Verdict: The Simply Good Coffee The Brewer – Plastic-free is a premium eight-cup automatic drip machine that keeps plastic and aluminum out of the water-and-coffee path, rather than eliminating every plastic component. It uses 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass and small medical-grade silicone fittings, brews a 40-ounce pot in about six minutes, and targets 195–205°F. A single button, optional Bloom pre-infusion and dishwasher-safe removable parts make it unusually straightforward to use. The trade-off is its $399.99 sale price (listed against $479.99), glass carafe and hotplate design, and a still-unproven long-term reliability record.
This review separates the manufacturer’s brew-path claim from the machine’s complete construction, explains what the independent temperature testing does and does not show, and sets out when the price makes sense.

What is the Simply Good Coffee Brewer?
The Simply Good Coffee The Brewer – Plastic-free is an automatic pour-over-style drip brewer for up to eight five-ounce cups, or 40 ounces. Water passes through a 304 stainless-steel brew path into a borosilicate-glass carafe. The machine accepts ordinary #4 cone filters and has a one-button interface with optional automatic Bloom pre-infusion.
Its defining proposition is material choice. Simply Good Coffee says no plastic or aluminum touches water or coffee during brewing. That is a narrower and more accurate description than saying the entire appliance is plastic-free: Tom’s Guide identified silicone tubing and plastic exterior materials. The silicone pieces are described by the manufacturer as small, medical-grade flexible seals and fittings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The brewer is positioned as a simpler alternative to feature-heavy programmable machines. There is no complex menu to learn: fill the glass reservoir, add a #4 filter and grounds, optionally enable Bloom, and press the button. A hotplate keeps the glass carafe warm after brewing.
Simply Good Coffee says more than 40,000 homes use its products, a company-reported figure from 2026 rather than an independently audited installed-base count.

Only in the brew path. The claim means the surfaces that contact brewing water and extracted coffee are specified as stainless steel, borosilicate glass and limited silicone. It does not mean the housing, wiring insulation, tubing or every part visible on the outside contains no polymer.
What touches water and coffee
- Brew path: 304 stainless steel.
- Reservoir and carafe: borosilicate glass.
- Flexible seals and fittings: medical-grade silicone.
- Filter: a standard #4 paper cone.
What the slogan does not promise
Tom’s Guide reported silicone tubing and plastic exterior materials, and therefore called the machine not actually plastic-free in an absolute sense. Those findings do not contradict the company’s more specific statement that no plastic touches water or coffee. If you want to avoid all plastic in the appliance, this is not that product; if your concern is plastic contact with hot water and the finished drink, the brew-path construction addresses that concern more directly.

The 40-ounce rating uses the common coffee-maker convention of five-ounce cups, not eight full 8-ounce mugs. A household that pours 10- to 12-ounce travel mugs should expect fewer servings from one cycle.
How fast and how hot does it brew?
The manufacturer lists roughly six minutes for a full 40-ounce pot and a 195–205°F target. Consumer Reports observed the brewer staying close to the recommended 195°F-or-higher range for five or six minutes. That is useful evidence that the heating system reaches an appropriate extraction range, but it is not a guarantee that every cup, dose or electrical environment will produce identical temperatures.

A six-minute full-pot cycle is competitive for an eight-cup drip machine. The practical timing is longer once you include filling, grinding, filtering and a short settling period before pouring. The specification also describes maximum capacity, so a half-pot cycle may not take exactly half as long.
What the temperature result means for taste
Brewing around 195°F or above for the main extraction window gives coffee a sound technical foundation: the water is hot enough to dissolve desirable flavor compounds without relying on a prolonged, lukewarm cycle. Temperature alone cannot determine flavor. Grind size, dose, water quality, filter paper and coffee freshness still control whether a cup tastes thin, bitter or balanced.
Does it make good coffee?
It has the hardware needed for consistently good drip coffee, and the temperature observation is reassuring, but no independent blind-tasting score or product-specific owner-satisfaction study establishes a universal taste verdict. Expect the best results when you use a reasonably fresh coffee, a medium grind suited to a cone filter, an even bed of grounds and water with moderate mineral content.
Bloom pre-infusion
The optional Bloom phase wets the grounds before the main flow. That can help fresh coffee release trapped carbon dioxide and reduce dry pockets in the filter bed. It is particularly useful with recently roasted beans, although it adds a little time and does not rescue an incorrect grind or dose.
Glass carafe and hotplate behavior
The borosilicate-glass carafe lets you see the volume and the color of the coffee, while the hotplate maintains serving temperature after brewing. Glass-and-hotplate systems are convenient for a long breakfast but can gradually cook coffee if it sits for an extended period. Pouring into a preheated serving vessel is preferable when you plan to hold coffee for a while.
How do you brew a pot?
The control scheme is intentionally minimal. Use this sequence for a normal batch:

