Steam beta branches are alternate builds of a game. Selecting one in Steam downloads that build and replaces the files from your current branch. Your Workshop content and multiplayer compatibility then follow the installed build: a mod made for another version may stop working or damage a save, while a friend or dedicated server on a different build may reject your connection. The safest choice is None (the public branch) for normal play, a named historical branch for a known-good older mod setup, and a preview or experimental branch only when everyone involved is prepared to run the same build.
What is a Steam beta branch?
Valve defines a branch, beta, or version as a specific build of an application made available publicly or privately through Steam. The terms are interchangeable in this context; “beta” remains the familiar Steam label because these branches were originally used for testing upcoming updates.

| Branch type | Build | Mods | Multiplayer | How you enter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Default / public (None) | Live customer version | Receives the latest compatible Workshop item versions; a new update can break older mods | Matches most friends and public servers | Properties → Game Versions & Betas → None |
| Preview / experimental / beta | Upcoming or test build | May be untested or tagged only for another branch | Usually matches only players and servers on that same build | The same tab, or an in-game switch if the title provides one |
| Historical version | Frozen older build | Best chance of preserving a known-good mod and save combination | Matches only others still on that old build; most public servers are elsewhere | The same tab, if the developer keeps the old branch available |
Branch names cannot contain spaces. A password-protected branch is hidden until you enter its password, so you cannot select it merely by knowing that it exists.

What happens when I switch to a Steam beta?
Steam keeps one active installation of an app. Choosing a branch does not install a second independent copy; it changes the files in the existing installation.
- Right-click the game in your Steam Library and choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas. Older Steam documentation calls this the Betas tab.
- Select the named branch you need. For the normal release, select None or the default option.
- Wait for Steam to download and install the selected content, then launch the game again.
Valve describes the operation plainly: “As soon as a tester or customer has selected the branch, the Steam client will start downloading the branch, replacing their currently installed branch.” When you opt into anything other than the default, Steam also shows the selected branch beside the Play button.
To leave a beta, return to the same tab and select None. Steam will reinstall the public branch files. If you use a title’s in-game version selector instead, the game may close and restart Steam automatically while it changes branches.
Why did a Steam update break my Workshop mods?
Workshop subscriptions normally track the latest uploaded version of an item. If the game moves to a new build and a mod depends on old code, data formats, or assets, that latest item can fail to load, produce errors, or make a save unusable.
Steamworks SDK 1.60 added item-to-branch versioning. A mod author can mark each uploaded item version with a minimum and maximum Steam branch. Steam then chooses an item version that is valid for the branch you have installed. If several uploaded versions are valid, Steam downloads the latest uploaded compatible version.
The range rules matter:
- If both minimum and maximum branches are empty, the item version is treated as valid for every branch.
- An empty minimum means the version works on branches up to the stated maximum.
- An empty maximum means it works on the stated minimum and every later branch.
- Setting both to the same branch restricts the item version to that branch.
An untagged mod is therefore not proof that it truly works with your build. It simply tells Steam that the author has not narrowed its supported range. Valve says ranges are useful because simple items may continue working across updates, while complex items can be held back until the author checks a new game version.

How does Workshop branch matching get enabled?
This protection is not automatic for every game. The developer must configure both the game branches and the Workshop integration, and mod authors must publish versions with sensible ranges.
- On SteamPipe’s Builds page, the developer keeps historical and current builds as named branches in deliberate oldest-to-newest order.
- On the game’s Workshop configuration page, the developer selects Enable Game Branch Versions and publishes the setting.
- The game calls
ISteamApps::GetBetaInfoand related APIs to identify the player’s branch. - It queries subscribed items and calls
ISteamUGC::GetSupportedGameVersionDatafor their supported ranges. - If a subscribed mod does not match the running build, the game can warn the player and, with consent, call
ISteamApps::SetActiveBetato move to a compatible branch.
Valve’s documentation notes that calling SetActiveBeta exits the running game, starts installing the other branch, and restarts the game in that version. If a title has never enabled Game Branch Versions, you will not see this automated mod-to-branch behavior, even if the game offers ordinary Steam beta branches.
Can I use an older Steam version to keep my mods working?
Yes, but only when the developer has published and retained a historical branch. Select that branch in Properties → Game Versions & Betas, let Steam finish the download, and then launch the game with the old mod set.
This approach works best when the save, game build, and mods were all created for the same release. Keep a backup of important saves before changing versions. A historical branch protects you from the public branch’s updates, but it does not make an incompatible mod compatible with that old build, and it cannot restore a branch the developer has removed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Valve specifically recommends preserving an earlier branch when a major update could break existing mods, allowing players to continue a long-running save while mod authors update their items.
Why can’t I join my friend after switching to beta?
Multiplayer sessions generally require clients and servers to use the same game build and network protocol. Steam installs only one branch at a time, so a client on an experimental branch and a friend or server on the public branch are usually incompatible.

