Multi 30 seconds About 30 m² per tank fill

For a job that involves several short pauses, a fast heat-up can matter more than a large theoretical reservoir. Conversely, a long floor-cleaning session may benefit from a larger boiler even if startup takes longer.

How does refill design change the useful runtime?

Refill behavior determines whether an empty tank ends the session. The Dupray Neat requires the boiler to cool before refilling, so changing water can create a mandatory pause. The Kärcher SC 1 Multi is described as refillable when needed, allowing the operator to continue after a top-up rather than waiting for a cooling cycle.

When comparing a new model, look for three separate facts: whether the reservoir is removable, whether the maker permits refilling while the unit is hot, and whether a safety system stops steam when water is exhausted. Do not infer any of these features from tank size alone.

What does area per fill tell you?

An area claim can be more useful than minutes when your project is measured in floors, walls or worktops. Kärcher’s SC 1 Multi figure of about 30 m² per fill gives a coverage target, but it still depends on the cleaning method and pace. It cannot be converted into a reliable minutes figure without a common speed, attachment and steam-use pattern.

A separate Kärcher Center Trafalgar sheet reports 75 m² per tank for an SC 3. That is a dealer document, not a standardized runtime study, and it also does not provide minutes. Treat it as an area statement for that product sheet, not as evidence that the SC 3 is a particular number of times faster than the SC 1 Multi. Read the SC 3 sheet for its stated context.

How should you compare steam cleaners before buying?

Use the exact wording and operating design, not capacity alone. This checklist keeps unlike specifications separate:

  1. Identify the exact market and model. Product configurations can vary by country, so start with the regional manufacturer page and full model number.
  2. Record usable water volume. Note ounces or millilitres exactly as published; do not convert the number into an assumed runtime.
  3. Copy the duration wording. Mark whether the claim says continuous steam, cleaning time up to a limit, or area per tank.
  4. Capture heat-up time separately. A 30-second or 8-minute startup changes scheduling but is not part of the cleaning-duration figure.
  5. Check operating controls. If the page states a steam setting or trigger behavior, record it because output affects water consumption.
  6. Check refill capability. Determine whether the tank can be removed, topped up during use or must cool before opening.
  7. Match the format to the job. Handheld, portable and canister designs involve different carrying and attachment arrangements; choose the format that fits the surfaces you will cover.
  8. Keep area and time in separate columns. A square-metre claim and a minute claim are not interchangeable.
  9. Record the date. Product pages and regional specifications can change, so keep the page date with your comparison.

Which tank size fits a typical cleaning task?

Small spot jobs

The 6-ounce MC1230 is the smallest fixed-fill example and has a 10-minute continuous-steam claim. It is suited to tasks where portability and a short startup outweigh the need to cover a large area in one fill.

Several rooms or a longer session

The 25-ounce MC1270’s 30-minute claim and the 48-ounce MC1275’s 45-minute claim provide progressively longer stated continuous-steam windows. Select between them by the expected session length and the value you place on carrying a larger canister, rather than by applying a universal capacity formula.

Maximum fixed-fill claim

The 54-ounce Dupray Neat has the highest stated duration in this group at up to 50 minutes, but its cool-before-refill requirement matters if the project exceeds one boiler load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compact work with top-ups

The 200 ml SC 1 Multi emphasizes about 30 m² per fill and refillability. It may suit users who prefer a small unit that can be replenished as needed instead of waiting for a large fixed boiler to cool.

What should you remember about the published numbers?

The defensible comparison is model-specific: 6 ounces and 10 minutes for the MC1230, 25 ounces and 30 minutes for the MC1270, 48 ounces and 45 minutes for the MC1275, and 54 ounces with up to 50 minutes for the Dupray Neat. The SC 1 Multi is documented as 200 ml and about 30 m² per fill, with a refillable tank, not as a minute-rated device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the quoted runtimes guaranteed for every cleaning mode?

No. “Continuous steam” and “up to” describe the manufacturer’s stated conditions, while actual elapsed time changes with trigger use, steam output and attachment. The pages do not establish a universal guarantee across settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do steam-cleaner specifications differ between countries?

They can. The SC 1 Multi figure cited here comes from Kärcher Australia, so check the product page for your market and confirm the exact model number before comparing a local listing.

Why would a manufacturer publish square metres instead of minutes?

Area per fill describes the practical coverage of a surface-cleaning session without implying a fixed operating speed. Because pace and steam use vary, an area figure can be more meaningful for planning floors or walls than a cross-brand minute conversion.

What information should I save when a product page changes?

Keep the model number, tank volume, duration wording, heat-up time, refill instructions and the date you viewed the page. That record lets you distinguish a specification change from a difference between regional editions.
