“Legendary hunter” is a descriptive phrase, not a verified official rank in Solo Leveling. The character readers usually mean is Sung Jinwoo. He begins as an E-rank hunter, becomes a Player after the hidden double dungeon, is later reassessed as an S-rank hunter, and eventually is revealed as the Shadow Monarch. Those labels describe different stages and systems, not three interchangeable grades. This guide separates the anime-stage facts from later comic and novel revelations, so you can follow Jinwoo’s progression without treating “legendary” as a canon letter grade.

Is “legendary hunter” an official Solo Leveling rank?
No. The official English publisher descriptions and anime materials consulted identify Jinwoo by administrative grades such as E-rank and S-rank, and later by the supernatural title Shadow Monarch. They do not verify “Legendary Hunter” as a formal hunter classification or a unique, canon epithet. It is safest to read the phrase as promotional or descriptive wording for Jinwoo’s extraordinary rise, not as a tier above S-rank.
That distinction matters because Solo Leveling uses several overlapping vocabularies. The Hunter Association’s letter grade describes a hunter’s measured power. “Player” describes Jinwoo’s access to a progression system. “Shadow Monarch” identifies the later source and identity behind his abilities. Calling all three “ranks” makes the story harder to follow.

How does Sung Jinwoo’s rank change from E-rank to S-rank?
Jinwoo’s publicly recognized path is E-rank hunter, hidden-dungeon Player, then reassessed S-rank hunter. The anime and Yen Press descriptions support that sequence, while the later Shadow Monarch revelation belongs to the story’s deeper lore rather than to the Association’s grading system.
| Story stage | What the official descriptions establish | What the label means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginning | Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter | His initial, very low Hunter Association classification |
| After the hidden double dungeon | He becomes a Player | He can progress through a system unlike ordinary awakened hunters |
| Anime reassessment | He is identified as an S-rank hunter | A new administrative measurement after his power changes |
| Later print-story identity | He is the Shadow Monarch | A supernatural role and source of power, not an Association grade |
Why E-rank is important
The first novel presents Jinwoo as an E-rank hunter who enters the hidden double dungeon. E-rank is not a secret version of S-rank or evidence that the Association simply misfiled him. It reflects the ability level he had when the story began and explains why other hunters regard him as unusually vulnerable.
His repeated injuries and narrow survival margins establish the normal rule of the setting: awakening gives a hunter power, but that power generally does not continue to increase. Jinwoo’s later growth is exceptional precisely because it breaks that rule.
What happens in the double dungeon?
The hidden double dungeon is the turning point. After its events, Jinwoo is selected as a Player and gains access to a system that presents tasks, rewards and measurable progression. The important editorial point is not a particular statistic or interface screen; it is that Jinwoo can now become stronger over time, while ordinary hunters are normally treated as fixed after awakening.
What does “the 10th S-rank Hunter” mean?
The official anime labels episode 19 “The 10th S-rank Hunter.” In context, “10th” refers to the number of S-rank hunters recognized in that setting, not Jinwoo’s position in a power leaderboard. It does not mean he is the tenth-strongest S-rank, nor does it establish a worldwide numerical ranking.
Yen Press’s description of the later Jeju Island stage calls Jinwoo Korea’s strongest S-rank hunter. That is a statement about his standing at that point in the Korean hunter world, not proof of an official grade above S-rank. For a print edition covering this phase, see Solo Leveling, Vol. 8 (comic); it is a comic edition, not the eighth novel.
Why can Jinwoo level up when other hunters usually cannot?
Jinwoo’s leveling ability is the central mechanical difference between him and ordinary hunters. The official anime description explains that awakened hunters normally cannot grow their abilities, whereas Jinwoo can increase his level through the Player system. This is why his initial E-rank assessment does not predict his later strength.

