State of Decay 3 is planned to support solo play or online co-op for up to four people total. Its defining multiplayer change is a continuing shared save: friends can return to the same community at different times, advance the story, build facilities, recruit survivors, and manage settlements even when another player is away. This is not confirmation of a dedicated server or a world that keeps simulating while everyone is offline. Survivor permadeath also remains central, but the exact rules for a dead character’s inventory, recovery, and individual player progression have not been published.
The details below describe the invitation-only closed beta and developer announcements available through October 30, 2026. Undead Labs says the beta is unfinished, and the announced public-release target is 2027, so systems can change.

Undead Labs describes State of Decay 3 as playable alone or with up to three friends online, for a maximum of four players in one shared community. “Four players” means four people total, including the person who created or owns the save; it does not mean four additional guests.
| Mode | Players | What the announcements establish |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | One | The community, survivors, settlements, missions, and story are managed by one player. |
| Online co-op | Up to four total | Friends can work in the same world, split up, recruit survivors, run missions, and manage settlements. |
| Local or split-screen | Not announced | Official material describes online multiplayer; it does not confirm couch co-op. |
The four-player limit appears in both the official Xbox listing and Undead Labs’ October 2026 beta announcement. Those descriptions do not establish matchmaking rules, whether every platform can join every other platform, or whether a subscription is required on each platform. Xbox says online console multiplayer requires an applicable subscription sold separately.

Can friends play in the same world when the host is offline?
Yes, the announced design allows different players to make changes to one shared save at different times. Creative director Kevin Patzelt described it this way: “You can come in, asynchronously of me, playing the same save at different times.” The example given includes one person advancing the story or building facilities while another is away.
This is different from a temporary co-op visit in which guests leave with no effect on the host’s campaign. A friend’s session can contribute to the same community, its facilities, its survivors, and its story state. It is best understood as asynchronous shared progression rather than as a permanently running online world.
Nothing in the published descriptions confirms that the map continues to simulate while nobody is playing. There is also no confirmation of a dedicated server that remains online independently of the players, an always-online requirement, or automatic resource losses during a period when the community is not loaded. Those distinctions matter: a shared save can preserve changes made during a session without simulating every hour between sessions.
The clearest current explanation appears in Patzelt’s June 2026 Xbox Wire interview. Treat it as a description of the intended system, not a guarantee that every detail is final at launch.
What progress is shared in State of Decay 3 co-op?
The announcements describe progress as a collection of community and settlement changes, not merely an experience bar attached to one player. The following systems are specifically named for the beta or developer demonstrations.

Story and facilities
A player can advance the story and build facilities in the shared save while friends are absent. When another player returns, those world-level changes are part of the same community rather than a separate guest copy. The statements do not explain whether every story mission can be completed in any order or how conflicting choices are resolved.
Survivors and recruitment
Every participant is described as having access to recruiting survivors and running missions. Enclaves can eventually be recruited along with their settlement. Because recruits become part of the community, a friend’s choices can change the roster available to everyone using that save.

Settlements and their upkeep
The beta description allows a community to operate up to three settlements and move survivors among them. Facilities require upkeep, while food and water are described as daily needs. These systems give co-op sessions consequences beyond combat: a player who specializes in construction, supply management, recruitment, or missions can alter the condition of the shared community.
Threats to supply lines
Plague Nests and their hearts can threaten settlements and supply lines. That makes a friend’s independent activity potentially important to the group, because the systems being described connect settlements, resources, and survivor safety. It does not establish that an offline player’s character automatically loses supplies or health; it only shows why shared-world actions can matter to everyone who returns later.

The announced design is intended to let players spread out rather than forcing everyone to stay beside the host. Friends can pursue separate tasks, recruit survivors, run missions, and manage settlements independently. The developer’s descriptions contrast this with a “ride-along” style of co-op in which guests simply follow the host.
One practical arrangement would be for two players to work from one settlement while others operate a second or third base. Another could divide responsibilities: one person handles a mission, another recruits an enclave, and a third improves facilities. All of those actions are described as affecting the shared community.
However, the sources do not state a maximum distance between players, whether missions can always be started independently, or what happens if two players trigger incompatible story objectives. They also do not define personal rewards, host ownership, or whether a participant keeps a separate character roster outside the shared save. Avoid assuming those rules until Undead Labs publishes them.
Can each player run a different base?
Up to three settlements are planned, and the beta description explicitly imagines friends running different bases. Survivors can be moved between settlements, so the community is not limited to one permanent headquarters.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, a four-person group could divide its work like this:
- Settlement one: a shared starting base where players regroup, store supplies, and coordinate missions.
- Settlement two: a forward position managed by one player, with survivors and facilities suited to nearby threats.
- Settlement three: a specialist or expansion base operated by another player and supplied by the wider community.
This is an example of how the announced systems could be organized, not a promise that the game assigns one settlement to each person. The available descriptions do not specify whether bases have unique building restrictions, whether every player can place every facility, or how control is transferred when the person who developed a settlement is absent.

