If a released Steam game now contains player-facing AI content that its original disclosure did not describe, correct the game’s Steamworks Content Survey first. Open the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content section and revise the applicable answer when Steamworks allows it. If the affected result is locked, contact Steam Support with a concise summary of the change, the survey result that is now inaccurate, and instructions showing how a tester can reach the content. Update any public store-page wording and the shipped build through their own publishing workflows; neither one replaces a survey correction. Valve distinguishes AI content generated during development and shipped to players from content generated while the game runs, and live generation requires an explanation of safeguards against illegal output. This guide explains how to classify the change, correct each Steamworks record, and verify that the public game matches the disclosure.
What exactly has to change after an AI feature is added?
Steam treats three records as related but separate: the Content Survey, the written store page, and the build players install. The Content Survey is where Valve asks about Generative Artificial Intelligence Content. A sentence in the store description can explain the feature to customers, but it is not a documented substitute for correcting the survey.

Start with the record that is factually wrong. If the game now ships AI-created art, voices, music, dialogue, translation, or another player-consumed asset, the survey may need a new answer even when the store copy is unchanged. If the public description makes a claim that is no longer accurate, edit and publish that page separately. If the executable or data files changed, deploy a new build separately. Valve’s Content Survey documentation, Store Page, Building and Editing, and Updating Game Build pages describe those workflows independently.
Does the game’s AI use belong in the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content section?
Classify the feature by what players receive, not by the marketing label for the tool. Valve’s survey focuses on AI that creates content shipped to or consumed by players. It is not primarily a declaration of ordinary productivity software used by artists, programmers, or producers.

Pre-generated content
Pre-generated AI content is made during development and included in the release for players to consume. Examples can include character illustrations, textures, music, sound effects, voice lines, scripted narrative, and localization produced with a generative system before the build is shipped. The generation happens before the player starts the game, even if the resulting files are assembled dynamically at runtime.
Live-generated content
Live-generated content is created while the game is running, usually in response to a player’s prompt, action, or changing game state. A conversational character that writes a new response during play, an image generator that creates a unique item on demand, or a system that produces dialogue for each session fits this category. This category carries an additional survey requirement: explain the guardrails intended to prevent illegal content.

An AI assistant used to refactor code, generate test data, or accelerate an internal art workflow is not, by itself, the player-facing content that this survey section is designed to capture. The relevant question is whether the tool helped create content that ships in the game or creates content for the player while the game runs. If an internal tool produced final artwork or dialogue included in the release, classify the shipped result rather than treating the tool as irrelevant.
How should you inventory the change before opening Steamworks?
A short inventory prevents an incorrect answer and gives support enough detail if Steamworks locks the result. Record the following for the current release:
- What changed: identify the new, modified, or previously undisclosed player-facing content.
- When generation occurs: note whether it was created during development (pre-generated) or during play (live-generated).
- What players can reach: list the menu, level, NPC, prompt, mode, or account entitlement that exposes it.
- Which release contains it: record the build or update in which the content first appeared.
- Which existing answer is inaccurate: identify the affected result in the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content section rather than describing only the feature name.
- What safeguards exist: for live generation, document filters, blocked categories, moderation, reporting, review, or other controls intended to prevent illegal output.
- What public wording is stale: compare the store description, screenshots, trailers, and feature bullets with the current game so you can decide whether a store-page edit is also needed.
Keep this inventory factual. Do not label a system “AI-generated” merely because it uses a rules engine, procedural generation, a fixed database, or a non-generative machine-learning classifier. Conversely, do not omit a player-facing asset simply because it was generated offline.
How do you edit the Content Survey when the result is editable?
Use the game’s Steamworks application dashboard and work in the Content Survey, specifically the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content section. Valve does not publish one universal post-approval click path for every partner account, so the labels and available controls can differ. The reliable procedure is to edit the answer that describes the current release and submit or save the survey through the controls shown for your account.

