Snowflake and Amazon S3 solve different problems, so one is not a direct substitute for the other. Snowflake is a managed platform for analytical SQL and data services; Amazon S3 is object storage for files and data-lake content. Use Snowflake when you need managed, governed analytics, S3 when you need durable and flexible object storage, and both when S3 should hold the data while Snowflake supplies the analytical experience.
What is the difference between Snowflake and Amazon S3?
The key difference is the unit each service manages. Snowflake works with database objects such as tables, views, and stages, and runs SQL on virtual warehouses. S3 stores objects inside buckets, each addressed by an object key. That distinction determines how data is organized, queried, operated, and billed.

| Area | Snowflake | Amazon S3 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary abstraction | SQL tables, views, stages, and virtual warehouses | Buckets and objects identified by keys |
| Main purpose | Managed analytical SQL and data-platform services | Durable, elastic object storage and a data-lake foundation |
| Operations | Snowflake manages table layout, compression, metadata, and statistics; customers choose and manage workloads and access | AWS operates the storage infrastructure; customers configure buckets, keys, storage classes, lifecycle rules, and access policies |
| Compute | Virtual warehouses execute workloads and consume Snowflake credits | S3 is storage, not an analytical compute engine; services such as Athena and Redshift Spectrum can query data in S3 |
| Typical cost drivers | Compute credits, storage, and data transfer | Storage, requests, retrieval, transfer, replication, management, and query or transform features |
| How they can work together | Can ingest data from external storage or work with external data, including S3-backed Iceberg tables | Can remain the storage layer while Snowflake provides managed SQL analytics |
Snowflake reorganizes loaded table data into compressed, columnar storage and manages micro-partitions, metadata, and statistics. Its virtual warehouses are independent compute clusters, which allows workloads to be isolated from one another. In practical terms, teams work with SQL tables rather than having to design and maintain the underlying file layout for each analytical query.
S3 instead stores data as objects. AWS describes it as a fully managed object-storage service for storing and retrieving data at any scale. An object can be a source file, backup, log, media asset, or a data-lake dataset; the bucket, key, metadata, storage class, and access policy govern how it is organized and used. S3 does not itself provide the same managed table-and-warehouse experience as Snowflake.

Is Snowflake a data warehouse or object storage?
Snowflake is a cloud data platform with managed database storage and analytical compute, rather than a general-purpose object-storage service like S3. Its storage layer keeps table data in a managed format, while virtual warehouses perform SQL work and cloud services coordinate platform functions.
This separation matters because storage and compute can be managed independently. A virtual warehouse can be started, resized, or assigned to a workload without changing the logical table definition. Different warehouses can serve different workloads, helping reduce competition between, for example, data loading and analyst queries. Snowflake still has storage costs; separating compute from storage does not mean storage is free or that every query has the same compute cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →S3, by comparison, does not turn objects into Snowflake tables automatically. Objects remain files addressed by keys. To analyze them, a team can use a service that queries S3 data, load or otherwise expose data to Snowflake, or adopt an architecture that keeps table data in external storage. The right route depends on whether the priority is a managed warehouse experience, retaining files in an open storage layer, or both.
Can Snowflake use Amazon S3?
Yes. Snowflake supports external stages and tables for Amazon S3-compatible storage, and supports Apache Iceberg tables whose data and metadata files remain in external cloud storage such as S3. That makes a combined design practical: S3 can hold raw, open-format, or archival data, while Snowflake provides managed SQL analytics.

Use S3 as a landing or exchange layer
In this pattern, applications, data producers, or other tools write files to S3. Snowflake can access or ingest data from that external location, while S3 remains useful as a shared exchange point for systems that are not Snowflake. Teams should decide explicitly which system owns the authoritative copy, how data is updated, and how permissions are granted; the services do not automatically keep every copy or table in sync.
Keep Iceberg data in external storage
With an S3-backed Iceberg design, the data and metadata files remain in external cloud storage rather than being wholly managed as ordinary Snowflake table storage. This can be useful when open table formats and shared access are architectural requirements. It also means teams need to understand which service manages table metadata and how readers and writers coordinate changes; do not assume an external table behaves identically to a standard Snowflake-managed table.

Choose cloud and region deliberately
Snowflake accounts can be provisioned on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The selected cloud platform and region affect data-transfer paths, data residency, latency, and cost. When using S3 with Snowflake, verify that the account, bucket, and workloads are placed in a configuration that meets residency and access requirements, and assess whether cross-region or cross-cloud movement is involved.
Which should you choose for a data lake?
Choose S3 when the priority is a flexible object layer that can retain files for multiple tools and purposes. Choose Snowflake when the priority is managed analytical SQL over curated, governed data. A common architecture uses S3 for the durable lake or exchange layer and Snowflake for warehouse-style analysis, rather than treating the choice as all-or-nothing.

