The best smart lock is the one that fits your door, matches the way you enter, and still lets you inside when power or connectivity fails. Start by measuring the door and identifying its lock type; then choose between an interior retrofit and a complete replacement. Only after that should you compare Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Thread/Matter, hubs, security grades, and battery arrangements. A retrofit such as the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock can preserve a compatible exterior deadbolt, while full-replacement models such as Yale Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) and Schlage Arrive provide new exterior hardware and different backup options.

This guide gives you a decision sequence, model-level comparison, installation checks, and failure plans so you can buy for your actual door rather than for a feature list.

How do I know whether a smart lock will fit my door?

Confirm the door preparation and the existing lock type before comparing apps or connectivity. A lock can be electronically excellent and still be unusable if its bore pattern, backset, thickness, or cylinder design does not match.

Identify the holes and lockset

  • One-hole doors: Yale’s compatibility guidance generally directs these doors toward lever-style products.
  • Two-hole doors: They can accept several deadbolt families, but the replacement must match the exterior hardware and the existing preparation.
  • Mortise-prepped doors: The Yale products covered by the guidance are not compatible with mortise preparation. August’s compatibility document also excludes mortise locks.
  • Interconnected locksets: These combine the knob or lever and deadbolt in one mechanism. Yale says they require replacement with a new deadbolt and matching mechanical hardware rather than a simple retrofit.

Do not infer compatibility from the word “standard.” August’s documentation is a useful warning: its retrofit locks work with single-cylinder deadbolts but exclude mortise locks, double-cylinder deadbolts, and certain high-security or single-sided designs.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Measure the four dimensions that determine fit

  1. Door thickness: Measure the slab, not the trim. Yale lists 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches for Assure Lock 2 models.
  2. Face bore: Measure the large circular hole through the door. Yale lists a 2-1/8-inch face bore for Assure Lock 2 models.
  3. Edge bore: Measure the hole in the door edge where the bolt enters. Yale lists a 1-inch edge bore.
  4. Backset: Measure from the door edge to the center of the face bore. Yale lists either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches for Assure Lock 2 models.

Those figures describe Yale’s listed models, not a universal standard for every smart lock. Record your measurements and compare them with the exact model’s installation sheet. If the manufacturer offers an online compatibility checker, use it; it can catch exclusions that a tape measure alone cannot.

Check the bolt and exterior cylinder

For a retrofit, verify that the deadbolt is single-cylinder: a keyed cylinder outside and a thumb turn inside. Check that the bolt moves smoothly with the door open and closed. A stiff or misaligned bolt can overload the motor and later look like a battery or connectivity fault. Double-cylinder, mortise, single-sided, and some high-security designs need a model-specific solution or a full replacement.

Should I buy a retrofit or replace the whole deadbolt?

Choose a retrofit when preserving the exterior hardware and existing keys matters; choose a full replacement when you want a known, matched hardware platform and are willing to change the outside cylinder or keypad.

What a retrofit changes

An interior retrofit replaces or drives the inside mechanism while leaving the outside cylinder in place. That can make it attractive for renters or for owners who like their current exterior appearance and keys. It also means the smart lock inherits the old deadbolt’s wear, alignment, and compatibility limits. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is the retrofit path in this guide, and it is limited to the compatible single-cylinder configurations in August’s documentation.

What a full replacement changes

A full replacement supplies a new exterior keypad, cylinder, or both, along with a new interior mechanism. Yale Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) and Schlage Arrive follow this approach. Installation is more involved because you remove the existing deadbolt and fit the supplied mechanical parts, but you start with hardware the manufacturer designed and tested as a system. Existing keys normally stop working after the cylinder is changed, so plan for new keys or keypad codes.

Decision checklist

  • Choose a retrofit if you need to keep the outside cylinder, want a less visible change, or cannot replace the exterior hardware.
  • Choose a full replacement if your current deadbolt is worn, does not meet the compatibility requirements, or you want a new keypad and a documented lock-body grade.
  • If the door has mortise, double-cylinder, interconnected, or unusual high-security hardware, stop and obtain a model-specific fit confirmation before ordering.

Which entry methods should a smart lock provide?

Entry methods should match how the household actually arrives home and how it will recover from a dead phone or depleted batteries. The models in this guide document different backup and control approaches, so verify the exact feature list for the regional version you plan to buy.

Mechanical key

A keyed backup is independent of the app, wireless network, and lock batteries. Yale states that the YRD510 can be unlocked with its mechanical key when the batteries die. Keep a key accessible outside the home through a trusted person or a secure location; storing the only spare inside defeats the fallback.

