The Sony a6400 is still a compelling compact camera if you want dependable subject tracking, detailed 24.2-megapixel stills and access to Sony’s broad E-mount lens catalog. Its drawbacks matter most for video: there is no in-body stabilization, internal recording is 8-bit, and quick movement can produce rolling-shutter distortion. It suits travel and everyday photography particularly well; vloggers can use it successfully for static or lightly moving shots, but handheld walking video takes extra support and care.

What does the Sony a6400 do best?

The a6400’s strongest case is the combination of autofocus, image quality and a compact interchangeable-lens body. It is an APS-C camera with a 23.5 × 15.6 mm Exmor CMOS sensor and approximately 24.2 effective megapixels. Sony lists the body at about 403 g with a battery and memory card installed. Those specifications make it a practical travel or everyday camera without locking the owner into a fixed lens.

Its autofocus is the standout feature. Sony lists 425 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection AF points, alongside Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking. In its 2024 review, RTINGS found excellent tracking and strong photo quality. The result is a camera that can keep up with many moving subjects more confidently than its menus and controls might initially suggest.

The other major benefit is the E-mount system. A buyer can begin with a small kit zoom, then choose lenses around a particular need—such as a portrait prime, a longer telephoto or an optically stabilized lens for video. The total value depends on the lens and accessories in the kit, not just the body price.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is the Sony a6400 still worth buying?

Yes, if still photography, portable size and tracking autofocus matter more to you than stabilized, highly gradeable video. It is less attractive if your priority is handheld walking footage, 10-bit internal recording, uncropped 4K at higher frame rates or a simple, intuitive operating experience.

For travel, family, street and general-purpose photography, the a6400’s sensor resolution, tracking and lens flexibility form a useful package. Sony’s current specifications list the camera’s sensor and AF system; RTINGS’ 2024 assessment reports strong real-world tracking and photo quality. DPReview’s 2019 review described it as broadly capable, with detailed 4K, good battery life and better resistance to overheating than its predecessor. That last assessment is useful context, but it does not mean long 4K recording sessions are immune to heat: RTINGS notes possible overheating during extended sessions.

There is no current price figure established here, and used-market prices vary with condition, location, and whether a lens or accessories are included. When weighing a deal, compare complete kits: a seemingly inexpensive body may still need a suitable lens, spare battery, memory card, and video support.

How good is the a6400’s autofocus?

Autofocus is the camera’s clearest strength. Sony’s specifications list 425 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection points, and RTINGS found excellent subject tracking and particularly strong center-point autofocus in testing.

Sony says the Alpha 6400 offers “the world’s fastest AF at 0.02 seconds” and describes Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking. Treat 0.02 seconds as Sony’s manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that every subject, lens, lighting condition or focus transition will be acquired in that time. In practice, the combination of tracking features and the hybrid AF system is the more useful reason to consider the camera.

Autofocus performance still depends on how the camera is set up and what you are photographing. Select an AF-area mode suited to the subject rather than expecting one setting to cover everything. For a subject that moves through the frame, tracking is the relevant capability; for a static subject, a more controlled focus area can help you place focus where you intend. The controls and menus take learning, so allow time to configure the camera before an important shoot.

How does it handle action and everyday shooting?

RTINGS lists continuous shooting at up to 11 frames per second, giving the camera a useful burst option for children, pets, street moments and moderate action. That speed is most valuable when paired with the tracking system: a burst gives you several expressions or positions to choose from, while subject tracking helps keep the active subject in focus. It is not a substitute for choosing a suitable shutter speed, anticipating movement or selecting an AF-area mode that does not jump to the background.

For travel, the relatively low 403 g ready-to-shoot weight is easy to carry for a full day, and the APS-C sensor provides more flexibility than a phone or fixed-lens compact when light falls or a distant subject appears. A small zoom keeps the kit discreet. A telephoto makes the system more capable for wildlife or sports, but adds size and may make the compact-body advantage less pronounced. The camera’s value is therefore partly about matching the lens to the way you actually travel.

How good are its photos?

The 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor produces detailed still images, and RTINGS rates the camera well for photo quality and travel use. The sensor size, resolution and interchangeable-lens mount give the a6400 room to serve different photographic needs: a compact zoom can cover everyday scenes, while a purpose-chosen prime or telephoto can better suit portraits, low-light work or distant subjects.

Those benefits do not eliminate the usual trade-offs of a compact body. Your results depend on the lens, light, focus choice and exposure technique, not just the camera body. For example, the camera has no in-body image stabilization, so a lens with optical stabilization or a stable shooting position becomes more important when using slower shutter speeds. For action, the strong tracking system is an advantage, but choosing an appropriate AF-area mode remains part of getting a sharp frame.

