State of Decay 3 supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players total—the host plus three friends. Xbox listings also advertise cross-platform multiplayer and co-op, but no official Xbox–PC–Steam–PS5 pairing matrix or invitation procedure has been published. The game is targeting 2027, so several details remain provisional. Shared-world progression is the central feature: players can change the same world at different times, recruit survivors, run missions and manage settlements independently. Offline solo play, split-screen, LAN play and cross-store save transfers have not been confirmed.

The confirmed model is online, asynchronous shared-world co-op. You can play alone or join the same campaign with up to three other people, and those players are not required to stay beside one another on the map. Xbox’s product page lists online co-op for two to four players, while Undead Labs describes the beta build as working “the same whether you’re alone or with up to three friends.”

How many people can play State of Decay 3 co-op?
Up to four people can occupy one online session. That means one host and as many as three friends, not four friends in addition to the host. The Xbox Store expresses the range as two to four players, so a session can also be a two-player game.
Nothing in the published listing raises the limit for larger groups, and the available material does not describe raids, matchmaking squads or a separate competitive mode. If you are planning a four-person group, each participant should count the host as one of the four slots.
How does shared progression work?
State of Decay 3 is designed around one world that its members can change at different times. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt summarized the idea in Xbox Wire: “In a shared world, any one of us can make changes to the world.”
What friends can change
The described activities include advancing the story, constructing facilities, adding settlements, recruiting survivors and managing those settlements. The same save can be accessed asynchronously, so one player can continue while another is away and the returning player can see the world’s accumulated changes.
Can players split up?
Yes, the co-op description says the mode is untethered. Players are not presented as permanently tethered to the host’s position, allowing separate objectives and exploration across the map. The beta material also describes three settlements in the shared world.

What is not promised
Shared-world progression is not the same as a guarantee that every visitor’s personal inventory, character state or separate campaign will advance identically. The published descriptions do not explain which individual items follow a guest home, whether all quest rewards are duplicated, or how conflicting changes are resolved. They also do not establish that the world runs on a persistent server when nobody is playing; asynchronous access only means a friend can return later to the shared save.
Can Xbox, Steam and PS5 players play together?
Cross-play is advertised, but the exact platform combinations are still unspecified. The Xbox Store labels the game with cross-platform multiplayer and cross-platform co-op, and Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. Those labels confirm the feature category, not every possible console-to-PC pairing.

The platform announcements establish availability, but they do not provide account-linking rules, friend-code requirements, invitation screens or a complete matrix such as Xbox-to-PS5 or Steam-to-PS5. Do not assume that the presence of a cross-platform label answers those operational questions.

Can I play State of Decay 3 offline?
Solo play is confirmed, but offline solo access is not. The official descriptions do not say whether the game requires an internet connection, account authentication or a server check when you play alone. Online co-op is, by definition, advertised as an online mode.
A friend being absent while another person continues the shared save is asynchronous online design, not evidence of an offline mode. Until Undead Labs or Xbox publishes an offline/authentication policy, players who need guaranteed no-connection play should treat that capability as unknown.

Is there split-screen or couch co-op?
No local mode has been announced in the checked descriptions. The listed multiplayer feature is online co-op; neither split-screen nor LAN play appears in the official Xbox and Steam descriptions available for this pre-release build.
That is a statement about what has been announced, not proof that local play is technically impossible. Buying a second controller does not create a confirmed local player slot. Each person should plan on using their own supported device and online connection unless a later feature list says otherwise.

How do saves and Play Anywhere work?
Xbox lists cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox describes Play Anywhere as progress syncing through an Xbox account between eligible Xbox console and PC versions, so an Xbox player can use the supported console and PC editions without treating them as wholly separate Xbox campaigns.
That coverage has clear boundaries. No official statement currently extends the same save to Steam or PlayStation 5, and no documentation says that a co-op visitor’s personal progression automatically transfers to their own account across stores. A shared world that several players edit is therefore different from universal cross-platform save portability.
Practical expectation
- Xbox console and eligible Xbox PC versions: cloud-save and Play Anywhere support are listed.
- Steam to Xbox, Steam to PS5 or PS5 to Xbox: save paths are not specified.
- Guest inventory and independent campaign transfer: not specified.
Wait for platform-account documentation before moving a campaign between ecosystems or assuming a guest can take every reward back to a separate save.
What do I need for online co-op?
You need the game on a supported platform, an internet connection for the online session and friends using a compatible version. Xbox’s US Store states that online console multiplayer requires a separately sold Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription. That condition is specifically for online console multiplayer; it should not be applied automatically to PC, and it does not establish a subscription requirement for solo play.

Steam currently presents State of Decay 3 as a wishlist title rather than a purchasable release. Availability, pricing and account-invitation details can therefore change before launch. No official page cited here specifies whether one purchase covers every platform or how cross-store ownership is handled.
What platforms and release timing are confirmed?
Xbox has announced Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5 versions, with a 2027 target. The main release announcement names Series X|S rather than a native Xbox One launch. The US Store has displayed an Xbox One compatibility label, but that label should not be treated as a promise of a separate Xbox One release.
Undead Labs announced a closed beta on October 9, 2026 and described it as an evolving build in which numbers and some interface details can change. The announcement gave October 13 as the opening date, but an opening date does not prove that every applicant entered the test. Beta behavior is useful context for the design, not a final launch specification.

No. A standard supported input device is sufficient for the game’s own device, and no game-specific performance benefit from a premium controller has been established. Microsoft documents the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core as an optional controller for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC; it does not add a local co-op slot or make PS5 play possible.
Do not buy multiple controllers as a workaround for the unannounced split-screen mode. A controller purchase solves an input preference on one device, not the unresolved question of local multiplayer.

What should co-op players verify before launch?
Because this is pre-release information, check these items again when a dated launch page or support FAQ appears:
- The complete Xbox, Xbox PC, Steam and PS5 cross-play pairing matrix.
- Whether invitations require linked platform accounts, a game-specific account or a code.
- Offline authentication and internet requirements for solo campaigns.
- Whether split-screen or LAN play is added.
- How guest inventory, rewards and independent survivor progression are saved.
- Any revised release date, platform list or online-console subscription rule.
Those are the gaps that determine whether a particular group can play together smoothly; the currently confirmed headline is four-player online shared-world co-op, not a promise that every platform combination or save path is already documented.
How was this co-op information selected?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2027 release date firm?
No. Xbox and Undead Labs describe 2027 as a target, not a dated launch commitment. Until a day-and-date announcement appears, the timing should be treated as provisional.
Does “four times the size” mean the game has four separate maps?
No. Kevin Patzelt’s comparison is that the playable space is about four times the size of one State of Decay 2 map. It is a scale comparison, not a statement that the game is divided into four identical maps or an independently measured benchmark.
