The Smeg FAB38RRDAU is worth considering only if its distinctive 1950s styling, very large cabinet and bottom-freezer layout matter more to you than electricity use and uncertain availability. It offers 461L of manufacturer-listed storage, frost-free cooling, an inverter compressor and a 0°C drawer, but its original Australian specification is 569 kWh per year, a two-star energy rating and 42 dBA noise. The exact model is marked no longer available by a major retailer, so most buyers will be assessing clearance or second-hand stock rather than a normal current purchase.
That makes this a value-and-risk decision, not a simple performance recommendation. The current red FAB38RRD5AU is a useful same-family benchmark: it lists 481.1L storage, 328 kWh per year and 41 dBA, although it costs more and is a different model. The comparison below keeps the two refrigerators’ figures separate.

What is the Smeg FAB38RRDAU, and who is it for?
The FAB38RRDAU is an Australian-market, red, 50’s-style refrigerator with the freezer at the bottom. Its strongest reasons to buy are visual design, capacity and the convenience of reaching the refrigerator compartment without bending for everyday items. Its main penalties are high declared energy consumption, a large installation footprint and the difficulty of finding a new unit.
It suits a household that treats the refrigerator as part of the kitchen’s design and has room for a deep, heavy appliance. It is a poorer match for a buyer whose priorities are the lowest running cost, independently published temperature-performance scores or a straightforward current-market replacement.

What are the FAB38RRDAU’s specifications?
The model’s headline capacity depends on which measurement is used. Smeg’s datasheet gives gross cabinet capacities, while its storage figures describe the space available for food. CHOICE lists another total-volume figure from its 2021 test listing, so these numbers should not be mixed as if they were identical measurements.
| Specification | FAB38RRDAU | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator gross capacity | 355L | Manufacturer cabinet-volume figure |
| Freezer gross capacity | 155L | Manufacturer cabinet-volume figure |
| Total gross capacity | 510L | 355L refrigerator plus 155L freezer |
| Total storage volume | 461L | 309L fresh-food, 24L Life Plus 0°C compartment and 128L frozen-food storage |
| CHOICE listed total volume | 504L | Figure shown on CHOICE’s 2021 model page; measurement basis differs from the datasheet storage figure |
| Annual energy use | 569 kWh/year | Smeg Australia 2020/2021 specification; CHOICE repeats the figure |
| Australian energy rating | Two stars | Original model specification |
| Noise | 42 dBA | Listed acoustic rating |
| Net weight | Approximately 113kg | Plan for a heavy two-person move or professional delivery |
The manufacturer’s capacity and energy figures are documented in the FAB38RRDAU datasheet. CHOICE’s model page records the 504L test listing, 569 kWh/year, two stars, a 2021 test and a historical price of $3,990 at the time of its listing: CHOICE FAB38RRDAU page.
How much food can the refrigerator actually hold?
For planning shelves and drawers, use the 461L storage total rather than the 510L gross figure. The storage breakdown is 309L for fresh food, 24L in the 0°C compartment and 128L for frozen food. Gross capacity includes spaces that are not available as straightforward usable storage, so it is normal for the two totals to differ.
The freezer’s 128L storage volume is substantial for a bottom-freezer refrigerator, but the model is not a side-by-side cabinet with equal refrigerator and freezer halves. The layout favours fresh-food storage and places the freezer lower, which is convenient for frequently accessed refrigerator items but requires bending for frozen food.
How much electricity does the FAB38RRDAU use?
The original specification declares 569 kWh per year and a two-star Australian energy rating. CHOICE repeats those figures. That is the model’s clearest ownership drawback: a large retro cabinet consumes considerably more electricity on its declared label than the current same-family FAB38RRD5AU, which Smeg lists at 328 kWh per year.
Your bill depends on the electricity rate and actual operating conditions. A simple estimate is:

