For most newcomers, start with Silent Hill 2 (2024), the remake by Bloober Team. It retells the standalone 2001 story, is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and updates the original’s fixed-camera presentation for modern hardware. You do not need to play Silent Hill (1999) first. If you already know you want the series’ 1960s Japanese setting or a first-person horror game set in Scotland, Silent Hill f or Silent Hill: Townfall can also work as a starting point—but they are deliberate departures from the series’ familiar fogbound American town.

Why is the 2024 remake the best first game?

It gives newcomers a self-contained story, an accessible current-platform release, and a strong introduction to the series’ psychological-horror identity without requiring knowledge of earlier games. It is a remake of the 2001 Silent Hill 2, not a continuation of it: James Sunderland returns to a town tied to memories of his late wife, and the story follows his search there. That is enough context to begin; the plot does not depend on the events of the first game.

The remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera, updated aiming and dodging, and expanded areas and puzzles. Those changes make it feel more like a modern third-person horror game than the original’s fixed-camera, slower-paced presentation. IGN’s Blythe Dujardin called it a “faithful recreation” with quality-of-life improvements in a 26 September 2026 recommendation for modern-console newcomers. IGN reviewer Tristan Ogilvie rated it 8/10 in 2024.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

It is also a substantial game rather than a quick sample: the original’s main campaign takes around eight hours, while IGN’s 2024 remake playthrough lasted just over 15 hours. The remake has eight endings, compared with six in the original, but a first playthrough does not need to chase every ending. The longer runtime is a trade-off: the expanded exploration and puzzles give the remake room to develop, though IGN found some early puzzles overextended and was reluctant to replay the longer game simply to see additional endings.

The game received the Steam Awards 2024 Outstanding Visual Style Award. Steam showed 94% positive English-language reviews across 24,082 reviews, and 94% positive reviews among 740 reviews in the prior 30 days, as of 29 October 2026. Those figures describe Steam user reviews, not a guarantee that every newcomer will like its pacing or combat. For context, IGN reported in 2025 that the remake had sold two million copies; that announcement followed an earlier report of one million sold in less than a week after launch.

What kind of player may prefer another starting point?

  • If the setting that caught your attention is 1960s Japan, start with Silent Hill f.
  • If you want first-person horror on a Scottish island, start with Townfall.
  • If you want to understand the original Harry Mason and Heather story, begin with Silent Hill (1999), then play Silent Hill 3.
  • If you only want a free short introduction to a recent interpretation of the series, try The Short Message, but do not treat it as representative of the full-length games.

Do you need to play Silent Hill (1999) before Silent Hill 2?

No. Silent Hill 2 has a separate cast and a standalone plot; its number does not mean it continues the first game’s campaign. The games share the town, themes, and occasional references, but a newcomer can understand James’s story without knowing Harry Mason’s.

Push Square’s guide to the question puts it plainly: “The short and simple answer is no, you don’t need to play Silent Hill 1 first.” GameRant likewise describes the second game as having no direct mainline-story dependency beyond loose references. This is why starting with the remake does not leave a story gap that must be filled first.

The crucial exception is Silent Hill 3. It is a direct sequel to Silent Hill (1999), following Heather, and delivers story payoffs tied to that earlier game. If you plan to play both, play the 1999 original first. Reversing them risks spoiling the earlier story. There is no comparable prerequisite between Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 beyond sharing a franchise.

What order should you play the Silent Hill games in?

Choose an order based on whether you want an easy modern entry, the classic connected story, or a particular setting. The series does not have one official Konami-published master timeline, and chronological order is not the same thing as a good beginner order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Path 1: The easiest modern route

  1. Play Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake).
  2. Play Silent Hill f or Townfall in either order if you want more modern standalone entries.
  3. Optionally try The Short Message as a free PS5 side experience.
  4. Try Silent Hill 4: The Room if you want an older entry that is sold on GOG for PC.

This route gives you a modern point of entry before the newer games branch into very different settings and styles. Neither f nor Townfall requires the remake or another prior game.

Path 2: The classic Harry and Heather story

  1. Play Silent Hill (1999), the story of Harry Mason searching for his daughter in the town.
  2. Play Silent Hill 3, the direct sequel.
  3. Play Silent Hill 4: The Room afterward if you want a later Team Silent game with links to the earlier world.

Silent Hill: Origins is a prequel and can be added before the 1999 game if you are deliberately following the events in story order. For a first run, though, consider playing it after Silent Hill: a prequel can land differently once you know the destination it is leading toward, and Origins’ place in canon is debated. It is not a required installment.

