SoundCloud and Bandcamp solve different problems. SoundCloud is built around streaming discovery, creator utilities and listener-based monetization. Bandcamp is built around direct sales, where fans buy digital music or physical releases from artists. Neither is universally better: choose SoundCloud when reach, discovery and platform tools matter most; choose Bandcamp when ownership, higher-value purchases and artist-to-fan commerce are the priority. Many artists use both, assigning each service a distinct job.

What is the main difference between SoundCloud and Bandcamp?

SoundCloud functions primarily as a streaming and discovery platform, while Bandcamp functions primarily as a direct-to-fan storefront with streaming attached to purchases. That difference affects how artists publish, how listeners find music, how money changes hands and what a fan receives after paying.

Decision area SoundCloud Bandcamp
Primary job Streaming discovery and creator utilities Direct sales of digital music and physical goods
Artist payment model Subscriptions, advertising-related royalties and optional fan support Revenue share on each digital or physical sale, plus payment processing
Listener relationship Fans stream through the service; access depends on the listener’s plan and the creator’s settings Buyers receive unlimited app streaming and an optional download after purchasing
Physical releases Not the central workflow described here Supports physical-goods sales, including records
Best fit Artists prioritizing discovery, distribution and creator tools Artists prioritizing direct purchases, higher-intent fans and physical editions

Is SoundCloud or Bandcamp better for artists?

SoundCloud is usually the stronger first destination for an artist trying to be discovered through streaming and creator-focused tools. Bandcamp is usually stronger when the goal is to convert an interested listener into a paying supporter of a specific release. The right choice depends on the action you want a fan to take.

Choose SoundCloud for discovery and creator utilities

SoundCloud’s workflow places listening and discovery at the center. Artists can publish tracks for an audience that is already browsing and streaming, then use the platform’s creator features and monetization options where eligible. The service also advertises partner benefits covering areas such as sounds and samples, software discounts, curator pitching, legal support and instruments. Named examples on its artist page include FL Studio, Splice, Groover and Fender, but the exact offers, eligibility and commercial terms can change; a listed partner benefit is not proof that an affiliate deal is available.

Choose Bandcamp for a sales-first release

Bandcamp treats a release as a product that a fan can buy. The product may be a digital album, a single or a physical item such as a record. A purchaser receives unlimited streaming in the Bandcamp app and can claim an optional high-quality download, making the transaction more than a temporary stream. Physical inventory, packaging and delivery remain the artist’s responsibility, so the storefront advantage should be weighed against fulfillment work.

Use both when the release needs two separate funnels

An artist can use SoundCloud to reach new listeners and Bandcamp to give committed fans a purchase option. This is an option, not a requirement: maintaining two catalogs creates extra upload, metadata, customer-service and release-planning work. It is worthwhile only when each service has a clearly different role. For example, a public stream can introduce a track, while a Bandcamp page can offer the complete release, a download and a limited record edition.

What does SoundCloud cost artists?

SoundCloud sells recurring artist subscriptions with different feature limits. Its pricing page listed the following annual prices when accessed on October 25, 2026:

Plan Price basis What is established
Artist $39 per year, billed yearly Entry artist subscription; feature limits differ from Artist Pro
Artist Pro $99 per year, billed yearly Higher-tier artist subscription; includes a different set or level of features

The published prices are annual amounts, not monthly rates. The available documentation does not provide a complete, independently sourced matrix of every upload, distribution, analytics or monetization limit for each plan, so confirm the live plan comparison before subscribing. SoundCloud can change both prices and included features.

Think of these plans as a predictable platform expense. An artist pays the subscription even in a quiet month, rather than paying SoundCloud a percentage each time a fan buys a track. That predictability may suit a creator planning regular releases, but it can feel less attractive for an occasional release with uncertain audience demand. The right comparison is not simply “subscription versus free”; it is the annual commitment versus the tools and eligible monetization the artist will actually use.

What are Bandcamp’s fees?