annual running cost = 569 × your electricity price per kWh
For illustration only, at $0.30 per kWh the label figure would equal about $170.70 per year (569 × $0.30). Substitute your tariff; this is not a quoted national Australian rate and does not account for usage conditions, tariff changes or solar generation.
The 569 kWh number is a declared annual value from the 2020/2021 Smeg specification, not a promise that every household will measure exactly that consumption. Door-opening frequency, room temperature, loading, thermostat settings and ventilation can change real-world use. Nevertheless, the two-star label is a meaningful warning for buyers focused on lifetime operating cost.
What are the FAB38RRDAU’s dimensions and installation requirements?
Measure the route into the kitchen, not just the final alcove. The cabinet is 2,050mm high and 706mm wide. Depth is 771mm without the handle and 811mm with it. With the door opened to 90 degrees, listed depth becomes 1,340mm, and maximum width with the doors open is 1,070mm.
| Measurement | Listed dimension | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 2,050mm | Check overhead cabinets, ceiling height and the appliance’s delivery angle |
| Width, doors closed | 706mm | Check the niche and the narrowest doorway |
| Depth without handle | 771mm | Shows how far the cabinet projects before adding the handle |
| Depth with handle | 811mm | Use this for the finished front-to-back projection |
| Depth with door at 90° | 1,340mm | Allow space for opening, drawers and access |
| Maximum width with doors open | 1,070mm | Check adjacent walls, islands and furniture |
| Net weight | About 113kg | Confirm flooring, lift access and delivery handling |
The dimensions and weight come from the Smeg datasheet. Before paying for a used or clearance unit:
- Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway turn and lift or stair landing.
- Compare those measurements with the 706mm closed width and 811mm handle-inclusive depth.
- Check the 2,050mm height against overhead cabinetry and the delivery team’s ability to tilt the cabinet safely.
- Mark the 1,340mm door-open depth and 1,070mm open-door width on the floor with tape.
- Confirm the final position leaves the ventilation and service access required by the installation manual; the datasheet dimensions alone do not specify a universal clearance for every kitchen.
What cooling and convenience features does it include?
The FAB38RRDAU’s feature set is conventional for a large frost-free refrigerator, with several useful controls:

- Fast-freezing compartment: a separate setting or area is provided for quickly freezing newly added food.
- Manual ice maker: ice production is manual rather than an automatic plumbed dispenser.
- Acoustic and visual door-open alarm: the refrigerator can alert you when a door remains open.
These are listed equipment features, not a substitute for measured temperature stability. The accessible public CHOICE page does not disclose the model’s numerical temperature-stability score or detailed laboratory results.
Is the FAB38RRDAU quiet enough for an open kitchen?
Smeg lists 42 dBA. That is a useful comparison point, but it is not a guarantee that the refrigerator will be inaudible in every room. Floor vibration, compressor cycling, surrounding cabinetry and the distance between the appliance and seating area affect what you hear.

The current FAB38RRD5AU is listed at 41 dBA, only 1 dBA lower on its specification. Noise therefore is not the main reason to choose the successor; energy consumption and availability are more consequential differences.
How does the FAB38RRDAU compare with the current FAB38RRD5AU?
The FAB38RRD5AU is the clearest same-family benchmark, but it is not an updated specification of the older appliance. Treat the figures as separate model data.

CHOICE keeps the Expert Rating, temperature-stability results, reliability score and detailed laboratory scores behind member access on that page. Because those numerical results are not publicly available in the cited record, it would be misleading to assign the FAB38RRDAU a specific temperature or reliability verdict.
CHOICE whitegoods expert Denis Gallagher cautioned: “Looks aren’t everything, and considering you’re buying a core kitchen appliance, you really need it to do its job well.” The surrounding CHOICE article discusses poor results for other Smeg retro models; that is brand-category context, not a test score for this exact refrigerator. Read it here: CHOICE’s Smeg retro-appliance context.
Is the FAB38RRDAU discontinued?
There is strong evidence that it is no longer a normal current-market model. Winning Appliances marks the exact FAB38RRDAU as no longer available, while manuals and retailer pages remain online. “No longer available” does not tell you whether every warehouse has sold its last unit, whether a display model remains or whether a particular seller can service a unit, so verify the exact serial-numbered appliance before paying.
The retailer status is recorded at Winning Appliances’ FAB38RRDAU page. If you are searching marketplaces, use the exact phrase Smeg FAB38RRDAU refrigerator and treat every “new” or “in stock” claim as something to confirm directly with the seller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat warranty applies, and what should a second-hand buyer check?
Smeg Australia says FAB refrigeration collections receive five years of parts-and-labour warranty. The same warranty policy describes an additional three years of parts-only cover for sealed-system parts after the initial 24 months, subject to domestic installation, proper use and authorised-service conditions. Because those provisions can depend on the purchase date, seller and appliance history, ask Smeg or an authorised service provider to confirm what transfers to a clearance or second-hand unit.
The warranty information is published at Smeg Australia’s warranty page. Before buying, obtain the original invoice if available and record the model and serial labels. Ask in writing whether the warranty remains valid, who pays for transport and whether a non-authorised repair would affect coverage.