Path 3: Start with the setting that brought you here

  • For 1960s Japan: Silent Hill f is a standalone story about Hinako in Ebisugaoka. Its placement early on some in-universe timelines reflects its 1960s setting; it is not an instruction to play it first. Its combat is more melee-forward than the remake’s, and its mature-content warning is unusually specific: the developer identifies depictions of gender discrimination, child abuse, bullying, drug-induced hallucinations, torture, and graphic violence. The developer also notes that the game’s portrayals of customs and culture reflect its period setting, not the opinions or values of the people involved in making it.
  • For first-person horror in Scotland: Townfall is set in 1996 on the fictional island of St. Amelia. It follows Simon Ordell and uses a handheld CRTV in place of the series’ familiar radio. Konami’s stated design direction, as relayed second-hand by Switchblade Gaming citing Wikipedia, describes Silent Hill as “a phenomenon, a state of mind” rather than simply a physical location. Treat that as a reported paraphrase, not a direct Konami transcript.

Path 4: Complete the Harry, Alessa, and Heather chain

  1. Silent Hill: Origins (2007), if you want to include the prequel.
  2. Silent Hill (1999).
  3. Silent Hill 3 (2003).
  4. Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004), for a later game with smaller connections to the series’ world.

This path is for players who specifically want the story links, not the easiest route to play on current hardware. Origins follows trucker Travis Grady; its “Good” ending leads into the original game, though its canon status is debated. The Room is not another direct chapter of the Harry-and-Heather plot: Henry Townshend’s story is mostly set in his Ashfield apartment, with links through references to Walter Sullivan and Joseph Schreiber.

Should you play the remake or the original Silent Hill 2?

For a first play, the remake is the practical choice for most people because it is sold for current platforms and retells the same story. The original is worth seeking out later if you are interested in its fixed-camera composition, 2001 pacing, or the differences between the two versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are separate products, not interchangeable editions. The 2024 remake changes the camera from fixed views to an over-the-shoulder perspective, expands maps, adds manual aiming and dodging, introduces enemy types, and lengthens puzzles. Its campaign is more than seven hours longer than the original’s approximate eight-hour main story in IGN’s review playthrough comparison.

Some players prefer the original’s design and atmosphere. The Punished Backlog, writing in October 2025, argued that the fan-made Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition is the best way to experience the 2001 PC game while also calling the remake “wonderful” and easier to access. Enhanced Edition is a fan project, not a separate official remake; it is relevant to people who already own the original PC release and want to revisit it, not a prerequisite for newcomers.

The original game’s access is now the bigger obstacle. As of October 2026, the original Silent Hill 2 was not listed among the straightforward current-generation digital options checked on Steam and GOG. Older copies, platforms, or collections may be possible, but are not the same purchase as the current remake. Do not buy an old release assuming it is simply the remake under another name.

Which Silent Hill games can you play on current hardware?

As of October 2026, the simplest current-platform options are the remake, Silent Hill f, Townfall, the free PS5 The Short Message, and Silent Hill 4: The Room on GOG for PC. This short list matters because the franchise has many more entries than the currently convenient catalog suggests.

Game Current option identified in October 2026 What to know
Silent Hill 2 remake PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Xbox Series release followed in November 2025; PS5, PC, and Xbox versions are current.
Silent Hill f PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Standalone game set in 1960s Japan.
Silent Hill: Townfall PS5, PC No Xbox version was identified as of October 2026; a later port is possible but unannounced.
The Short Message PS5, free A short standalone experience set in modern-day Germany.
Silent Hill 4: The Room PC on GOG DRM-free GOG release; the 2026 Preservation Program build is verified for Windows 11.

The US Steam list prices checked on 13 October 2026 were $69.99 for the remake, $69.99 for f, and $49.99 for Townfall; GOG listed The Room at $9.99. These are storefront list prices, not promises about sale pricing. GOG’s displayed HowLongToBeat estimates for The Room were 9 hours for the main story, 10 hours for main plus side content, and 12.5 hours for completionist play.

The games that are harder to access on modern systems include Silent Hill (1999), the original Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Origins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour, and Book of Memories. Depending on the title, the remaining routes may mean used discs or older platforms such as PS3, PSP, or Vita. A live PS3-store listing and price for the 1999 original were not confirmed in the October 2026 catalog check, and Sony announced a gradual PS3 and Vita store closure with full closure scheduled for July 2027. Availability can therefore be an issue even before questions of image quality or hardware condition.

Is the HD Collection a good way to play the classics?

