Verdict: SleepMaker Impulse is a queen-size, in-store spring mattress sold as firm, but CHOICE now labels it a “Discontinued model.” Its recorded price was $999, or $899 after sale or bargaining; those are historical figures, not a current quote. Buying remaining stock can make sense only after you verify the mattress’s age and condition, the seller’s warranty, return terms and the quality of the supporting base.
The public information is enough to establish the Impulse’s construction and dimensions, but not to assign it a CHOICE test score. CHOICE displays expert-rating and testing fields publicly while keeping the rating and detailed results for members, so no laboratory performance claim can be made from the visible record.

The SleepMaker Impulse is a firm-feel, queen-size spring mattress designed for in-store sale in Australia. CHOICE records it as an 11-layer mattress with 174 springs per square metre, a 25 kg weight and a 27.5 cm profile. Its listed dimensions are 203 cm long by 153 cm wide by 27.5 cm high.

“Firm” is the manufacturer or listing description, not a standardized comfort score. Two sleepers can experience the same mattress differently because of body weight, sleeping position, bed base and personal preference. Treat the specification as a starting point for an in-store trial rather than a guarantee of pressure relief or long-term support.

Is the SleepMaker Impulse still available?
CHOICE marks the Impulse as a discontinued model. That normally means it is no longer part of the current range, although an Australian retailer may still have unopened floor, warehouse or clearance stock. Availability therefore depends on individual stores rather than a national model listing.
Ask a retailer to confirm the exact model name and size in writing. “Impulse” should appear on the invoice or product label, not just in an online description that could refer to a different SleepMaker range. Request the manufacture date, whether the mattress has been used as a display model, and whether it has been stored flat in a dry, clean environment.
What remaining-stock labels mean
- New, sealed stock: The most straightforward case, but still ask for a dated invoice and the written warranty terms.
- Warehouse clearance: Confirm how long it has been stored and inspect packaging for moisture, tears or compression.
- Floor sample: Treat it as used. Check for body impressions, stains, odours, fabric damage and missing labels, and obtain the retailer’s return and warranty position before paying.
- Private or marketplace sale: Verify that the manufacturer warranty is transferable; do not assume a second owner receives the original coverage.
How firm is SleepMaker Impulse?
The Impulse is listed with a claimed firm feel. That tells you the intended comfort category, but it does not establish how firm the mattress remains after years of use or how it performs for a particular sleeper.
Try it in the position you normally sleep in. Spend several minutes on your back and side, and check whether your hips sink noticeably lower than your shoulders. A firm surface can still feel different depending on the base underneath it, the age of the floor sample and the sleeper’s weight distribution. If two stores have the model, compare them; a heavily used display can feel unlike sealed stock.
Questions a firm-mattress buyer should settle in store
- Does the surface allow your shoulders to settle without forcing your neck out of alignment?
- When lying on your back, does the mattress support the lower back without creating a gap or a pressure ridge?
- Can you turn over without fighting the comfort layers?
- Does your preferred pillow still keep your head level on the firmer surface?
These checks are personal fit tests, not a substitute for a published laboratory result. The public CHOICE page does not provide a visible firmness score or detailed test data for the Impulse.
What do the Impulse’s spring and size specifications tell you?
The recorded 174 springs per square metre and 11 layers describe the mattress’s construction at a high level. They do not identify the spring gauge, coil geometry, foam densities, edge reinforcement or the composition of each layer, so those details should not be inferred from the spring count.

At 27.5 cm thick, the Impulse is a substantial mattress. Measure the bed frame, headboard clearance and fitted-sheet pocket depth before delivery. The queen dimensions recorded by CHOICE—203 x 153 cm—should be checked against your existing base because frames sold as “queen” can have different internal clearances.
The listed 25 kg weight matters for delivery planning and for checking whether two people can safely move it. It is not a durability rating. A heavier mattress is not automatically more supportive, and the specification does not reveal how weight is distributed among springs, upholstery and cover materials.
How much did the SleepMaker Impulse cost?
CHOICE recorded a price of $999, with $899 available after a sale or bargaining. These are historical listed figures captured for the discontinued model, not a current recommended retail price or a guaranteed clearance offer.
For remaining stock, ask the seller to separate the mattress price from delivery, removal of your old mattress, a base and any protection plan. Get the final amount on the invoice, including GST where applicable, and confirm whether the quoted amount applies to sealed stock or a display unit. A discount is less meaningful if the mattress is old, has been used on a showroom floor or comes without a usable warranty.

