Start Chaos the Right Way: Best 40k Combat Patrols and AoS Spearheads for Beginners

The best Chaos starter set for most new Warhammer players is a single-faction Combat Patrol for Warhammer 40,000 or a Spearhead for Age of Sigmar—not one of the boxed starter sets. The 2026 40k starters pair Space Marines with Orks, while the AoS starters pair Stormcast Eternals with Kruleboyz; none starts a Chaos army. For 40k, Death Guard is the most forgiving first force, World Eaters are the simplest to understand, and Chaos Space Marines are the flexible undivided choice. For AoS, start with Slaves to Darkness or Maggotkin of Nurgle.

Choose the game and playstyle first, then buy the matching faction box. Combat Patrol and Spearhead boxes are army-focused kits, not complete hobby kits: budget for tools, glue, primer and paint as well.

Is there a Chaos starter box?

There is no general boxed starter set in the current 40k or Age of Sigmar starter ranges that includes a Chaos faction. The practical Chaos on-ramp is a faction-specific Combat Patrol in 40k or Spearhead in AoS. These formats give you a coherent force and a way to learn with it, without buying miniatures for an opposing faction you do not want.

The distinction matters because “starter set” can mean two different things: a two-player introduction to a game, or a first box for someone who has already chosen an army. The current 40k Starter Set is a two-player box with 46 Space Marine and Ork miniatures, listed at $255 in NerdSnack’s October 2026 comparison. Its smaller siblings and the Getting Started boxes also use Space Marines and/or Orks. In AoS, Warrior, Harbinger and Extremis pair Stormcast Eternals with Kruleboyz. They may teach rules and hobby basics, but they do not build a Chaos collection.

If you specifically want Chaos, do not buy those boxes expecting their contents to convert into a Chaos army. Go directly to a Combat Patrol or Spearhead. A limited Battleforce can be a useful larger purchase once you have chosen a faction, but it is not the safest substitute for a first, manageable army box.

Which Chaos army should I start with?

Pick the game first, then choose the kind of game and painting project you want. In 40k, Death Guard suits a durable, mixed force; World Eaters are built around an uncomplicated melee plan; and Chaos Space Marines are the broad, undivided option. In AoS, Slaves to Darkness are the classic flexible start, while Maggotkin of Nurgle are tough and forgiving but bring a larger painting project in their Battleforce.

If you want… Consider What the choice means
Durability and a forgiving first army Death Guard (40k) or Maggotkin of Nurgle (AoS) Both lean into attrition and resilience. Nurgle’s weathered, textured look can also make rough early brushwork less conspicuous.
A clear charge-and-fight plan World Eaters (40k) or Blades of Khorne (AoS) Aggressive melee is the defining identity. World Eaters are straightforward, but their focus can be limiting if you want a varied tactical style.
Flexible, armoured Chaos Chaos Space Marines (40k) or Slaves to Darkness (AoS) These are the broad starting points if you want a force not defined entirely by one god or one gimmick.
Magic-first play Thousand Sons (40k) or Disciples of Tzeentch (AoS) Choose these for sorcery and a more rules-dense identity, rather than the simplest first learning curve.
A force whose daemon models can cross games Chaos Daemons (40k), or a daemon-heavy Battleforce Several daemon kits have rules in both systems, but do not treat Daemons as the most secure long-term 40k-only choice.

Warhammer Guild describes Slaves to Darkness as an ideal AoS entry point because of their clear rules, flexible Chaos marks, moderate model count and dark armour scheme. The same guide calls Maggotkin beginner-friendly because their durability can forgive tactical mistakes. Its faction overview also rates Blades of Khorne beginner-friendly, Hedonites of Slaanesh moderate, and Disciples of Tzeentch and Skaven moderate to hard. Tournament results are a snapshot, not a reliable reason to choose a first army; pick the models and playstyle you will want to build and paint.

What is the best Combat Patrol for Chaos?

For most new 40k players, choose Death Guard. It combines resilient infantry with a Rhino transport and useful elite models, while avoiding an overwhelming horde. Choose World Eaters instead if you want the clearest melee identity, and Chaos Space Marines if your priority is an undivided Chaos Marine collection.

