The Smeg FAB32RBENA1 is a 326 L, right-hinge, bottom-mount fridge-freezer with a 1950s-inspired look. It is a compelling choice if that design and its relatively narrow 600 mm width are priorities, but the exact dark-blue model is marked discontinued, and owner reports are mixed. Check the model suffix, the unit’s condition, the seller and the warranty before paying a premium for remaining stock.
What is the Smeg FAB32RBENA1?
It is an Australian-market member of Smeg’s FAB32 retro refrigerator range: a freestanding, bottom-freezer appliance in royal blue, with the freezer below the refrigerator and a right-hand hinge. The model code matters. FAB32 products and regional variants can share the same family styling while differing in capacity and specification, so do not assume that a listing for another FAB32 is the same appliance.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The look is the main point of distinction. The FAB32RBENA1 pairs the rounded, 1950s-inspired exterior with a practical split between fresh-food storage above and freezer storage below. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends less on the styling alone than on whether the interior volume and dimensions fit your household and kitchen.
It is a conventional freestanding format rather than a built-in appliance. That gives you more flexibility about placement, but the exterior dimensions, hinge side and required clearances still need to be checked before delivery. A product photo is not enough to establish the exact hinge, colour or regional specification; use the rating plate and the seller’s written listing.

How much can it hold, and what is inside?
The Australian listing gives this model 326 L of total capacity: 228 L in the refrigerator and 98 L in the freezer. That division makes it a fresh-food-led layout rather than a large-freezer appliance. The refrigerator represents about two-thirds of the stated volume, so it is better suited to shoppers who keep more fresh food, drinks and prepared meals than frozen goods.
| Specification | FAB32RBENA1 |
|---|---|
| Total capacity | 326 L |
| Refrigerator capacity | 228 L |
| Freezer capacity | 98 L |
| Height | 1926 mm |
| Width | 600 mm |
| Depth, including handle | 720 mm |
| Noise | 41 dBA |
| Published annual energy use | 323 kWh/year |
| Australian retailer energy rating | 3.5 stars |
The refrigerator layout includes three quick-chill glass shelves, a clear meat keeper, a foldable 12-place egg nest, a bottle rack and door storage. The freezer has two drawers, including a fast-freeze drawer, and an ice-cube tray. Adjustable glass shelves help adapt the refrigerator space, but the listed total capacity does not tell you how much room a particular shopping routine or bulky item will require.
Think about the shape of what you store, not just the litre total. Tall bottles may need a particular shelf position; wide platters may need a shelf removed; and a drawer freezer divides the 98 L into separate compartments rather than one open cavity. If you regularly buy large frozen packages, check drawer dimensions and the opening width in person or against detailed interior photographs. For a couple, the capacity may be comfortable, while a larger household may find the freezer restrictive even if the total volume appears adequate.
Will it fit in my kitchen?
Measure the opening, route into the kitchen and space around the appliance before ordering. At 600 mm wide it is relatively narrow, but its 1926 mm height and 720 mm depth including the handle can still make it unsuitable for a tight alcove or a shallow counter run.
Measure the full route, not just the cabinet opening
- Measure the narrowest point on the delivery route, including doorways, hallways and turns.
- Measure the installation space at floor level and higher up; a wall, trim or cabinet can narrow the opening above or below the point where you first measure.
- Use the 720 mm depth figure as the handle-inclusive measurement, then account for any additional space your installation requires.
- Check the right-hand hinge against nearby walls, cabinets and appliances. Confirm that the door can open far enough for your usual access and that drawers or shelves can be removed as needed.
- Ask the seller or installer for the required ventilation and clearance dimensions for the specific unit. The listed exterior dimensions alone do not establish those clearances.
- Check ceiling height and stair or lift access for a 1926 mm appliance. Delivery teams may need a different approach if the unit cannot travel upright through the route.
Door swing deserves particular attention: a unit can fit its rectangular opening but still be frustrating to use if the hinge side is crowded. The specification identifies this version as right-hinge; do not rely on a family name or a product photo to confirm the hinge on a listing. Verify the exact suffix and orientation with the seller.
Also establish who is responsible for unboxing, positioning and removing packaging. If the unit is second-hand or display stock, inspect corners, door alignment, seals and handles before it is moved into place, because damage can be harder to document after delivery.

Is the FAB32RBENA1 frost-free?
The refrigerator uses automatic defrost, while the freezer is described as frost-free. These are different descriptions for the two compartments, not a claim that every part of the refrigerator is frost-free.
The retailer specification also lists two thermostats and a tropical rating. Two thermostats indicate separate temperature control for the compartments in the listed specification, while the tropical rating identifies the intended operating classification. Neither feature replaces checking that the appliance is operating correctly. For a used or display unit, ask the seller to demonstrate that both compartments cool and that controls and drawers work before you commit.
Look for evidence of correct operation rather than relying on a cold exterior. Ask how long the appliance has been running, whether it has ever shown temperature or condensation problems, and whether any repair work was carried out. Confirm that doors close squarely and seals make continuous contact, since a damaged seal can undermine cooling even when the compressor appears to run.