No numerical dynamic-range measurement or head-to-head image-quality result against a specific newer camera is established here. It is therefore more useful to judge the a6400 by its demonstrated strengths—detailed stills and reliable tracking—than to infer a ranking it has not been tested against here.

Is the a6400 good for video and vlogging?

It can be a capable video camera for a creator who plans around its limits. Sony says it records internal 4K up to 30p with full-pixel readout and oversampling from roughly 6K; it also records 1080p slow motion up to 120 fps. DPReview noted that the flip-up screen is useful for vlogging, and the camera has no formal recording-time limit. However, a hot-shoe microphone or another accessory mounted above the camera can obstruct that upward-flipping display.

Several limitations shape the footage and the way you shoot:

  • No in-body stabilization: the camera cannot stabilize footage by moving its sensor. For handheld video, use an optically stabilized lens where appropriate, a tripod or gimbal, or careful technique.
  • Rolling shutter: fast pans and lateral movement can make vertical lines appear skewed. Move the camera more slowly when straight edges matter.
  • 8-bit internal recording: RTINGS reports internal 4K at 8-bit 4:2:0. This gives less grading latitude than 10-bit footage, so avoid expecting aggressive color correction to hold up as well as it might on a camera with higher-bit-depth recording.
  • 4K at 30p has a crop: the framing is tighter at the top 4K frame rate, so a lens that seems wide enough for a static shot may not give the same view in that mode.
  • Long-session heat: DPReview reported improved overheating resistance compared with the predecessor, while RTINGS notes possible overheating during long 4K sessions. A lack of a formal recording-time limit is not a promise that a camera can record indefinitely without interruption.

These trade-offs make the a6400 a more natural fit for tripod-based interviews, product clips, controlled talking-head shots and lightly moving scenes than for unstabilized walking footage. If your workflow depends on extensive color grading, high-frame-rate 4K or very fluid handheld motion, compare newer bodies that address those particular needs before choosing.

Does the Sony a6400 have image stabilization?

No: the a6400 has no in-body image stabilization. That affects both handheld video and still photography at slower shutter speeds, although the impact depends on the lens and how you shoot.

For video, an optically stabilized lens can help with some camera movement, but it is not the same as stabilization built into the body. A tripod is a straightforward choice for locked-off shots; a gimbal can help when moving with the camera. For stills, use a stabilized lens where available, brace the camera carefully, or choose a faster shutter speed when the scene or subject demands it.

When choosing a lens, check whether the particular lens includes optical stabilization rather than assuming every E-mount lens does. Stabilization also does not freeze a moving subject; autofocus tracking and an appropriate shutter speed remain important when photographing action.

Which lenses and accessories make sense?

The camera accepts Sony E-mount lenses, so buyers can tailor a kit instead of treating the included lens—if there is one—as the only option. A useful choice starts with the kind of photographs or footage you actually make.

  • Travel and everyday use: a compact kit zoom is a practical starting point when you want flexibility without carrying several lenses.
  • Portraits: consider a portrait-oriented prime or telephoto lens when subject separation or a narrower field of view matters more than one-lens convenience.
  • Low light: a suitable prime can be a better fit when you need more light than a compact zoom provides. The right choice depends on the framing you use.
  • Video: give optical stabilization priority if you expect to film handheld. It can help, but it does not remove the need for careful movement or support.

The a6400 uses an NP-FW50 battery and removable SD storage. For travel or a long day away from charging, carrying a spare NP-FW50 is sensible. Check the current card speed requirements for your selected recording mode before buying a card; do not assume every SD card is suitable for every video setting.

Also plan the physical setup if you vlog. An accessory in the hot shoe may interfere with viewing the flip-up screen. Decide how you will position a microphone or other equipment before relying on the screen to frame yourself.

How should a new owner set it up?

Start by deciding whether stills or video is the priority, then build the setup around that choice. For stills, test the tracking mode on the subjects you normally photograph and assign frequently used focus or drive controls to custom buttons where possible. For video, choose the lens before judging the camera’s field of view, because the 4K 30p crop changes how wide a scene appears. Record a short test at the intended resolution and frame rate, checking focus, sound, screen visibility and heat rather than discovering a limitation during a paid or once-only shoot.

What is difficult about using the a6400?

The camera can produce strong results, but its operating experience is less welcoming than its autofocus. RTINGS finds its controls and menus less intuitive than ideal. A new owner should expect to spend time learning where frequently used options live and configuring custom buttons, rather than assuming the default setup will be comfortable for every shooting style.