What should you inspect before buying a used or clearance FAB38RRDAU?
A discontinued refrigerator can be a sensible purchase when the discount compensates for its energy use and support risk. Use this inspection sequence rather than relying on a cosmetic photograph:
- Confirm identity: photograph the model plate and make sure it says FAB38RRDAU, not a visually similar FAB model.
- Check the energy label: verify that the label and seller’s description match the 569 kWh/year, two-star specification.
- Inspect doors and seals: look for torn gaskets, sagging hinges, cracked liners and doors that fail to close squarely.
- Test controls and alarms: confirm that electronic controls respond, LED lights work and the door-open alarm activates.
- Check cooling operation: ask how long the unit has been running, whether it reaches stable temperatures and whether the seller can provide recent thermometer readings. Do not treat a brief demonstration as a laboratory test.
- Listen for abnormal operation: a normal 42 dBA listing does not diagnose a particular used unit; rattling, scraping or repeated clicking deserves investigation.
- Inspect the freezer: check for excessive ice, damaged drawers and a functioning manual ice maker and fast-freezing control.
- Measure the delivery route: use the full height, handle-inclusive depth and door-open dimensions, not only the cavity width.
- Price in electricity: compare the purchase discount with the annual cost calculated from your own tariff.
- Get service confirmation: ask whether parts and authorised technicians are available in your area before committing.
What are the FAB38RRDAU’s main advantages and disadvantages?
| Advantages | Disadvantages and risks |
|---|---|
| Distinctive red 1950s-style design | High declared use of 569 kWh/year and a two-star rating |
| 461L manufacturer-listed storage, including a 128L freezer | Large 2,050mm-high, 811mm-deep-with-handle cabinet |
| Bottom freezer keeps the refrigerator section at a more convenient height | About 113kg net weight complicates delivery and relocation |
| Frost-free operation and inverter compressor | Exact model is marked no longer available by a major retailer |
| 0°C drawer, fast-freezing compartment, LED lighting and door alarm | Public CHOICE page does not expose numerical temperature or reliability scores |
| Five-year parts-and-labour FAB warranty is stated by Smeg, subject to policy conditions | Second-hand or clearance warranty transfer and service support need confirmation |
Is the Smeg FAB38RRDAU worth buying?
Buy it when the design is a primary requirement, the 461L storage layout fits your household, the installation route works and the price is low enough to offset higher electricity use and uncertain support. A well-documented clearance unit with verified warranty status is less risky than an anonymous used appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 569 kWh/year figure tell me exactly what my electricity bill will be?
No. It is a declared annual consumption figure used for comparison under label test conditions. Multiply it by your own tariff for a planning estimate, then allow for room temperature, door openings, loading and tariff changes.
Why does one listing say 510L while another says 504L or 461L?
Those figures use different measurement conventions. The Smeg datasheet separates 510L gross capacity from 461L storage, while CHOICE lists 504L for its test record; they should not be treated as contradictory measurements of the same volume.
Can I assume the FAB38RRDAU warranty transfers with a used refrigerator?
Do not assume it. Smeg’s policy has conditions covering installation, use and service, and a seller may not have the documents needed to prove eligibility. Confirm transferability with Smeg or an authorised service provider before purchase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the most important measurement when planning delivery?
Measure the entire route and the appliance in its least forgiving orientation. The handle-inclusive 811mm depth, 2,050mm height and door-open dimensions can matter more than the nominal 706mm cabinet width when the refrigerator turns into a hallway or sits beside an island.