1. Death Guard: best first Chaos Combat Patrol for most beginners

The 2025 Combat Patrol contains 13 models: a Lord of Virulence, a Tallyman, 3 Deathshroud Terminators, 7 Plague Marines and a Death Guard Rhino. Spikey Bits estimates it at about 450 points in matched play and reports kit value of $259.50 against the old $170 comparison price, a $89.50 saving. The current US list price is higher, so that older savings figure is a kit-MSRP comparison, not the discount you should expect at checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Rhino gives the force a way to move Plague Marines rather than requiring every unit to trudge up the board. The box also has a useful mix of ordinary infantry, elite Terminators and characters. It is a more appealing first painting project than the earlier Death Guard patrol, which had 30 Poxwalkers and Typhus. Wargamer’s Tim Linward called that retired box “a slow moving morass of chaff infantry” and said it was “all broccoli and no dessert” as a building and painting project. Those comments refer to the old box, not the current one.

Nurgle’s corroded, weathered aesthetic is another practical advantage for a learner. Costumary and Warhammer Guild both note that textured, messy effects can make early painting imperfections less obvious; Costumary describes stippled rust and a sepia wash as one approach. This is a visual style preference, not a requirement: you can paint the models in any scheme you like.

Best for: a first 40k force that can take a hit, has varied unit roles and does not overwhelm you with a large model count. The October 29, 2026 Amazon snapshot listed it at $146.78, but availability and price can change.

2. World Eaters: best Combat Patrol for simple gameplay

The 2025 World Eaters patrol contains 22 models: a Daemon Prince, 10 Khorne Berzerkers, 10 Jakhals and a Master of Executions. Spikey Bits estimates about 550 matched-play points and reports $253 in kit MSRP, or $83 more than the old $170 comparison price. The 22-model count is higher than Death Guard’s, so “simple to play” does not mean “less to build and paint.”

The plan is easy to grasp: advance, get into melee and hit hard. Wargamer’s Tim Linward describes the army as one whose goal is “to move forward into melee combat and chop their opponents into little bits.” That clarity is a strength when learning the game, but it also means this is a narrower choice than a flexible combined-arms force. The Daemon Prince is a substantial centrepiece model, and the Berzerkers and Jakhals give you a larger painting workload than the Death Guard patrol.

Spikey Bits suggests Rhinos and anti-tank options as next purchases. That is a useful expansion direction, not a reason to assume the patrol already solves every matchup. The October 29 Amazon snapshot listed the box at $137.41. Compare the current contents and local price before buying; the price snapshot is not a promise of stock.

Best for: someone who wants an aggressive army with an easy-to-explain game plan and enjoys building a larger number of infantry models.

3. Chaos Space Marines: best generic “I want Chaos Marines” box

The Chaos Space Marines Combat Patrol includes 10 Legionaries, 5 Possessed, 10 Chaos Cultists and a Master of Possession. That is 26 models by the contents list, although Spikey Bits’ ranking table gives the box as 27; use the named contents rather than relying on the inconsistent total. Its units give you a mix of power-armoured troops, mutated elites and cultists, and it does not lock you into one Chaos god.

The trade-off is value. Spikey Bits lists $226 in kit MSRP and $56 savings against the old $170 comparison price, and calls it a modest-value box. That arithmetic is not a performance rating and uses the previous comparison price. The patrol is still a reasonable pick if the faction itself is what you want: buying a box with better kit arithmetic is not a bargain if you do not want to collect its army.

For later purchases, Spikey Bits suggests Chosen, tanks and characters, or Accursed Cultists with a Dark Commune if you want to build around cultists. Its October 28 Amazon snapshot listed the Combat Patrol at $134.65. Local stock and prices vary.

Best for: a player who wants the broad Chaos Space Marines identity, rather than Death Guard, World Eaters or another god-specific army.

4. Chaos Daemons: best numbers-only value, with an availability caveat

The 2022 Chaos Daemons Combat Patrol is a Khorne-heavy box: 20 Bloodletters, 9 Flesh Hounds, 3 Bloodcrushers and a Bloodmaster. Spikey Bits’ dedicated review calculates $297 in kit MSRP and $129 savings against its old $170 box comparison; its ranking table gives $127, so the two published figures differ slightly. Either way, it is a strong kit-value calculation, not proof that this is the best first army for every new player.

Availability is uncertain. Some 2025 coverage said the box had been removed, while Spikey Bits still listed and reviewed it in 2026 with an out-of-print, limited-availability warning. Treat it as a retailer-find if you see one; do not assume it is in stock at the Games Workshop webstore. It is also focused on Khorne, so it is not a broad sample of every daemon god.

There is a useful cross-game angle: Warhammer Guild says Bloodletters, Plaguebearers, Horrors, Daemonettes and the four greater daemons have both 40k and AoS rules. That can make daemon kits attractive to a household that plays both games. However, Chaos Daemons have an uncertain position as a 40k-only long-term investment, so choose the box for its models and your gaming plans rather than its value number alone.

Death Guard or World Eaters for new players?

