Verdict: The Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 and Rear 9 is worth buying when you want a genuinely cinematic, physical-surround system, have floor space for a 23 kg subwoofer, several mains outlets and a premium budget. Its 5.1.4 layout produces large, cohesive effects and powerful but controlled bass. It is a weaker choice for a compact room, primarily stereo music, or maximum value. Stereo imaging can become congested, the subwoofer is imposing, and there is no traditional front-panel display. Buyers should compare the Samsung HW-Q990H for broad value and Sony’s BRAVIA Theater Quad for a wider, smoother soundstage.

What is included in the Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 and Rear 9?

This configuration combines Sony’s three-piece BRAVIA Theater Trio front system with one BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 and two BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 speakers. What Hi-Fi identifies the complete arrangement as a 5.1.4-channel system: five main bed channels, one subwoofer channel and four height channels.

The Trio replaces a conventional single soundbar with three front speakers. A narrow center speaker handles dialogue, while larger cylindrical left and right units contain up-firing drivers for overhead effects. The two Rear 9 speakers provide physical surround channels rather than relying entirely on acoustic processing. The Sub 9 supplies the low-frequency channel.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are supported. What Hi-Fi reports that the expanded package is IMAX Enhanced certified when the rear speakers and subwoofer are added. Sony’s launch material describes the Trio as expandable with optional subwoofers and rear speakers.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How much power does the package claim?

What Hi-Fi lists claimed amplification of 405 W for the Trio, 180 W for the Rear 9 pair and 600 W for the Sub 9. That totals 1,185 W of claimed system power. These are manufacturer-style figures reported in the 2026 review, not independent laboratory power measurements, so they should not be compared with measured continuous output.

How does the system sound in films and games?

The full package’s strongest quality is scale. What Hi-Fi calls it a convenient wireless surround package that still provides proper surround sound. The up-firing drivers make Atmos mixes convincing when the room and ceiling cooperate, while the physical rear speakers create effects that do not have to be synthesized entirely from the front.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Hi-Fi specifically praised the matching between front and rear speakers: “Effects move seamlessly from front to rear, while the system maintains the same sense of cohesion that impressed us with the Trio on its own.” That cohesion matters during moving effects such as aircraft, vehicles or musical pans, because the tonal character does not change abruptly as a sound crosses the room.

What does the Sub 9 add?

The Sub 9 is described as delivering enormous weight when a soundtrack demands it, while staying controlled and tuneful during quieter passages. Explosions, low orchestral notes and science-fiction effects gain physical impact that a bar-only system cannot normally match.

There is a trade-off. RTINGS reports that the subwoofer can produce enough rumble and thump to overwhelm the mid-range on some material. The balance also changes with settings such as Sound Field and Movie theater acoustics. Plan to spend time calibrating rather than assuming the factory presentation will suit every room.

Are the rear speakers a major improvement?

Yes, if you watch surround-mixed films or play games that use directional effects. Rear 9 speakers make discrete side and rear movement more convincing than a front-only bar. Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping processing can also create phantom speakers around the room, adding apparent height or width where the physical layout does not place a speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing cannot remove room constraints. The rears need sensible placement and their own power sockets, and reflective surfaces, open-plan layouts or unusual seating positions can reduce the precision of the virtual image.

Is stereo music performance good enough?

It is acceptable for casual listening but not the package’s strongest case. RTINGS reports messy or congested stereo tracking, so instruments may not separate as cleanly as they do through a well-designed stereo system or a soundbar with a smoother front stage. Buyers whose main use is two-channel music should audition the system with familiar recordings.

Movie and game processing can alter the result substantially. Sound Field and Movie theater acoustics settings may improve spaciousness for a film but make a music mix less natural. The ability to change these modes is useful, but it means a single audition setting does not represent every use case.

Will it fit my room and furniture?

Room fit is the most important practical question. The Sub 9 is almost cube-shaped and measures approximately 40 x 39 x 35 cm according to What Hi-Fi; the same review also describes it as approximately 39 x 40 x 35 cm. It weighs 23 kg. Allow floor space for that footprint, clearance for its operation and a route for safely moving it into position. It is not a convenient behind-the-sofa accessory.

The front left and right speakers and the Rear 9 units can be wall-mounted with suitable brackets or hardware. The center speaker is low profile and includes spacer feet that can help with some television pedestal arrangements. Every unit communicates wirelessly with the others, but every unit still needs a mains connection. “Wireless” therefore removes signal cables, not power cables.

What should you check before ordering?

  • Measure a permanent floor location for the 23 kg Sub 9, including space to lift it in and remove it later.
  • Count available mains outlets near the television, front speakers, subwoofer and rear-speaker positions.
  • Check that wall surfaces and brackets are rated for the Rear 9 and front-speaker weights; the review does not provide a universal bracket specification.
  • Confirm that the television has HDMI eARC if you want the intended TV connection and return channel.
  • Confirm that the console and TV support the desired 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM signal path.