Its video limitations also require deliberate choices: stabilization has to come from the lens or external support, fast pans can reveal rolling shutter, and 8-bit recording leaves less room for substantial grading. The flip-up screen is useful for self-recording but can conflict with a hot-shoe accessory. None of these makes a shot impossible; together, they mean that video results depend more on the kit and setup than a beginner might expect.

How should it be compared with newer cameras?

Do not compare bodies on megapixels or headline autofocus speed alone. For a stills buyer, compare tracking consistency, sensor performance, burst behavior, battery endurance, screen articulation and the size and price of the lenses you would actually carry. For a video buyer, compare stabilization method, 4K frame rates, bit depth, crop, rolling shutter and heat behavior. Menu ergonomics matter too: a camera that is technically faster can still slow down a creator who spends every session searching through settings.

Include the total kit in the comparison. A body-only bargain may require an optically stabilized lens, spare NP-FW50 battery, suitable SDXC card, microphone arrangement and tripod or gimbal. Conversely, a kit that costs more initially may already include the items needed to shoot. Prices change by region, condition and bundle, so calculate the package you can use rather than relying on a body-only listing.

Who should buy the Sony a6400?

Choose it if you want a compact APS-C camera for stills, value reliable subject tracking, and want to build a system around interchangeable E-mount lenses. It is especially plausible for travel, family, street and moderate action photography, as well as creators filming mostly stationary scenes who are willing to add support or choose an optically stabilized lens.

Look elsewhere if your central requirement is stabilized walking video, 10-bit internal footage, uncropped high-frame-rate 4K or a particularly straightforward menu system. In those cases, compare newer cameras on the features that matter to your workflow—not on body price alone. Include the cost and bulk of any needed stabilized lens, battery, card, microphone arrangement and support in that comparison.

What should you check before buying a used or kit a6400?

Since a current price benchmark is not established, evaluate the particular offer and what it includes. A body-only listing and a ready-to-shoot kit are not equivalent; the lens, battery, storage and condition change the practical value.

  • Confirm whether the listing is body-only or includes a lens, and identify the lens rather than assuming it is stabilized.
  • Check that the included battery is an NP-FW50 and consider whether you need a spare for your intended use.
  • Identify the included SD card and verify that it meets the current requirements for the recording mode you plan to use.
  • If you intend to vlog, check how the flip-up screen will work with any hot-shoe accessory in your setup.
  • For a video-heavy workflow, consider whether the lack of in-body stabilization, internal 8-bit recording and rolling shutter are acceptable before committing to a low body price.
  • Ask whether the package includes the charger, because replacing missing essentials changes the real cost even when the camera body appears inexpensive.

These checks do not substitute for inspecting a used camera’s physical and functional condition in person. They help ensure the package addresses the practical needs of the a6400 rather than only its headline body specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sony’s 0.02-second autofocus speed guaranteed in every situation?

No. Sony presents 0.02 seconds as its product-page autofocus claim; it should not be read as a universal result for every lens, subject, lighting condition or focusing transition. The more durable buying consideration is the camera’s hybrid AF point coverage and the tracking performance reported by RTINGS.

Can the a6400 record 4K video without a time limit?

The camera has no formal recording-time limit, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted recording in every condition. RTINGS reports that overheating is possible during long 4K sessions, so an extended recording should be tested in the intended setup rather than assumed to run indefinitely.

Will a microphone block the a6400’s screen when I vlog?

It can: an accessory mounted in the hot shoe may obstruct the screen when it flips upward. Check the camera’s viewing angle with your intended accessory arrangement before a shoot where you need to monitor yourself.

Does the a6400 include image stabilization?

No. There is no in-body image stabilization, so handheld video and slow-shutter stills rely on an optically stabilized lens, careful technique or external support such as a tripod or gimbal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What battery and memory card does the a6400 use?

It uses the NP-FW50 battery and removable SD storage. Carrying a spare battery is sensible for travel, and you should verify the current card-speed requirement for the exact recording mode you plan to use.

Is the a6400 suitable for walking vlogs?

It can work, but it is not an effortless choice. Use an optically stabilized lens and deliberate movement or external support, and remember that rolling shutter, the 4K 30p crop and 8-bit recording remain. Static or lightly moving scenes are a better fit.

Does the a6400 shoot fast action?

RTINGS lists continuous shooting at up to 11 frames per second, while the hybrid tracking system helps maintain focus on moving subjects. Results still depend on shutter speed, light, lens choice and selecting an AF-area mode appropriate to the subject.

The Bottom Line

The Sony a6400 remains a strong compact stills camera because its 24.2MP sensor, excellent tracking autofocus and E-mount lens choice travel well. Buy it for those strengths and budget for the lens, battery, card and support your workflow needs. Choose a newer body instead if stabilized handheld video, 10-bit recording or simpler operation is the priority.