Keypad codes

A keypad can let residents enter without carrying a key, but the available data does not establish a universal code capacity or scheduling feature for these models. Treat code limits, temporary-code support, and lockout behavior as model-specific specifications to verify before purchase.

Phone and local control

Bluetooth is primarily a local, phone-nearby connection. It is useful when you are at the door and generally avoids the always-on remote radio activity of Wi-Fi. Phone control still depends on the phone having battery and the lock’s app supporting the operation you need.

Biometrics and NFC

Fingerprint readers and NFC tags can be convenient, but neither is documented as a guaranteed feature for the three model paths discussed here. Do not assume that a product listing’s “smart entry” phrase means fingerprint or NFC support; look for the exact hardware and software requirements.

Do I need Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, Matter, or a hub?

Pick connectivity based on where you need control. Bluetooth is local, Wi-Fi can provide direct remote access, and a hub can concentrate network duties and automation integrations. Matter is an interoperability layer, not a synonym for Wi-Fi.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth-only operation keeps communication close to the lock and phone. Vivint’s 2026 guide characterizes this mode as local control. It can be a good fit when remote unlocking is unnecessary, but it will not by itself let you operate the lock from another location.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi can support remote control and notifications without a separate hub, depending on the model. The trade-off is higher radio activity and generally greater battery demand than a local-only connection. Schlage Arrive uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; Schlage says remote access is available without a hub after the lock is paired at the installation location.

Hub-connected locks

A hub handles network communication for the lock and can simplify broader home-automation integrations. It adds another powered device and another possible failure point, so check whether the hub is included, which ecosystems it supports, and what happens if the hub is offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter and Thread

Matter is designed to improve cross-platform compatibility, but the lock and controller must support the features you want. Yale says the YRD510 can connect through Matter to Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings. Yale also says remote operation requires a compatible Matter-over-Thread border router and a compatible phone.

That requirement is easy to miss: Matter and Wi-Fi are separate checks. A Matter lock may communicate over Thread, and Thread requires a border router. Confirm that your chosen platform has a compatible border router before assuming “Matter” means remote access out of the box.

Connectivity selection questions

  1. Do you need to lock or unlock the door while away from home?
  2. Does your preferred ecosystem support the exact lock, not merely Matter in general?
  3. Is a border router or hub already installed and powered where the lock will be used?
  4. Can the lock continue to operate locally if the internet, hub, or phone is unavailable?

How should I compare smart-lock security grades?

Read the exact model’s ANSI/BHMA grade for the lock body. An app, keypad, or biometric reader does not replace the mechanical security rating.

What the grades indicate

Vivint summarizes the residential grading scale as Grade 1 highest, Grade 2 intermediate, and Grade 3 lowest. The designation applies to the lock hardware’s tested performance; it is not a score for the quality of the mobile app or cloud service.

Published grades for the models in this guide

Model Installation path Published grade Connectivity Power and backup
Yale Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) Full replacement ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 Matter over Thread; supports Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings when compatible requirements are met Low-battery warnings; mechanical-key backup
Schlage Arrive Full replacement ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 1 and Residential Grade AAA Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; remote access without a hub after local pairing Four AA alkaline batteries; up to six months of published battery life
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock retrofit Interior retrofit for compatible single-cylinder deadbolts Not stated in August’s cited compatibility document Wi-Fi retrofit path; exact ecosystem requirements are model-specific Not stated in the cited compatibility document

Schlage’s Grade 1 and Residential Grade AAA claims are certifications published for Arrive by Schlage Residential in 2025. Yale’s Grade 2 claim is published for the YRD510 by Yale Home Support in 2026. Compare like-for-like documentation: a grade for one lock body does not establish the grade of another model in the same product family.

What happens if the batteries die?

Plan the recovery method before installation. A lock without a documented fallback can turn a routine battery failure into a lockout.

Documented fallbacks

  • Yale YRD510: Yale documents low-battery warnings and a mechanical-key override.
  • Schlage Arrive: Schlage specifies four AA alkaline batteries and publishes up to six months of battery life. The figure is an estimate, not a guarantee.
  • August retrofit: The cited compatibility material establishes fit exclusions but does not provide a battery-life or emergency-entry specification; confirm those details in the exact model’s manual.

Battery life varies with usage, wireless signal conditions, temperature, and firmware. Treat “up to six months” as the manufacturer’s stated ceiling under its conditions, not as a replacement schedule that applies to every home.

