Spot a Puzzle-Game Copycat: A Browser Checklist

To tell whether a browser puzzle is original or a copycat, check who publishes it, whether it credits its influences, and whether it copies a distinctive name or visual identity—not just familiar rules. A five-letter guessing game, a tile-merging grid, or falling blocks can share a basic mechanic without copying protected expression. The stronger warning signs are a near-identical layout, artwork, colors, sounds, name, or source assets, especially when the page obscures the original creator or monetizes a game that creator offers free.

What should you check first on a browser puzzle page?

Start with identity and attribution, then compare the presentation. No single clue proves infringement, and this checklist is a way to distinguish an official game, an acknowledged fork, a genre relative, and a suspicious lookalike—not a substitute for a court’s legal analysis.

  1. Check the publisher and domain. Find the organization or creator named on the page, then compare its address with the original’s known destination. For Wordle, the original is published by The New York Times Games; a page using “Wordle” in its domain or title is not official just because it follows the same rules. For Cirulli’s 2048, start with his original page or play2048.co. Look for a publisher link or credits page, not merely a familiar logo.
  2. Look for credit and a license. An honest derivative usually identifies its source and explains what permission allows reuse. Gabriele Cirulli’s 2048 README openly calls the game a clone and names the earlier games in its lineage. A fork that preserves the applicable license and attribution can be legitimate even if it closely resembles the project it derives from. Missing credit is a warning, not proof by itself: not every independently made game has to cite a genre influence.
  3. Compare the distinctive details, not only the rules. Ask whether the board, palette, icons, animation, sound, text, keyboard placement, and surrounding interface all match. A shared mechanic is weak evidence on its own; a cluster of matching expressive details is more concerning.
  4. Inspect the name and listing. A title that repeats a hit game’s name, adds a generic suffix such as “the app,” or implies official status can be search bait. Check whether the page clearly identifies its actual publisher and whether its description takes credit for a mechanic it may have borrowed.
  5. Notice how it makes money. Ads or a subscription do not establish copying or illegality. But monetizing a close imitation of a free original, while hiding the original creator, is a meaningful ethical and attribution warning.
  6. Use source inspection as a clue, not a verdict. Many browser puzzles use visible JavaScript, CSS, and image assets. If you know how to inspect a public repository or page source, identical code structure, filenames, or sprite sheets can indicate reuse. Reuse may be permitted by a license; copied code with required notices removed raises a different concern from independently written code implementing the same rules.

For each comparison, keep the question narrow: is this game borrowing a type of puzzle, or has it taken a recognizable identity? A nearly identical name plus matching layout, palette, assets, and commercial presentation is a stronger pattern than any one feature viewed in isolation.

Are puzzle mechanics protected by copyright?

In the United States, copyright protects original expression, not an idea, procedure, system, or method of operation. Section 102(b) of the Copyright Act is the central rule: guessing a word from feedback, merging numbered tiles, or clearing lines with falling blocks is not automatically owned by the first game to use that mechanic.

That distinction is why word-feedback games did not begin with Wordle. The lineage includes Bulls and Cows, Jotto, Mastermind, and the television game Lingo. A later game can use the broad idea of guessing a hidden word and receiving letter clues without thereby copying Josh Wardle’s particular program, text, or overall presentation. Likewise, 2048’s merging loop belongs to a chain of related games rather than a single inventor’s exclusive control of every version of the rule.

What can matter is how a game expresses its rules: original code, artwork, sounds, text, and a combination of visual choices. Attorney Mark Methenitis put the distinction this way in an Ars Technica interview published on 12 January 2022: “Whenever you have a copyright, you’re protecting the expression, not the idea. It’s a line a lot of people have a very hard time with, especially when you get into games.”

Courts also filter out features that are conventional or practically dictated by a genre—often described as scènes à faire—and may consider whether an idea and its expression have merged because there are very few practical ways to express it. A grid may be a natural tool for a word puzzle; gravity is expected in a falling-block game. The legal question is not simply whether two games feel alike, but whether the similarities that remain after filtering out rules and genre necessities are substantial and concern protectable expression.

Names raise a separate issue. Copyright is not the tool that generally protects a game title as a brand; trademark principles may apply to names and source confusion. In the United Kingdom, passing-off law can also matter when a misleading name or presentation makes people think a game comes from the original creator. The legal details vary by jurisdiction, commercial context, and facts, so a visual resemblance is not a universal legal verdict.

How can you tell the real Wordle from a lookalike?