How much electricity does it use?
The published specification is 323 kWh per year, and the Australian retailer listing gives a 3.5-star energy rating. Treat the consumption figure as a test value rather than a promise about your household’s electricity use or bill.

To estimate the energy charge from the published figure, multiply 323 kWh by your tariff per kWh. That calculation is useful for comparing models on the same tariff, but it is only a rough comparison, not a forecast of the amount this particular appliance will add to your bill. Actual consumption varies with room temperature, door-opening frequency, the amount and temperature of food loaded, thermostat settings and the condition of the door seals.
When comparing a current refrigerator, read the energy label on that exact regional model. Do not combine the Australian FAB32RBENA1 figure with a different country’s test method or assume that every FAB32 variant has identical consumption. If energy cost is a major priority, a newer model may have a different rating even when its exterior styling is similar.
How noisy is it?
The published noise figure is 41 dBA. That gives a useful specification-level comparison with other refrigerators, but perceived noise also depends on the room, flooring and how close the appliance is to living or sleeping areas. Compressor starts, fans and cabinet vibration may be more noticeable in a quiet open-plan kitchen than the single number suggests.
If buying a display or used unit, listen while it starts and stops and check for rattling, scraping or persistent vibration. A normal operating cycle is not silent, so one brief sound is not by itself evidence of a fault; unusual or continuous noise should prompt a service question.

Public owner accounts are mixed and anecdotal, so they do not establish a dependable failure rate or a confident prediction of how long a particular unit will last. The available accounts are useful as prompts for questions about service and condition, not as a substitute for an inspection or warranty check.
Appliances Online displays one independently managed review with a 5.0 overall rating. That reviewer said the fridge was smaller than their previous appliance but adequate for two people. ProductReview’s page for the exact model includes a negative report describing condensation and temperature problems, attempted repair and a refund. Its broader FAB32-series listing shows 3.2 out of 5 from 23 reviews, including both gas-leak and service complaints and reports of successful warranty replacements.
Those examples point in different directions. They are not a controlled test, and the series-level score combines accounts that are not necessarily about the FAB32RBENA1. A buyer considering a particular unit should give more weight to its age, service history, observed condition and applicable warranty than to an aggregate review score.
Ask specifically whether the seller has records of temperature complaints, leaks, compressor work or replacement parts. For a discontinued appliance, a documented repair history can be more informative than a generic statement that it was “working when removed.” A demonstration should include both compartments, interior lights, controls, drawer movement and door seals.

Is the FAB32RBENA1 discontinued, and can I still buy one?
ProductReview marks the exact dark-blue FAB32RBENA1 listing as discontinued. That label does not prove that every remaining unit has disappeared from sale, but it does mean you should treat current listings as stock that needs verification rather than assume this exact model is routinely available new.
Remaining examples may be new old stock, display appliances, refurbished units or previously owned refrigerators. Those categories can differ in age, cosmetic condition, included accessories and warranty eligibility. Before paying, establish the sales condition, confirm the model suffix and ask for the purchase date or other available history.
Get the warranty terms in writing and identify who will provide service if something goes wrong. Ask whether the seller can document the unit’s history, whether delivery damage is covered and whether any manufacturer coverage transfers. A low sticker price may not compensate for uncertain condition, difficult service access or the absence of coverage. Include delivery, installation and removal charges when comparing the total cost with a current alternative.
What warranty and service coverage applies in Australia?
Smeg Australia states that FAB refrigeration appliances have a five-year parts-and-labour warranty. Its warranty information also describes an additional three years of sealed-system parts warranty for refrigeration after the initial 24 months, subject to conditions. The agency terms say the five-year warranty runs from the date the product was purchased in Australia.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In practical terms, confirm exactly which parts fall within the sealed-system provision, when the clock starts and what documentation is required. Parts-only coverage does not necessarily mean labour, transport or other repair costs are included, so read the terms for the transaction rather than relying on a verbal summary.
Do not assume a second-hand, grey-market, display or imported unit receives the same protection as a new Australian purchase. Smeg’s agency terms also state a policy of assuring spare parts and service for at least ten years after production of the applicable product ceases; that is a policy statement, not a guarantee that a particular part is immediately available or that every repair will be economical.
Before purchase, record the seller’s business name, invoice details, model and serial information, and the service contact for your address. Those details make a warranty claim easier if a problem appears later and help distinguish manufacturer coverage from a retailer’s separate promise.
What should I check before buying a remaining or used unit?
Use the inspection to reduce the uncertainty created by discontinued status and mixed owner accounts. If possible, see the appliance running and have the seller document what is included and what coverage transfers.

How does it compare with other FAB32 models?
Compare by region and exact suffix, not by the family name alone. Smeg UK lists a newer FAB32 variant with 261 L of fresh-food capacity and 97 L of freezer capacity; those figures are not interchangeable with the Australian FAB32RBENA1’s listed 228 L refrigerator and 98 L freezer volumes.