The system changes his decision-making as much as his combat power. A conventional hunter must choose missions within a fixed capability range and rely on a team, equipment or stronger allies when a gate exceeds that range. Jinwoo can accept risk in pursuit of progression, recover from setbacks through rewards and training, and eventually field abilities that no ordinary reassessment process could have forecast.
It is still misleading to describe leveling as an alternate Hunter Association grade. The Association does not issue a “level” rank that sits between E and S. Leveling is Jinwoo’s private progression mechanism; S-rank is the later public classification applied when his measurable power is reassessed.
What are Jinwoo’s defining powers?
Two ideas explain most of Jinwoo’s power arc: continuous growth and command of shadows. The first explains how he surpasses the fixed-awakening rule; the second becomes the visible signature of his later identity.
Level-based growth
The Player system lets Jinwoo improve rather than remain locked at his awakening potential. The official descriptions establish the existence and importance of this growth, but they do not provide a complete, stable stat table for every story point. Exact totals, cooldowns or a definitive ranking of every skill should therefore be treated cautiously unless tied to a specific canonical passage.
Shadow soldiers
Jinwoo’s most recognizable supernatural ability is commanding shadow soldiers. He can turn the battlefield into an extension of his own force, using a growing army rather than relying solely on a conventional party. Yen Press describes him fighting with a shadow army as the new Shadow Monarch, which connects the ability to the later lore without turning “shadow soldier commander” into a Hunter Association title.
Descriptions of individual soldiers can differ by adaptation, translation and point in the story. A responsible summary can explain the army’s strategic importance without presenting an unsourced complete roster, exact headcount or invented power chart.

The later lore broadens the story from dungeon survival to a war that threatens Earth. Yen Press’s description for Solo Leveling, Vol. 10 introduces the conflict involving the Monarchs and the Rulers. These are not new Hunter Association grades; they are higher-order factions in the cosmology behind the gates, monsters and extraordinary powers.
By Vol. 12, the narrative points Jinwoo toward the true source of his abilities and toward direct confrontations with Monarchs. The publisher’s description frames this as a revelation about what he has become, not merely another reassessment appointment. The comic edition is Solo Leveling, Vol. 12 (comic), paperback ISBN 9798400902574.
Later material identifies Jinwoo as the Shadow Monarch and places him at the center of the struggle over humanity’s fate. Yen Press describes the new Shadow Monarch wielding a shadow army, while its novel copy states: The fate of humanity lies in the hands of the newly crowned Shadow Monarch, Jinwoo Sung.
That sentence is late-story material; it should not be used to describe Jinwoo’s status at the beginning of the anime.
The key continuity rule is chronological: E-rank describes the starting hunter, S-rank describes the later public reassessment, and Shadow Monarch describes the deeper supernatural identity revealed afterward. None of those terms replaces the others retroactively.

Anime episode 19 establishes the reassessment stage and the existence of Jinwoo’s shadow-commanding power, but it is not a substitute for the later print-story revelations. The Monarchs-and-Rulers war, the full explanation of the Shadow Monarch identity and Jinwoo’s confrontation with the source of his power are sourced to later English comics and novels.
That means an episode guide can accurately call him an S-rank hunter at the anime stage without claiming that the anime has already explained every reason he can command shadows. Conversely, a novel or comic synopsis can call him the Shadow Monarch without suggesting that “Shadow Monarch” is a new letter grade issued by the Korean Association.

The official anime site announced on July 4, 2026 that a sequel film, Beyond the System, is in production. The announcement gives no release date, so it should not be described as premiered, scheduled for a particular month or evidence that Jinwoo’s established rank has changed.
Side stories also describe a changed timeline. Readers should not automatically treat that setting as the unchanged starting world of the original hunter story; check which continuity a synopsis is describing before comparing ranks or institutions.

- Calling “legendary” a formal grade: no consulted official source verifies it as a Hunter Association rank.
- Equating Player with S-rank: Player is Jinwoo’s progression status; S-rank is his later administrative assessment.
- Reading “10th S-rank” as a power position: it identifies the tenth recognized S-rank hunter, not tenth place on a strength chart.
- Putting Shadow Monarch above S-rank on the same ladder: the Monarch identity explains the source and scale of his powers rather than adding a letter grade.
- Using later spoilers to summarize the opening: the Monarchs-and-Rulers conflict and the Shadow Monarch revelation occur after the E-rank and double-dungeon setup.
FAQ
Is Jinwoo stronger than every S-rank hunter?
The publisher specifically describes him as Korea’s strongest S-rank hunter after the Jeju Island stage. That wording establishes his national standing at that point, but it is not a universal, dated ranking of every S-rank hunter worldwide.
Do I need to read the novel if I watch the anime?
The anime provides the reassessment and core shadow-power setup, while the novels and comics supply later explanations of the Monarchs, Rulers and the source of Jinwoo’s abilities. Reading the novel is therefore useful for the complete lore, but it also introduces major spoilers beyond the anime’s current stage.
