Should I use software rendering or OpenGL?
Software rendering is the compatibility-first choice; OpenGL is an image-quality experiment to try only after the game is responsive. melonDS states that OpenGL can upscale the 3D image but may cause visual problems, while software rendering prioritizes accuracy (melonDS FAQ).
Software 3D

Microphone options
melonDS exposes physical-microphone, white-noise and WAV-input choices, while the DeSmuME Libretro core documents noise options. Select the mode your computer can actually provide, but do not buy a microphone or expect a microphone change to cure the tutorial freeze.
Why does Sonic Chronicles freeze in the tutorial?
The documented failure is a timing-sensitive freeze during early tutorial content, including the POW actions sequence and tutorial videos. It is not established as a graphics-resolution problem.
melonDS issue #359, titled “Sonic Chronicles – The Dark Brotherhood (Europe) freezes up on the first stage,” records a reproduction still reported in melonDS 1.1 on January 29, 2026. On March 14, a contributor first described commit b01b420 as a fix, then reported that the game froze farther along. The maintainer continued investigating script loading and ARM9/cache timing; project member Arisotura summarized the direction as, “I’m thinking this requires data cache emulation.” Read the live issue at GitHub issue #359 before assuming a later build has solved it.
Consequently, do not advertise b01b420 as a complete fix, and do not describe melonDS 1.1 as having a proven uninterrupted playthrough. A resolution change cannot be presented as a repair for ARM9 timing.
What is the documented tutorial workaround?
RetroAchievements achievement-set developer DoctorV reports two troublesome tutorial videos and supplies separate melonDS and DeSmuME save files that bypass the affected area. The workaround can get you past the freeze, but it also skips the associated early content, so it is a progress compromise rather than a settings fix.

- Copy that save to a clearly named backup outside the emulator’s save folder.
- Read DoctorV’s notes and download only the save format matching your emulator at the RetroAchievements forum thread.
- Keep the original backup untouched, then place the workaround save where your emulator expects cartridge saves.
- Launch the game and confirm the expected progress before deleting anything.
Save states are not a substitute for cartridge saves. melonDS can separate regular save files when save states are used, and the DeSmuME Libretro documentation treats cartridge saves and states as distinct files. File naming and conversion are not guaranteed to be effortless between emulators, so preserve both the original and workaround copies.
What DeSmuME settings should I try?
Be precise about which DeSmuME you mean: the available documentation covers the DeSmuME Libretro core, not every standalone DeSmuME build. Its controls provide useful compatibility trade-offs, but they do not establish a cure for Sonic Chronicles’ freeze.
Interpreter versus JIT
Libretro’s documentation says, “Interpreter has better compatibility than JIT Dynamic Recompiler.” Interpreter is therefore the sensible diagnostic choice when a JIT run freezes or behaves oddly, but the same documentation warns that it is much slower. If Interpreter becomes impractical, return to JIT only after recording whether the game reaches the same point.
Advanced bus timing
Advanced bus-timing options may improve some games. They are worth a controlled experiment—one change at a time—but no source establishes that they eliminate the Sonic Chronicles tutorial freeze.

DoctorV recommends melonDS for the achievement set while reporting DeSmuME audio glitches. That recommendation is specific to the documented achievement-set experience, not a measured universal ranking. Original hardware avoids emulator-specific graphics and timing settings, but a used cartridge or console still needs to be in working condition.

- Reproduce the tutorial once. Note the exact action or video where the freeze occurs rather than changing several settings blindly.

Changing internal resolution belongs after these steps. The public 8× OpenGL profile at Zorvala is explicitly labelled “Set up, not yet played,” so it is a picture preference, not evidence of Sonic Chronicles stability.
Is there a Chapter 5 emulator setting?
No emulator switch is established for the reported Chapter 5 softlock. In his achievement-set notes, DoctorV advises putting Shadow in Tails’ party and selecting Shadow for the anti-aircraft-cannon sequence to avoid a reported softlock. When is original hardware the better choice?
Choose the original Nintendo DS route when you need the tutorial and cannot accept a workaround that skips content, or when software and interpreter experiments leave the freeze unresolved.
