Sim racing is no longer a small specialist hobby in the way it was a decade ago. The clearest recent evidence is Sim Racing Expo 2026 in Frankfurt, which attracted 29,580 attendees across three days, according to South West Vision’s 21 October 2026 post-event release. That record follows 24,371 visitors in 2025 and 13,600 in 2024, while the event has expanded from a 2014 show with 12 exhibitors and 1,000 visitors into a large public festival and trade exhibition.
Attendance alone does not prove a global market size, but Frankfurt’s scale, product range, motorsport involvement, creator audience and Charlotte counterpart make “sim racing is still niche” an increasingly outdated description.

It remains a specialist activity compared with mainstream console gaming, but the audience and ecosystem around it are now large enough to support major international events. Sim Racing Expo’s own reported figures show rapid growth rather than a flat enthusiast gathering.
| Year | Visitors or attendees | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 1,000 | Launch event with 12 exhibitors, according to South West Vision |
| 2024 | 13,600 | Organizer-reported attendance |
| 2025 | 24,371 | Organizer-reported attendance; a 76% increase from 2024 |
| 2026 | 29,580 | Frankfurt attendance over three days, reported after the event |
The numbers are organizer or event-company figures, not an independently audited global census. They nevertheless show that sim racing has moved beyond a tiny hardware niche into a sizeable event, retail and media category.

What happened at Sim Racing Expo 2026 in Frankfurt?
The European expo moved from Messe Dortmund to Messe Frankfurt Hall 12 and ran from 16 to 18 October 2026. The pre-event plan described more than 14,000 square metres, about 70 exhibitors, six shops and over 20 hours of stage programming. The post-event release confirmed the 14,000-square-metre footprint and the 29,580 attendance figure.
Frankfurt combined a trade-show floor with a consumer festival. Visitors could speak directly with manufacturers, watch product presentations, shop on site and try equipment rather than judging it only from photographs or specifications.
Which products could visitors try?
- Steering wheels and wheelbases, from entry-level desk equipment to professional direct-drive systems.
- Pedals, including load-cell and other higher-fidelity designs.
- Complete simulator rigs and cockpits.
- Virtual-reality headsets and other display setups.
- Full-motion platforms and haptic seats.
The range matters because it puts the whole upgrade path in one place. A beginner can understand what a basic wheel-and-pedal setup adds, while an experienced driver can compare stronger force feedback, rigid mounting, motion and tactile feedback.
What else was on the show floor?
The expo also displayed real race cars and hypercars, hosted professional racers and content creators, and connected hardware manufacturers with software developers and esports organizations. The official preview listed Assetto Corsa EVO Free Roam as playable before release, with a presentation by KUNOS co-founder Marco Massarutto.

After the event, the organizer said more than 35,000 YouTube viewers watched reveals from Assetto Corsa, ImSim, Fanatec, Simucube and other exhibitors. That online audience shows that the expo’s reach extended beyond people who could travel to Frankfurt.
Why does the Frankfurt show suggest mainstream growth?
Several changes are happening at once, and their combination is more significant than any single attendance record.

Sim racing is no longer just a game and a steering wheel. The expo presented a ladder of products: affordable controls, premium wheelbases, pedal technologies, cockpits, virtual reality, motion and haptics. That breadth supports different budgets and levels of commitment, giving newcomers a route in without requiring a professional simulator immediately.
Motorsport and gaming overlap in public
Real racing teams, cars, professional drivers, FIA-linked esports activity, software studios and creators appeared in the same event. This overlap helps sim racing function as both a motorsport training and competition environment and an entertainment product.

The format travels internationally
The Charlotte edition drew 8,930 visitors in 2026. That is smaller than Frankfurt’s turnout, but it demonstrates that the expo model is not confined to Germany. A European flagship plus a North American counterpart gives manufacturers, teams and creators a broader platform.
Creators make specialist hardware legible
Stage programming, livestreams and reveal videos translate technical products into demonstrations that a general gaming audience can understand. The reported 35,000-plus YouTube viewers for 2026 reveals are additional evidence that interest is not limited to people already active in sim-racing forums.

The expo’s categories map to the decisions that determine whether a setup feels practical or excessive. Compare the control hardware first, then decide how much immersion and physical infrastructure your space can support.
| Decision | Entry-level approach | Higher-end approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel control | Lower-power wheel mounted to a desk | Stronger direct-drive wheelbase on a rigid mount | More force detail generally requires more money, space and a sturdier structure |
| Pedals | Standard spring-based pedals | Load-cell or other pressure-sensitive pedals | More consistent braking can improve control, but the pedal set needs a firm base |
| Mounting | Desk clamp or foldable stand | Dedicated cockpit or simulator rig | A cockpit is more stable but occupies permanent floor area |
| Visual immersion | Existing monitor | VR headset or expanded display setup | VR adds depth and presence; it also introduces headset comfort and PC-compatibility considerations |
| Motion and feedback | No motion hardware | Motion platform or haptic seat | These add physical cues, cost, installation complexity and space requirements |
Compatibility should be checked before purchase. Confirm that the wheelbase, pedals and accessories work with the intended PC or console, that the software supports the platform, and that the mounting pattern fits the desk, stand or cockpit. A staged upgrade is usually easier to manage than buying every category at once.

Do you need a cockpit, motion platform or VR to start?
No. A wheel and pedals on a stable desk can provide the essential control experience, and a cockpit is useful only when desk movement, pedal stability or seating position becomes a limitation. Motion platforms and haptic seats are optional immersion upgrades, not prerequisites for learning racecraft.
VR is similarly a preference rather than a requirement. It can provide strong depth perception and a natural sense of looking into corners, while a conventional monitor is simpler to share, configure and use for longer sessions. The right choice depends on software support, computer capability, comfort and available space.
What does the Expo prove—and what does it not prove?
The 2026 Frankfurt result proves that a major sim-racing event can attract tens of thousands of people and support a broad commercial and media ecosystem. It does not, by itself, establish a worldwide player count, average household spending or the profitability of every hardware category.
The organizer has cited a projected sim-racing market volume of up to €1.3 billion by 2030. That is a projection attributed to South West Vision, not an independently validated market measurement, so it should be treated as an outlook rather than a settled fact.

What should readers watch for next?
Future expo announcements should be checked for confirmed dates, venue, exhibitor count and whether figures are promotional estimates or post-event results. Attendance and online-viewer totals are most useful when the reporting period and source are stated alongside them.

Is Sim Racing Expo held every year?
The Frankfurt event has developed into a recurring annual gathering, but dates, halls and exhibitor plans can change. Check the official announcement for the specific edition before arranging travel.
Can beginners attend Sim Racing Expo, or is it for professionals?
Beginners are part of the intended audience because the floor includes entry-level controls, shops and public demonstrations. Professional racers, developers and esports participants attend alongside first-time visitors rather than replacing them.
Is a gaming PC required for sim racing?
The hardware category does not determine one universal platform. Before buying, verify the console or PC compatibility of the wheelbase, pedals and simulator software you plan to use.
How long should I spend at the expo?
A full day can cover the main hardware areas, but visitors interested in stage sessions, creator appearances and repeated equipment demonstrations may need more time. The 2026 program advertised more than 20 hours of stage content across three days.
