Choose a socially intelligent home robot by the interaction you want, not by the “AI” label. Eilik is a touch-responsive desktop character; its optional AI Station adds conversation. Loona is a wheeled robot for family play, Moflin offers pet-like tactile interaction without understanding speech, and ElliQ is designed for older adults who want conversation and reminders. Before buying, check where it will operate, what sensors and connectivity it needs, what the complete setup costs, and what it cannot safely do.

What should you decide before choosing a robot?
Start with the person who will use it and the interaction they actually want. A robot built for expressive play is not a substitute for a conversational assistant, and a soft robotic pet is not a speech-understanding companion.

- Name the desired interaction. Decide whether the goal is touch-and-expression play, spoken conversation, movement around the home, pet-like comfort, or prompts and communication for an older adult.
- Choose the operating area. A wheeled robot needs suitable floor space, passable thresholds, a place to dock, and a plan for stairs, loose cables and household pets. A desktop or stationary model avoids some movement-related fit questions.
- Set sensor and connectivity boundaries. Check whether the particular model has a camera or microphone, whether Wi-Fi or an app is needed, and what the maker says about processing and uploads.
- Calculate the full ownership cost. Include required accessories, memberships, recurring cloud plans and any lease initiation fee—not just the robot’s headline price.
- Set realistic expectations. These devices simulate designed interactions; they do not feel as people do, establish a clinical benefit, or replace human contact. For a care-related purchase, identify what the robot cannot do in an emergency.
Which kind of interaction fits your household?
The clearest way to compare these products is by what the maker says they are designed to do. The product names and marketing terms can sound similar, but the interaction and household demands differ.
For a desktop character: Eilik or EMO
Eilik is a touch-responsive expressive robot intended for desktop play. Energize Lab says its basic operation does not require Wi-Fi. Conversation and camera-assisted familiar-face recognition belong to the separately sold AI Station, which requires an Eilik; do not assume the basic robot includes those features. The Station’s magnetic camera cover is also described on the maker’s product page. Energize Lab’s Eilik listing.
Recommended Free Tools
LivingAI sells EMO and EMO GO HOME. The maker describes GO HOME as a character that can return to charge and move within a limited area. That is different from a roaming robot intended to travel around a family living space. LivingAI’s accessed store listed EMO at US $279, EMO GO HOME at US $369 and a separate Home Station at US $99; check the listing to confirm whether a particular offer is a bundle and what is included. LivingAI store.
For roaming family play: Loona
Loona Petbot Premium is a wheeled, camera-and-microphone-equipped family-play robot. KEYi Tech advertises facial recognition and games, and offers dock bundles. Before choosing it, consider whether the layout is suitable for a wheeled device and whether its app and data practices meet your household’s needs. The linked maker page uses a European locale and displayed euros, so it does not establish a US price. It also lists DeskMate separately; that is not the same product as Loona Petbot. KEYi Tech’s Petbot page.
For pet-like touch without speech understanding: Moflin
Moflin is a soft, touch-responsive companion, not a conversational assistant. Casio says it does not understand or record what users say. Its page says voice features are converted into recognition data held locally, and that uploads through the MofLife app happen only when the user chooses. Casio lists Moflin on its US site and Amazon; its comfort-oriented product claims should not be read as clinical evidence. Casio’s Moflin information.

For older-adult conversation and prompts: ElliQ
Intuition Robotics describes ElliQ as a stationary conversational and wellness-oriented companion for adults aged 60 and older who live alone or spend much of the day alone. Its FAQ says US availability is in English and that it needs power and Wi-Fi. ElliQ may be worth evaluating for conversation and routine prompts, but the maker explicitly says it is not an emergency device. ElliQ FAQ.

For mobile check-ins: Enabot EBO X
Enabot describes EBO X as a mobile video and check-in robot and advertises conversation, fall alerts and medication reminders. Those are manufacturer claims, not proof of validated emergency detection. The accessed manufacturer listing showed a US-plug option but also an out-of-stock notice, so availability needs confirmation before treating it as a buy-now option. Enabot’s EBO X listing.
For a cloud-dependent robot pet: Sony aibo
Sony is a useful example of why a robot’s ongoing service matters as much as its hardware. Sony says its aibo plan is necessary for full learning and app features, includes an initial three years, and costs US $300 per year to renew. The accessed US information did not establish current hardware availability, so the plan information alone does not confirm that aibo can currently be purchased in the United States. Sony aibo plan information.
How do movement and room layout affect the choice?
Movement can make a robot more interactive, but it also adds household-fit questions. A wheeled model needs an environment and charging arrangement that suit its intended movement; desktop and stationary options avoid some of those demands.
- Check thresholds and stairs. Determine whether the planned play area has level transitions, stair edges or other boundaries that could matter to a moving device.
- Clear the route. Look for loose cables, crowded floor space and places where pets may interfere with a wheeled robot.
- Choose a docking position. For products with a dock or home station, allow a practical place for it and check whether the specific bundle includes the station.
- Match movement to the user. If the interaction is meant to happen at a desk or bedside, a roaming model may add complexity without serving the main need. Conversely, a desktop character will not provide mobile check-ins around the home.
These are suitability checks, not independent findings about navigation reliability. The maker descriptions identify Loona as wheeled, Enabot EBO X as mobile, and EMO GO HOME as moving within a limited area; they do not establish how reliably any device handles a particular home. See the respective Loona, EBO X and EMO GO HOME product information.