- Open the correct application. Confirm that the app ID and partner account correspond to the released game, not a demo, playtest, or separate package.
- Open Content Survey. Locate the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content questions. Read the existing answers before changing them; the goal is to correct the inaccurate result, not to rewrite unrelated content declarations.
- Choose the applicable generation type. Select the pre-generated or live-generated description that matches when the content is created and consumed.
- Describe the implementation accurately. Identify the player-facing media or feature and where it appears. If the form asks for additional detail, explain the actual flow rather than promising capabilities the build does not have.
- Provide live-generation safeguards. For a live system, state how the game is designed to prevent illegal content. Mention the relevant technical and operational controls without claiming that a filter makes every output safe.
- Save or submit the survey. Follow the available Steamworks control and note the date, editor, and resulting status in your release records.
- Check for a lock or validation message. If Steamworks will not let you change the affected result, stop trying to force a different field and use the support route below.
Changing a survey answer does not upload files, switch the default branch, or publish a store description. Those actions remain separate.

What should you do if Steamworks locks the affected result?
Some, but not necessarily all, survey questions become uneditable after a build and store page have been approved. Valve’s Content Survey FAQ addresses the situation with the question, “I’ve updated content in my game, but I can’t update certain results in my survey?” When the affected result is locked, Valve instructs developers to contact Steam Support.
Prepare a concise support request containing three items:
- Change summary: explain what AI-created content was added, removed, or changed and which release introduced the difference.
- Affected survey result: name the Generative Artificial Intelligence Content result that no longer matches the game.
- Tester access instructions: give reproducible steps for a reviewer to reach the content, including the menu, level, mode, account requirement, prompt, or other trigger.
Use the Steam Support link provided from the Content Survey FAQ and sign in with the partner account when prompted. The support form redirects unauthenticated visitors to sign-in, so do not promise that an anonymous request will be accepted. Include enough detail for a tester to see the feature without guessing, but do not attach confidential keys or credentials unless Valve specifically requests them.
Valve does not publish a universal processing time for a support-assisted survey correction. A released game generally does not repeat its initial store review for ordinary updates, according to the Review Process documentation; that general statement does not remove the Content Survey instruction to contact support for a locked result. Avoid announcing a deadline or approval outcome until Steamworks or Support confirms the change.
How do you correct the public store description?
Edit the store page separately when its wording no longer describes the current AI feature. Valve’s Store Page, Building and Editing documentation says saved but unpublished edits are not public, while published store-page edits appear immediately.
- Open the application’s store-page editor. Select the released app and locate the section containing the outdated description, feature list, or disclosure.
- Replace the stale statement. State whether content is pre-generated or live-generated when that distinction matters to customers. Keep the wording consistent with the Content Survey and the actual build.
- Preview where appropriate. Check formatting, screenshots, capsules, and language versions that your edit affects.
- Use the Publish tab. Save the draft, then publish it from the Publish tab when it is ready. A saved draft alone does not change what customers see.
- Verify the live page. Open the public store URL in a separate session and confirm that the new text is visible.
The “immediately after publishing” statement applies to a published store-page edit. It does not establish how long Valve may take to process a support-assisted survey correction.
How do you deploy a build that contains the AI change?
If the disclosure change corresponds to new files, prompts, models, moderation services, or other executable behavior, deploy the build through the normal build pipeline. A survey edit does not deploy a build.

- Upload the candidate build. Use the SteamPipe or other configured Steamworks upload process for the app.
- Test on a non-default branch. Valve’s Updating Game Build guidance describes uploading and testing a build on a test branch before making it the player-facing default.
- Exercise the AI path. Confirm that the tester instructions you supplied for Support work on the candidate build, including any account, entitlement, network, language, or progression requirement.
- Check safeguards and failure modes. Test blocked prompts, unavailable services, moderation responses, and offline behavior according to your own release criteria. Do not describe a safeguard in the survey that is absent from the build.
- Set the approved build as default. After internal checks, follow Steamworks’ branch controls to make the chosen build the default for players.
- Record the deployment. Save the build identifier and release date alongside the survey and store-page change record.
Changing a build is useful only when the build itself changed. If the correction is purely an administrative disclosure update, do not imply that a new executable was deployed.
What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI content?
The timing of generation determines the survey category and the extra explanation Valve expects for live systems.

