Verdict: The SleepMaker Miracoil Armadale is a tall, firm queen mattress with a light-spring core and a well-documented specification, but it is discontinued. That makes the condition, age and warranty position of any remaining unit more important than the original badge. It can suit shoppers who specifically want a firm traditional spring feel, while most buyers will get a safer purchase by testing a currently sold Miracoil successor or another mattress with equivalent firmness and support.
Public evidence is strongest for the Armadale’s construction, dimensions and historical pricing. Independent testing details are not publicly disclosed, and owner reports for the wider Miracoil family are positive overall but include sagging complaints. Use this review to decide whether an old-stock Armadale is worth the risk and how to compare it with a current replacement.

The Armadale was a queen-size, firm spring mattress in SleepMaker’s Miracoil family. CHOICE records a light-spring core, 174 springs per square metre, 12 layers, a weight of 34 kg and a height of 33 cm. Its CHOICE listing shows a $2,099 price and an $850 price paid after sale or bargaining. Those are historical figures, not a current recommended retail price.
| Confirmed Armadale specification | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Size | Queen |
| Feel | Firm |
| Support core | Light-spring construction |
| Spring density | 174 springs per square metre |
| Layers | 12 |
| Mattress weight | 34 kg |
| Height | 33 cm |
| CHOICE listed price | $2,099 |
| CHOICE reported price paid after sale or bargaining | $850 |
| Current status | Discontinued |
A 33 cm profile is substantially taller than many basic innerspring mattresses. Check that your fitted sheets, bed frame clearance and headboard proportions can accommodate it. The 34 kg weight also matters when carrying the mattress upstairs or positioning it on a bed base.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is the Armadale mattress genuinely firm?
Yes. The Armadale is identified as a firm model, but firmness is not measured on a universal scale. The same mattress can feel harder to a lighter sleeper and less hard to a heavier sleeper, while sleeping position, body shape and the flexibility of the base change the experience.
What the spring specification suggests
The light-spring core and 174-springs-per-square-metre figure describe the support system, not a guaranteed comfort sensation. The 12-layer build adds materials above the coils, so two mattresses with the same spring density can still feel different at the shoulders and hips. Ask to lie on the actual unit for at least 10 minutes in your normal sleeping positions if you are considering old stock.

Who should be cautious with a firm feel?
- Side sleepers may feel excessive pressure at the shoulder and hip if the surface does not provide enough cushioning.
- People with pronounced curves may need more contouring than a traditionally firm spring surface supplies.
- Couples with different body weights should each test the mattress; one partner’s ideal firmness can feel uncomfortably hard or soft to the other.
- Anyone buying remotely should obtain a written exchange or return policy, because a firmness label does not predict personal comfort precisely.
How does SleepMaker’s Miracoil support system work?
SleepMaker describes Miracoil as a continuous, Z-shaped coil system. The company says the continuous coil covers more surface area than regular spring systems and is intended to provide more even body support. That is a manufacturer description of the design, not an independent laboratory finding about the Armadale.
The current Miracoil range is offered in Super Firm, Firm, Medium and Plush comfort choices. Current sizes run from Single through Super King, and SleepMaker lists a 10-year warranty for the range. A current model may not reproduce the Armadale’s exact layer stack, fabric, height or feel, so use the comfort label only as a starting point.