Choose Death Guard if you want a more forgiving, durable force with a transport and a varied 13-model project. Choose World Eaters if you want a more direct melee plan and are happy with 22 models and a larger infantry painting workload. Both are valid first armies; the better choice depends on whether you prefer resilience and variety or an aggressive, focused identity.

Neither points estimate should be mistaken for a guarantee of current competitive strength: the cited estimates are about 450 points for Death Guard and about 550 for World Eaters, and points can change with rules updates. A Combat Patrol is also a defined game format, so do not judge its value only by how close its contents get to a particular points target. If your main goal is a playable first game, start with the patrol rules and the units in the box, then expand after you know what roles you enjoy.

What about other 40k Chaos Combat Patrols?

There are other god-specific patrols, including Thousand Sons, Emperor’s Children, Night Lords and Red Corsairs. The available published comparison ranks them by kit-MSRP savings against the former $170 price, but full current unit lists were not available for every box. Avoid buying on a model count or a guessed contents list when the faction’s actual models and rules are the reason you are choosing it.

Combat Patrol Models in published comparison Kit-MSRP savings versus $170 comparison price
Death Guard (2025) 13 $89.50
World Eaters (2025) 22 $83
Thousand Sons (2025) 15 $83
Night Lords (2026) 17 $67.50
Emperor’s Children (2025) 17 $63
Red Corsairs (2026) 17 $62.50
Chaos Space Marines (2024) 27 in ranking table $56

These are the ranking source’s figures, calculated at the old $170 comparison price; the Chaos Space Marines contents list totals 26, rather than the 27 listed in the table. Kit-MSRP savings do not account for a particular retailer’s sale price or tell you which army you will enjoy.

Spikey Bits also reported 2026 reveals for Aeldari Corsairs, Red Corsairs, Kroot and Night Lords patrols, with an Iron Warriors patrol following in March. Its cited Iron Warriors contents are a Warpsmith, 10 Legionaries, 5 Chaos Terminators and 5 Havocs. If you are choosing among newer specialist forces, check that a current box is actually available and that its included models fit the way you want to collect; do not infer contents from faction name alone.

Are Combat Patrol boxes still supported in 11th edition?

Yes. Spikey Bits reported in October 2026 that Games Workshop confirmed Combat Patrol is staying in 11th edition, with a 184-page Combat Patrol Companion and free Combat Patrol rules in the 40k app. That makes a Combat Patrol a supported way to start playing rather than merely a leftover bundle from an earlier edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combat Patrol is a game format as well as a product label. The box’s value to a beginner is that it gives you a force with an intended way to play in that format; it does not promise that every included miniature will be the optimal purchase for every larger army list. Before assembling, check the current rules and the options included in your specific kit so you can make informed choices about weapon builds.

Should you buy a 40k Chaos Battleforce instead?

Buy a Battleforce when you already know the faction and want a larger expansion, not as a blind first purchase. The spring 2026 Chaos Battleforces were limited boxes; their kit-equivalent values are substantial, but the best match depends on overlap with a Combat Patrol and whether you want daemons, elites, vehicles or a particular god’s units.

Battleforce Published contents highlights Kit-equivalent value Expansion fit
Emperor’s Children: Lords of Excess 12 Noise Marines, 20 Infractors/Tormentors and a Daemon Prince $367 / £227.50 A strong starting core or partner to the Combat Patrol; little leader duplication reported
World Eaters: Khorne Daemonkin 10 Berzerkers, Master of Executions, Lord on Juggernaut, 20 Bloodletters and 6 Bloodcrushers $370 / £224.50 Daemon-heavy, intended for the Khorne Daemonkin Detachment; overlap with patrol if you already own Berzerkers and the Master
Thousand Sons: Sekhmet Coven Infernal Master, 3 Exalted Sorcerers, 10 Scarab Occult Terminators and Mutalith Vortex Beast $334.50 / £205 Lowest kit value of these four, but reported to have little overlap with the Combat Patrol
Death Guard: Vile Vectorium Lord of Contagion/Lord Felthius and Blightlord Terminators, 3 Foetid Bloat-drones, 3 Deathshroud and 20 Poxwalkers $371 / £233.50 Highest kit value; alongside the Combat Patrol, gives you six Deathshroud

Values and box details reported by Wargamer in 2026; they are kit-equivalent arithmetic, not a promise that the limited boxes remain available at a particular price. Saga Concepts listed the World Eaters Battleforce at $212.50 and the Chaos Space Marines Battleforce: Warband at $225.25 on October 27, with limited stock reported for the former.

