Yes, a future shutdown of Undead Labs would not automatically make an installed, properly licensed copy of State of Decay 2 stop working—but nobody has promised that the game will remain playable forever. More importantly, Undead Labs has not announced a shutdown: on September 22, 2026, it announced that it had separated from Xbox and become an independent, employee-owned studio, while development of State of Decay 3 continued. As of October 30, 2026, State of Decay 2 is still listed for purchase and Game Pass access, and its online co-op still depends on Xbox services.
Is Undead Labs shutting down?
No. Undead Labs’ September 22, 2026 announcement described a change in ownership and status: the studio separated from Xbox and became independent and employee-owned. It also said work on State of Decay 3 was continuing. That announcement is not a closure notice, and it does not say that Xbox services or State of Decay 2 are being switched off.

Independence and closure are different events. The studio’s announcement establishes its status on that date; it does not promise what the studio, its games, or platform services will do indefinitely. So the accurate answer to “Is Undead Labs shutting down?” is no—not according to its latest announcement as of October 30, 2026.
Did State of Decay 2 stop receiving updates?
Undead Labs ended the game’s content-update cycle in October 2024, but that is not the same as ending the game or removing access to it. The studio’s October 22, 2024 Update 38 announcement called it the final update; its current support FAQ describes October 2024 as the final content update month.

Update 38 also made previously gated or seasonal items permanently available, according to the announcement. That is a change to what is available in the game, not a promise about how long a platform will keep downloads, authentication, or online play running. The FAQ’s wording is specifically about content updates, so it should not be broadened into a claim that no later hotfixes occurred.
In a November 27, 2024 Steam announcement, Undead Labs described the game’s history as nearly 40 free updates across six years. That figure looks backward at past development; it does not indicate ongoing support or future service commitments.

A studio closure by itself would not prove that an installed, properly licensed single-player copy would immediately stop launching. The game has a single-player mode, and the studio’s current FAQ and the Xbox and Steam listings continued to describe access options on October 30, 2026. But the available information does not establish that every edition can always launch offline, that accounts and licenses will work forever, or that downloads will remain available after a hypothetical closure.
There are several separate things a player may mean by “keep working”: starting an installed copy, accessing its license, downloading or reinstalling it, receiving updates, and connecting to co-op. These are not interchangeable. A game can have no new content updates while remaining listed for purchase, and a player may have a working local installation even if a particular online service is unavailable. Conversely, continued store availability today cannot guarantee future authentication or service availability.

Undead Labs has not made a permanent-playability pledge. Whether Xbox will maintain authentication, downloads, licensing, or multiplayer after any future studio closure is unresolved. Treat any claim that the game is guaranteed to work forever—or that it would certainly stop working if the studio closed—as speculation.
Can you play State of Decay 2 offline?
The answer depends on platform and what you mean by offline. Steam lists single-player, but its requirements specify an internet connection for initial sign-in and a free Xbox Live account to play. That is not evidence of universal account-free, permanently offline access.

If you already have the game installed and licensed, single-player is the relevant mode when you do not want to join other players. However, the available platform information does not establish that every version can be installed, authenticated, or started without internet access. A past sign-in or an existing installation may matter, but there is no documented guarantee here that either bypasses future license or account checks.
Before relying on offline access, check the requirements for the specific platform and edition you own, and confirm that the game is installed and can launch under your current account. Will online co-op still work?
Co-op is more dependent on platform services than solo play. Undead Labs documents online sessions with up to three other players, cross-play, and Xbox account sign-in. Its support guidance also tells players to check Xbox service status, so peer-to-peer session connections do not mean co-op is independent of Xbox services.
Peer-to-peer describes how players connect for a game session; it does not remove the account and service requirements needed to sign in and use multiplayer. If Xbox services were unavailable, that could affect the account or multiplayer functions even if a player-hosted session does not rely on a conventional dedicated game server. The sources do not establish exactly how co-op would behave after a hypothetical future service change, so it would be wrong to promise that it would continue.

Which access option makes sense: purchase, Game Pass, or disc?
As of October 30, 2026, the US Xbox listing presents Game Pass and a purchase route; Steam lists a PC purchase; and Undead Labs documents an Xbox physical-disc edition. Those are current access routes, not commitments to indefinite availability. A subscription, a digital purchase, and a disc also do not create identical forms of access.

A physical disc can be a useful ownership-related option, but it is not a “forever playable” guarantee. Installing from a disc and obtaining updates are separate matters, and a disc cannot ensure that a future console will support it or that online services will remain available. If considering a particular used or new listing, confirm its console compatibility, region, edition, and condition with the seller; the existence of a disc edition alone does not settle those details.

First identify whether the problem is with installation, account sign-in, the platform, or multiplayer. A launch failure is not by itself evidence that Undead Labs has closed or that the game has been turned off.

- For co-op connection trouble: check Xbox service status, confirm Multiplayer is enabled in the game settings, and sign in to an Xbox account. On PC, check for Gaming Services updates as well.
- For a launch problem: use the troubleshooting path for your platform in Undead Labs’ support FAQ. Its PC and Xbox guidance are separate; do not assume a PC fix applies to a console installation.
- If you use a disc: follow the FAQ’s distinct disc-reinstallation steps rather than treating disc installation and digital installation as identical.
- If you use a digital license or subscription: check the account and access route associated with that copy. The current listings show available routes, but do not promise permanent authentication or subscription access.
Undead Labs says it is no longer accepting new bug reports directly and that its ticket intake and wishlist are closed. That means direct support intake has ended; it does not mean the game has been removed or that every launch issue has the same cause.
What is the safest conclusion for players?
Undead Labs is active and independent as of October 30, 2026, and State of Decay 2 remains listed through current platform routes. Its content updates ended in October 2024, but neither that milestone nor the studio’s separation from Xbox is a shutdown announcement. A hypothetical future closure would not automatically prove that an installed, licensed solo copy would stop working; the strongest uncertainty concerns future account authentication, downloads, licenses, and co-op services.
