Skyscanner is usually the better starting point for a flexible trip because it compares airlines, online travel agencies, airports, dates and connection patterns in one place. Expedia is often more convenient when you want an in-platform booking relationship, price history and predicted-price tools, or a hotel, package or other travel purchase alongside the flight. Neither service guarantees the lowest final cost. Skyscanner sends you to the airline or travel provider that will issue the ticket, while Expedia keeps eligible bookings in its own checkout. Compare the complete fare, baggage, seat charges, change rules and cancellation terms before paying.
What is the difference between Skyscanner and Expedia?
Skyscanner is a metasearch and comparison service. It searches airlines, online travel agencies, hotels, car-hire companies, rail operators, package providers and other travel sites, then sends you to the selected provider to finish payment and booking. Skyscanner says, “You’ll never book directly with Skyscanner.” The provider that issues the booking handles confirmation, changes, cancellations and post-booking support.

Which is cheaper: Skyscanner or Expedia?
Skyscanner reported that its comparison found a cheaper flight option in 70% of selected comparisons. The figure comes from Skyscanner’s 2026 analysis of economy return searches across 19 markets, with 50 high-demand routes per market, 13 search-to-travel periods, two trip durations and one adult traveler. It is a result for that defined sample, not a promise that Skyscanner will be cheaper for every route or date.

- Comprehensive Cruising Guide: Be an Informed Traveler
- Self-Guided Tours Await
- Navigating to City Centers from Port
- User-Friendly Maps
The comparison also has an important qualification: Skyscanner warns that the options may not be like-for-like. A lower headline fare can have a different baggage allowance, airport, connection, ticketing company, payment condition or change policy. Expedia’s displayed price-history values include taxes and fees, but exclude add-ons such as checked bags and paid seats unless those items were included in the search. Skyscanner likewise warns that costs appearing later in the booking process may not be visible in the initial result.
How to interpret the 70% figure
- It describes selected economy return searches, not every class of travel or one-way itinerary.
- The analysis covered 19 markets and 50 high-demand routes in each market.
- It used 13 search-to-travel periods and two trip durations.
- It modeled one adult traveler.
- It does not establish a permanent price advantage. Airfares fluctuate, inventory disappears and different providers can display different fare conditions.
Use the statistic as a reason to check Skyscanner, not as a reason to stop comparing. Open the final checkout for the best-looking result and compare its total with Expedia and, when practical, the airline’s own fare for the same flights and conditions.

Skyscanner does not take payment for the flight. It helps you identify an itinerary, then passes you to the provider selected from the results. Follow this sequence so you know exactly who is responsible for the ticket.
- Enter the trip. Choose a return, one-way or multi-city search, then enter airports, dates, travelers and cabin. If your dates or airports are flexible, use the relevant flexibility tools before narrowing the results.
- Compare the result cards. Check departure and arrival airports, connection length, number of stops, operating airlines, baggage wording and the provider name. A low fare can represent a different airport or a longer connection.
- Open the fare details. Look for the rules shown before the redirect, including whether bags, seat selection or other extras are included. Treat these as an initial view rather than a final invoice.
- Choose the provider. Selecting a result sends you to the airline, online travel agency or another listed seller. Skyscanner says it does not sell the flight itself; providers pay a referral fee when users click through.
- Recheck everything at checkout. Confirm the total, currency, passenger names, baggage, seats, connection airports, ticket restrictions and cancellation terms on the provider’s page.
- Save the confirmation. The provider’s confirmation number and support channel are what you need for a change, cancellation, refund or schedule disruption.
What happens if there is a problem?
Contact the provider that issued the booking, not Skyscanner. Skyscanner can help you identify the provider or explain how its search works, but the seller holding the reservation controls ticket changes, refunds and its own service process. Your confirmation email normally identifies that seller.
How does booking through Expedia work?
Expedia combines search and, for eligible products, payment in the same booking flow. This can reduce the number of companies involved when you need help, although the fare’s airline rules and Expedia’s booking conditions still apply.
Rank #2
- Search the route and dates. Enter the travelers, cabin and itinerary, then review the available flights.
- Use the tracking information. Expedia offers price alerts, historical price information and predicted prices. Its prediction model considers booking window, departure day, the number of airlines and whether the route is domestic or international.
- Inspect the fare. Confirm taxes and fees, baggage, seats, change restrictions and cancellation terms. Expedia states that price-history values include taxes and fees but do not automatically include optional checked bags or paid seats.
- Complete the eligible Expedia checkout. Enter traveler and payment details, then wait for ticketing to finish. Expedia states that ticket prices may fluctuate minute-to-minute and that no fare is guaranteed until ticketing is complete.
- Keep the Expedia itinerary and ticket number. Use the support path in the booking account or confirmation when you need help, and follow any airline-specific instructions shown for the ticket.
“Eligible” matters because booking arrangements can differ by product and provider. Read the checkout terms for the exact itinerary rather than assuming every Expedia listing has identical support or refund handling.