Choose Snowflake when
- Your users need governed analytical SQL over tables and views.
- You want the platform to manage table organization, compression, metadata, and statistics.
- You need independent virtual warehouses to isolate analytical workloads.
- Your team values a managed data-platform service over designing and operating the query layer itself.
Choose S3 when
- You need object storage for files, backups, archives, logs, or broad data-lake retention.
- Many AWS or third-party tools need to exchange or access files.
- You want control over storage class, lifecycle, versioning, and object-level organization.
- You need a durable home for open-format data or data that should remain accessible independently of one analytical platform.
Use both when
- S3 should retain the durable raw or shared copy, while Snowflake serves governed SQL workloads.
- Different teams need object-level access and warehouse-style analytics on the same broader data estate.
- You want to separate long-lived file retention from the compute resources used for interactive analysis.
Using both adds integration and governance work: teams must manage identity and permissions across services, decide how updates flow, and account for data movement. The benefit is that each service can handle the job it is designed for rather than forcing object storage to act like a warehouse or a warehouse to act like a general file repository.
How do Snowflake and S3 costs compare?
There is no useful universal per-gigabyte comparison. Snowflake and S3 charge for different combinations of storage, compute, and operations, and the total depends on workload, access frequency, storage class, region, transfer paths, and enabled features.

| Compute or queries | Virtual warehouses consume credits while running | S3 itself is storage; analytics and transformation services can add separate charges |
| Requests and retrieval | Not listed as a foundational Snowflake usage type in the cited pricing guidance | Requests and retrieval can contribute to cost, depending on storage class and access pattern |
| Data transfer | Transfer is a foundational usage type; egress can incur per-terabyte fees | Transfer and acceleration are listed cost components |
| Other charges | Depends on account usage and region pricing | Replication, management and insights features, and query or transform features can add costs |
For Snowflake, the foundational usage categories are compute, storage, and data transfer. Compute uses credits; storage is based on average on-disk bytes and account and region pricing; and egress may incur per-terabyte fees. A workload that leaves warehouses running longer or runs more intensive queries can change compute usage even if the stored dataset does not change.
For S3, AWS lists storage, requests, retrieval, data transfer and acceleration, management and insights features, replication, and transform or query features among the cost components. Storage class and how often data is accessed materially affect the total: a class chosen for infrequently accessed data may have different retrieval and request consequences than one chosen for frequent access. Adding a separate query engine also means S3 storage is not the whole cost of analyzing the data.

Before selecting an architecture, estimate the components separately: retained data volume and class, expected reads and writes, query or warehouse runtime, replication, and transfers between services or regions. For a combined design, include both services and the paths data takes between them. A single storage-rate comparison misses the costs that often distinguish the options.

AWS reports designed durability of 99.999999999% and default availability of 99.99% for S3 on its product page. These are service-level figures from AWS, not a promise that an application, access policy, or recovery workflow will always be configured correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAWS S3 documentation describes at least 3,500 requests per second to add data and 5,500 requests per second to retrieve data per prefix. These are request-rate figures for a prefix, not a guarantee of application throughput for every object size, client, network path, or workload. Design and test the full data path—including clients, request patterns, permissions, and the service doing analytics—rather than treating a per-prefix figure as a complete performance forecast.
S3 offers versioning, access controls, lifecycle management, and multiple storage classes. These features address different operational needs: versioning can preserve object variants, lifecycle rules can transition or expire objects, and IAM policies, bucket policies, and access points can control access. They do not eliminate the need to set retention, recovery, and least-privilege policies deliberately.

What operational trade-offs should you consider?
Snowflake reduces the burden of managing analytical table layout and compute infrastructure, but teams still make decisions about access, workload sizing, data organization, and cost controls. Its managed abstractions are useful when SQL analytics is the main objective; they are less suited to being treated as an undifferentiated bucket for every file produced across an organization.
S3 provides a broad object layer, but its flexibility shifts configuration choices to the customer. Teams must define bucket and key conventions, choose storage classes, set lifecycle and versioning behavior, and configure permissions. Querying data also requires an analytics or transformation service, so an S3 architecture can involve more components than a single managed warehouse service.

How do you make the decision?
- Start with the workload. If the core requirement is SQL analysis on managed tables, evaluate Snowflake first. If it is retaining and serving objects to many tools, evaluate S3 first.
- Identify the authoritative copy. Decide whether objects in S3, Snowflake-managed tables, or an external table format is the source of truth. Document how updates and corrections propagate.
- Map the readers and writers. List which applications, analysts, and services need access, and whether they require files, SQL tables, or both.
- Choose cloud location and data paths. Check account and bucket regions, residency obligations, latency, and potential transfer charges.
- Estimate the complete cost. Include storage and its class, Snowflake compute credits, requests, retrieval, transfer, replication, and any separate query or transformation service.
- Test the design against real access patterns. Validate permissions, query behavior, ingestion or update flow, and recovery procedures before relying on the architecture in production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I query files in S3 from Snowflake without loading them into managed tables?
Snowflake supports external stages and tables for Amazon S3-compatible storage, so access to external data is possible without treating every file as a Snowflake-managed table. The exact behavior and management responsibilities depend on the external table or table format you choose.
Does storing data in S3 automatically make it available to Snowflake?
No. The services need an intentional integration and appropriate access configuration; placing an object in a bucket does not by itself create a Snowflake table or grant Snowflake access. Plan the connection, permissions, and any ingestion or external-table setup for the architecture you choose.
Can S3 replace a Snowflake warehouse for analytics?
S3 can store the files being analyzed, but it does not itself provide Snowflake’s SQL warehouse and managed table experience. AWS analytics services or other engines can query S3 data, with their own configuration and costs.