The official Wordle is a New York Times game; a five-letter guessing puzzle elsewhere is not automatically a copycat. Use the publisher and domain first, then examine whether a rival has borrowed Wordle’s distinctive presentation as well as its basic feedback mechanic.

Wardle made Wordle for his partner and opened it to the public in 2021. The New York Times bought it in January 2022 for a price described by the paper as in the low seven figures, and kept the game free with one puzzle a day. The game’s popularity accelerated quickly: Comic Basics’ 2026 retrospective recounts 90 daily players on 1 November 2021 and 300,000 by early January 2022; The Next Web reported more than 2 million daily players in January 2022. Those figures describe different points and reports in the early growth period, not today’s audience.

The New York Times asserted in a 6 March 2024 GitHub DMCA notice that its Wordle copyright included the 5×6 grid, green and yellow feedback tiles, and the keyboard beneath the grid. That assertion is not the same as a court ruling that every one of those interface elements is protectable. The Associated Press reported that George Washington University IP professor Robert Brauneis disputed the copyrightability of a grid used to implement the game’s rules: “If you’re using that six by five grid to implement game rules (of correctly guessing a word) … I think that grid is not copyrightable.” AP and Copyright Lately also noted that Wordle’s US copyright registration lists its computer program code and instruction text, rather than colors or graphics. A DMCA notice is a claimant’s allegation and does not settle the legal boundary.

That makes a practical distinction important. A word game that uses five-letter guesses and colored hints but changes its grid, palette, keyboard, name, and other presentation may be a legitimate relative. A page that combines the same 5×6 arrangement, green/yellow/gray tiles, QWERTY keyboard placement, and surrounding interface looks much more like an attempt to reproduce the recognizable presentation. Similarity of the full package matters more than the shared puzzle rule alone.

In March 2024, the Times pursued hundreds of alleged copycats, including open-source Wordle-like projects. Copyright Lately reported that Reactle had been forked and adapted nearly two thousand times, citing The Verge. That enforcement drew criticism because mechanics and visual conventions can overlap with protectable expression questions; it should not be read as a settled rule that every Wordle-inspired game is unlawful.

There are clear examples of relatives rather than photocopies: Quordle changes the task to four words; Heardle uses songs; Quantle uses equations, a 10×6 grid, green and purple, and a non-QWERTY keyboard. Those examples show how a recognizable genre can develop variations. They are not a guarantee that every implementation is legally safe, but they illustrate why the shared idea alone does not answer the copycat question.

Is 2048 a copy of Threes?

2048 is part of an acknowledged chain of derivatives, but Cirulli’s game should not be described as a pirate of Threes. The important distinction is between openly credited influence, permission to reuse a particular implementation, and later sites that borrow the name or presentation without preserving credit.

The sequence described by Cirulli runs from Threes, released for iOS in February 2014 by Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend after about 14 months of design, to Veewo Studio’s 1024, then Saming’s browser 2048, and Cirulli’s 2048, released on 9 March 2014. Cirulli’s README says: “A small clone of 1024, based on Saming’s 2048 (also a clone). 2048 was indirectly inspired by Threes.” The live game credits 1024 and describes itself as conceptually similar to Threes. That is unusually direct acknowledgement of the lineage.

Cirulli released his implementation under the MIT License, which permits reuse, copying, and commercial use subject to the license’s terms, including retaining its notice. Thus a later 2048 fork can be license-compliant while still being unattractive or misleading if it strips credit, obscures its source, or wraps the familiar game in intrusive advertising. “Clone” can describe a derivative relationship without resolving either its legal status or its ethics.

The rapid spread helps explain why a player sees so many versions. Cirulli’s 2048 reportedly drew over 4 million visitors in less than a week in 2014. The Verge reported in 2022 that Threes’ first clones arrived in about three weeks; Pocket Gamer reported 15 new Threes clones a day in the App Store in April 2014, as recounted by Wikipedia’s 2048 article. Ketchapp’s 2048 appeared on the App Store just over a week after Cirulli’s version and reached the top games chart, according to The Verge. Ketchapp told The Verge that around 90% of hyper-casual gaming revenue came from in-game ads. Those are attributed historical reports, not estimates of how today’s browser pages perform.