- Check the selected branch on every player’s machine in Properties → Game Versions & Betas.
- Compare the actual game update or BuildID when the game exposes it; a matching branch name alone is not a guarantee if the branch has just received different content.
- For normal public matchmaking, return every client to None.
- For a private test, move every client and the host to the same named branch and patch.
Valve’s ISteamApps::MarkContentCorrupt documentation uses a version mismatch with a server as the example of an out-of-date client. A game can force a file verification, display an error, and quit rather than allow a mismatched connection. There is no single Steam-wide switch that always blocks cross-branch play; enforcement is handled by each game’s networking and matchmaking code.
How do I update a dedicated server to the same branch?
A dedicated server is a separate Steam app or installation and must be pinned to the same branch as its clients. SteamCMD uses the -beta argument with the branch name.
steamcmd +app_update <id> -beta <branchname> validate
For a stable/public server, many branch-using games document an explicit command such as:
steamcmd +app_update <id> -beta public validate
An experimental server would use its game’s exact experimental branch name instead:
steamcmd +app_update <id> -beta experimental validate
Branch names and patch labels are game-specific and can change. In some SteamCMD workflows, omitting -beta leaves the tool on the last remembered branch, so specifying -beta public is the reliable way to return to the stable build. Check the game’s server documentation for the current app ID and branch spelling.
What should I do when mods stop working after an update?
Use this order so you do not accidentally update a save or server while diagnosing the problem.

- Open Properties → Game Versions & Betas and record whether the game is on None/default or a named branch.
- If the break began with a public update, look for a developer-published historical branch matching the previous game version.
- Select that branch, wait for Steam to finish installing it, and relaunch before opening your primary save.
- Open each Workshop item’s change notes or history and look for supported game-version information. A missing range means Steam treats the item as valid for all branches, not that the author verified every one.
- Disable or remove only the mod that fails if the game identifies it, and test with a backup save rather than your original.
- If the game still reports a mismatch, verify the installed files. Valve’s developer-side equivalent is detecting the mismatch, calling
MarkContentCorrupt, showing a message, and quitting so Steam can verify the content. - If multiplayer is the goal, return to None/default unless every participant and the server can use the same historical or preview branch.
How can developers reduce mod and multiplayer breakage?
Valve’s branch guidance treats versioning as a release-management tool, not merely a hidden test switch. Developers can ship a new build to a beta branch first, let mod authors update and tag their items, and promote that build to default only after compatibility work is ready.
- Name branches after game versions, such as
version_1.4andversion_1.5, so ranges have an understandable order. - Keep old branches when players need them for saves or mods.
- Enable Game Branch Versions on the Workshop configuration page.
- Add an in-game screen listing subscribed items and warning when the newest game build is not supported.
- Use
GetCurrentBetaName,GetNumBetas,GetBetaInfo, andGetAppBuildIdto identify the active branch and build. - Offer a clear choice to stay on a save-compatible branch or move to the new release, then call
SetActiveBetaonly after the player agrees.
Valve describes branches as useful for controlling development risk and balancing multiplayer gameplay. A netcode or balance change can be isolated to a preview audience before it reaches the public population.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which branch should I choose?
Choose based on whether stability, mod continuity, or early access matters most:
- Choose None/default when you want the broadest access to friends, public servers, and the current release.
- Choose a historical branch when a known mod collection or save depends on an older build and the developer still provides that branch.
- Choose preview or experimental when you are testing an upcoming update and can accept broken mods, changing behavior, and limited multiplayer.
- Choose the same branch as the host when joining a private multiplayer session; branch and patch must agree on every machine.
Valve has not published a Steam-wide percentage of mods that break after updates, a count of games using Game Branch Versions, or a universal cross-branch failure rate. The risk is real but game-specific, so the branch list, Workshop metadata, and server documentation for the particular title are the decisive evidence.
What are the limits of Steam’s branch and mod system?
Branch-aware Workshop delivery depends on cooperation. A developer may publish a beta without preserving the previous build, or may never enable Game Branch Versions. A mod author may leave ranges open, tag an item incorrectly, or stop updating it. In those cases Steam can deliver the newest technically “valid” item even though the mod fails in practice.
Historical branches also isolate players from the live ecosystem. Friends who remain on the public build cannot normally join, and public servers usually update away from the old branch. Password protection adds another access barrier because the branch is invisible until the correct password is entered.

What does in-game branch switching change for players?
Some developers now expose branch selection inside their own menus instead of requiring the Steam Properties dialog. The game can show the current version, compare a save’s recorded version with available branches, and ask whether to move back before loading it.
The underlying API is still SetActiveBeta. Steam exits the game, installs the selected branch, and restarts. Afterward, Steam shows the branch beside the Play button, giving you a second way to confirm which build is active.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing branches delete my Workshop subscriptions?
No. Subscriptions remain associated with your Steam account, but the client selects which uploaded item version to download for the active branch when the game supports branch-aware Workshop metadata. An item without a declared range may still download on every branch even when it is functionally incompatible.
How can I tell whether a branch is password protected?
A protected branch does not appear as an ordinary selectable name until the required password has been entered in the game’s branch settings. Ask the developer or server host for the current password; knowing the branch’s public name alone is not enough.
Can two players on the same branch still fail to connect?
Yes. A branch can receive a different update on the client or server, or the game can require an exact BuildID or protocol revision. Compare each side’s installed build and update both installations rather than relying only on the displayed branch label.
Does Steam keep the previous branch available so I can switch back instantly?
Steam does not promise a permanent local copy of every branch. Returning to another branch may require Steam to download its files again, and a historical branch is usable only while the developer continues to publish it.