Bandcamp charges a share of each sale rather than the recurring artist subscription prices listed above. According to its Help Center article dated June 10, 2026, the current structure is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item sold Bandcamp revenue share Other stated charge
Digital music 15%; reduced to 10% after the stated $5,000 sales threshold Payment processing typically 4–6%
Physical goods 10% Payment processing typically 4–6%

The percentages are shares of sales, not a promise of profit. Processing is separate, and the final amount an artist keeps also depends on the price, refunds, taxes, manufacturing, packaging and fulfillment choices for physical products. Bandcamp’s fee schedule and threshold should be checked again when a release is ready to publish.

The $5,000 threshold matters when forecasting a catalog that sells over time: digital items use the 15% rate until the stated threshold is reached, then the rate drops to 10% under the published terms. Do not apply the physical-goods rate to a digital album or assume that reaching the threshold removes payment-processing charges. For a physical release, calculate the Bandcamp share and processing first, then subtract the separate costs of manufacturing, storage, packing, postage, replacements and refunds.

How does monetization differ on SoundCloud and Bandcamp?

SoundCloud monetization is tied to listening activity and eligible creator features. Bandcamp monetization is tied to a fan choosing to purchase a release or physical item. Neither model guarantees a particular income level.

How do SoundCloud Fan-Powered Royalties work?

SoundCloud describes Fan-Powered Royalties as allocating revenue according to what each fan listens to rather than dividing a pooled average across all listeners. Its official Get Paid page says that when a fan streams music, that fan’s subscription or advertising revenue goes to the artists the fan actually listened to. Eligibility, rights status and payout conditions apply, so the description should not be read as a fixed payment per stream or guaranteed earnings.

This distinction changes how an artist should read performance data. A large stream count does not by itself establish a particular payout, because the relevant variables include the listener’s subscription or advertising activity and whether the track qualifies for monetization. SoundCloud’s wording describes the allocation method, not a guaranteed minimum or a universal rate that applies to every account.

Can fans support artists directly on SoundCloud?

SoundCloud’s Fan Support feature is being rolled out in stages. Its help information currently limits artist eligibility to artists based in the United States, while fans in a broader set of countries can contribute. SoundCloud states: “Fans can send you money directly on SoundCloud. We don’t take a cut, so you receive 100% of the amount after payment processing fees.” That is SoundCloud’s own description, and the processing-fee qualification remains important.

Because eligibility is conditional, an artist should verify that the feature is active on the account and available in the intended fan countries before adding a support call to action. Treat Fan Support as an additional route for eligible creators, not as a replacement for streaming royalties or a worldwide tipping system.

How does Bandcamp turn a release into income?

Bandcamp gives the fan a direct purchase decision. Digital sales are subject to the 15% share, falling to 10% after the stated threshold, while physical goods carry a 10% share; payment processing is typically another 4–6%. A release with a smaller number of high-intent buyers may therefore produce a different result from a release that attracts many streams but few purchases.

Bandcamp also makes the product itself part of the promotion. A digital album can be paired with an optional download, while a record or other physical edition can give collectors a tangible reason to buy. That flexibility can raise the value of an individual order, but it also introduces inventory and fulfillment risks that do not arise from a stream-only release.

What are the streaming and ownership differences?

Bandcamp places a clear boundary between sampling and purchasing: a listener can play a release in full a limited number of times before seeing a purchase prompt, while a purchaser receives unlimited app streaming and an optional download. SoundCloud is primarily stream-first, and the listener’s access depends on the plan and settings involved.

What are Bandcamp’s streaming limits?

Bandcamp’s default purchase prompt appears after three full plays. The artist can adjust that setting, so the exact number a listener encounters may differ from the default. After purchase, the buyer gets unlimited streaming in the Bandcamp app and can choose the available high-quality download.

