Buy Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (the 2014 remaster), install it from the store for your platform, then choose Main Story → Start a New Game. It is available on Windows PC, macOS, Xbox One (listed for Xbox Series X|S), and PlayStation 4. This edition includes 24 previously released DLC packs and the remaster’s visual, audio, ambience and gameplay improvements. Which version of Sleeping Dogs should you buy?
Buy Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, not the 2012 original, unless you deliberately want the older PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 release. The remaster launched in October 2014 for Windows, Xbox One and PS4, with the macOS port following on 31 March 2016. It rebuilds the game for newer hardware rather than merely increasing resolution.
The edition includes 24 previously released DLC packs, including Year of the Snake, Nightmare in North Point, Zodiac Tournament and Wheels of Fury, plus smaller clothing, vehicle and mission content. Gold Top Dog and Silver Top Dog XP-boost packs were removed because they were considered unfair. The original DLC collection’s advertised value was $85, according to Polygon’s 2014 coverage. Every original DLC item is present except the Valve T-Shirt Pack; on PC, the unofficial Lotus Patch can restore those shirts.

United Front Games senior producer Dan Sochan described the goal in a 2014 press release quoted by Polygon: “We’re giving old and new fans a lot reasons to pick up the game, as we’ve gone beyond just increasing resolution and running at 1080p.” He added: “We listened to the fans: We tuned gameplay, we added to the ambience of Hong Kong, increased audio fidelity and pushed the visuals further than we could on the previous generation of consoles.”

How do I play Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition on Windows PC?
Windows is the most configurable version. You can use keyboard and mouse or an XInput gamepad, install from an offline GOG installer, or use Steam’s library flow. GOG is the simplest choice when you want a copy that works without an internet connection after download.

These are the published Windows requirements from Steam, GOG and PCGamingWiki. Steam’s client itself has supported Windows 10 and later since 1 January 2024, even though the game’s historical store requirements list older 64-bit Windows versions. A 64-bit operating system is therefore the practical baseline for a current Steam installation.
Steam or GOG: which PC release fits?
Steam uses Steam DRM and is region-locked in Germany. Copies purchased elsewhere cannot be installed or played while located in Germany. Steam Cloud saves were added on 18 December 2025, according to PCGamingWiki’s SteamDB citation.
GOG’s release has no DRM and can be played offline. The GOG FAQ states: “No! GOG games have no DRM and can be played without an internet connection, totally offline.” GOG Galaxy is optional: you can download and run the offline installer without the Galaxy client. Galaxy adds optional achievements, cloud features and an overlay.
On Windows, GOG does not support DirectInput controllers. Use an XInput pad, such as an Xbox-style controller. The 2012 original is a separate app with different requirements and is not the edition to choose for the integrated DLC and remaster improvements.

How to launch it from Steam
- Open Steam, sign in and select Library.
- Highlight Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition and choose Play.
- Complete any first-run setup. The Mac build shows a pre-game Options window; Windows may go directly to the game setup.
- At the title screen, press Return or Enter.
- Acknowledge the autosave notice.
- Set brightness so the logo is barely visible, then configure sound, subtitles and UI scale.
- Choose Main Story, then Start a New Game.
The opening sequence has Wei Shen fleeing a drug bust through Victoria Harbour. To uninstall through Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Manage, then Uninstall.
How to launch it from GOG
- Download the offline installer from your GOG library, or install through GOG Galaxy.
- Run the installer and accept the end-user licence agreement.
- Launch the game from the installed shortcut or Galaxy.
- Complete brightness, audio, subtitle and UI-scale setup.
- Select Main Story → Start a New Game.

Driving uses WASD for acceleration, braking and steering, Space for the handbrake, and Shift for ramming or reloading. Feral notes that gamepad controls cannot be customized.
Should you use a controller on PC?
An XInput gamepad is the smoothest PC alternative to keyboard and mouse, with Xbox button prompts and full controller support. Feral recommends a gamepad for the Mac version. DualShock 3 and 4 support is listed as proper on macOS, but DualShock 4 on Windows relies on DirectInput and has semi-broken mappings. Nintendo controllers are not natively mapped. A community PlayStation-controller mod exists if you want to use a DualShock on Windows.
One PCGamingWiki note says the keyboard-and-mouse camera zoom-in while sprinting does not occur with a controller. That is a small control difference, not a separate gameplay mode.
How do I play the macOS version?
Feral Interactive’s Mac port released on 31 March 2016 and is sold through Steam and the Mac App Store. Its minimum specification is Mac OS X 10.10.5, a 2 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, a 1 GB GPU and 20 GB of storage. The recommended specification is OS X 10.11.2, a 2.8 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM, a 2 GB GPU and a gamepad.

Feral lists AMD Radeon HD 5xxx/4xxx, ATI X1xxx, ATI HD2xxx, Intel GMA, HD5000, HD4000, HD5300, Iris 5100, HD3000, Iris 6100 and Nvidia 1xx/8xxx/3xx/9xxx/7xxx series as unsupported GPUs. Check that list before purchasing a Mac copy.
On Steam, open Library, select the game and click Play. The Mac pre-game Options window lets you adjust video settings, pause iTunes, set Messages to away and generate a support report. Press Return at the title screen, complete the first-time setup and choose Main Story → Start a New Game.