- Place the brewer on a level, heat-resistant surface with room above the 15-inch-tall body and enough clearance to remove the glass reservoir and carafe.
- Fill the borosilicate-glass reservoir with the amount of fresh water you need, staying within the marked capacity.
- Insert a standard #4 cone filter into the basket and add your ground coffee. Level the bed rather than packing it down.
- Seat the carafe and filter basket fully. A misaligned carafe can interrupt the outlet and create a mess on any drip machine.
- Choose the Bloom option if you want the pre-infusion stage, then press the single brew button.
- Wait for the approximately six-minute full-pot cycle to finish before removing the carafe. Stir the finished coffee gently if you want the first and last portions to have a more uniform strength.
- Move the carafe off the hotplate when you are finished serving, especially if the coffee will sit for more than a short breakfast period.
The machine does not require proprietary pods or a special paper format. Standard #4 cones are widely available, and the paper filter keeps fine sediment out of the carafe while making cleanup simpler than with a permanent metal mesh basket.
How easy is it to clean?
Removable parts are dishwasher-safe according to Simply Good Coffee, which is the brewer’s biggest ownership convenience. Let hot components cool, discard the used paper and grounds, then separate the removable basket, carafe and other user-serviceable pieces before washing.
After each brew
- Throw away the paper filter and grounds rather than rinsing grounds into a sink drain.
- Rinse the filter basket and carafe promptly so oils do not dry onto the glass.
- Wipe the hotplate only after it has cooled; do not immerse the powered base.
- Leave washed parts open to air-dry before reassembly.
Periodic descaling
Minerals from tap water eventually accumulate in any heated brewer, including one with a stainless-steel brew path. Run the manufacturer’s approved descaling or cleaning process at the interval recommended for your water hardness, then flush with fresh water before making coffee. The available data identifies descaler/cleaner, replacement lids and filter baskets as relevant maintenance parts, but it does not state a fixed descaling interval or a required chemical formula.
Do not assume that a dishwasher-safe carafe or basket means every component can go in a dishwasher. The official care instructions should take priority for seals, lids and any part containing silicone.
How does it compare with Moccamaster, OXO, Ratio, Breville and Bonavita brewers?
The Simply Good Coffee machine’s clearest advantage is its stated brew-path material policy combined with one-button simplicity. A fair head-to-head score is not possible from the available evidence because the manufacturer’s comparison chart is brand-authored and does not supply independent measurements for every competitor.
| Comparison area | Simply Good Coffee Brewer | What to verify on another model |
|---|---|---|
| Water and coffee-contact materials | 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass and medical-grade silicone; no plastic or aluminum in the stated brew path | Manufacturers may define “plastic-free” differently; inspect the complete water route |
| Temperature and extraction | 195–205°F target; Consumer Reports observed about 195°F or more for five or six minutes | Look for an independent measurement, not only a marketing target |
| Controls | One button with optional Bloom | Competing machines may add programmability, profiles or manual control |
| Capacity | Eight five-ounce cups / 40 ounces | Check whether the advertised “cups” use the same five-ounce convention |
| Carafe and warming | Glass carafe with hotplate | Thermal carafes avoid a warming plate but can be harder to inspect and replace |
| Cleaning | Removable dishwasher-safe parts; #4 paper cones | Confirm basket shape, dishwasher guidance and replacement-part supply |
| Reliability evidence | Consumer Reports says there is insufficient survey data for a brand-level predicted-reliability or owner-satisfaction score | Do not treat a long warranty as proof of a high failure-free rate |
| Price and warranty | $399.99 sale price listed against $479.99; five-year replacement warranty and 30-day satisfaction guarantee on the official page | Compare current regional pricing, warranty exclusions and parts policies |
Moccamaster, OXO, Ratio, Breville and Bonavita models can differ substantially in carafe design, controls and service arrangements. The right comparison is the specific model’s water path, measured brewing behavior, footprint and parts policy—not the brand name alone.

