If Stardew Valley says “Connection Failed,” check the game version, host setup, available cabins, and invitation method before changing router settings. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the same failure can come from mismatched game versions, a save that was not opened as a co-op farm, an unavailable invitation option, or a network restriction.
Work through those checks in order, using the steps for your platform. Don’t delete your save or open broad router access as a first fix. The official multiplayer troubleshooting guide and multiplayer documentation describe the game’s requirements, but they cannot identify a live outage or diagnose a particular home network.

What should I check first when Stardew Valley co-op won’t connect?
Start by confirming that everyone has the same game version and that the host actually started the farm from the co-op menu. Then check that the host has a cabin for each joining player and that everyone is using a connection method supported by their platform. Only after these basics match should you investigate firewalls, NAT, or router settings.
- Compare versions. On every player’s title screen, select the ? button and compare the displayed version. The developer’s troubleshooting guide says all players must be on the same version to play together. Update any mismatched copy before changing network settings; don’t assume a number from an older guide is the current release.
- Confirm how the host opened the farm. The host should choose Co-op > Host and select the farm there. Opening the same save through the ordinary Load route is not the same as hosting it for multiplayer. Check the host’s server setting as well; where an online option is available, select the mode that matches the intended connection.
- Check the cabins. The farm needs an unclaimed cabin for every joining player. The official guide gives the example of one cabin for two total players, two for three, and three for four. Treat that as an example rather than a universal player-limit rule: platform limits and game editions can differ, so check the current rules for your platform.
- Make sure the host is present. A farmhand cannot enter a farm when its host is absent. The host must launch the co-op session for others to join.
- Use an invitation method that fits the platform. Desktop Steam and GOG play use their associated clients for friend invitations and invite codes. Consoles do not necessarily show those desktop controls. If the expected control is absent, first verify the platform and client requirements rather than changing the router.
These checks catch setup errors that can look like a network failure. If everything matches and the game still hangs or reports a failed connection, continue with the platform-specific steps below.

Why can’t my friend join my farm on PC?
On desktop, check the storefront client, the invitation, and whether the host’s farm is visible to friends. For two computers on the same local network, the developer also documents joining through the host computer’s local IP address, but that is a separate route from joining over the internet.
Check Steam or GOG access and the invite controls
For a Steam or GOG invitation, both players should have the relevant client open and be signed in. The host can use the friend invitation or provide a current invite code from the co-op options. If Invite Friend, Show Invite Code, or Enter Invite Code is missing, check client access and sign-in first. Those controls are not a general requirement for every platform.

Invite codes change when the game is reloaded, so ask the host to share the code from the current session rather than reusing an old one. A friends-only farm may also fail to appear if Steam privacy settings prevent the host’s game from being visible. Check those settings if the friend invitation is not showing the farm.
Try local-network joining only when both PCs are on the same network
If the players are physically on the same home or local network, the developer’s guidance describes joining with the host computer’s local IP when IP connections are enabled. This is not the host’s public internet-facing IP address. A local-IP connection can be a useful alternative when farm discovery or friend invitations are the problem, but it does not guarantee that a firewall or other network restriction will allow the connection.

Check firewall and security software carefully
A desktop firewall or antivirus network rule can block the game or its client. If you investigate this, look for a narrowly scoped permission for the game and relevant client rather than disabling protection broadly. Restore normal protections after any temporary diagnostic change. If other players can connect but one PC cannot, compare that player’s client sign-in and security rules before changing shared router settings.
What should console players check?
For console co-op, confirm that the players are using a supported same-platform setup, the host has started the farm correctly, and each joining player has a cabin. Then check the console’s internet connection and NAT status. Don’t look for a Steam/GOG invite-code interface on a console.
Run the console’s built-in internet or NAT test and note the result. Nintendo Switch’s connection test reports a NAT type from A through F; a restrictive result can point to a network issue, but the result alone does not identify the exact cause. Also confirm that the players meet any online-service requirements for remote play. Local communication and playing with someone over the internet are not the same connection scenario.
On Switch, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if a suitable dock and network connection are available. The Switch OLED dock has a built-in LAN port, so it does not need an extra USB LAN adapter. The original Switch dock may need an adapter for a wired connection; Switch Lite has a different licensed-accessory arrangement. A wired connection may help isolate Wi-Fi problems, but it will not fix mismatched versions, missing cabins, or a host who did not start co-op.

On PlayStation and Xbox, use the console’s own network test and confirm that the players are on a supported same-platform setup. Check the relevant online-service eligibility for remote multiplayer, along with the farm’s host settings and cabin availability. Do not assume that console multiplayer uses the same invite-code steps documented for desktop Steam or GOG.
Does Stardew Valley support cross-platform multiplayer?
Standard multiplayer does not support joining a PC farm from a console or joining across different console families. PC versions can play together when the version and connection requirements match. If the players are on different kinds of devices, confirm compatibility before troubleshooting the network: an unsupported platform pairing will not be fixed by changing NAT or forwarding a port.

How do you troubleshoot experimental Android or iOS co-op?
Use the developer’s mobile guide for the current steps to access the experimental feature, and expect to connect by IP instead of relying on normal farm discovery. Back up an important save before trying experimental multiplayer, and first confirm that the host and guest are using a supported setup.

For a local Wi-Fi session with a PC host, use the host computer’s local IP address as described in the guide. A public IP is not interchangeable with a local address, and this method is intended for the relevant local-network setup. The developer notes one iOS-specific wrinkle: after granting local-network permission, the first join attempt may fail, while a retry can succeed. If it does, retry once after allowing the permission rather than assuming the save is damaged.

Investigate network restrictions only after checking versions, host mode, cabins, invitations, and platform compatibility. On consoles, start with the built-in connection test; on desktop, review narrowly scoped game and client firewall permissions. Router changes are a later step because they can expose services or devices beyond the game.

The developer lists PC TCP/UDP port 24642 in its troubleshooting guidance. That is a specific troubleshooting setting, not proof that every connection failure is caused by a closed port, and it is not an instruction to open broad ranges or place a console in a DMZ. If you consider port forwarding, understand how your router applies the rule and limit it to the documented setting and intended device. Avoid putting a console in a DMZ as a routine fix; consult the router or platform documentation if you do not understand the security effect.
Restart the game and the relevant client on both sides, then restart the devices if needed. If you power-cycle network equipment, allow it to reconnect fully before retrying. Change one thing at a time and test again, so you can identify whether a change mattered and restore it if it did not. No single network adjustment is a universal fix.

What if the connection still fails?
If the setup and connection method appear correct, verify the game files for all players using the available integrity-check option in each platform’s client. This is a reasonable next check when a game installation may be incomplete or inconsistent; it does not erase the need to compare versions and setup first.
For a modded game, compare the installed mods and, if there is a version mismatch, the protocol versions recorded in the players’ logs. Modded and unmodded setups can introduce additional compatibility variables, so use the official troubleshooting documentation and the relevant mod information rather than treating a network change as the answer.

Will uninstalling Stardew Valley delete my farm?

Can I play Stardew Valley co-op if one player is using mods?
