Short answer: eARC is the TV-to-soundbar HDMI return path that can carry high-bitrate and uncompressed surround formats, including Dolby Atmos, when both devices support it. For clear speech, use the soundbar’s dialogue or voice control sparingly and adjust the center channel rather than simply turning up the master volume. Movie, Surround and 3D modes change equalization or spatial processing; they cannot create real rear or height channels that your speakers and source do not provide.
This guide explains the connections, formats, cable choice, speech controls and listening modes that matter when you watch films through a soundbar.

What is eARC on a soundbar?
Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) sends audio from a television to a soundbar through one HDMI cable. It is the higher-bandwidth successor to ARC. Sony’s 2026 support documentation describes eARC as “an improved version of the Audio Return Channel (ARC)” and lists bandwidth of up to 37 Mbps.
That extra capacity allows compatible equipment to carry uncompressed 5.1- and 7.1-channel audio and high-bitrate formats such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio. Samsung likewise describes eARC as a one-cable path that can reproduce audio in its original resolution, including DTS Master, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The important limitation is end-to-end compatibility. Both the television and soundbar need eARC for those capabilities. If either device has only ARC, the connection falls back to ARC’s lower-bandwidth limits, even if the soundbar itself supports Atmos.
eARC versus ARC
| Characteristic | eARC | ARC |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum bandwidth | Up to 37 Mbps, according to Sony Canada’s 2026 documentation | Lower bandwidth; the exact ceiling depends on the implementation |
| Typical format capability | Uncompressed 5.1/7.1, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio when both devices and the source support them | Compressed or lower-bandwidth formats; capabilities vary by television and soundbar |
| Connection | TV HDMI eARC port to soundbar HDMI OUT eARC/ARC port | TV HDMI ARC port to soundbar HDMI OUT ARC port |
A soundbar can still work over ARC, but you should not assume that an ARC television will pass every soundtrack listed on the soundbar’s box.

Do I need eARC for Dolby Atmos?
You need eARC when Atmos is coming from the television’s own apps or from a device connected to the TV and the soundtrack uses a format that exceeds the TV’s ARC output. Sony’s Atmos guidance states that an eARC TV-to-soundbar path can play Atmos from TV content, while a non-eARC TV cannot pass Atmos directly from the TV.
There is another topology: connect an Atmos-capable Blu-ray player or streaming box directly to an HDMI input on a compatible soundbar, then send video to the TV. This lets the soundbar decode the source audio without relying on the television’s ARC output. It only works if the soundbar’s HDMI input accepts the source’s video resolution and audio format.
Choose the connection that matches your equipment
- eARC TV and eARC soundbar: Connect the two eARC ports and let the television return supported formats to the bar.
- ARC-only TV with an HDMI-input soundbar: Plug the Atmos source into the soundbar first, then connect the bar’s HDMI output to the TV.
- ARC-only TV and no suitable soundbar input: Expect the television to limit the soundtrack to the formats its ARC implementation can return.
Always check the source device’s audio-output setting as well. A player set to stereo or PCM cannot deliver an Atmos bitstream, regardless of the cable.

