Star Trek First Printing or Reprint: How to Choose the Right Copy

If you want to read a Star Trek story, a clean, affordable reprint is usually the practical choice. If you collect a particular title, imprint, cover, or publication period, an original printing may justify a premium—but only when the printing is verified and the copy’s condition and collector demand support the price. “First printing” is a collecting detail, not a guarantee of rarity or value.

What is the difference between a first edition and a first printing?

A first edition is the first commercial edition of a work; a printing is one press run within that edition. A book can have multiple printings within the same edition, so a later printing may still belong to the first edition without being the first printing. The distinction and the relevant identification clues vary by publisher and title; Page & Provenance’s first-edition guide explains why publisher-specific conventions matter.

A reprint is not necessarily a revised edition. A simple later printing may preserve the edition’s text and design, while a revised edition may change the text, add material, or use a different format or cover. Check the exact title’s publication history before describing a copy as one or the other.

In practice, the phrases in a listing can be imprecise. “First edition” may describe the first commercial version of the work but leave unanswered whether the copy comes from the first press run. “First printing” is a more specific claim about that run. Ask what the seller means and request the copyright page or other identifying evidence; do not assume that a broad label answers both questions.

There can also be a difference between a new printing and a new edition. A later press run may retain the same text and design, while a revised edition might add material, change text, or appear in another format. A new cover by itself is not enough information to determine the publication relationship. Use the exact copy’s details and publication history, rather than age or appearance alone, to describe it accurately.

Why does the distinction matter for Star Trek books?

Star Trek publishing has involved different publishers and imprints, formats, markets, and cover states. StarTrek.com’s account of Simon & Schuster’s publishing history says that after Bantam’s license period, Simon & Schuster used Wallaby Books, Wanderer Books, and Pocket Books for a new publishing program around the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture; the account describes sixteen titles planned for that launch period. That history is one reason “an old Star Trek book” is too broad a description for identifying a particular copy.

The same title can appear in more than one format, market, imprint, cover, or printing. Pocket Books copies in particular should not automatically be treated as first editions of the underlying work: Pocket Books identification guidance notes that many are reprints. Identify the exact book before judging its printing or comparing its value.

That variety makes accurate identification especially useful when shopping for a particular installment or collecting a line. A listing that gives only a series name and a publication year may describe the story but not the physical copy you are considering. Record the author, series or numbered volume, publisher and imprint, format, market, and ISBN before comparing listings. Those details help distinguish copies that may share a title but differ in publication history or collectible features.

Likewise, a cover image is useful but incomplete evidence. A cover can help match a format or cover state, yet the copyright page may contain the more direct clues about dates and printing. Conversely, a copyright page alone may not settle whether the cover, binding, price, or another documented issue point matches the version a collector wants. Treat identification as a combination of bibliographic and physical details, not a single clue.

How can I tell whether a Star Trek book is an original printing?

Start with the book itself, especially its copyright page. A title page, publication year, or ISBN can help identify a copy, but none alone proves that it is the first printing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact copy. Record the title, author, series or numbered volume, publisher, imprint, format, market, and ISBN. Similar-looking copies may have different publication details.
  2. Ask for a clear copyright-page photo. If you are buying remotely, request an image that is legible enough to inspect the printing statement, number line, dates, and publisher information. A cover photo by itself usually cannot resolve printing status.
  3. Look for printing evidence. Check for an explicit “first printing” statement, a number line, or wording indicating a later printing. Interpret the evidence according to that publisher’s practices rather than assuming every publisher marks books the same way.
  4. Compare the dates. Note the title-page date and copyright-page date, and check whether multiple copyright or reprint dates appear. “First published in [year]” can remain on later printings, so that wording by itself does not establish an original printing.
  5. Compare physical details. Check the cover, price, binding, barcode, and any documented issue points against a reliable bibliographic or collecting reference for the exact title and format.
  6. Use the ISBN as a clue, not a verdict. An ISBN can help distinguish an edition or format, but it does not conclusively identify a particular press run.

When the seller’s listing says “first edition” but provides no printing evidence, treat that as an unverified description. The edition and the printing are separate questions; ask for the relevant page and check the exact publication history before paying extra.

A practical checklist for remote purchases

Before buying online, make a short list of what you need the seller to establish. First, confirm that the photos show the actual copy for sale, not a representative cover image. Ask for a readable copyright-page image; if the printing indicators are too small or blurred, request a closer photo. Then compare the title, author, imprint, format, and ISBN in the listing with what is visible in the book. If you are collecting a particular cover or issue point, request clear images of the cover and any physical feature that is relevant to that claim.

Next, separate facts from seller interpretation. “Copyright page says first printing” is a checkable statement; “rare first edition” is a conclusion that needs more support. If a listing identifies a later printing, that may be perfectly suitable for reading, but it should not be priced or described as the earliest press run. If the listing and the book disagree, ask for clarification before paying a premium. When the seller cannot provide the details, treat the printing as unverified instead of filling in the gaps yourself.