Wargamer noted Christmas 2025 40k Battleforces retailed for $250 / £155 and expected a similar price for the early-2026 releases, but the cited reporting says Games Workshop had not published the prices when the boxes were revealed. Do not present $250 / £155 as a confirmed 2026 RRP. A Battleforce can be a good next buy if the contents match your army; it can also leave a new player with a large, expensive pile of unbuilt miniatures and no basic tools or paint.

Which Chaos Spearhead should an AoS beginner choose?

For a classic armoured Chaos force, choose the Slaves to Darkness Bloodwind Legion Spearhead. It contains a Chaos Lord, a Chaos Chariot, two units of 5 Chaos Warriors and 5 Chaos Knights. Choose Maggotkin’s Bubonic Cell if you prefer Nurgle’s attrition style, a Rotbringer Sorcerer, Rotmire Creed, Nurglings and a Beast of Nurgle.

Spearhead is Age of Sigmar’s ready-roster format, played on a 30-by-22.4-inch board; Warhammer Guild describes games as roughly 30–45 minutes. The format gives a new player a bounded way to learn with a coherent force. It is not a promise that one box is a full collection for every AoS game mode.

Slaves to Darkness: the classic Chaos starting point

Bloodwind Legion has 17 models by its listed contents: a Chaos Lord, a chariot, 10 Chaos Warriors and 5 Chaos Knights. The infantry and cavalry create a recognizably armoured force, while the chariot adds a different unit type. Warhammer Guild calls Slaves to Darkness the ideal starting point for new Chaos players in AoS, and TistaMinis calls the Spearhead the purest classic Chaos-fantasy army. Dark armour with coloured trim also offers a clear painting scheme without requiring a bright, clean finish.

The army’s flexibility is useful if you later want to explore a god-specific direction. That makes this a sensible first box for someone who likes the Chaos aesthetic but has not settled on a more specialized faction. Use it as a starting force, not a guarantee that every model or mark will suit every future list.

Maggotkin of Nurgle: durable, but plan for the painting

The Bubonic Cell Spearhead was announced for preorder in January 2026. Its reported contents are a Rotbringer Sorcerer, Rotmire Creed, 6 Nurgling bases and a Beast of Nurgle. Loaded Dice listed it in October at £83.99 against a £95 RRP, with backorder timing reported as two to four weeks at the time of its scrape. Availability can change.

Maggotkin is a good alternative if you like slow attrition and an army that can forgive mistakes. The models also suit textured painting techniques, but Nurgle is not automatically an easier project: the surfaces, details and effects may invite more painting experimentation. If you want a larger army-in-a-box, consider the limited Plaguesworn Host Battleforce below—but its 40-plus models are a substantial project.

Is the 2026 Maggotkin starter set worth waiting for?

The Christmas 2026 Maggotkin of Nurgle Battleforce, Plaguesworn Host, is the most complete AoS Chaos army-in-a-box described in the current research, but its price and preorder date are not confirmed. It contains a Harbinger of Decay, Lord of Blights, 3 Sloven Knights, 5 Putrid Blightkings, 10 Rotswords, 14 Pox-Wretches and 6 Mire Kelpies—more than 40 models across seven units.

Wargamer reported $364 / £226 in kit value and 910 points. Loaded Dice picked it as the beginner option among the six revealed 2026 AoS Battleforces because it combines two heroes, elite infantry, a horde and cavalry. That variety provides a broader core than a small Spearhead, but more than 40 models mean a lot of assembly and painting before the collection feels finished. If you are unsure whether you enjoy building and painting, start with the smaller Spearhead instead of assuming a large box is automatically better value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The other Chaos AoS Battleforce is Slaves to Darkness: Legion of Damnation. It includes a Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, 5 Chaos Chosen, 3 Varanguard, 5 Chaos Knights and 10 Chaos Warriors. Wargamer gives it $403.50 / £247 of kit value and 1,090 points, the highest reported kit value among the six boxes. Loaded Dice describes it as an elite starter for someone who prefers large, spiky knights to hordes. If the two boxes share one price, that value calculation makes Slaves to Darkness look especially strong—but Games Workshop had not confirmed an RRP or preorder date as of October 26–29, 2026.

Last year’s AoS Battleforces were reported at about $265 / £165. Wargamer and Woehammer discuss that as an estimate for the 2026 boxes, not an announced price; Woehammer estimated £165 after the September rise. Treat it as a planning estimate only. If you are willing to wait, watch for an official price and preorder date, then compare the bundle with the units you actually want rather than buying solely on the advertised kit value.

How much does a first Chaos army really cost?