- Locate the correct ports. Plug one end into the soundbar’s HDMI OUT eARC/ARC socket and the other into the television’s HDMI eARC/ARC socket. A regular HDMI input on either device will not provide the return channel.
- Use a suitable cable. Choose a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Sony warns that an unsuitable cable can restrict high-quality audio formats.
- Turn on the return channel. In the TV’s sound or external-device settings, enable eARC or choose Auto. Enable eARC or the equivalent HDMI-control option in the soundbar menu or app.
- Set the source format. On a Blu-ray player or streaming box, choose bitstream or the manufacturer’s equivalent passthrough setting when you want the soundbar to decode Dolby or DTS audio. “PCM” may convert the signal before it reaches the bar.
- Test known content. Play a title with a confirmed Atmos or DTS soundtrack. The soundbar display or control app should report the received format; a generic “PCM” or “Stereo” indicator means the source or TV is not sending the expected bitstream.
- Check video compatibility for direct connections. If a player is connected to the soundbar, verify that the bar passes your required resolution, HDR format and refresh rate to the TV.
What should happen when setup works?
The television should route its internal-app audio through the soundbar, and the bar should identify a compatible Dolby or DTS stream when one is playing. Menu labels and indicators vary, so use the model’s manual to interpret “Dolby Audio,” “Atmos,” “DTS,” “PCM” or “Stereo.”
What HDMI cable do I need for eARC?
A High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is the safest choice for an eARC and Atmos connection. The Ethernet designation matters because eARC uses the HDMI return-channel wiring; an old or damaged cable can cause dropouts, force a lower format or prevent the devices from negotiating eARC.
You do not need to buy a cable marketed with a particular premium label merely because the system is called “8K” or “Atmos.” Use a certified, undamaged High-Speed cable with Ethernet, keep it within a practical length, and replace it if moving the cable changes the symptom. If your system also carries very high-resolution video, select a cable specification that meets the video requirement as well as the audio return requirement.
Why is movie dialogue so quiet?
Film mixes commonly place speech in a center channel while music, ambience and effects spread across the other channels. At a low listening level, the center-channel speech can seem buried beneath sudden action or a wide music score. Room reflections, a soundbar positioned inside a cabinet and a listener sitting far off-axis can make the imbalance worse.

Dialogue processing raises or emphasizes the speech range, and some models let you change the center-channel level. Samsung says its Voice Enhance mode improves dialogue intelligibility; supported Samsung models provide center-channel adjustment from -6 dB to +6 dB. Sony offers Voice Zoom and Dialogue enhancer controls, with availability depending on the selected post-processing mode. Amazon’s Fire TV Soundbar Plus provides a Dialogue Enhancer and separate Movie, Music and Dialogue equalizer modes. Bose describes an AI Dialogue Mode that dynamically distinguishes speech from other sounds in the same frequency range and can be switched off when you prefer the original mix.
How to improve speech without ruining the mix
- Start with the dialogue or voice control. Enable it at its lowest useful setting while playing a familiar scene.
- Raise the center channel slightly. If your model provides a center-level control, increase it in small steps; on supported Samsung models the available range is -6 dB to +6 dB.
- Listen at your normal volume. A setting that sounds clear at whisper level may make voices unnaturally forward during ordinary viewing.
- Back off when voices become thin. Excessive enhancement can remove warmth, exaggerate sibilance or make effects seem disconnected from the dialogue.
- Recheck placement. Keep the bar’s front grille unobstructed and aim it toward the seating position. If a separate center speaker is present, do not cover it with a television stand or décor.
Names, adjustment ranges and whether dialogue can run at the same time as a surround effect are model-specific. If a control is unavailable, that is a design limitation rather than a fault.
Should I use Movie, Surround or Dialogue mode?
Use the least processed mode that gives you the balance you want. Movie mode generally applies a film-oriented equalizer or processing profile. Dialogue mode prioritizes speech frequencies or center-channel output. Surround and 3D modes widen or virtualize the sound field. They do not create discrete rear or height channels when the hardware and source lack them.
| Mode | What it changes | Best starting point | Potential trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard or Direct | Minimal processing; aims to preserve the incoming mix | Critical listening or a well-mixed disc | Speech may remain recessed in a difficult mix |
| Movie | Film-oriented EQ and spatial processing | Most cinematic soundtracks | Can make bass, effects or reverberation more prominent |
| Dialogue/Voice | Emphasizes speech frequencies or center output | Quiet voices or mixed-age viewers | Too much can sound thin or bright |
| Surround/3D | Widening, virtualization or upmixing | Two-channel programs or a larger-feeling room | May place sounds where the original mix did not |
Amazon documents Movie, Music and Dialogue EQ choices plus a separate Surround Effect toggle on its Fire TV soundbars. Sony documents 3D surround, post-processing selections and dynamic-range controls. Because implementations differ, compare modes with the same familiar scene and leave time for the change to settle before judging it.