How do I play it on Xbox or Xbox Series X|S?
The game is an Xbox One release that is listed in the current Xbox Series X|S catalog. Treat it as the Xbox One Definitive Edition running on modern Xbox hardware; the available information does not establish a separate Series X|S remaster, Smart Delivery label, frame-rate mode or Game Pass inclusion.
- Buy Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition from the Microsoft Store or redeem a legitimate Xbox key.
- Download and install it from the Xbox library.

The Xbox release uses native Xbox-controller prompts. The published Feral control table is the closest documented generic gamepad map: left stick moves, face buttons handle light and heavy attacks and interaction, triggers aim and fire, a bumper provides cover, stick click provides alternate fire, and D-pad down stows the pistol. The game remains a single-player campaign on Xbox.
How do I play it on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5?
PlayStation’s current product is the PS4 Definitive Edition. Buy or download it from the PlayStation Store, install it from your PS4 library and launch Main Story → Start a New Game. A DualShock 4 is the native controller.
No native PS5 SKU was listed, and the available information does not confirm backward compatibility for a PS4 disc or digital licence on PS5. If you own a PS5, verify compatibility in Sony’s current catalogue before buying specifically for that console.
Nightmare in North Point and Year of the Snake appear as separate story entries on the main menu after installation. The rest of the integrated DLC is accessed through the game’s regular world and activities.

Chain up to four light strikes, finish with a heavy strike, and press the counter input when an enemy glows red. Grapple with F, drag an opponent to a red-highlighted object and press F for an environmental kill, or throw the enemy with E. From cover, pressing Space vaults over it and slows time for gunfire.
2. Understand the three XP tracks
- Face XP: Earned through favors and stylish play. It unlocks shop discounts, better cars and clothes, and combat buffs tied to the Face meter.
- Triad XP: Earned through stylish combat and unlocks additional melee moves. Replay missions from the Social Hub when you want to improve a Triad score.
- Cop XP: Earned through clean case and police missions. Civilian, property or police damage reduces the award; upgrades include firearm perks, slim-jim access and police-car weapon stashes.
Completing favors is Feral’s recommended way to increase Face. Replay missions from the Social Hub to improve Triad and Cop results.

3. Manage heat and health
Criminal actions raise a wanted meter to five. Break line of sight and hide to let heat fall. Food and drinks restore health and can add temporary effects: herbal tea makes Wei tougher, an energy drink increases damage, and a massage fills the Face meter faster.
4. Use the phone and map
The phone opens contacts, messages, reports and Social Hub functions. On the map, green markers are story missions, blue markers are cases, orange markers are races and yellow markers are favors.
5. Collect jade statues and health shrines
Return jade statues to Sifu Kwok’s North Point dojo to unlock combat moves. Every five red health-shrine prayers increase maximum health by 10%; the increase appears as a blue bar.
6. Change clothes and use set bonuses

The package combines the main undercover-cop campaign with the previously released expansion and bonus content. You play Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American undercover officer infiltrating the Sun On Yee triad in contemporary Hong Kong. The open world includes martial-arts melee, scarce gunfights, parkour, cars, motorcycles, boats, karaoke, street races, dating and police heat.
- Nightmare in North Point: A supernatural horror story with jiangshi enemies.
- Year of the Snake: A post-story campaign involving a cult, taser tools and arrests.

Improve performance in the game’s settings
- Lower resolution first; Feral identifies this as the largest potential gain.
- Reduce the overall Graphics Level.
- Turn V-Sync off if synchronization is limiting performance.
- Lower anti-aliasing quality, shadow resolution and shadow filtering.
- Reduce SSAO, motion blur and world density.
- Enable low-resolution buffers.
- Close other applications, free disk space, disconnect a second monitor and connect a laptop to its charger.
Frame-rate and tearing notes
In-engine cutscenes are internally capped near 59.94 frames per second and can duplicate frames; SPatch can address that issue. Gameplay is uncapped, but PCGamingWiki notes that semi-automatic single shots can fire twice above 120 FPS. Use the in-game limiter when your refresh rate is divisible by 60, or cap the frame rate externally. On Windows 10, a community workaround for tearing is a 58 FPS cap when in-game V-Sync does not solve it.
Optional community patches
Lotus Patch addresses assorted bugs, adds a Mouse4 binding, borderless-window support and intro skipping. SPatch adds cutscene 60 Hz handling, SMAA, VRAM detection and damage-visual fixes. These are unofficial enhancements, not prerequisites; keep a backup of saves before changing files.

How does saving work?
The game autosaves after the autosave notice and during progression. On Windows Steam, save files use names such as HK Autosave* and HK GameSlot* in the install folder. Nightmare in North Point uses HK AutosaveG/HK GameSlotG, while Year of the Snake uses HK AutosaveN/HK GameSlotN. GOG saves are under the Save folder, and Windows and OS X saves are compatible.

The campaign is single-player only. The game does provide online leaderboards and friend challenges, but there is no cooperative or competitive story mode.
Can I play the GOG version without installing GOG Galaxy?