How to judge a clearance quote
- Record the exact model, size and condition.
- Request the manufacture date or batch label.
- Compare the seller’s written warranty and return policy with the manufacturer’s terms.
- Price the required base and delivery separately.
- Only then compare the total with current firm queen mattresses that you can try and return.
Because the Impulse is discontinued, there is no reliable current-market price in the available record. A retailer’s present quote must be treated as a new offer, not as confirmation that the old $999 or $899 figure still applies.
What does CHOICE testing tell us?
CHOICE’s public listing includes fields for an expert rating and testing, but the rating and detailed results are restricted to members. The visible information confirms the product category and specifications; it does not support a numeric score, a ranking or claims about pressure relief, motion isolation, sagging or lifespan.

If a seller advertises a CHOICE result, ask to see the current member-accessible entry and verify that it refers to the Impulse rather than another SleepMaker model. Do not treat a retailer’s summary, a star badge or a different model’s test as evidence for this mattress.
What warranty does SleepMaker provide?
SleepMaker says its mattress warranties vary by range from five to ten years. The exact term for Impulse must therefore come from the dated sales paperwork or the manufacturer’s confirmation; the general range is not proof of this model’s coverage period.

SleepMaker’s warranty guidance identifies covered faults such as broken springs or wires, stitching faults not caused externally, broken bases and faulty legs or castors. It also recommends using a supportive base and a mattress protector. These conditions are important for a discontinued mattress because an unsuitable base or preventable damage can complicate a claim.
Common exclusions
- Discomfort or a change of comfort preference.
- Misuse, accidents, stains and other external damage.
- Normal wear and reasonable body impressions.
- Heat-related concerns.
SleepMaker also states that its goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. That statement does not turn every comfort complaint into a warranty claim: a manufacturing fault, the seller’s proof of purchase and the applicable consumer-law remedy still need to be assessed. Keep the invoice, model label, photographs and any correspondence if a defect appears.
What should you inspect before buying remaining Impulse stock?
Inspection is more important than the original specification when a discontinued mattress has been sitting in a warehouse or on a showroom floor. Use a bright light and complete the checks before signing that the item is accepted as-is.
Condition checklist
- Cover and seams: Look for fraying, pulled stitching, tears, discoloration and fabric that has been cleaned with harsh chemicals.
- Odour and moisture: Reject stock with a persistent damp, mouldy or chemical smell, and inspect packaging for water marks.
- Surface shape: Run a straight edge across the sleeping surface to identify visible hollows, ridges or uneven quilting.
- Edges and handles: Check for crushed borders, broken handles and distortion from prolonged upright storage.
- Labels: Photograph the model, size, manufacture information and any law or warranty label.
- Base compatibility: Confirm that your frame provides the support required by the seller or manufacturer and that the dimensions match.
For a floor sample, ask how many people have used it and whether it has been rotated or cleaned. If the seller cannot document its history, value it as used stock and insist on written return terms rather than relying on a verbal promise.