For an in-person purchase, the same process is quick: inspect the copyright page, check the printing statement or number line, compare the cover and format, and note the condition. You do not need to turn every purchase into an exhaustive provenance investigation. The level of checking should match the stakes: a low-cost reader copy does not require the same certainty as a scarce or expensive copy being sold specifically for its printing.

What the ISBN can and cannot tell you

An ISBN is useful for narrowing down a book’s identity, especially when format or edition differs, but it is not a universal press-run code. Do not conclude that a book is a first printing simply because its ISBN matches a listing or reference. Conversely, a matching title with a different ISBN may signal a different format or edition worth investigating, rather than a mistake to ignore. Match the ISBN with the actual copy’s title, imprint, format, dates, printing indicators, and physical details.

For a buyer, the practical question is not “Does this number prove everything?” but “Does this number fit the version being offered?” Use it as one part of the identification record. The copyright page and publisher-specific conventions remain important when the question is printing status.

Should I buy the original printing or the reprint?

Choose based on what you want from the copy. Reading value, collector appeal, condition, verification, and resale potential do not necessarily point to the same book.

Consideration Original printing Reprint
Reading Usually no necessary advantage unless the text or edition differs Usually the practical choice when you want the story
Collector appeal May matter for an early cover, documented issue point, scarcity, or historical significance Usually less collector-oriented, though a particular variant may have demand
Price A premium is justified only when title, condition, and demand support it Often cheaper and easier to replace
Verification Requires evidence of the exact printing; seller labels can confuse edition and printing Printing may matter less to a reader, but confirm the format and that the copy is complete
Condition A scarce early printing in poor condition may be less appealing than a clean later copy A clean copy can be the better purchase for reading
Resale Depends on exact printing, condition, market, and demand Usually less collector-oriented, though some reprints can be desirable variants

There is no reliable universal price for “old Star Trek books.” Value depends on the title, printing, condition, market, and buyer demand. A general collecting guide makes the same essential distinction: not all first printings are valuable. See Collecting Old & Rare Books in the Journal of Antiques (2022).

For reading, compare the price and condition of the copies actually available to you. If a later printing offers the story you want in a clean, complete copy for less, the first printing may bring no practical benefit. If you are collecting, the comparison changes: an early printing, cover, or documented issue point may be precisely what you are buying. In that case, compare like with like—same title, printing, format, and broadly similar condition—rather than comparing an expensive collector listing with an unrelated low-cost copy.

Condition is part of that comparison, not a footnote. A copy that is technically early but visibly worn may not be as satisfying as a clean reprint, particularly if your priority is reading. For a collector, condition can affect whether the premium makes sense, but a condition label alone is not a substitute for looking at the actual book. Request photos that show the condition and the evidence supporting the claimed printing.

Resale should be treated just as cautiously. An early printing may have more appeal to a collector, but that does not guarantee that it will sell quickly, for a profit, or at a particular price. Demand can differ by title, format, condition, and buyer. A guide or seller’s asking price can provide context, but neither alone establishes what a comparable copy is currently selling for. Check comparable copies carefully and avoid making an investment decision from the words “first printing” alone.

When an original printing makes sense

  • You collect a particular Star Trek line, author, imprint, cover, or publication period.
  • The seller can show clear copyright-page and printing evidence.
  • The copy’s condition is strong enough to justify the premium over a later copy.
  • A reliable reference documents a meaningful issue point, scarce format, early cover, or relevant provenance.
  • You have compared copies of the same title and printing rather than relying on a generic “first edition” label.

An original is a stronger choice when the thing you value is attached to that exact physical version—not merely because it is older. For instance, a collector pursuing an early cover or a documented issue point should verify that the offered copy has the relevant feature and that the printing evidence aligns. The more specific the claim, the more specific the evidence should be.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a reprint makes sense

  • Your priority is reading rather than owning an early press run.
  • The original printing costs substantially more without a clear difference in text or format.
  • You prefer a cleaner or more replaceable copy.
  • The seller cannot verify the claimed original printing.
  • You are completing a story arc and want the book at a reasonable cost.

A reprint is not a consolation prize if it meets your goal. It may be the sensible purchase when the book is meant to be read, when the price gap is large, or when the alleged early printing cannot be authenticated. Just make sure that the copy is the format you want and that it is complete and in acceptable condition.

What should I check before paying a collector premium?

Do not pay extra merely because a listing uses the words “first edition,” “first printing,” “rare,” or “collectible.” Make sure the claim, copy, and asking price all refer to the same specific title, format, and printing.

  • Evidence: Does the copyright page support the claimed printing? Are the number line or printing statement and dates readable?
  • Identity: Do the title, author, publisher, imprint, format, and ISBN match the copy being offered?
  • Condition: Is the copy’s actual condition good enough to warrant the premium compared with a clean reprint?
  • Distinctive features: Is an early cover or issue point documented for this exact book, rather than inferred from its age?
  • Market context: Are comparable copies of the same printing and similar condition recognized by buyers at a premium? A broad claim about Star Trek books cannot answer that title-specific question.