Which service is better for flexible dates, airports and routes?
Skyscanner has the broader set of tools for exploring an uncertain trip. Its Whole Month view helps reveal cheaper departure and return combinations, Everywhere lets you search destinations by price, and Multi-City supports an itinerary with more than one stopover city. You can also compare nearby airports, filter by layover patterns, create Price Alerts and save options in Saved Lists.
When Skyscanner’s flexibility tools are useful
- Your destination is undecided: Everywhere can show how far a fixed budget may go.
- Your dates are movable: Whole Month exposes fare differences across the calendar instead of forcing a single date pair.
- You can use more than one airport: Nearby-airport results may reveal a lower fare, but check ground transport time and cost yourself.
- You are building an open-jaw or multi-stop trip: Multi-City can surface combinations that a simple return search will miss.
- You are willing to accept a connection: Layover filters let you balance price against total travel time.
Expedia’s tools are more useful after you have a route or a reasonably defined date range. Price history shows how a displayed fare compares with recent levels, while predicted prices indicate Expedia’s estimate of likely movement. Both tools support a timing decision; neither locks the fare.
How should I compare the real price at checkout?
Compare identical itineraries and identical conditions, not just the first number in a search result. Work through this checklist for both services:
- Flight identity: Match flight numbers, operating carrier, airports and connection points.
- Traveler details: Confirm the number of adults, children and infants, since the result may change with the passenger mix.
- Baggage: Check the carry-on and checked-bag allowance for every flight segment. Add the cost of bags you actually need.
- Seats: Include paid seat selection if your group must sit together.
- Taxes and fees: Verify the total on the final payment screen. Expedia says its price-history figures include taxes and fees; optional items are separate unless included in the search.
- Payment conditions: Look for provider-specific payment or service charges that appear during checkout.
- Change and cancellation rules: A cheaper restricted fare can be a poor value if your plans are uncertain.
- Currency and refund route: Note who charges your card and where a refund would be sent if the itinerary is canceled.
Take a screenshot or save the final fare breakdown before payment. Prices and inventory can change while you move between comparison and checkout, so the amount shown at the payment step is the amount that matters.