How do you connect and set up the Sony package?

Setup is straightforward in concept but deserves more planning than a one-piece soundbar. Use the following order to avoid moving the heavy subwoofer repeatedly.

  1. Plan positions and power. Place the center below or in front of the TV, the cylindrical left and right speakers at the front edges of the seating area, the Sub 9 on the floor and the Rear 9 speakers behind or beside the listening position. Identify a mains outlet for each unit.
  2. Connect the television. Run HDMI from the system’s eARC connection to the TV’s HDMI eARC port. Enable eARC and bitstream or passthrough audio in the television menu when those options are available.
  3. Connect source devices. The system has one HDMI input supporting 4K/120Hz, variable refresh rate and automatic low-latency mode. Connect a compatible console or player there when you need those features, and verify that the TV reports the expected signal.
  4. Power every speaker. The wireless link carries audio between units, but the front speakers, Sub 9 and Rear 9s each require mains power.
  5. Open the BRAVIA Connect app. Use the app to confirm operating status, incoming format and configuration. Because there is no traditional display, the app and status lights are the main feedback channels.
  6. Run the system’s calibration and listening checks. Confirm that the center produces dialogue, that each rear responds independently and that bass is present without masking voices. Try Sound Field and Movie theater acoustics with both a film and a music track.
  7. Test high-bandwidth sources. Play a 4K/120Hz game with VRR enabled and a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X title. If the TV drops to a lower refresh rate or reports PCM unexpectedly, check HDMI cable certification, TV settings and firmware before changing speaker positions.

Use a certified 4K/120Hz HDMI cable for the high-bandwidth input. Firmware and regional HDMI behavior can change, so verify the exact TV, console and software versions before purchase.

What connectivity and streaming features are included?

Published connectivity includes HDMI eARC for the television, one HDMI input with 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM support, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Streaming integrations listed by What Hi-Fi are Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect.

The system supports DTS as well as Dolby formats, which matters if you use physical-media players or older discs with DTS soundtracks. There is no voice-control feature listed in the review’s specification table. Sony’s BRAVIA Connect app handles status and control, but buyers who prefer a front-panel readout should understand that the package has no conventional display.

How much does the complete system cost?

What Hi-Fi lists the following 2026 launch prices. Regional taxes, exchange rates, stock and bundle promotions can change the amount, so treat these as dated launch references rather than a current universal price.

Component UK launch price US launch price Australia launch price
BRAVIA Theater Trio £1,999 $2,000 AU$2,999
BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 pair £699 $750 AU$1,299
BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 £899 $900 AU$1,299

Sony Electronics’ May 27, 2026 announcement lists a US suggested retail price of $2,199.99 for the Trio alone, which differs from the $2,000 launch figure reported by What Hi-Fi. Check the live regional listing and whether a retailer is selling a bundle before judging value. The full package costs substantially more than either the Trio or a conventional all-in-one bar because the rear speakers and subwoofer are separate purchases.

Is the Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio package good value against alternatives?

Value depends on what you prioritize. Sony charges for a modular wireless installation, a dedicated center channel, matching physical surrounds, strong bass and integration with compatible BRAVIA televisions. Those advantages are meaningful in a large room, but the price and space requirements are hard to justify if you mainly watch dialogue-led television or listen to stereo music.

Decision factor Trio + Sub 9 + Rear 9 Samsung HW-Q990H Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro
Surround and overhead effects Physical Rear 9 speakers, up-firing drivers and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping; 5.1.4 layout RTINGS positions it as stronger for most buyers on broad objective testing and sound-enhancement options Wider, smoother soundstage is the main in-family appeal 9.1.6 layout with more granular controls, according to RTINGS
Stereo imaging Can sound congested or messy in stereo tracking Better broad test performance, according to RTINGS Smoother and more expansive presentation More control-oriented design; direct stereo result depends on room and settings
Dialogue Dedicated center speaker gives clear dialogue focus Strong general-purpose feature and performance set No dedicated center-channel advantage over the Trio More channels and controls, but no stated center-channel comparison in the supplied testing
Bass Sub 9 delivers very deep, controlled weight but can overpower mid-range on some content Broad-value alternative; exact bass result varies by test and room Designed around a different soundstage priority More channels; no directly comparable bass measurement is established here
Installation Large 23 kg subwoofer, several power outlets and careful placement Compare total package size and current bundle pricing Choose when smooth width matters more than the Trio’s center More granular adjustment can reward users willing to configure it

When is Samsung HW-Q990H the better buy?