- Film with a proper multichannel soundtrack: Begin with Standard or the least processed Movie setting, then add a small dialogue adjustment if needed.
- Older stereo television program: Try Surround or 3D to widen the presentation, but switch back if voices acquire an echo.
- Late-night viewing: Enable a night, dynamic-range or volume-leveling feature if your model has one. It reduces jumps between whispers and explosions, but also reduces the theatrical contrast.
- Music playback: Use Music or Standard rather than a speech-focused profile, which can remove body from vocals and instruments.
Why do I get stereo or PCM instead of Atmos?
First verify the content actually carries Atmos; many titles offer several audio tracks, and a standard stereo stream will not become Atmos through a menu setting. Then inspect the signal path: both ends of the TV-to-bar link must support eARC for high-bandwidth TV return, and the source must be configured for bitstream or passthrough.

- Confirm the cable runs between the labeled eARC/ARC ports.
- Set the TV’s digital-audio output to Pass-through, Bitstream or Auto when those options are available; “PCM” may limit the output.
- Enable eARC on both devices rather than leaving one on ARC-only.
- For a non-eARC TV, connect the Atmos source directly to a compatible soundbar HDMI input.
- Power-cycle the TV, source and soundbar after changing HDMI-control settings so they renegotiate.
If the bar still reports PCM or Stereo, test another known-compatible title and inspect each device’s manual. The indicator is useful evidence: it tells you what the bar receives, not merely what the app claims to offer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check when eARC keeps cutting out?
Intermittent audio usually points to the cable, HDMI-control negotiation or an unstable format path. Replace the cable with a known-good High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet, reseat both ends and remove unnecessary HDMI adapters or switches. Temporarily set the TV output to Auto and test with a lower-complexity soundtrack; if that is stable, add devices back one at a time.
Firmware updates can change HDMI behavior, but install them only through the manufacturer’s documented process. If the soundbar works when a player is connected directly yet fails through the TV, the television’s eARC implementation or settings are the likely bottleneck.

Compare the complete signal path rather than the logo on the box. The useful specifications are:
- eARC or ARC: eARC on both the TV and bar is required for the highest-bandwidth return formats.
- Dolby and DTS support: Check the exact formats, including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio if those are in your library.
- Dialogue controls: Look for a named voice feature and, ideally, an adjustable center channel.
- Speaker layout: Determine whether “Surround” is produced by real rear speakers or virtualization from the bar.
- HDMI inputs: Inputs on the bar provide a direct route for an Atmos source when the TV is ARC-only.
- Night or dynamic-range controls: These help with apartment or late-night listening but can reduce impact.
Read the manuals for the exact model, because a feature name does not guarantee the same processing, adjustment range or simultaneous-mode behavior across a manufacturer’s lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an optical cable replace HDMI eARC?
Optical audio does not provide HDMI’s eARC return channel or its bandwidth for lossless multichannel formats. It can be a fallback for basic stereo or compressed surround, but it will not carry the eARC feature set.
Will every streaming service send Dolby Atmos through my TV?
No. Atmos availability depends on the title, subscription tier, app, TV model and the audio-output settings. Confirm the soundtrack label in the app and check the soundbar’s received-format indicator rather than assuming every episode uses Atmos.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does a soundbar need rear speakers for real surround sound?
A bar can simulate width with virtualization, but discrete rear-channel playback requires rear speakers and a source mix containing those channels. A 3D or Surround button alone cannot add physical speakers that are not present.
Why does dialogue sound worse after I enable a voice mode?
Voice processing can overemphasize upper frequencies or center output, making speech thin or sharp. Lower the enhancement, return the center level toward its default and compare at normal listening volume before changing other settings.