Weight limits stated by the manufacturer
SleepMaker says Miracoil mattresses are designed to support two adults weighing 120 kg each. It says Miracoil Advanced mattresses can support two sleepers weighing up to 150 kg each. These are manufacturer claims; confirm that the exact model, base and warranty you are buying carry the same rating, especially if the mattress is older or sold by a third party.
Is the SleepMaker Miracoil Armadale still available?
The Armadale is marked discontinued in the public CHOICE record. You may still encounter unused old inventory, a display model, a private resale listing or a mattress described as an Armadale when it is actually a different Miracoil model. Treat availability as a condition-and-documentation question rather than assuming a discontinued label means the mattress is new.
Questions to ask a seller of remaining stock
- Ask for a photograph of the law label and the full model name, not just a catalogue image.
- Request the manufacturing date or batch information and confirm whether the mattress has ever been slept on.
- Ask how it was stored. A mattress kept compressed, damp, uncovered or in direct heat may not perform like a warehouse-stored unit.
- Get the warranty terms in writing, including who handles a claim for discontinued inventory and whether proof of original purchase is required.
- Confirm the exact price, delivery charge, old-mattress removal fee and any restocking or exchange fee before paying.
- Check the sleep surface, seams, handles and edges for stains, odour, tears, deformation or uneven settlement.
A seller offering an old Armadale without a model label, date, receipt or clear warranty route is asking you to accept most of the product risk. The historical $850 bargain price does not compensate for an unusable warranty or an already-settled comfort layer.
What do owners say about the Miracoil range?
ProductReview.com.au reports 4.2 out of 5 from 358 reviews for the broader SleepMaker Miracoil range, with 78% positive and 22% negative sentiment. Those posts cover multiple Miracoil models and years, so they are useful for recurring themes but cannot be treated as a controlled test of the Armadale.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Positive themes
- Some owners describe the mattresses as comfortable and supportive.
- Several posts say the mattress helped reduce perceived neck or back discomfort.
- Support is often praised when the mattress is new and correctly matched to the sleeper.
Negative themes
- One owner reported that a pillow top became noticeably soft and saggy after three months.
- Another described progressive sagging after several years and a disputed warranty outcome.
- Because the reports span the range, model, age, base and body weight may explain some of the variation.
Read owner reviews as durability signals, not as a forecast for your own result. Look for reviews that identify the exact model, purchase date, foundation and sleeper weights; a short review of a different Miracoil version is weak evidence for an Armadale decision.
Is Miracoil good for back support?
SleepMaker says Miracoil is endorsed by Sports Chiropractic Australia and supported by back-care professionals for improving spinal alignment and back health. That statement is a manufacturer claim. It does not establish that the Armadale treats back pain, prevents injury or will align every sleeper’s spine.
For back comfort, the practical test is whether your spine stays in a neutral position without pressure points when you lie in your usual posture. A mattress that feels supportive in a showroom can still cause problems if the base is unsuitable, the pillow is wrong or the surface has softened. Persistent or severe pain warrants medical advice rather than a mattress-only solution.
A simple in-store back-support check
- Lie on your back for several minutes with your usual pillow. Your hips should not sink noticeably lower than your chest.
- Roll onto your side and ask a companion to check whether your spine appears roughly straight from neck to pelvis.
- Notice pressure at the shoulder, ribs, hips and knees. Sharp pressure is a warning even if the mattress feels stable.
- Change position and sit on the edge. Excessive edge collapse can make getting in and out difficult and may indicate a poor match.
- Repeat the test on the base you will actually use; a flexible or damaged base changes the feel.
What should you buy instead of a discontinued Armadale?
Start with the current Miracoil model that matches the firmness you can tolerate, then compare its construction, trial terms and warranty with other available mattresses. Do not assume that a newer product with the same family name has the Armadale’s 33 cm height, 12-layer build or light-spring specification.

The current range is sold in sizes from Single through Super King and lists a 10-year warranty. Ask the retailer whether the warranty is full-term or prorated, what constitutes a sagging defect, and whether the retailer or manufacturer processes claims.
Use these comparison anchors
- Firmness: Compare the actual feel, not just the word Firm.
- Support design: Ask whether the mattress uses continuous coils, pocket springs, foam, or a combination, and how the design affects edge support.
- Pressure relief: Check shoulder and hip comfort in your normal position.
- Motion transfer: Have both partners move, turn and get out of bed while the other lies still.
- Temperature: Ask about the cover, comfort layers, ventilation and the room in which you sleep.
- Height and weight: Compare the full mattress height with your existing sheets, frame and headboard; do not infer the current model’s weight from the Armadale’s 34 kg figure.
- Warranty and after-sale terms: Confirm duration, exclusions, inspection fees, transport responsibility and the definition of an acceptable settlement.
- Trial or exchange: Check the minimum trial period, hygiene requirements, pickup cost and whether an exchange is allowed only once.
- Total delivered cost: Add delivery, stairs, assembly, removal and any protector or base required.
How should you compare a replacement mattress step by step?
A repeatable test prevents the discontinued status from pushing you into a rushed purchase.
- Write down your non-negotiables. Record size, target firmness, maximum budget, height limit, preferred base and whether either sleeper has pressure or back-comfort concerns.
- Measure the bedroom and base. Confirm the internal bed dimensions, access route, stair turns and ceiling clearance. A queen mattress that fits the room may still be impossible to carry through the entry.
- Shortlist by feel first. Try Super Firm, Firm, Medium and Plush only as starting labels. Spend enough time on each option to detect pressure that appears after the initial impression.
- Test as a couple. Lie together, change positions and sit on the edge. Record whether one person rolls toward the other or feels movement when the partner turns.
- Verify the paperwork. Photograph the model label, read the warranty exclusions and ask how a sagging or body-impression claim is measured.
- Calculate the delivered total. Include delivery to your floor, old-mattress removal, base compatibility and a correctly sized protector.
- Keep every document. Save the invoice, model name, serial or batch information, warranty and written promises about exchange or delivery.
What should you inspect if you find a used or old-stock Armadale?
Inspection cannot restore a mattress that has already lost its support, so walk away from defects you cannot document and price.
- Run a straight edge across the sleeping surface and look for visible valleys, ridges or uneven edges.
- Press several zones with your hand and then lie in the centre and both sleeping positions; a single comfortable spot does not prove uniform support.
- Check the underside and foundation for moisture, mould, broken slats or incompatible spacing.
- Smell the fabric and inspect for stains, pet damage, smoke odour and signs of infestation.
- Ask whether the mattress was used with a protector and whether it came from a smoke-free, pet-free room.
- Confirm transport can keep the mattress flat or in the orientation specified by the seller; bending a spring mattress improperly can damage its support.
- Do not rely on a transferable warranty unless the manufacturer confirms transferability in writing.
How do you care for an Armadale or another Miracoil mattress?
Sleep House’s SleepMaker care guidance recommends a quality washable mattress protector and keeping the mattress clean, dry and ventilated. A protector limits sweat, spills and skin oils reaching the comfort layers, but it does not correct sagging or make an old mattress hygienically equivalent to new.