The prompt is therefore part of the release strategy, not a universal platform-wide limit that every artist must use. An artist might allow more sampling for a discovery-focused campaign or retain the default to move interested listeners toward a purchase. Whichever setting is chosen, explain clearly what the buyer receives so the distinction between preview access and purchased access is not confusing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does SoundCloud provide the same ownership model?

Not in the same way. SoundCloud’s central action is streaming, and the available listener access varies by subscription arrangement and creator settings. The confirmed information here does not establish a complete listener-plan comparison or a universal download policy, so do not assume that a SoundCloud stream carries the same post-purchase rights as a Bandcamp purchase.

How should an artist decide between SoundCloud and Bandcamp?

Start with the outcome you need from the release, then choose the platform whose mechanics support that outcome.

  1. Define the primary action. If you want people to discover and stream a track, begin with SoundCloud. If you want them to buy an album, download it or order a physical edition, begin with Bandcamp.
  2. Choose the cost model you can sustain. SoundCloud requires an annual artist subscription at the listed plan price. Bandcamp takes a percentage from transactions and also applies payment processing, so costs rise and fall with sales.
  3. Decide whether physical fulfillment is part of the release. Bandcamp’s physical-goods workflow is relevant when you are selling records or another tangible edition. If there is no physical product, that advantage may not matter.
  4. Check eligibility before promising fan support. Fan Support is conditional and currently limited to US-based artists according to SoundCloud’s help information; do not advertise it as a worldwide tip feature without confirming availability.
  5. Review the live terms immediately before launch. SoundCloud plan prices and feature limits, Bandcamp fee schedules and Fan Support availability can change.

A practical decision matrix

Ask which result would make the release successful. If the answer is more people encountering a track, SoundCloud’s stream-first workflow and creator utilities are aligned with that objective. If success means selling a defined number of albums, downloads or records, Bandcamp’s product page and purchase flow are aligned with it. If both outcomes matter, assign one service to discovery and the other to conversion rather than treating duplicate uploads as the strategy itself.

Also consider timing. A creator with an annual SoundCloud plan may prefer to schedule several releases and use the subscription throughout the year. A creator testing one small release may prefer Bandcamp’s transaction-based model, where the platform share follows actual sales. That is a planning consideration, not a prediction of which service will earn more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can an artist use both platforms without confusing fans?

Give each service a specific job and make the destination clear wherever you share the release.

  1. Use SoundCloud for the discovery version. Publish the track or preview where new listeners can stream it and encounter your creator profile.
  2. Use Bandcamp for the ownership version. Offer the complete digital release, optional download and any physical edition from a product page.
  3. Keep metadata consistent. Match artist name, release title, track order, credits and artwork so a listener can recognize the same work on both services.
  4. Explain the difference in one sentence. Tell fans which link is for streaming discovery and which link is for purchasing or supporting the release directly.
  5. Track the workload. Two platforms mean two sets of uploads, edits, comments, customer questions and policy checks. Continue only if the additional reach or sales justifies that work.

Use separate calls to action rather than sending every fan to both links without context. “Stream the single on SoundCloud” and “Buy the full release or record on Bandcamp” tells a listener what will happen after the click. Keep prices, release dates and edition names synchronized so fans do not mistake a preview for a missing track or assume that a Bandcamp purchase is required to hear a SoundCloud stream.

What should listeners choose?

Choose based on how you want to discover and support music. SoundCloud is the natural starting point for browsing streams and finding emerging or unfamiliar tracks through a creator-oriented service. Bandcamp is the better destination when you already value a release and want your payment to be connected to a specific digital or physical purchase.

  • For sampling and discovery: start with SoundCloud’s stream-first experience.
  • For buying an album or record: use Bandcamp, where the transaction includes purchaser streaming and an optional download.
  • For direct support: look for an available Bandcamp purchase or, where eligibility permits, SoundCloud Fan Support.
  • For a specific physical release: check the Bandcamp product listing, since physical-goods availability is release-specific.

A listener does not have to choose one service permanently. Someone may discover a track on SoundCloud, then purchase the album or a record on Bandcamp. The meaningful choice is whether the immediate goal is low-friction listening or ownership and direct financial support.