Silent Hill HD Collection contains Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, but it is widely criticized as a poor remaster, with reported issues involving frame rate, fog, and audio; a planned Xbox 360 patch was canceled. Loaded describes Xbox backward compatibility as the least-bad official current-hardware route to Silent Hill 3, while still warning that the remaster is unloved. Treat the collection as a fallback when access matters more than presentation, not as the preferred-quality version.

What about the other older games?

  • Shattered Memories reimagines the first game in an alternate universe; it does not replace the 1999 original. Its therapy sessions, chase sequences, and lack of traditional combat make it an unusual side trip, with Wii, PS2, and PSP releases rather than a simple current-console version.
  • Homecoming is a standalone, combat-heavy, divisive entry. It is not required to understand the principal story chain.
  • Downpour is a standalone, more open-town entry and the last mainline release before the hiatus. It was removed from the Microsoft Store, according to Hardcore Gaming 101 as cited by Switchblade Gaming.
  • Book of Memories is a Vita dungeon crawler rather than a typical survival-horror introduction.
  • P.T. was a playable teaser for the canceled Silent Hills, not a step in the game order. It was pulled from the PlayStation Store and cannot be re-downloaded, according to IGN.

Can a PC run the Silent Hill 2 remake?

Steam and Konami list a minimum PC requirement of Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1070 Ti-, RX 5700-, or Arc A750-class graphics card, and 50 GB of storage. These are minimum specifications, not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual setting; the available data does not establish a single performance result across PC configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check available storage and the exact graphics card model before buying. A GPU that sounds similar by name is not necessarily the same tier, and a PC below the listed minimum may not provide the intended experience. The specification applies to the remake, not automatically to the older PC releases or the other games in the series.

How many Silent Hill games are there?

There is no single count because sources include different kinds of releases. IGN described approximately 18 games by September 2026, including mobile titles, while Switchblade Gaming counted 13 standalone games and excluded collections, arcade and mobile releases, Japan-only spin-offs, and the delisted P.T. teaser. Both counts can be accurate under their chosen rules.

For a newcomer, the useful takeaway is that there are roughly a dozen-plus standalone games, but only a handful are straightforward to buy and play on current hardware. The original four games were made by Team Silent between 1999 and 2004; later entries came from different Japanese and North American studios. A franchise timeline can help with background, but does not create prerequisites where a game’s story is standalone.

Does chronological order tell you where to start?

No. Silent Hill f appears early on some timelines because it takes place in 1960s Japan, not because it introduces the classic storyline. The chronology of Silent Hill 2 has also been described differently: Masahiro Ito has mentioned a late-1970s setting, while later documents place it about a decade after the original; IGN uses a 1990s slot. There is no need to settle that dating question to play it first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most dependable sequence rule is about story dependence: play Silent Hill (1999) before Silent Hill 3. For almost every other decision, prioritize the story, setting, and platform you actually want rather than trying to arrange every release by its fictional date.

How we picked the starting point

The recommendation favors a game that is available on current hardware, understandable without franchise homework, and representative enough to give newcomers a useful first impression. The remake fits those criteria for most players: it is a modern, purchasable retelling of a standalone story. The alternatives remain valid where a reader’s preference is specific—the 1960s Japanese setting of f, the first-person approach of Townfall, a free short PS5 experience, or the classic Harry-and-Heather sequence.

It does not rank every game by review score or imply that newer means better. A dated release can be the right choice for a player who values its particular style, while a current release can be a poor match for someone who wants fixed-camera classic horror or a connected sequel story.

What should you play next after the first game?

After the remake, continue with f or Townfall if you are curious about the series’ newer interpretations. If the original town’s history and classic Team Silent design are what hooked you, find Silent Hill (1999) before moving to Silent Hill 3. Add The Room afterward if you want another Team Silent-era story, and leave the less accessible or more divisive entries for when a particular premise appeals to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the announced Silent Hill 1 remake available to play yet?

No release date had been announced by Konami or Bloober Team as of September 2026. The 2025 announcement is not a playable alternative to the 1999 game, so do not plan a current playthrough around an unconfirmed release window.

Can I play the Silent Hill games on a handheld PC?

The Windows PC versions may be playable on handheld PCs, but the available data does not establish device-specific compatibility or performance. Check the storefront’s current compatibility details for your exact device rather than assuming the PC minimum specifications guarantee a smooth handheld experience.

Are the Silent Hill movies in the same order as the games?

No. The films and television adaptations use separate timelines, so watching them is not needed to understand game continuity. Treat adaptations as their own versions of the setting rather than chapters between games.

Does Silent Hill 2 have one canon ending I need to see?

The series does not require one ending from the original game as the official bridge to a sequel. You can finish the remake without looking up ending explanations or replaying for completion.
