Verdict: the SleepMaker Alaska appears to be a reasonably comfortable, supportive Australian pocket-spring mattress, but it is a poor value at anything close to its historical retail price because the model is discontinued. Bedbuyer found the Alaska Medium comfortable with decent support, while also describing its spring system as slightly flimsy and the price as a stretch. A ProductReview owner reported rapid sagging, although one complaint cannot establish a failure rate. Treat any Alaska listing as old stock, a display model or used inventory: verify the exact firmness, inspect the mattress in person, obtain the original invoice and confirm warranty eligibility with SleepMaker before paying.
What is the SleepMaker Alaska mattress?
The Alaska was an Australian-made SleepMaker pocket-spring mattress sold in several comfort feels and sizes. It is no longer in SleepMaker’s current catalogue, so today’s listings are likely to be remaining retailer stock, a floor model or a used mattress rather than a newly produced model.

Its published specification lists 318 springs per square metre, 13 layers, a 40 kg weight and a 30 cm overall height. The queen dimensions are 203.5 × 153 × 30 cm. Bedbuyer separately reviewed an Alaska Medium and recorded Australian-made five-zone micro-pocket springs, a polyfoam-and-wool top, Climatex quilting and a KülKōte coating. Those descriptions indicate that “Alaska” was a range, not one single firmness or exact internal build.
SleepMaker says on its official site that all of its mattresses are Australian made. The company sells through independent Australian retailers, so the model name, stock condition and retailer paperwork matter as much as the brand name when you find an old listing.

What are the Alaska’s published specifications and historical prices?
The figures below come from two different listings and should not be treated as a current street price. The CHOICE entry is for a queen Alaska without a stated comfort label; Bedbuyer’s figure is for the Alaska Medium.

CHOICE also lists test categories such as support, sagging resistance, stability, breathability and wear resistance. Its detailed member scores are not publicly visible, so there is no defensible way to assign the Alaska a CHOICE performance grade from the public listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs the SleepMaker Alaska comfortable and supportive?
The best available editorial assessment is positive but qualified: Bedbuyer says the Alaska Medium is comfortable and offers decent support. That is a reviewer’s judgement, not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee that every firmness version feels the same.
Bedbuyer also describes the spring system as having a “slightly flimsy feeling.” In practical terms, that makes an in-person test especially important. Lie in your normal sleeping positions, roll from side to side and sit on the edge. A mattress that feels supportive in the centre can still have weak edge reinforcement or excessive surface movement.
Firmness is not standardized across brands. A listing marked Medium may feel firmer or softer than another manufacturer’s Medium, and the Alaska was reportedly sold in plush, medium, firm and super-firm versions. Couples should test the exact unit and comfort label rather than relying on a generic “firm” description attached to the Alaska name.

What firmnesses and sizes were sold?
Bedbuyer records plush, medium, firm and super-firm options, with sizes from single through super-king. CHOICE’s queen entry is labelled claimed firm, while Bedbuyer’s review concerns the Medium. Ask the seller to photograph the law tag or model label so you can confirm which feel and size you are actually buying.

- Size: verify single, king-single, double, queen, king or super-king dimensions; do not infer the size from photographs.
- Height: use the measured mattress depth when choosing sheets and a protector. The 30 cm figure is the published CHOICE queen specification, not proof that every Alaska variant has identical height.
- Base fit: check that your existing frame supports the mattress evenly across its surface and that the frame’s dimensions match the mattress size.
Is SleepMaker Alaska discontinued?
Yes. CHOICE marks the Alaska as discontinued, and it does not appear in SleepMaker’s current catalogue, which instead lists collections such as Elements, Lifestyle, Performance, Luxury, Miracoil, Osteo and ACA. SleepMaker’s terms explain that products can be withdrawn or changed and that retailer stock and prices vary by state and store.
A retailer’s “new” label can therefore mean new old stock rather than a recently manufactured mattress. A display model may have been used by many shoppers, while a private-sale mattress may have been slept on for years. Have the seller state the condition on the invoice and provide the manufacture or purchase date.
What warranty does an Alaska mattress have?
Bedbuyer recorded a 10-year warranty for the Alaska Medium, but the existence of that statement does not prove that every Alaska variant, seller or second-hand transaction still has coverage. SleepMaker says warranties vary from five to 10 years by range and that proof of purchase is required for a claim.