Vollmer and Wohlwend did not sue. Vollmer described a mechanics patent as ethically dubious, while the visible presentation of Cirulli’s version—an autumnal palette—differed from Threes’ tri-color animations. Wohlwend criticized Ketchapp’s commercial conduct rather than Cirulli’s openly credited project; The Verge reported that Ketchapp’s store page said it was inspired by Cirulli. The contrast is useful: a derivative can be candid and licensed, while another can capitalize on the same chain in a way the original creators regard as exploitative.

To identify the design-original of this merge-tile family, see Asher Vollmer’s Threes site. To play Cirulli’s version, use his original page or play2048.co. For another 2048 page, check whether its credits and license notices remain visible rather than assuming every game bearing the number is the official version.

What does the Tetris case show about visual copying?

The 2012 case Tetris Holding, LLC v. Xio Interactive, Inc. shows why a game can reuse the abstract idea of a puzzle and still cross a line by copying its distinctive expression. The court accepted that falling blocks and line-clearing rules were not protected by copyright, but ruled for Tetris Holding because Mino copied a combination of recognizable design choices.

Xio admitted it intended Mino to be “its version of Tetris.” The court identified the 10-wide by 20-high well, exact tetromino shapes and color mapping, ghost-piece shadow, garbage-line display, board-frame proportions, and movement and rotation behavior among the similarities. It rejected the argument that the rules forced those exact visual choices, reasoning that other expressions of falling-block puzzles were possible. The court’s concern, as quoted by game-law writer Stephen C. McArthur in 2013, was “the wholesale copying of the Tetris look” more than any single resemblance examined alone.

This is why “it has blocks that fall” is not enough to call a browser game a Tetris copycat, but the familiar seven pieces, their specific colors, a 10×20 well, ghost piece, and matching frame together are a much stronger signal. A falling-block game with its own pieces, palette, and board dimensions can share the genre without reproducing that complete visual identity. The record is specific to the case; it does not mean every matching feature is automatically protected in every context.

Can changing the art make a reskin original?

Not necessarily. The 2012 Spry Fox LLC v. Lolapps / 6Waves dispute over Triple Town and Yeti Town illustrates that courts can examine a game’s overall structure and progression, not only whether its illustrations or code are identical.

Both games involved matching tiles that upgraded through a hierarchy, with an antagonist interfering. Triple Town used woodland elements—bushes, trees, houses, churches—and a bear; Yeti Town shifted to an Arctic setting with saplings, trees, tents, cabins, and a yeti. Its art and code differed, but the court denied a motion to dismiss, applying extrinsic and intrinsic comparisons and considering the “total concept and feel.” Game bloggers had called Yeti Town a clone. The parties later settled, with IP going to Spry Fox; the motion-stage ruling was not a final trial verdict that every similar match-and-upgrade mechanic infringes.

The alleged context also mattered: the record included a shared NDA and beta access followed by a competing launch two months later, and the title reused the word “Town.” Extra features such as a 3D tilt do not erase the portions alleged to be copied; a comparison considers similarities as well as additions. Conversely, a 6×6 match grid may be a practical design constraint rather than distinctive expression: the game-law discussion cited by Copyright Lately notes that a board can be too small to work or too large to remain useful. The lesson is not that a hierarchy or match grid belongs to one game, but that changing bears to yetis does not automatically make a close reproduction of a particular game’s distinctive progression original.

Why isn’t “it plays like that game” enough?

Game history and earlier cases show that shared rules, genre conventions, and functional constraints leave room for games to resemble one another without necessarily infringing. A claim of copying needs more than resemblance at the level of “same kind of puzzle.”

For three decades, US cases often filtered out genre features before judging similarity. Atari v. Amusement World (1981) found 22 similarities between Meteors and Asteroids, including intentional imitation, but did not find infringement because rock-splitting spaceship games necessarily shared features. Data East v. Epyx (1988) treated karate moves, a referee, and scoring in competing karate games as constrained by the sport and technology. Capcom v. Data East (1994) found that even fireballs in competing fighting games were not similar enough in expressive detail.

Tetris Holding and Spry Fox are important later examples of courts scrutinizing the specific expressive package and overall impression. They do not erase the earlier principle that rules and genre necessities are filtered out. In practical terms, compare the features that could have been designed differently: exact art, sound, layout, character and object choices, animations, text, and name. If most of the match comes from features any game in the genre needs, the resemblance is less informative.

What role do names, app stores, and licenses play?