Collecting references can help with identification and context, but their existence does not establish a current sale price. The Star Trek Book Club’s collecting-reference list includes the fourth edition of House of Collectibles Price Guide to Star Trek Collectibles. Cygnus-X1’s description identifies an original 1996 edition and says it covers thousands of Star Trek memorabilia prices. Treat a dated guide as a reference, not as proof of what a particular copy will sell for now.

Use a guide to orient your questions, not to skip the comparison. Confirm that its entry applies to the title, format, and version you have, and consider whether the reference is dated. A broad memorabilia guide can be useful background, but a current price judgment still depends on comparable copies and the specific buyer market. If no trustworthy title-specific comparison is available, say so rather than substituting a universal estimate.

What common identification mistakes should I avoid?

The most expensive mistake is treating one clue as conclusive. Printing status, edition, condition, and value are connected, but none can be substituted for the others.

  • Publication year equals first printing: It does not. The phrase “first published in” can remain on later printings.
  • ISBN equals printing: It does not conclusively identify a press run. Use it alongside the copyright page and publication details.
  • First printing equals valuable: It does not. Demand, condition, scarcity, and significance determine whether collectors recognize a premium.
  • Reprint equals revised edition: Not necessarily. Confirm whether text, added material, format, or other edition details changed.
  • One Pocket Books copy represents all copies: It does not. The exact title, format, imprint, and publication history matter.

If you cannot verify the printing, price the book as the copy you can establish it to be—not as the more valuable version a listing claims it might be. For a reader, that uncertainty often makes a clean, affordable copy the lower-risk choice.

Another common trap is letting a plausible story replace evidence. A seller may describe a copy as old, scarce, or part of a notable launch, but those general facts do not establish that particular copy’s press run or value. The launch history of a publishing program gives context; it does not make every book from the period rare. Similarly, the presence of several dates on a copyright page should prompt a closer look rather than an automatic conclusion. Interpret dates and printing statements according to the publisher’s conventions.

Finally, do not confuse a collectible’s personal appeal with a market premium. A cover you love, a favorite author, or a place in your reading sequence can make a copy worth buying to you. That is a valid reason to choose it, but it is different from evidence that the copy has broad resale demand. Decide which kind of value matters before comparing prices.

Frequently asked questions

The short answers below address the most common buying questions: printing identification, value, and whether an ISBN can settle the matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Star Trek book a first printing or a reprint?

Check the copyright page for an explicit first-printing statement, number line, or later-printing statement, then interpret it using that publisher’s conventions. Compare dates, format, imprint, cover, and documented issue points as well. A publication year, cover photo, or ISBN alone does not prove the press run.

How can I tell if my Star Trek Pocket Books novel is an original printing?

Identify the exact title, author, format, imprint, and ISBN, then inspect the copyright page and printing indicators. Pocket Books identification guidance notes that many Pocket Books copies are reprints, so do not assume a Pocket Books copy is the first edition or first printing of the underlying work. Compare the copy with a reliable reference for that exact title.

Are old Star Trek books worth anything?

Some copies may interest collectors, but age alone does not establish value. Price depends on the exact title and printing, condition, scarcity or significance, market, and demand. There is no reliable universal price for old Star Trek books, and not every first printing is valuable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy the first printing or the cheaper reprint?

If your priority is reading, a clean, affordable reprint is usually the practical choice, provided it is the format you want and the edition has not changed in a way that matters to you. Consider paying more for an original printing when you collect that exact version, can verify it, and the condition and comparable market evidence justify the premium.

Does the ISBN tell me if a Star Trek book is a first edition?

An ISBN can help identify an edition or format, but it is not conclusive proof of a particular printing. Use it alongside the title and publisher details, copyright page, dates, printing indicators, and publication history.

Does a signature prove that a Star Trek book is a first printing?

No. A signature may matter to a collector, but it does not establish the book’s edition or press run. Check the publication evidence independently.

Can two copies with the same ISBN have different printing status?

An ISBN is not conclusive proof of a particular printing. Compare the copyright page, printing indicators, format, and publication history for each copy rather than treating the ISBN as a press-run identifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are paperback and hardcover copies of the same Star Trek story the same edition?

Not necessarily. Format is one of the details to identify, and a different format may have its own publication history. Compare the exact copy’s publisher and imprint information before drawing a conclusion.

The Bottom Line

If you want to read the story, buy the best-condition affordable copy that suits your format preference; a clean reprint is often the sensible choice. If you want to collect, verify the earliest printing through the copyright page and publisher-specific clues, then check the publisher, format, condition, cover, and documented issue points. Pay a premium only when comparable copies and real demand support it. A Star Trek first printing is a collecting attribute, not an automatic guarantee of value.