The difference illustrates why litre figures need a regional label. A newer variant can have a similar appearance yet provide more fresh-food space, a slightly different freezer volume, different energy labelling or different warranty terms. Confirm the country specification, hinge side, refrigerant listing and dimensions before treating any model as a substitute.
For a fair comparison, line up usable refrigerator and freezer capacity, width, depth, door swing, frost-free arrangements, annual energy use, noise, warranty and local service access. Include current availability and the condition of any remaining FAB32RBENA1 stock. A model with a similar appearance may take a different amount of space or offer a different capacity split.
Use a simple comparison sheet with one row per model and the exact figures from each regional specification sheet. Compare energy values only when they are presented on a comparable basis, and compare warranty coverage by parts, labour, duration and geography rather than by headline years alone.

It is most suited to someone who values the 1950s-inspired design, needs a relatively narrow freestanding refrigerator and can verify a sound unit with appropriate Australian warranty coverage. Its fresh-food-heavy capacity split may suit a household that uses the refrigerator more than the freezer. The 600 mm width can also appeal where a wider American-style appliance will not fit, provided the 720 mm handle-inclusive depth and 1926 mm height work in the room.
It is a less reassuring choice if your priority is guaranteed current stock, the latest efficiency information, a large freezer or a strong evidence base for long-term reliability. In those cases, compare current alternatives on capacity, dimensions, energy use, noise and warranty rather than buying on appearance or family branding alone.
The design premium is easiest to justify when the appliance is in excellent condition, the seller is established, the warranty is documented and service is available locally. If any of those points is uncertain, price the risk into your decision and compare a current successor or another retro refrigerator on like-for-like specifications.
What does the refrigerant listing establish?
Queensland’s government register lists FAB32RBENA1 among approved domestic refrigerators using R600a refrigerant, with approval issued on 21 July 2015. That is a regulatory listing; it should not be read as a performance endorsement or as evidence of the condition of an individual appliance.
If buying used, treat refrigerant information as one specification to verify, not a substitute for checking cooling performance and service history. Any refrigerant-related repair should be handled through an appropriately qualified service provider. Ask the seller whether the sealed system has ever been opened or repaired and retain the answer with your purchase records.
What is the final buying verdict?
The FAB32RBENA1 remains appealing because it combines a distinctive royal-blue retro exterior with a relatively narrow footprint and a useful 228 L refrigerator section. Its 98 L frost-free freezer, automatic refrigerator defrost, 41 dBA noise figure and published 323 kWh/year consumption provide a clear baseline for comparison.

However, the exact model’s discontinued status changes the buying decision. Verify the unit, seller, condition, service route and Australian warranty before paying a premium, and compare any remaining example with current models using the same capacity, dimension, energy and coverage criteria. For a buyer who accepts that diligence, it can be a satisfying design-led refrigerator. For a buyer seeking the simplest route to current stock and predictable support, a current alternative is the safer starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 3.5-star figure mean owners rated the fridge 3.5 out of 5?
No. The 3.5-star figure is the energy rating shown on the Australian retailer listing. It is separate from customer-review scores, which use a different scale and source.
Can I use the UK FAB32 capacity figures to plan an Australian kitchen?
No. Regional variants may have different capacity splits even when they share the FAB32 name. Use the capacity and dimensions for the exact model suffix being sold in your region.
Does the refrigerant approval tell me whether a used unit is in good condition?
No. The government register records an approval for the model, not an inspection of an individual refrigerator. Ask about operating condition and service history separately.
Is the Smeg FAB32RBENA1 frost-free?
The refrigerator is listed with automatic defrost and the freezer with frost-free defrost. Those descriptions apply to the separate compartments, so confirm the specification for the exact unit.
How much does it cost to run each year?
The published test figure is 323 kWh per year. Multiply that number by your electricity tariff per kWh for a rough energy-cost estimate; actual use varies with temperature, door openings, loading and settings.
Is the FAB32RBENA1 still available new?
The exact dark-blue model is marked discontinued, although remaining stock may exist. Confirm whether a listing is new old stock, display, refurbished or used, and verify warranty eligibility before paying.
What warranty does Smeg Australia list for FAB refrigeration?
Smeg Australia states five years of parts and labour for FAB refrigeration, with an additional three years of sealed-system parts coverage after the initial 24 months, subject to conditions. Check the terms for the exact purchase.
Are Smeg FAB32 refrigerators reliable?
Owner reports are mixed and anecdotal. One retailer-hosted review was positive, while other reports mention condensation, temperature, gas-leak or service problems. These accounts do not establish a failure rate, so inspect the specific unit and verify coverage.
What should I compare with a current alternative?
Compare refrigerator and freezer capacity, width, depth, hinge clearance, defrost system, annual energy use, noise, warranty, availability and local service. Make sure every figure comes from the same regional specification basis.