Build a backup routine

  1. Enable every low-battery notification offered by the lock and its app.
  2. Keep the specified replacement cells in the home, and replace them as a complete set with the chemistry and size the manufacturer requires.
  3. Test the mechanical key or emergency-power contacts with the door open before relying on them.
  4. Keep a physical key or another documented fallback available to the people who may need entry.
  5. Inspect the bolt and strike alignment. A bolt that rubs the strike increases motor load and can create apparent battery problems.

How do I install and configure a smart lock without creating a lockout?

  1. Photograph and measure the existing hardware. Record door thickness, face bore, edge bore, backset, lock type, and whether the deadbolt is single-cylinder.
  2. Run the manufacturer’s compatibility check. Resolve mortise, double-cylinder, interconnected, single-sided, and high-security exclusions before removing the old lock.
  3. Install with the door open. Fit the bolt and interior or exterior assemblies according to the model’s instructions.
  4. Check mechanical movement. Turn the thumb turn or key several times. The bolt should extend and retract without scraping or forcing.
  5. Install fresh, correct batteries. Confirm polarity and wait for the lock’s startup indication.
  6. Pair locally first. For locks that require local pairing for remote operation, complete setup while standing near the lock. Schlage specifically requires local pairing to achieve its remote connection.
  7. Configure the chosen ecosystem. For the YRD510, verify that the Matter controller and Matter-over-Thread border router are compatible before enabling remote control.
  8. Create and test entry credentials. Test the key, keypad or app method supplied by the model, and any household accounts that need access.
  9. Test the failure paths. With the door still open, disable the internet, move the phone away, trigger a low-battery warning if the manual permits, and verify the mechanical or emergency method.
  10. Close the door only after all tests pass. Keep the key or emergency procedure available during the first days of use.

Which buying path fits common door situations?

Renters preserving the existing exterior

Start with a retrofit candidate, but confirm single-cylinder compatibility and obtain permission if the lease requires it. A retrofit avoids changing the outside cylinder yet cannot correct a worn or poorly aligned deadbolt.

Owners replacing a worn or unusual deadbolt

Favor a full replacement after confirming bore dimensions and backset. This gives you a new mechanical platform and a published grade where the manufacturer provides one.

Households already using a smart-home platform

Choose the ecosystem only after checking the transport underneath it. Matter support may still require Thread and a border router; Wi-Fi support may avoid a hub but use more battery; Bluetooth alone remains local.

Homes where internet outages are common

Prioritize a lock with a mechanical key or other documented local fallback. Remote features can disappear during an outage, but a properly fitted mechanical path should remain available.

What are the most common smart-lock buying mistakes?

  • Assuming every deadbolt is interchangeable: Door thickness, bores, backset, cylinder style, and mortise or interconnected preparation determine fit.
  • Buying on the ecosystem logo alone: Matter, Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, and SmartThings compatibility still depends on the exact lock, controller, border router, and supported features.
  • Ignoring alignment: A motor cannot compensate indefinitely for a bolt that binds against the strike.
  • Counting on remote access during a network failure: Remote control needs the required Wi-Fi, hub, Thread, border-router, and phone conditions to be available.
  • Leaving backup entry untested: A key, emergency contact, or alternate method is useful only if you know where it is and have confirmed that it works.
  • Comparing grades from different documents as if they were identical: Check the exact ANSI/BHMA designation and the model named in the certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a smart lock on a door with a mortise lock?

The Yale products covered by the compatibility guidance are not designed for mortise preparation, and August’s cited compatibility document excludes mortise locks as well. A mortise-specific product or professional hardware assessment is required; do not force a deadbolt retrofit onto that preparation.

Will a smart lock work when my home internet is down?

Local operation may still work, depending on the lock, phone, hub, and protocol, but remote operation normally will not. Test the lock with the internet disconnected and keep the documented mechanical or emergency fallback available.

How often should I replace smart-lock batteries?

Use the lock’s low-battery warning and the manufacturer’s stated estimate rather than a universal calendar. Schlage publishes up to six months for Arrive, while actual life changes with use, temperature, radio conditions, and firmware.

Is a higher ANSI/BHMA grade enough to make a door secure?

The grade describes tested lock hardware, not the entire door assembly. The strike, screws, frame, door construction, installation quality, and alignment also affect the finished installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep my old keys with a full-replacement smart lock?

Usually not when the exterior cylinder is replaced, because the new cylinder uses a different keyway or key. A retrofit is the better path when retaining the existing outside cylinder and keys is a priority.