What do owner reviews suggest about durability?
ProductReview.com.au showed 3.7 out of 5 from 412 reviews for SleepMaker at the time of access. Those reviews include praise for comfort and support as well as complaints about firmness retention and warranty handling.
This is brand-level consumer feedback, not a controlled test of the Impulse. It can highlight issues to ask about—especially how a retailer handles a claim—but it cannot establish that the discontinued model has the same failure rate or comfort trajectory. Give more weight to a documented, model-specific return policy and the physical condition of the unit you are buying.
How should you compare the Impulse with current alternatives?
For a discontinued mattress, compare the complete purchase rather than spring count alone. A currently sold firm queen model may cost more but provide a fresh manufacture date, a defined trial period and clearer replacement support. A discounted Impulse may be attractive if it is sealed, correctly stored and covered by a written warranty that you can use.
| Comparison point | What is established for Impulse | What to verify on another mattress |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Claimed firm | Whether the retailer’s firmness description is tested or simply a label |
| Support construction | Spring mattress; 174 springs/m²; 11 layers | Spring type, zoning, edge support and layer materials |
| Profile and size | 27.5 cm; 203 x 153 cm queen | Exact dimensions and sheet requirements |
| Price | Historical $999, or $899 after sale/bargaining | Current delivered price, including base and removal |
| Availability | CHOICE: discontinued model | Whether the model is in active production |
| Warranty | SleepMaker range guidance: five to ten years; exact Impulse term not stated | Model-specific term, exclusions, claim process and transfer rules |
| Base requirement | Supportive base recommended | Required slat spacing, platform type and weight limits |
| Trial or return policy | Not stated | Length, fees, hygiene conditions and exchange limits |
| Durability evidence | Brand-level reviews only | Independent model testing and verified owner history |
Use the same checklist for every candidate: lie on it in your normal positions, read the full warranty, measure your base and confirm the return deadline in writing. This prevents a low clearance price from hiding a weak after-sale arrangement.
Is buying remaining SleepMaker Impulse stock worth it?
It can be worthwhile when the mattress is sealed or demonstrably clean, the seller provides a dated invoice and model-specific warranty, the base is suitable, and you have tried the firm feel yourself. The discontinued status is less concerning when the unit is new and the retailer will handle defects in writing.
Pass on the purchase when the mattress is an unpriced floor sample, has visible impressions or odour, lacks a manufacture date, or comes with a “no returns” condition that conflicts with your need to assess comfort. Also be cautious when the seller cannot explain whether the manufacturer warranty follows the mattress or when the base support is uncertain.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

A practical decision rule
- Fit: You can lie comfortably in your usual sleeping positions and genuinely prefer firm support.
- Condition: The unit’s history and physical state are documented.
- Protection: Warranty, consumer-law rights and return terms are written on the sale paperwork.
- Total cost: Delivery, base and old-mattress removal still make sense against current alternatives.
- Future support: You know whom to contact if a spring, wire, seam or base component fails.
If any of these five checks fails, the risk of buying old stock outweighs the appeal of the original price. If all pass, the Impulse can be a reasonable firm queen option, but the decision rests on the specific unit and seller rather than the discontinued model name alone.
How should you set up and protect the mattress?
Use a supportive base that meets the seller’s or manufacturer’s requirements, and place a properly fitted mattress protector over the cover before sleeping on it. Keep the invoice, warranty document and photographs of the labels in a safe place. Stains, misuse and unsuitable support can be excluded from warranty coverage, so prevention is part of protecting the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFollow the retailer’s handling instructions during delivery and do not accept a damaged package without recording the condition. If a problem appears, notify the seller promptly, describe the defect rather than a general comfort preference, and provide the requested proof of purchase and photographs.
What should you ask the retailer before paying?
- Is this sealed stock, warehouse clearance or a floor sample?
- What is the manufacture date and how was it stored?
- What exact warranty period applies to this model and who administers claims?
- Is the warranty transferable if the mattress is sold again?
- What return, exchange or comfort policy applies, and what fees or hygiene conditions apply?
- What base type and support spacing are required?
- Does the price include delivery, setup and removal of the old mattress?
- Will the invoice identify “SleepMaker Impulse,” queen size and the condition supplied?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still claim consumer-law rights on a discontinued mattress?
Discontinued status does not by itself remove Australian Consumer Law guarantees. Your remedy depends on the seller, the nature of the problem and whether the product was sold as new, used or faulty stock, so retain the dated invoice and describe any manufacturing defect clearly.
How can I tell whether a clearance mattress is too old to buy?
Ask for the manufacture date and storage history, then inspect packaging, odour, seams and the sleeping surface. If the seller will not document those points or refuses written return terms, the age risk is unresolved regardless of the discount.
Does the Impulse come with a sleep trial?
No trial period is established in the available product information. Treat any trial or comfort exchange as a retailer-specific policy and obtain its duration, fees and hygiene conditions in writing before delivery.
Can I use the Impulse on an existing bed base?
Only after confirming that the base is supportive, correctly sized and accepted by the seller or manufacturer. Have the retailer check the frame’s dimensions and support arrangement before the mattress is delivered.