A single game can use both categories. For example, an AI-generated set of portraits packaged in the build is pre-generated, while a conversational NPC that writes new replies during play is live-generated. Describe each applicable use rather than choosing one label for the entire project.
Which Steamworks workflow fixes which problem?
Use the workflow that owns the inaccurate information. Updating one record does not prove that the other two changed.

Keeping the records synchronized is especially important when the game description says “AI-generated” but the survey still has an older answer, or when a survey answer claims live generation while the released build contains only fixed assets.
What guardrails must be described for live-generated content?
Valve requires an explanation of guardrails intended to prevent illegal content when content is generated live. Describe controls that actually exist in the product, such as input filtering, output filtering, blocked request classes, moderation queues, reporting and removal processes, or restrictions on who can invoke the generator. The survey is not a place to claim perfect prevention or to substitute a general content-policy link for an explanation of the implementation.
Disclosure does not grant permission to ship prohibited material. Valve’s content rules continue to apply regardless of what the survey says. Valve also states that it does not want to ship Adult Only Sexual Content generated live by AI at this time. That statement is specific: it should not be expanded into a claim that every AI feature or every adult-themed game is categorically banned.

If a safeguard changes after release, treat that as a substantive implementation change. Recheck the survey answer, the store wording, and the live build rather than assuming that an earlier disclosure remains accurate.
What are the common mistakes when correcting an AI disclosure?
Editing only the store description
A prominent paragraph on the store page does not replace the Content Survey. Correct the survey result and publish the public wording as separate tasks.
Assuming every field is locked
Valve says some questions may become uneditable after approval, not that every AI field is permanently locked. Open the survey and check the controls for the affected result before contacting Support.
Assuming every field is editable
The opposite assumption is also unsafe. If Steamworks prevents the change, use the Support route and provide the three pieces of information Valve requests instead of silently leaving an inaccurate answer.
Calling offline assets “live AI”
Assets generated during development and packaged in the release are pre-generated. Live-generated means the game creates new content while it runs.
Leaving out the tester path
A reviewer cannot validate a feature that requires a particular save, prompt, language, or entitlement without instructions. Include the shortest reliable route to the content.
Promising a support turnaround
Valve does not publish an SLA for support-assisted survey corrections. Report the request as pending until Steamworks or Support confirms the result.

Treating a survey edit as a deployment
Survey answers do not upload files or switch branches. Use the build workflow when code or content changed.
Overstating compliance
A corrected disclosure is not an exemption from Steam’s content rules, copyright obligations, privacy duties, or other applicable requirements. State what the game does and what controls it uses without presenting the survey as approval of the underlying content.

Verification has two parts: account-side confirmation and a public-content check.
- Capture the final survey state. Save the updated result, submission status, and date in the release record. If Support handled the change, retain the ticket and Valve’s response.
- Confirm the public store page. Check the published description and any language or feature section you edited. Remember that a saved draft is not public.
- Check the live build. On the default player branch, follow the same tester path used in the survey request. Confirm that the AI content and its safeguards match the description.
- Compare all three records. The survey classification, store wording, and shipped behavior should describe the same implementation and generation timing.
- Monitor later updates. A new model, prompt, asset pack, moderation rule, or game mode can make an old disclosure inaccurate again. Repeat the inventory process whenever player-facing AI behavior changes.
Valve says it compares survey answers with store-page and build content during review. That makes consistency more than an administrative preference: contradictory records can make it harder for a reviewer or customer to understand what the game actually provides.