- Ask for the original retail invoice showing the model, size, purchase date and retailer.
- Ask the seller for the exact comfort version and any serial, law-tag or manufacturing information visible on the mattress.
- Contact SleepMaker customer care with those details and ask whether the warranty applies to that model, whether it is still within its term and whether it transfers to you.
- Get the answer in writing, including any conditions about the base, protector, removal, inspection or transport.
- Keep the invoice, photographs of the label and dated photographs of the mattress surface after delivery.
SleepMaker’s post-purchase guidance describes a free five- or 10-year warranty against faulty workmanship and materials and recommends rotating a new mattress during break-in. A warranty is not the same as a comfort guarantee, retailer trial or automatic refund right; those terms must come from the seller.
How should you inspect an old-stock or used Alaska?
Inspection is more important than the brand name when the model is discontinued. Do not rely on a clean showroom photograph or a seller’s claim that the mattress was “barely used.”
Check the identity
- Photograph the law tag, model name, size and firmness label.
- Match the physical dimensions to the listing and to your bed base.
- Ask whether it is sealed new old stock, a display model, a customer return or used stock.
Check the surface and edges
- Run a straightedge or your hand across the sleeping surface to find body impressions.
- Look for sagging in the centre, compressed corners, edge collapse, stains, mould, tears, smoke odour and pet or pest evidence.
- Press along both long edges and sit near the edge to detect unusual roll-off or loss of support.
- Inspect handles, seams, quilting and the underside for frame or transport damage.
Check the paperwork and price
- Require the original receipt and a written condition statement.
- Ask the seller to identify any remaining warranty and whether SleepMaker has confirmed it.
- Compare the asking price with current mattresses in SleepMaker’s replacement ranges, not just the Alaska’s old RRP.
- Walk away if the seller will not disclose age, condition or proof of purchase.
Why might an Alaska be sagging, and what should you do?
ProductReview displays a 3.3 rating for the SleepMaker Alaska Medium Queen and includes one account alleging that the mattress sagged within weeks, was sent for repair and sagged again soon after return. That is an anecdotal report from one owner, not a measured failure rate or proof that all Alaska mattresses sag.
If your mattress develops a visible depression, document it before moving or rotating the mattress. Photograph the surface with a straightedge across the affected area, record the purchase date and describe the base used. Check that the base has not broken or bowed, because an uneven foundation can create or exaggerate a dip.
Then contact the retailer and SleepMaker through the warranty process. SleepMaker customer-care guidance says proof of purchase is required and provides a process for sinking complaints. Do not discard the law tag or alter the mattress before the inspection instructions are complete.

How does the Alaska compare with a current replacement?
Because the Alaska is discontinued and public performance scores are incomplete, a fair comparison should focus on the actual unit and the seller’s terms rather than on an old headline price. Use the following checklist when comparing a current SleepMaker model or another brand.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort feel | Is the label Plush, Medium, Firm or Super-Firm, and can both sleepers test it? | Firmness labels are not standardized. |
| Spring and support design | What spring type, zoning and edge support are specified? | Construction affects pressure distribution and edge stability. |
| Motion isolation | Can one person turn or get up without disturbing the other? | Important for couples; do not infer it from spring count alone. |
| Temperature management | What quilting, fibre and cover materials are used? | Surface materials influence perceived warmth and airflow. |
| Thickness and base compatibility | What is the measured depth, and does the manufacturer approve your base? | Height affects sheets, bed height and support. |
| Warranty | How long is coverage, what defects qualify and does it transfer? | A discontinued mattress may have difficult-to-prove coverage. |
| Trial or exchange policy | Is there a retailer trial, exchange fee or final-sale condition? | Useful protection when firmness is uncertain. |
| Delivered price | Does the quote include delivery, old-mattress removal and setup? | A low listing price can hide logistics costs. |
| Evidence quality | Are claims based on a named review, a controlled test or owner anecdotes? | Prevents treating one complaint or marketing claim as a population statistic. |
Do not compare CHOICE scores unless you have access to the underlying member data. The publicly visible Alaska entry supplies specifications and test categories, not the numerical results.
Is a used SleepMaker Alaska worth buying?
A used Alaska can make sense only when the discount compensates for age, uncertain warranty and the risk of hidden wear. The decision is primarily about condition and documentation, not the original $1,899 or $1,999 reference price.
It may be reasonable when
- The mattress is clean, odour-free and free of measurable impressions or edge collapse.
- You have tested the exact firmness and both sleepers are comfortable.
- The seller supplies a dated invoice and SleepMaker confirms any remaining warranty.
- The price is substantially below a current replacement with a comparable warranty and delivery policy.
Decline when
- The seller cannot identify the comfort version or purchase date.
- The mattress has stains, mould, smoke or pet odour, visible sagging or damaged seams.
- The seller refuses an in-person inspection or wants payment before you see the law tag.
- The price is close to a new mattress that includes a trial or clearer warranty.
For hygiene and support reasons, a used mattress should be treated as a higher-risk purchase than a used bed frame. If you proceed, budget for a queen waterproof mattress protector where appropriate and inspect the base before the first night.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you set up and care for an Alaska?
Use a flat, evenly supportive base that matches the mattress size. A broken slat, bowed platform or unsupported gap can undermine comfort and may complicate a warranty claim. Follow SleepMaker’s guidance to rotate a new mattress during its break-in period, and ask customer care for the correct schedule for your specific version.