For a queen Armadale recorded at 33 cm thick, look for a queen protector advertised for approximately 33 cm depth, then verify the actual pocket depth and elastic fit against your mattress. A protector that is too shallow can pull up at the corners; one that is too loose can wrinkle and alter the surface feel. Wash it according to its care label and allow it to dry completely before remaking the bed.
- Keep the bedroom and mattress surface dry and ventilated.
- Use a stable, compatible base and inspect slats or centre supports periodically.
- Rotate only if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it; do not flip a one-sided mattress without confirmation.
- Address spills immediately and avoid soaking the interior.
- Retain the receipt and model information for any warranty claim.
What are the main strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
- Clearly documented firm feel, 33 cm height and 34 kg weight.
- Published light-spring construction with 174 springs per square metre and 12 layers.
- Traditional spring support may appeal to sleepers who dislike an all-foam feel.
- Current Miracoil successors provide several comfort levels and a published 10-year warranty.
- Historical sale pricing shows that substantial discounts were possible when the model was sold.
Weaknesses and risks
- The Armadale is discontinued, so stock may be old, second-hand or incorrectly labelled.
- Public CHOICE information does not disclose an Expert Rating or laboratory results for support, stability, sagging resistance, breathability, warmth or wear.
- Owner feedback for the broader range includes early softening, long-term sagging and disputed warranty experiences.
- Firmness and back comfort vary substantially by sleeper, base and pillow.
- Old-stock warranty handling and replacement parts may be less straightforward than for a current model.
Is the Armadale worth buying?
Buy an Armadale only when the exact model is verified, the unit is clean and undamaged, the price reflects its age, and the seller provides a credible warranty or return route. Its firm feel, tall profile and known spring specification make it a reasonable candidate for someone who has tried that exact mattress and likes it.
For most shoppers, a current mattress is the lower-risk choice. A current Miracoil Firm model is the nearest label-based starting point, but test Super Firm, Medium and Plush if your body or sleeping partner needs something different. Compare the delivered price and after-sale terms rather than treating the discontinued Armadale’s historical price as a benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Armadale be used on an adjustable bed?
The published Armadale information does not establish adjustable-base compatibility. Ask the manufacturer or retailer for written approval before placing a traditional spring mattress on a powered base, and check whether doing so would affect warranty coverage.
Will a firm mattress cure back pain?
No mattress can be assumed to cure back pain. Comfort and neutral alignment are individual, and ongoing or severe symptoms should be assessed by a qualified health professional rather than managed by changing mattresses alone.
How can couples test motion transfer in a showroom?
One person should lie still while the other turns, sits up and gets in and out of bed. Swap positions, then repeat near the centre and edge; note movement, noise and whether either sleeper is pushed toward the middle.
Recommended Free Tools
What warranty evidence should I keep after buying old stock?
Keep the dated invoice, model and batch photographs, warranty booklet, delivery record and all written messages from the seller. Ask who pays inspection and transport costs before a defect appears, because discontinued-stock claims may be handled differently from current products.