The box price is only the start if you are new to the hobby. Costumary’s 2026 estimate puts a playable 1,000-point starter army at $250–400 at retail or $180–300 from discount retailers, and adds $80–120 for paints, brushes, tools and primer when starting from zero. Its estimated total for an initial army plus supplies is $350–550—not just the $177 printed on a Combat Patrol box.

Combat Patrol list prices rose on September 21, 2026, to $177 US / £109 UK / €139 EU, according to Spikey Bits. Independent US retailers often discount the list price: NerdSnack reports about 15% below list, while Warhammer Guild and Costumary describe roughly 15–20%. Saga Concepts listed Chaos Combat Patrols at $150.45 on October 27. Amazon snapshots from October 28–29 showed different prices for three specific boxes. These are dated examples, not a guarantee; compare the total at checkout, including shipping and local tax.

For AoS, Loaded Dice listed the Maggotkin Spearhead at £83.99 versus a £95 RRP in October. A retail discount can help, but the rules and models you actually want should lead the decision. A second-hand assembled or primed army may cost 30–50% below retail according to Costumary and Warhammer Guild; inspect what is included and how it has been assembled or painted before treating the discount as a saving.

What else do you need to build and paint the box?

  • Plastic glue: multipart plastic Chaos kits generally require assembly with glue. Warhammer Guild’s AoS estimates are £5–7 / $7–10.
  • Clippers: useful for removing parts from sprues; the cited beginner range is £6–12 / $8–16.
  • Primer: models need an appropriate primer before painting. The cited Citadel spray range is £14–18 / $18–22; Warhammer Guild notes hardware-store primer can cost about a third as much.
  • Paints and brushes: Warhammer Guild estimates beginner paints at £20–30 / $25–40. Costumary’s broader $80–120 from-zero budget also includes brushes and tools.
  • Rules and reference: a Combat Patrol Companion was listed at $29.75 by Saga Concepts on October 27. The 40k Combat Patrol rules are reported free in the 40k app.

These Chaos Combat Patrols are unpainted multipart plastic kits; do not assume they include paints or behave like push-fit models in an introductory set. Buy a modest set of basic supplies first, then add specialty paints and tools as your chosen scheme demands. The simplest way to keep the hobby cost under control is to choose one box, assemble and paint it, and decide on the next units after you know what you enjoy.

Where should you buy a Chaos starter box?

Check Games Workshop’s webstore for official list pricing, then compare reputable independent hobby retailers and local game stores. US discount retailers commonly price below list according to the sources above, and some Amazon listings had lower dated snapshots for the Chaos Space Marines, Death Guard and World Eaters patrols. Because stock and sale prices move, confirm the exact box name, edition and contents before checkout.

Limited Battleforces are less predictable than evergreen Combat Patrols and Spearheads. The 2026 AoS Christmas boxes had been revealed, but preorder dates and prices were still unannounced in the late-October reporting. Do not budget around a rumored date or estimated RRP until an official listing appears. For an out-of-print or second-hand Daemons patrol, make sure the seller is offering the complete box and account for missing parts, assembled models and shipping.

How we picked these starter boxes

The recommendations prioritize boxes that actually begin a Chaos army, then distinguish the best match by game system, playstyle, model count, painting workload and expansion path. We favor evergreen Combat Patrols and Spearheads as the lower-commitment route, while treating Battleforces as larger, limited follow-ups for players who already know what they want. Published kit-MSRP arithmetic is included as one value signal, not as measured tabletop performance; no official Games Workshop ranking or beginner survey establishes a single universally best box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Bloodletters in both Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar?

Yes. Warhammer Guild lists Bloodletters among daemon kits with both 40k datasheets and AoS warscrolls; it also names Plaguebearers, Horrors, Daemonettes and the four greater daemons. Check the current rules for the system you plan to play, since shared model use does not mean the two games use identical rules.

Do I need a codex or battletome to start playing Combat Patrol or Spearhead?

The cited 2026 reporting says Combat Patrol rules are free in the 40k app, and Spearhead is a ready-roster format with its own fixed force structure. The available data does not establish the current publication requirements for every faction’s broader army rules, so check the official rules listing for your chosen game before buying a book.

Is it cheaper to buy an assembled Chaos army second-hand?

It can be: Costumary and Warhammer Guild describe second-hand lots at roughly 30–50% below retail. The discount depends on completeness and condition, so ask for a contents list and clear photos, and factor in any missing parts or extra work before comparing it with a new box.

Can I start with the 2026 Christmas Battleforces without owning a Combat Patrol?

You can collect an army from a Battleforce, but these are large, limited boxes rather than beginner-focused hobby kits. A smaller Spearhead or Combat Patrol is usually the more manageable first project; a Battleforce makes more sense if you already like the faction and are ready for its model count.