Because survivors can move between settlements, the three-base limit is a community capacity rather than a strict personal-home limit. Moving people may also affect defense, labor, and supplies, but the beta information does not publish detailed formulas for those trade-offs.
What happens when a survivor dies?
Survivor permadeath is confirmed, but the player-specific consequences are not. The official Xbox listing calls it “an ever-present danger to your community.” Undead Labs has also said its narrative systems are being built so that losing a longtime survivor matters to the surrounding community.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That means a death is intended to be more than a temporary knockout. A survivor who has accumulated relationships, skills, equipment, or responsibilities can leave a meaningful gap in the community. The published material does not say that a whole shared save resets, that friends are barred from the world, or that another player can restore the same survivor.
The following details remain open:
- Whether a dead survivor’s inventory can be recovered, and by whom.
- Whether a different player can recruit or control a replacement immediately.
- How skills, relationships, or unfinished missions tied to the dead survivor are handled.
- Whether the death affects all players’ personal progression or only the shared community.
- Whether any difficulty, warning, or recovery options can reduce the risk.
Do not promise friends that a dangerous mission is reversible. The safe assumption for planning is that a survivor loss can permanently change the community, while the exact recovery and ownership rules await a more complete specification. The permadeath language comes from the official Xbox listing; the broader discussion of meaningful losses appears in the 2024 Xbox Wire interview.
How is this different from State of Decay 2 co-op?
The important distinction is the intended save structure. Earlier discussion of State of Decay 3 described a shared world rather than a guest simply riding along in the host’s campaign, drawing on Undead Labs’ experience with shared-save collaboration on Grounded. The newer 2026 descriptions are more specific: players can return at different times and make changes to the same save.
That does not mean every State of Decay 2 rule has been replaced or that all progression transfers between games. It means the comparison should focus on the model announced for the new game:
| Question | State of Decay 3 announcement | What is still unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Can players be online together? | Yes, up to four total. | Detailed matchmaking and cross-platform rules. |
| Can a friend play at another time? | Yes, the same save can be changed asynchronously. | Whether the save has a formal owner or administrator. |
| Must everyone stay together? | No; players can pursue separate tasks and settlements. | Any distance or mission-specific limits. |
| What happens after a death? | Permadeath remains an ever-present community danger. | Inventory recovery, replacement, and personal progression rules. |
When can you play State of Decay 3?
State of Decay 3 has not publicly launched. Undead Labs announced an invitation-based closed beta opening October 13, 2026, with existing alpha testers included and other players able to sign up for possible invitations. A sign-up is an opportunity to be considered, not a guaranteed place. The developer labels the build a work in progress.
The announced public-release target remains 2027, without a confirmed day or month. Xbox currently advertises Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, Game Pass, and Xbox Play Anywhere as platform or access options. Availability, editions, pricing, cross-play, and save-transfer details can change before launch.

What multiplayer details are not confirmed yet?
Several features that players commonly assume from modern co-op games have not been announced for State of Decay 3. Keep these questions separate from the confirmed shared-save design:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Dedicated servers or a continuously simulated world when nobody is playing.
- Local split-screen or couch co-op.
- Cross-play between Xbox, PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5.
- Cross-progression or save transfer between platforms.
- Public matchmaking, invite limits beyond the four-player cap, or drop-in/drop-out restrictions.
- Whether the person who starts a save can restore an earlier version after a fatal mistake.
- Exact rewards, inventory rights, and character ownership for non-host players.
- How simultaneous story choices, settlement moves, or conflicting missions are resolved.
These omissions are normal for a game still in beta, but they are important when deciding how to organize a group. Do not treat a platform listing or a developer aspiration as proof of a feature that has not been described.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a group prepare for shared-save co-op?
You can plan around the systems that have been described without assuming undocumented rules. Before beginning a community, agree on who will coordinate the save, how settlements will be divided, and how the group will respond to a survivor death.
- Choose a community coordinator. Because story and facility changes affect one shared save, nominate someone to record major decisions and tell returning players what changed.
- Assign settlement roles. If the group uses two or three bases, decide which player watches each location, which supplies can be moved, and when survivors should be transferred.
- Set a mission-risk rule. Permadeath is confirmed, so agree on when to retreat, who handles high-risk objectives, and whether inexperienced survivors should avoid major threats.
- Track daily needs. Food, water, facility upkeep, Plague Nests, and supply lines are all described as community concerns. Check those systems before starting a long mission.
- Record unresolved decisions. Since the game’s final rules for rewards, ownership, and recovery are not published, avoid promising a friend that a specific item, survivor, or story result will belong exclusively to them.
This approach treats the shared save as a cooperative settlement rather than a sequence of isolated guest sessions. It also leaves room to revise your agreements when the final game explains its permissions and recovery systems.
Frequently asked questions
Does “up to four players” include the host?
Yes. The announced limit is four people total: one player plus as many as three friends. It is not four guests in addition to the person running the save.

Can I move my State of Decay 3 save from Xbox to PC or PlayStation?
No save-transfer or cross-progression rule has been announced. Xbox Play Anywhere is listed as an availability feature, but that listing alone does not establish how shared saves, characters, or achievements move between platforms.
Does the game keep running while every player is offline?
That has not been confirmed. The evidence supports asynchronous access to one save—players make changes during their own sessions—not a dedicated simulation that continues after everyone logs out.
