If Sonos surround sound is missing, quiet, delayed, or distorted, first check the TV’s audio format and the room’s TV Level setting; then adjust for timing or retune Trueplay if placement or room sound has changed. A Stereo/PCM signal carries only two channels, so quiet rear speakers do not necessarily mean they are broken. If one surround remains silent after the signal, settings, and tuning checks, a speaker, pairing, or network fault may need model-specific diagnosis from Sonos Support.
What should I check first when Sonos rear speakers are not working?
Start with a known multichannel TV program or other source, confirm the surrounds appear in the Sonos system, and check the room’s surround level. Then verify the incoming audio format. This order helps distinguish a quiet or absent surround mix from a connection or hardware problem.

- Play a known multichannel TV source. A two-channel program may provide little distinct sound for the rear speakers, so it is a poor test of whether the surround setup is working.
- Open the home-theater room in the Sonos app. Confirm that the surround speakers appear in the system and that you are adjusting the room with the home-theater product, not a different Sonos room.
- Raise TV Level. In the Sonos app, open the room and go to Sound > Surround Audio, then adjust TV Level. In the S1 app, use Settings > System > [room] > Surround Audio.
- Check the audio format reported by Sonos. If it is Stereo/PCM, test the TV’s digital output setting and, where supported and appropriate, select Dolby Digital or another supported multichannel format.
TV and source-device menus use different names depending on the model. Look in the television’s sound or digital audio output settings and consult its manual for the exact label. If a cable box, streaming player, game console, or disc player feeds the TV, check its audio-output settings too.
Why are Sonos surrounds quiet even though they are connected?
A low rear level can be caused by the TV’s output format or the program’s audio mix, not just by the speaker level. Stereo/PCM is two-channel audio; Sonos may infer rear content from it, and the surrounds can sound quiet compared with a discrete multichannel mix.

Adjust the level for TV audio
Use TV Level under Sound > Surround Audio to change the relative volume of the surrounds during TV playback. In S1, the path is Settings > System > room > Surround Audio. Test at a normal listening volume with a familiar multichannel source, rather than relying only on a stereo music track or a scene with little activity in the rear channels.
Check whether the TV is sending multichannel audio
Look at the format Sonos reports while TV audio is playing. If the signal is Stereo/PCM, check whether the TV can output Dolby Digital or another multichannel format supported by the Sonos home-theater product. The correct setting depends on the television, source device, and Sonos model, so do not assume every device supports every format or uses the same menu wording.
Changing the TV output to a supported multichannel format can allow discrete rear-channel audio to reach the system. If the format is already suitable and only one surround is silent, continue with placement and Trueplay checks; if those do not help, the problem may require a hardware, pairing, or network diagnosis.
How do I fix Sonos surround audio that is delayed?
Audio that trails the picture often points to processing in the TV or an external source device. Reboot the TV and source, review their audio-output settings, and disable extra audio processing; if the sound leads the picture instead, add a small amount of delay with TV Dialog Sync.
When sound comes after the picture
- Reboot the TV and the device providing the audio, such as a streaming player, cable box, game console, or disc player.
- Review the audio-output format on both the TV and the external source. Try disabling additional audio processing on either device, following its model-specific instructions.
- If the delay persists, test Stereo/PCM as an audio-output format. Sonos notes that this can remove processing delay, but it disables surround sound. Treat it as a diagnostic or a trade-off, not as a way to keep multichannel rear audio while eliminating delay.
When sound comes before the picture
Open TV Dialog Sync in the Sonos app and move the slider to the right until sound and picture appear aligned. Make a small adjustment and check the result with the same program; the control adds audio delay, so it is intended for sound that is ahead, not sound that already trails the video.

What does “unsupported audio” mean on Sonos?
The message means the TV or source is sending an audio format that the Sonos product cannot understand. Change the TV’s Digital Audio Format or Audio Output to a supported home-theater format, and check the source device’s output as well.
Check each device in the signal chain: the television and, when used, the cable box, streaming player, game console, or disc player. A source can send a format the TV or Sonos system cannot pass through or decode, even if another device in the setup supports it.
Disc audio and DTS
Some Blu-ray DTS audio may need to be transcoded to Dolby Digital 5.1 for playback. This is especially relevant for S1 systems. If DTS playback matters to your setup, consider updating to the latest Sonos app available for your system and check the player’s audio options for a compatible output or transcoding setting. The exact option depends on the disc player; do not assume every Blu-ray player offers the same controls.
After changing a format, play the same source again and check the format Sonos reports. That confirms whether the setting change altered the signal reaching the system.
Can Trueplay fix distorted or uneven rear audio?
Trueplay measures how sound reflects from walls, furnishings, and other surfaces, then fine-tunes the speaker for the room. It can help when room acoustics or speaker placement have changed, but a tuning pass should not be treated as a substitute for checking the incoming format or speaker connection.

- Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
- The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
- Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.

When to retune
Run Trueplay after moving speakers or changing the setup, or when the room’s sound is noticeably uneven. Sonos supports Trueplay in surround home-theater configurations and lists Era 100 among products with Trueplay options. Check that your particular speakers and app setup offer the feature before relying on it.
How to get a useful measurement
- Choose a quiet time and minimize talking and appliance noise during the measurement.
- Cover the listening area rather than measuring only beside one speaker.
- Move the iOS device smoothly from head to waist as you follow the app’s instructions.
- Do not change the volume while the measurement is in progress.
If the result sounds worse, retune carefully, adjust EQ, or turn Trueplay off for comparison. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the tuning or another adjustment improved the sound. If distortion remains, the available tuning guidance does not establish its cause; check the signal and settings, then seek model-specific support rather than assuming Trueplay can correct every fault.
What if only one Sonos surround speaker is silent?
If the app shows the surround pair, the TV is sending a supported multichannel signal, timing settings are appropriate, and careful retuning has not restored one channel, the remaining possibilities include a speaker, pairing, or network fault. The audio-format and tuning checks alone cannot diagnose which one it is.
- Confirm the silent speaker still appears as part of the home-theater room in the Sonos app.
- Repeat the check with a known multichannel TV source and verify the format Sonos reports.
- Confirm that TV Level and any relevant timing control have not been set in a way that makes the symptom harder to assess.
- If the speaker remains silent, contact Sonos Support for diagnostics specific to the home-theater product, surround model, and app generation.
Do not assume that buying another speaker will resolve a pairing or network issue. If you are considering a replacement or an additional speaker, first verify compatibility with the existing home-theater product and app generation, whether the setup requires one speaker or a matched surround pair, and the placement and power requirements for the room.

How should I choose a replacement or additional surround speaker?
Compatibility with the existing Sonos home-theater product and app generation matters more than picking a speaker by name alone. Check the setup requirements before buying, especially if you intend to replace only one speaker.