A copied or confusing name can raise a different issue from copied artwork or code. Trademark law is generally the relevant framework for brand names, while copyright addresses original expression. The exact protection depends on use, jurisdiction, and whether the name causes confusion about who published the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In January 2022, Wordle creator Josh Wardle had not registered the name, and older unrelated apps using “Wordle” already existed. The Times’ acquisition changed the practical context, and later trademark enforcement tightened control over the name. In the UK, legal commentators Simon Portman and Daniel Goodall noted that passing off may apply if a name makes the public think a clone comes from the original. They also explained that an unregistered-mark case is weaker where a free web toy is not trading commercially. These are jurisdiction- and fact-dependent distinctions, not a blanket rule that using a familiar word is unlawful.

Apple’s App Store Guideline 4.1 is a store policy and contractual rule, not a court’s copyright decision. Its language tells developers: “Don’t simply copy the latest popular app on the App Store or make some minor changes to another app’s name or UI and pass it off as your own.” It helps explain why iOS Wordle clones disappeared quickly in January 2022 while web versions multiplied: browser pages, GitHub, and portals do not have the same store-level review shield. Apple can remove an app under its own rules without a court resolving every copyright question. Steam likewise removes clearly infringing clones when notified, while GitHub handles DMCA notices.

In March 2024, the Times’ DMCA campaign brought that distinction into view: DMCA is a copyright process, not a trademark process, and a takedown notice is not a final legal judgment. A browser puzzle can remain online because a portal has not reviewed it, not because a court has declared it lawful. Likewise, removal from a store does not itself prove that every element of a game was protected.

How has AI changed the copycat problem?

AI-assisted coding has lowered the effort needed to turn a simple puzzle concept into a playable browser imitation, so a fast prototype or one-mechanic game may be copied within days. It has not changed the legal distinction between a game’s rules and its protectable expression, and it does not make a new-looking name or copied assets original.

Ars Technica reported on 19 October 2026 that developers were increasingly cautious about sharing early work. Alliance Arts delayed a Steam Next Fest demo of Drunken Goddess Reflux over concern that the game could be imitated before launch. Lucas Pope said he discusses work in progress less because it may “get slurped up by AI.” In March 2026, designer Freya Holmér shared a rotating-pivot Tetris-like prototype; playable AI-generated copies, including rotatris.com, appeared within days. Holmér said: “Y’know it kinda disincentivizes me from sharing progress when there are slop ghouls around every corner, AI or otherwise.”

Those accounts show how quickly a mechanic can be reproduced, not how prevalent copycats are across all browser games; there is no established percentage for that. A simple puzzle with stock-looking UI is easier to imitate than a game whose identity depends on detailed art, layered progression, sound, writing, and a known publisher. For players, the reliable signal remains provenance: a named creator, an official destination, visible attribution, and a presentation that does not pretend to be the original.

What should you do if a page looks like a copycat?

Save enough information to evaluate the page later, then use the platform’s reporting route if you believe it misrepresents its source or reuses protected material. A player does not need to make a legal accusation to avoid a misleading page.

  • Record the page address, publisher name, and the date you saw it.
  • Capture screenshots of the title, game screen, credits, and any claims that it is official or licensed.
  • Check whether the original creator names the page as an official version, fork, or permitted derivative.
  • If it is in an app store or game portal, use that service’s report mechanism. For alleged copyright copying, the rights holder or their representative—not a casual player—usually has the relevant claim and supporting evidence.
  • Choose the original or an openly credited alternative if the page hides its lineage or appears to impersonate another publisher.

Do not treat a visual resemblance as proof of theft, and do not assume that a page is legitimate because it loads or ranks highly in search. The practical task is to identify what it is, who stands behind it, and whether its presentation gives you a fair account of its origin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play a browser puzzle if it has ads?

Yes. Advertising alone does not show that a game is copied or unauthorized. Check the publisher, credits, and license first; a free game can be a legitimate ad-supported fork if the relevant terms permit that use and required attribution remains.

Does a game’s search ranking prove it is official?

No. Search results can surface lookalikes that use a popular game’s name to attract visitors. Verify the publisher and domain independently rather than relying on the order or appearance of search results.

Should I report a suspected copycat if I’m not the game’s creator?

You can report a misleading page to the browser-game portal or app store hosting it, but describe what you observed rather than asserting a legal conclusion. The rights holder is better placed to decide whether to send a copyright or trademark complaint.

Is an AI-made puzzle automatically a copycat?

No. The use of AI does not determine whether a game copied protected expression; the same comparison of source identity, assets, interface, and other distinctive choices still applies. A game can also be AI-assisted and original, or human-made and imitative.