RTINGS recommends the HW-Q990H for most people’s home soundbar needs based on broader objective testing, sound-enhancement options and performance across many tests. Choose it when value and an easier all-round recommendation matter more than Sony-specific BRAVIA integration. Sony remains attractive if you need HDMI passthrough, DTS support or BRAVIA Connect and Voice Zoom 3 features with a compatible BRAVIA TV.

When should you choose BRAVIA Theater Quad instead?

The Theater Quad is the closer Sony alternative when a wide, smooth soundstage matters more than a dedicated center channel. The Trio’s separate center can make dialogue placement appealing, while the Quad’s design may sound more seamless across a broad front stage. That is a preference and room decision, not a universal quality ranking.

Where does LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro fit?

RTINGS describes LG’s system as a 9.1.6 layout with more granular controls. It is relevant if you enjoy detailed adjustment and want more nominal channels. The Sony package is simpler to understand: a 5.1.4 arrangement with a distinct center, physical rears and a large dedicated subwoofer.

Which Sony accessories and expansions are compatible?

Sony’s SA-SW9 compatibility listing includes the Sub 9 with BRAVIA Theater Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, Quad and several HT-A models. Sony’s SA-RS9 listing includes the Rear 9 with Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000. These compatibility lists make the Sub 9 and Rear 9 sensible upgrade candidates for owners of those systems, but always confirm the current regional listing before ordering.

Practical accessories are less glamorous but more important: a certified 4K/120Hz HDMI cable, correctly rated wall-mount hardware for the front or rear speakers and sturdy furniture or clear floor space for the 23 kg Sub 9. Do not assume a generic bracket fits; verify dimensions, load rating and the speaker’s mounting method.

What are the main drawbacks and how can you reduce them?

The subwoofer is too large for the room

Measure first, then select a permanent floor position. If the only possible location blocks a walkway, sits inside a cabinet or cannot support safe handling, the package is a poor fit regardless of its sound quality.

Bass masks voices

Try a less aggressive sound mode, reduce subwoofer level and recheck the center channel with dialogue-heavy material. Room placement can also change the perceived bass balance, so test more than one safe location.

Stereo music sounds congested

Use a direct or music-oriented mode, disable unnecessary spatial processing and audition familiar recordings. If separation remains unsatisfying, a stereo-focused system or the smoother Theater Quad may suit your listening better.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

It is difficult to confirm the incoming format

Use BRAVIA Connect and the status lights because there is no traditional display. Check the TV’s eARC, passthrough and source settings, then test with a known Atmos or DTS:X title.

Wireless setup still creates cable clutter

Draw the power plan before installation. Each speaker needs mains power, so rear outlets and front-speaker cable routes remain part of the room design.

Who should buy the Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 and Rear 9?

  • Buy it if you have a large enough room, want physical rear effects, value a dedicated center channel and can accommodate the Sub 9 and multiple outlets.
  • Buy it for a BRAVIA TV if BRAVIA Connect, Voice Zoom 3 integration and Sony’s ecosystem controls are more useful to you than the broadest value score.
  • Compare first if you want the best general-purpose value, because RTINGS rates Samsung HW-Q990H more favorably for most buyers overall.
  • Choose another Sony layout if smooth, expansive stereo imaging is more important than the Trio’s center-channel focus; the BRAVIA Theater Quad is the logical in-family comparison.
  • Skip it if your room is compact, you cannot place a 23 kg subwoofer safely, or most listening is stereo music.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 and Rear 9 delivers the cinematic scale its premium price suggests, but only when the room, power layout and listener priorities align. Treat the Sub 9’s footprint, the app-based status feedback and the stereo-imaging limitation as purchase criteria rather than minor details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the BRAVIA Theater Trio operate without the Sub 9 and Rear 9?

Yes. The Trio is sold as a front system and Sony describes it as expandable with optional subwoofers and rear speakers. The review’s surround, bass and IMAX Enhanced observations apply to the expanded configuration, not to every Trio-only setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the package include wall-mount brackets for every speaker?

The front and Rear 9 speakers can be wall-mounted with suitable hardware, but a universal bracket or included hardware specification is not established. Check the box contents and the mounting-load requirements for your region before drilling.

Can I use the HDMI input for a 4K/120Hz console and still use eARC?

The published specification provides one HDMI input with 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM, plus a separate HDMI eARC connection for the TV. Confirm the TV’s eARC port, cable certification and console handshake because firmware and regional behavior can affect the result.

Is the 1,185 W figure measured continuous output?

No. It is the sum of claimed Trio, Rear 9 pair and Sub 9 amplification figures reported by What Hi-Fi in 2026. The available data does not establish an independent continuous-power measurement.

Does the system have built-in voice control?

No voice-control feature is listed in the reviewed specification table. Control and format feedback are provided through the BRAVIA Connect app, remote controls and status lights.
