Its three-piece layout uses a dedicated centre speaker and two larger wireless left/right speakers with up-firing drivers. That arrangement creates a wider, more room-filling presentation than an all-in-one bar, while the centre channel gives dialogue a stable anchor. How does the Trio sound compared with a conventional flagship soundbar?
The Trio’s main advantage is scale: placing the left and right speakers apart from the television creates a naturally wider front stage than a single bar can usually produce from one cabinet. What Hi-Fi says the three-piece concept “proves brilliantly effective” for a premium lifestyle Atmos system. The physical separation gives effects more room to breathe, while the centre channel addresses a weakness found in some earlier separated-speaker designs. The trade-off is that the centre is less capable than the larger left and right speakers, so the front stage is not perfectly uniform when a soundtrack pans across it.
Is dialogue clear on the BRAVIA Theatre Trio?
Yes, the dedicated centre speaker is one of the Trio’s strongest reasons to exist. It is designed to sit below the screen and keep speech locked to the actors, rather than relying entirely on a soundbar’s phantom centre.
Sony’s help documentation lists two 45 × 108 mm cone drivers and a 25 mm soft-dome tweeter in the centre unit. Those drivers give the speaker a defined vocal channel, but What Hi-Fi notes that the centre cannot equal the larger flank speakers’ capability. In scenes with wide pans or dense orchestral material, the tonal character can change as sound moves between the centre and the side speakers.
Some competing systems are reported to sound cleaner and more detailed overall. The Trio’s appeal is therefore not absolute detail retrieval; it is the combination of anchored speech, broad scale and a less cluttered industrial design than a full receiver-and-speaker package.

How immersive are Dolby Atmos and DTS:X effects?

IMAX Enhanced certification becomes relevant only after compatible Rear 9 speakers and a Sub 9 have been added, according to the package review. The base Trio does not provide the full rear-speaker layout associated with that expanded configuration.
Where should you place the three speakers?
Place the centre speaker directly below the television and keep its front edge unobstructed. Position the two cylindrical units to the left and right of the screen, with their up-firing drivers able to project sound toward the ceiling. The wireless design gives you more freedom than a bar fixed under the TV, but each speaker still needs a stable surface, access to power and a clear acoustic path.
Placement checklist
- Keep the centre aligned with the middle of the display so voices remain attached to the picture.
- Use broadly symmetrical left and right positions; large differences in distance can weaken the phantom image.
- Do not cover the up-firing sections with shelves, décor or the television itself.
- Allow enough clearance around the side speakers for their cylindrical cabinets to radiate evenly.
- Run Sony’s speaker setup and mapping process after positioning, then repeat it if you move the units.
The package is better suited to a room that can accommodate two side speakers than to a narrow media cabinet. If your television is in a corner or the side positions are blocked, a single soundbar may be easier to integrate even if it produces a less expansive image.
