SK hynix’s third-quarter 2026 operating profit jumped 632% year over year to 83.3338 trillion won, the result behind headlines saying profit rose seven-fold. Revenue passed 100 trillion won for the first time, reaching 104.6155 trillion won, while net income rose 216% to 39.7756 trillion won. The figures show that demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DDR5 and data-center storage is exceptionally strong. They do not, however, prove that the AI spending cycle is permanent: investors are still weighing hyperscaler funding, new memory capacity, Chinese competition and the risk that long-term contracts limit price upside.

Why did SK hynix’s profit jump seven-fold?

The “seven-fold” description refers to operating profit, not net income. SK hynix reported 83.3338 trillion won in operating profit for 3Q26, up from 11.3834 trillion won a year earlier. That is a 632% year-over-year increase. Net income was 39.7756 trillion won, up 216%, and the operating margin reached 80%.

Revenue increased to 104.6155 trillion won, making it the company’s first quarter above 100 trillion won. The surge came as customers paid higher prices for memory products needed in AI servers, where demand has outpaced available supply.

Which products drove the quarter?

  • DRAM: Server DDR5 sales accelerated, and initial HBM4 shipments added to the mix.
  • HBM: High-bandwidth memory used alongside AI accelerators remained the highest-value part of the portfolio.
  • NAND: Revenue grew through 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs and other high-capacity data-center products.

SK hynix says AI-driven productivity gains and new revenue streams are encouraging technology companies to keep investing in infrastructure. It also points to the technical difficulty of leading-edge processes and the long time required to build factories as reasons supply cannot quickly catch up.

Is the AI memory boom real or a bubble?

The current demand is real in the sense that customers are placing large orders and paying premium prices for HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs. SK hynix says major technology companies continue to request additional memory, while its President Song Hyun-jong told Reuters that “major customers are still requesting more memory supply.”

The unresolved question is durability. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle have announced plans involving hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. After SK hynix’s previous quarter, its record result still missed a high analyst forecast and the shares fell about 9.6% in one day, according to Reuters. Investors worried that hyperscalers could slow projects, struggle to generate enough AI-service revenue to fund them, or reduce orders if returns disappoint.

That makes the earnings report reassuring but not conclusive. A strong quarter demonstrates pricing power and demand today; it does not establish how long spending will continue at the same pace.

What does the report mean for HBM4 and DDR5?

SK hynix expects HBM4 to overtake HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026, becoming its mainstream HBM product. That transition matters because each HBM generation requires difficult process, packaging and validation work, and customers must qualify the memory for particular AI systems.

HBM4’s significance

HBM4 is designed for newer AI accelerators that need more memory bandwidth. If the company’s forecast holds, the product mix will shift rapidly from HBM3E to HBM4 late in 2026. This is management guidance, not an independently verified shipment forecast, and actual timing depends on customer qualification and production yields.

Server DDR5’s role

Server DDR5 is less specialized than HBM but essential to the general-purpose memory surrounding AI systems. Its sales helped lift DRAM results in the quarter, showing that the AI build-out is increasing demand beyond accelerator-attached memory alone.

For buyers comparing modules, “SK hynix DDR5 memory” can refer to the underlying DRAM used in servers or to a finished DDR5 module made by another supplier. Compatibility depends on the server platform, capacity, registered or unbuffered design and required error-correction features; the earnings report does not guarantee availability or pricing for a particular retail module.

How long could the memory shortage last?

SK hynix says demand is ahead of supply and expects that shortage structure to persist through 2030. The company attributes the outlook to difficult leading-edge manufacturing and the long lead time for new production facilities. This is a corporate forecast, not an independently verified guarantee.

Capacity is expanding, but new wafer and packaging output takes years to plan, finance, build and qualify. SK hynix also says 321-layer NAND should account for more than half of its domestic capacity in the fourth quarter of 2026. Higher-layer NAND can increase bits produced per wafer, although the transition itself carries yield and execution risks.

Why could SK hynix shares fall after record profit?

Memory stocks are priced on expectations for future earnings, not only on the quarter just reported. A result can be historically strong and still disappoint if analysts expected even more, if guidance implies slower growth, or if investors fear that new capacity will eventually push prices down.

Reuters’ report of the earlier 9.6% one-day decline illustrates that sensitivity. Investors were concerned about the ability of major cloud companies to finance planned AI infrastructure. AP has also highlighted heavy capacity investment and intensifying Chinese competition. Because Samsung and SK hynix together account for about two-thirds of global memory-chip production, their investment decisions can influence the entire cycle.

Do long-term contracts make earnings safer?

SK hynix says agreements with 14 major customers cover more than half of its planned 2027–2028 production. That gives the company better visibility into demand and can reduce the risk of an abrupt order collapse.

The trade-off is pricing flexibility. Contracted volumes may be less exposed to short-term spot-price spikes, so a company with more committed production could capture less upside during a sudden shortage. The agreements improve planning certainty, but they do not remove customer concentration, renegotiation or demand risks.

What are SK hynix’s shareholder-return plans?

SK hynix plans approximately 100 trillion won in 2026 shareholder returns, including dividends, share repurchases and cancellations. The company says the program is tied partly to gains from its investment in Kioxia. The stated amount is a company plan for 2026, not a recurring annual payout promise.

Investors should therefore separate operating performance from capital allocation. The 80% operating margin reflects the current memory pricing environment, while buybacks, cancellations and investment-related gains affect how much cash is returned and how many shares remain outstanding.

  • NAND execution: progress in 321-layer production and enterprise-SSD demand.
  • Contract coverage: how much output is committed and how much remains available for spot pricing.
  • Capital intensity: whether new factories and packaging capacity arrive without creating excess supply.
  • Cash generation: whether strong operating cash flow supports investment and the announced shareholder returns.

On the evidence available in 3Q26, AI memory demand is producing an exceptional earnings cycle. The open issue is whether infrastructure spending, pricing and supply discipline can keep that cycle intact as capacity expands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of SK hynix’s 2027–2028 output is already contracted?

The company says long-term agreements with 14 major customers cover more than half of planned production for those two years. It has not disclosed the exact percentage above 50% or the pricing terms for each agreement.

What is the difference between HBM4 and HBM3E for AI servers?

They are successive generations of high-bandwidth memory used with AI accelerators. HBM4 is the newer generation that SK hynix expects to become its mainstream product in the fourth quarter of 2026, but customer qualification and production yields determine the practical ramp.

Could Chinese memory production end the shortage sooner?

Additional Chinese capacity is one of the competitive risks investors are watching, but the earnings information does not quantify how much usable HBM or advanced server memory it could supply. Process capability, yields, export restrictions and customer qualification all affect the timing.

Does a high operating margin guarantee future SK hynix dividends?

No. The reported 80% margin describes one quarter’s operating conditions. The approximately 100 trillion won in 2026 shareholder returns is a specific plan that includes dividends, repurchases and cancellations, rather than a promise of the same amount every year.