What are the biggest mistakes to avoid?

  • Treating streams and sales as interchangeable. A stream is not the same customer action as buying a release, and the services calculate or collect money differently.
  • Quoting SoundCloud prices without the billing basis. The listed $39 and $99 figures are annual prices billed yearly, not monthly prices.
  • Ignoring Bandcamp processing fees. The 15%, 10% and 10% shares do not include the typical 4–6% payment-processing charge.
  • Promising Fan Support to every artist. Eligibility is currently limited by geography and rollout stage.
  • Assuming every Bandcamp stream is unlimited. The default pre-purchase experience allows three full plays before the prompt; unlimited app streaming is tied to purchase.
  • Expecting a universal winner. The platforms optimize for different workflows, so a decision based only on popularity or a single fee percentage can mislead.
  • Forgetting physical-release economics. A 10% Bandcamp share on a record does not cover manufacturing, packaging, postage, storage or replacements. Include those costs in the release price and production plan.
  • Assuming partner benefits are guaranteed. SoundCloud’s examples of software, sample, pitching, legal and instrument benefits can change, and availability does not establish an affiliate relationship.

What information should be rechecked before launch?

Prices, eligibility rules, fee schedules and partner benefits are changeable commercial terms. Recheck SoundCloud’s current pricing and Fan Support help information, and Bandcamp’s current fee and streaming-limit documentation when relying on a figure in a release plan or an article. The official material available for this comparison does not provide a complete Bandcamp plan-and-feature matrix, a full SoundCloud listener subscription comparison or neutral performance statistics showing that one service consistently delivers better outcomes.

For a specific release, verify the exact Bandcamp product settings, physical inventory and download options, then confirm that SoundCloud monetization eligibility and any Fan Support controls are active on the intended account. Keeping a dated record of the terms you used for budgeting makes later changes easier to explain to collaborators and fans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SoundCloud publish a fixed payment rate for every stream?

No fixed per-stream rate is established here. SoundCloud describes Fan-Powered Royalties as directing a fan’s subscription or advertising revenue toward the artists that fan actually listened to, so results vary with listener behavior and eligibility rather than following one universal rate.

Can an artist change Bandcamp’s three-play purchase prompt?

Yes. Three full plays is the default before the prompt appears, but Bandcamp allows the artist to adjust that setting for a release. The setting controls the sampling experience; purchasers still receive unlimited app streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is SoundCloud Fan Support available to artists everywhere?

Not according to the current help information. Eligibility is presently limited to US-based artists while the feature rolls out, although fans in a broader group of countries may be able to contribute. An artist should confirm that Fan Support is enabled before promoting it.

What should I calculate before setting a Bandcamp price?

Start with the listed Bandcamp share and the typical 4–6% processing charge, then account separately for the costs of making, packing and delivering any physical item. A price that looks profitable before those deductions may leave little margin after fulfillment.

Is Bandcamp better for selling a vinyl record?

Bandcamp is the more relevant workflow when the release includes a record or another physical item because it supports physical-goods sales. Check the specific product listing and include manufacturing and fulfillment costs; the platform fee alone does not determine profitability.

Should an artist upload every release to both platforms?

No. Using both is optional. Upload to both when SoundCloud’s discovery role and Bandcamp’s purchase role each serve a clear purpose, and account for the extra metadata, customer-service and policy work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are SoundCloud’s partner benefits guaranteed for every artist?

No. SoundCloud lists examples involving sounds and samples, software, curator pitching, legal support and instruments, including FL Studio, Splice, Groover and Fender. Offers and eligibility can change, so confirm the live terms for the account and region.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose SoundCloud for streaming discovery, creator utilities and eligible listener-based monetization. Choose Bandcamp for direct purchases, optional downloads and physical releases such as records. Use both only when you can give each one a distinct job, and recheck current prices, fees and eligibility before committing.