What will the complete setup cost?
There is no like-for-like price across these devices: one may need an accessory for conversation, another is tied to a membership, and a cloud-dependent robot can have renewal costs. The prices below are manufacturer listing snapshots available around the end of October 2026; offers, stock, bundles and terms can change, so confirm them before purchase.
| Product or plan | Listing or plan detail | What to include in the budget |
|---|---|---|
| Eilik | US $139.99 sale price and US $149.99 comparison price shown by Energize Lab | AI Station is separate and required for its added conversation and camera features; its price was not stated in the accessed listing. |
| EMO | US $279 listed by LivingAI | Confirm which model and accessories are in the order. |
| EMO GO HOME | US $369 listed by LivingAI | Home Station was listed separately at US $99; verify whether a selected offer includes it. |
| ElliQ | US $249 one-time lease initiation, plus a membership. The FAQ advertised $39/month billed as $936 every 24 months; $49/month billed as $588 annually; or $59 billed monthly. | The advertised monthly equivalents for the two longer plans are not billed monthly: account for the stated 24-month or annual billing. The two longer plans advertised a 30-day trial; the monthly plan did not. |
| Sony aibo plan | Sony lists an included initial three years and a US $300/year renewal | Confirm current hardware availability and the terms that apply to a purchase. |
| Loona, Moflin and EBO X | A comparable US price was not established in the cited listing information | Check the maker’s current US listing, stock, shipping region and exact bundle before budgeting. |
Sources: Energize Lab, LivingAI, ElliQ FAQ and Sony. For ElliQ, the advertised monthly amount and the billing cadence are different details; budget using the amount billed and its interval, not the monthly equivalent alone.
Does a socially intelligent robot understand feelings?
No. “Socially intelligent” in this buying context means a device is designed to respond in social-seeming ways; it does not show that it has human feelings or that it can diagnose or treat loneliness. Casio states of Moflin: “Moflin does not possess actual emotions like humans do. Their emotional expressions are simulated by AI.” Casio’s Moflin FAQ.
Evidence about companionship should be interpreted with care. A 2026 report from the New York State Office for the Aging and Intuition Robotics said that 834 older adults had joined the New York ElliQ program as of May 2025, after screening. The report also said 94% of participating clients reported feeling less lonely during the program’s third-year period, June 2024–May 2025. That is a self-reported program result, not a measured 94% reduction in loneliness and not a randomized treatment effect. New York State Office for the Aging and Intuition Robotics report.

What should you ask about cameras, microphones and data?
Sensor presence is only the start of a privacy review. Ask what the robot collects, where processing happens, whether an app or cloud service is necessary, how recordings or images can be deleted, and what features stop working if you end a service.
- Camera and microphone: Confirm whether the exact model or accessory has either sensor. Eilik’s basic model should not be confused with the camera-equipped AI Station; Loona is described as having a camera and microphone.
- Speech handling: Casio says Moflin does not understand or record what users say, and describes locally held recognition data derived from voice features. Its FAQ says uploads via MofLife happen only when chosen.
- Connectivity and accounts: Eilik’s basic operation does not require Wi-Fi, while ElliQ requires power and Wi-Fi. Check app requirements separately for the exact product, region and feature.
- Deletion and service end: Ask the manufacturer how to remove account data, what happens to stored information when an account closes, and which functions depend on an ongoing service. Do not assume these answers from the product’s social or playful design.
- Children’s use: Check age guidance, parental controls and data practices. The US Federal Trade Commission explains that COPPA can apply to operators of child-directed services or services with actual knowledge that they collect personal information from children under 13; its guidance is useful for understanding why connected toys warrant specific questions, not an allegation about any product named here. FTC COPPA frequently asked questions.
Can a robot help an older adult in an emergency?
Do not rely on a social robot as an emergency device. ElliQ says explicitly, “ElliQ is not an emergency device.” Enabot advertises fall alerts for EBO X, but that marketing claim is not evidence that the product provides validated emergency detection or replaces an emergency-response system. ElliQ FAQ and EBO X listing.
If the purchase is part of a care plan, separate companionship and reminders from emergency response. Verify what the product can do, what connectivity it relies on, who receives an alert if one is offered, and what backup arrangements the household will use. For immediate safety needs, consult the person’s care team rather than treating a robot’s advertised feature as a substitute for a reliable response plan.
How do you make the final choice?
Use the intended interaction as the first filter, then eliminate any option that does not fit the home, budget or privacy boundaries. A feature that requires a separate station, Wi-Fi or continuing membership should be evaluated as part of the product—not as an optional detail after purchase.
- For a simple desktop play companion, consider Eilik as described in its basic form; add the AI Station only if its separate conversation and camera features are wanted.
- For a character that can move a little and return to charge, compare EMO GO HOME’s limited-area movement with a stationary desktop option and confirm the station bundle.
- For roaming family play, evaluate Loona’s wheeled form against the household’s floor plan, sensor comfort and app requirements.
- For touch-based pet-like interaction without speech understanding, consider Moflin and review Casio’s stated data handling and care claims.
- For older-adult conversation and prompts, evaluate ElliQ’s lease and membership billing, Wi-Fi requirement and explicit emergency limitation.
- For mobile check-ins, verify EBO X availability and treat advertised alerts as features to investigate, not guaranteed safety coverage.
Before checkout, confirm live pricing, regional availability, the included accessories, support terms and any recurring charges on the manufacturer’s current page. If the main benefit you need is human connection, clinical support or emergency coverage, a socially interactive robot should be an addition—not the plan itself.

Casio says Moflin does not understand or record users’ speech. Its product information says voice features are converted into recognition data held locally, with uploads through the MofLife app only when chosen.
How long does Moflin run on one charge?
Casio’s FAQ estimates about five hours of use per charge under its stated conditions. Actual use can vary with conditions, so treat that as the maker’s estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime.
Does COPPA apply to smart toys?
It can apply to operators of child-directed online services, and to services with actual knowledge they collect personal information from children under 13. The FTC’s FAQ explains the scope; parents should still check the specific toy’s age guidance, controls and privacy terms.