Is the $400–$480 price worth it?
At $399.99 on the official first-generation product page, the brewer costs considerably more than ordinary plastic-heavy drip machines. The same page lists $479.99 as the non-sale price, while Tom’s Guide reported a $479 price on Amazon U.S. Retail pricing, inventory and marketplace warranty wording can change, so treat those figures as dated reference points rather than a permanent price promise.
Reasons the premium may make sense
- You specifically want to minimize plastic and aluminum contact with hot water and coffee.
- You value a simple physical control instead of a display, app or multi-step menu.
- A five-year replacement warranty and 30-day satisfaction window reduce the risk of an expensive first purchase.
- You prefer standard #4 filters and dishwasher-safe removable parts over proprietary consumables.
- You brew a full 40-ounce batch often enough to benefit from the approximately six-minute cycle.
Reasons to choose a less expensive machine
- Your priority is the lowest cost per cup rather than brew-path materials.
- You want a thermal carafe, extensive scheduling or a much larger batch size.
- You dislike hotplates or do not want to handle a glass carafe.
- You expect a long, independently documented reliability history; this brand does not yet have enough Consumer Reports survey data for a product-family reliability score.
The price is easiest to justify as a materials-and-simplicity purchase, not as a promise of dramatically better flavor than every cheaper brewer. Good coffee depends heavily on preparation, and the available independent evidence confirms temperature performance rather than proving superiority in taste.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What warranty and support do you get?
The official product page lists a five-year replacement warranty and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. “Replacement warranty” should not automatically be read as five years of unlimited repair, free consumables or accidental-damage coverage; check the current terms for eligibility, shipping responsibility, proof of purchase and exclusions before ordering.
Replacement glass carafes, lids, filter baskets and cleaning products are identified as follow-on parts for ownership planning. Confirm that the exact part is in stock and compatible with your generation before discarding a damaged component. Marketplace listings can carry different seller policies from the manufacturer’s direct offer.
What is the programmable version?
Simply Good Coffee also lists a programmable variant in the same eight-cup/40-ounce class. It adds a 24-hour timer and 72-hour outage memory, and it is rated at 1,200 watts rather than the 1,540 watts specified for the one-button brewer.
| Feature | The Brewer – Plastic-free | Programmable variant |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity class | Eight cups / 40 ounces | Eight cups / 40 ounces |
| Controls | One-button operation with optional Bloom | Programmable controls with 24-hour timer |
| Power rating | 1,540 watts | 1,200 watts |
| Outage memory | Not stated | 72 hours |
Do not assume that specifications, dimensions, warranty wording or brew-path materials are identical between generations. Verify the exact product page when choosing between the manual one-button model and the timer-equipped version.

Who should buy the Simply Good Coffee Brewer?
Buy it if your main goal is a straightforward drip brewer whose stated hot-water path avoids plastic and aluminum, and you are comfortable paying a premium for that construction. It is also a sensible fit for households that make one medium batch, prefer standard paper filters and want dishwasher-friendly cleanup.
Skip it if you need a thermal carafe, larger-than-40-ounce output, extensive scheduling on the base model or a long independent reliability record. The glass-and-hotplate arrangement and the distinction between a plastic-free brew path and a plastic-free appliance are central to the decision.
What are the main advantages and drawbacks?
Advantages
- Stated 304 stainless-steel and borosilicate-glass water-and-coffee path.
- 195–205°F target with Consumer Reports observation near 195°F or higher during the main brew window.
- Approximately six-minute full-pot cycle.
- Optional Bloom without a complicated interface.
- Standard #4 filters and removable dishwasher-safe parts.
- Five-year replacement warranty and 30-day satisfaction guarantee listed by the manufacturer.
Drawbacks
- The appliance is not entirely plastic-free; silicone tubing and plastic exterior materials remain.
- Glass carafe and hotplate can be less convenient than a thermal system for long holding times.
- $399.99 sale pricing, with $479.99 listed as the regular price, is high for an eight-cup drip brewer.
- No product-specific Consumer Reports reliability or owner-satisfaction score is available because the brand lacks sufficient survey data.
- Independent taste and durability evidence is limited compared with established mass-market brands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ordinary supermarket coffee filters with this brewer?
Yes. The machine is specified for standard #4 cone filters, so you do not need a proprietary pod or paper format. Filter quality still affects flow and flavor, so choose cones that fit the basket cleanly without collapsing.
What does the 72-hour outage memory do on the programmable model?
It preserves the programmed schedule after a brief power interruption for up to 72 hours, according to the programmable product specification. That feature belongs to the timer-equipped variant, not necessarily to the one-button model.
Is a five-year replacement warranty transferable if I buy from a marketplace seller?
The available product information does not establish transferability or whether every seller honors the manufacturer’s terms. Keep the receipt and verify the warranty’s seller, region, registration and shipping conditions before purchase.
How should I store the brewer between uses?
Empty remaining water, remove used grounds and let the removable parts dry fully before closing the machine up. Leaving the reservoir, basket or lid damp can create stale odors even when the parts are dishwasher-safe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the 40-ounce rating fill eight normal mugs?
No. The advertised cup is the coffee-maker convention of five ounces. Large 10- to 12-ounce mugs will reduce the number of servings from one full cycle.