Who provides customer support after purchase?
The booking relationship determines your first support contact. A Skyscanner search can end with an airline, online travel agency or another travel seller; that provider owns the reservation and must process changes, cancellations and refunds. Expedia bookings made through its eligible checkout generally keep support in the Expedia relationship, but the airline’s fare rules still determine what can be changed.
Use this support decision tree
- Find the confirmation issuer. Check the email, itinerary or card charge for the company that ticketed the booking.
- Contact that company first. Have the booking reference, passenger name and ticket number ready.
- Check the fare rule before requesting a change. The seller may be able to change the itinerary only within the restrictions set by the airline or other provider.
- Escalate with records. Keep the confirmation, payment receipt, chat transcripts and any schedule-change notices if the issue is not resolved promptly.
Using a comparison service does not make it the ticketing agent. Misunderstanding that distinction is one of the most common causes of delayed help after a booking.
Are Expedia’s price predictions and Skyscanner alerts reliable?
They are monitoring aids, not guarantees. Expedia says its predicted prices are based on historical and itinerary factors and explicitly warns that they are not guarantees. It also says ticket prices may fluctuate minute-to-minute and no fare is guaranteed until ticketing is complete.
Skyscanner’s Price Alerts notify you when the tracked fare changes, while Saved Lists let you retain options for later review. An alert tells you that the observed price moved; it does not reserve inventory or preserve the earlier fare. When an alert arrives, reopen the itinerary and verify the complete fare before deciding.
Which service should I choose for common trip scenarios?
| Your situation | Better first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dates, destination or airports are flexible | Skyscanner | Whole Month, Everywhere, nearby-airport and Multi-City searches expose more combinations. |
| You want to compare many airlines and travel sellers | Skyscanner | Its metasearch model aggregates providers and redirects you to the selected seller. |
| You want price history and predicted prices for a defined route | Expedia | Expedia documents both tools alongside price alerts. |
| You prefer a single platform for an eligible booking | Expedia | The transaction remains within Expedia’s checkout for eligible products. |
| You are comparing a hotel, package or other travel product with the flight | Either, based on the exact inventory | Skyscanner compares hotels, car hire, rail and packages; Expedia is a broad online travel booking platform. Check the complete combined terms. |
| You need the lowest total cost for a specific itinerary | Check both | Skyscanner’s 70% result is not universal, and add-ons or provider conditions can reverse the headline-price ranking. |
What pitfalls can make a cheap fare expensive?
A different airport or connection
A result may be cheaper because it uses a nearby airport or a longer layover. Confirm the airport code, transfer requirements and total journey time before treating it as equivalent.
Rank #4
Optional extras added late
Checked bags and paid seats may be excluded from the initial display. Add the extras you genuinely need to both options; otherwise you are comparing different products.
Different sellers with different support
Two identical flights can be sold by different providers. Read the seller name and its terms before clicking through from Skyscanner, and know which company you will contact afterward.
Assuming a prediction is a hold
Expedia’s prediction and either service’s alert do not lock inventory. If the itinerary is time-sensitive, a later check can show a different fare.
Stopping at the search result
The displayed result is not the final contract. Continue to the payment page, check ticketing status and save the issued confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Skyscanner better than Expedia for every traveler?
No. Skyscanner is the stronger discovery tool when flexibility and breadth matter, while Expedia can be the more convenient choice when its direct booking flow, price history, predicted prices, hotel or package inventory, or rewards ecosystem fits your trip. The best choice can change from one itinerary to the next.

A practical approach is to search flexible ideas on Skyscanner, use Expedia’s tracking information for a defined route, then compare the final checkout totals and rules. Choose the option whose complete cost and support arrangement match your priorities, rather than the service with the lower first number.
What is the safest final decision process?
- Define the acceptable itinerary. Set limits for airports, stops, travel time, baggage and flexibility before comparing prices.
- Search Skyscanner for breadth. Use flexible tools where appropriate and note the provider attached to each attractive result.
- Check Expedia for the same itinerary. Review its price history, prediction and alert options, then open the exact fare.
- Normalize the totals. Add baggage, seats, payment charges and any other required extras.
- Read the rules. Compare cancellation, change, refund and support conditions in the final checkout.
- Book only when the issuer is clear. Save the confirmation and ticket number immediately after ticketing.
This process uses Skyscanner for its comparison breadth and Expedia for its booking and tracking features without assuming either service will always win on price.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book directly with an airline after finding a flight on Skyscanner?
Yes. Skyscanner’s result may include the airline as one of the providers, and you can select that listing if it is available. Check that the airline’s checkout shows the same flight, fare conditions and total before paying.
How do I know which company to contact for a Skyscanner booking?
Look at the confirmation email, itinerary and card charge for the provider that issued the ticket. That company, rather than Skyscanner, is the correct first contact for a change, cancellation or refund request.
Do Expedia price predictions reserve today’s fare?
No. Expedia describes predictions as estimates, and says prices can fluctuate minute-to-minute until ticketing is complete. A prediction or alert should prompt a fresh checkout check, not be treated as a price hold.
Why can two sites show different totals for the same flight?
The listings may differ in baggage, seat selection, service or payment charges, fare restrictions, or the provider selling the ticket. Compare the final payment screens with the same extras and rules included.
What should I save after purchasing a flight?
Keep the ticket number, booking reference, passenger names, fare conditions, payment receipt and the issuer’s support details. These records make it easier to request help if the itinerary changes or you need a refund.