A queen waterproof mattress protector is the most directly relevant accessory. SleepMaker recommends considering a mattress protector, and a properly sized protector helps guard the cover from sweat and spills without implying that an Alaska-branded protector exists. Confirm the protector’s depth against your measured mattress height rather than assuming every 30 cm mattress has identical dimensions.
Keep the law tag, invoice and warranty correspondence. If you move house, photograph the mattress before wrapping it and avoid folding or sharply bending it unless SleepMaker’s handling instructions expressly allow that method.
What are the Alaska’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Limitations and risks |
|---|---|
| Australian-made construction according to SleepMaker’s official statement. | Discontinued, so new supply and replacement parts or matching comfort versions may be limited. |
| Bedbuyer found the reviewed Medium comfortable with decent support. | Bedbuyer described the spring system as slightly flimsy and considered the price high for what it offered. |
| Multiple comfort feels and sizes were recorded for the range. | Listings can omit the exact feel, age, condition or dimensions. |
| Published queen specifications are unusually concrete: 30 cm, 40 kg, 13 layers and 318 springs per square metre. | CHOICE’s public page does not reveal the numerical test scores. |
| A 10-year warranty was recorded for the Alaska Medium review. | Warranty eligibility, transferability and proof-of-purchase requirements must be confirmed for each listing. |
What should you ask the seller before paying?
- “Is this Alaska Plush, Medium, Firm or Super-Firm?” Ask for a photograph of the label.
- “What is the exact size and measured thickness?” Compare it with your frame and fitted sheets.
- “Is it sealed old stock, a display model, a return or used?” Have the answer written on the invoice.
- “What is the original purchase or manufacture date?”
- “Can I see the original invoice and warranty terms?”
- “Has SleepMaker confirmed that the warranty applies to this serial or model and to a new owner?”
- “Can I inspect the surface, edges, underside and base before payment?”
- “What are the delivery, setup, return and removal terms?”
If any answer is missing, price the mattress as an unsupported used item rather than as a discounted new product. That distinction prevents the old RRP from anchoring your decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Alaska warranty cover normal softening or only defects?
SleepMaker describes its free five- or 10-year coverage as protection against faulty workmanship and materials. The available information does not establish how ordinary comfort changes are assessed, so ask customer care for the written definition that applies to your model before relying on coverage.
Can I return an Alaska bought from an online marketplace?
Return rights come from the seller and the transaction terms, not simply from the SleepMaker warranty. Ask whether the listing is final sale, who pays collection costs and whether a trial or exchange period exists before arranging delivery.
How can I prove a sagging complaint?
Keep the original invoice and law-tag photographs, then take dated images showing a straightedge across the depression and the supporting base underneath. Contact the retailer or SleepMaker before repairing, cutting or removing any part of the mattress.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the published 30 cm depth guaranteed for every Alaska?
No. The 30 cm measurement is the public CHOICE specification for its queen entry. Measure the individual mattress you are buying, especially when ordering deep-pocket sheets or a protector.
