SideQuest is a web app that uses AI to give you a tiny outdoor mission, then deliberately gets out of the way. You choose the time available, your mood, and the kind of place you are in. Gemma generates two or three things to notice, including exactly one photo task, and the app tells you to put your phone away. It needs no account, map, or GPS. The useful idea is not AI that keeps you chatting; it is AI that answers “what do I do when I get outside?” quickly enough for the world to become the interface.
What is SideQuest, and why is it different from a typical AI assistant?
SideQuest is a short-session outdoor activity generator. Instead of asking an assistant for an endless stream of recommendations, you provide three constraints—how much time you have, how you feel, and what sort of environment you are in—and receive a compact mission you can remember away from the screen.

The remaining tasks can be completed through your own observation: noticing nature, finding a pattern or color, comparing two things, listening, walking for a set duration, or reflecting. That limit is intentional. SideQuest is designed to end the AI interaction quickly so the activity happens outdoors rather than in the app.
The product principle is “The world is the interface.” There is no map to follow, GPS track to watch, or social feed to keep you engaged. The app supplies a prompt, validates it, and steps aside.

How does the five-screen SideQuest flow work?
The documented experience moves through five screens. A recoverable active session is saved locally so an interrupted quest can be reopened in the same browser.
- Landing: Start a new quest and enter the short setup flow.
- Quest Setup: Select the time you have, your mood, and the environment or place type.
- Quest: Read the two or three generated tasks. One task asks for a photograph; the others are meant to be remembered while you look, listen, walk, compare, or reflect.
- Evidence: Submit the single photo requested by the mission. The app can check that image against one mission criterion; discoveries that do not have a photo are self-reported.
- Completion: Finish the session and see its reflection, including the Away Ratio estimate.
No account is required for this flow. The described implementation also does not depend on a map or GPS, so it can frame an activity in a yard, neighborhood, park, or other setting without tracking a route.

What kinds of tasks can a generated mission contain?
SideQuest uses a fixed set of approved task primitives rather than allowing the model to invent arbitrary activities. That makes missions easier to validate and keeps them small enough to execute without repeatedly consulting a phone.
- Photographing an object
- Finding something in nature
- Observing a pattern
- Observing a color
- Comparing two things
- Listening
- Walking for a duration
- Reflecting
A mission might therefore ask you to photograph a texture, find a natural object, listen for a distant sound, compare two shades, walk for a stated period, and note one change in your attention. The exact wording is generated from your setup choices, but the allowed building blocks are constrained by the application.
How are quests generated and screened for safety?
AI proposes a mission; deterministic application code decides whether SideQuest accepts it. The documented pipeline is:

- Preferences: Your time, mood, and environment choices are collected.
- Gemma generation: The default quest adapter calls Gemma 4 26B (
gemma-4-26b-a4b-it) through Google’s Interactions API. - Structured extraction: The raw model response is extracted as JSON.
- Schema and primitive checks: Zod validates the structure, and every task must use an approved primitive.
- Input compatibility: The generated tasks are checked against the preferences you supplied.
- Deterministic safety validation: Rules reject specified hazards before a quest reaches you.
- Approval or fallback: A rejected or failed generation can be retried or replaced with a curated fallback mission.
Safety rules explicitly block prompts involving trespassing, rail tracks, unsafe traffic, construction zones, unsafe heights, entering water, handling wildlife, consuming unknown plants or fungi, and dangerous night exploration. These rules are a tested filter, not complete understanding of every sentence or physical surrounding. You remain responsible for skipping anything that looks unsafe, even if it passed the app’s checks.

How does SideQuest verify the required photo?
The photo verifier defaults to Gemini 3.7 Flash. Uploads are restricted to JPEG, PNG, or WebP files no larger than 5 MB. The server checks both the declared MIME type and the file’s byte signature, so renaming an unsupported file does not make it valid.
A verification result counts only when the model returns verified: true and confidence of at least 0.75. An uncertain result does not automatically trigger another attempt; a technical failure retries once. This distinction prevents a low-confidence visual guess from being treated as proof while still allowing a transient request error to recover.
Only one mission criterion can be checked against the image. SideQuest cannot use that photo to establish every other thing you noticed, walked past, or heard. Those parts of the quest remain self-reported.
What happens to uploaded images and other session data?
The app does not persist uploaded evidence images. They are sent to Google for verification with store: false, and both model requests disable Interaction storage. That describes the application’s request settings, not a guarantee of zero retention under every provider policy, so the privacy boundary should be understood accordingly.

Setup preferences and one active, recoverable session are stored in the browser’s localStorage. This allows refresh recovery without creating an account, but it is browser-local data rather than a cloud history. Clearing site storage or changing browsers can remove that recovery state.
What is the Away Ratio, and what does it actually measure?
The Away Ratio is a browser-visibility estimate: it approximates how long the SideQuest page was not visible during the session. It is not a pedometer, outdoor-activity detector, or device-wide screen-time report.
The documented calculation is:
estimatedAwayMs = max(0, totalDurationMs - clampedActiveScreenMs)awayRatio = estimatedAwayMs / totalDurationMs
In practical terms, the app subtracts the time it believes its page was actively visible from the total session duration. A hidden tab may mean you opened another app, switched to a different browser tab, or simply stopped looking at the device; it does not prove that you were walking outside. The ratio is a reflection on the session, not proof of outdoor activity.

What technology runs SideQuest?
The implementation is one Next.js project using strict TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Zod, and React state for the screen flow. Render hosts the user interface and two server API routes, while Google hosts inference. Browser storage handles setup preferences and the single active-session recovery record.
This architecture keeps model credentials and validation on the server routes rather than exposing the entire inference exchange to the browser. It also means the generation and photo-checking paths depend on hosted services instead of a model running locally on the device.
What do the tests prove—and what do they not prove?
Ankit Singh, the SideQuest author, reports that checks dated October 11 passed 119 tests, linting, strict typechecking, and a production build. The tests cover generation approval and fallback, upload validation, verification classification, visibility mathematics, and recovery behavior.
Those results establish that the documented application rules behave as intended in automated checks. They do not establish that people spend less time on phones, that missions are memorable once the device is put away, or that real-world discovery photos reliably match their criteria. The author reports no completed outdoor field study, so effectiveness outside the browser remains unproven.
What should you check before relying on SideQuest?
- Connectivity: Quest generation and image verification use hosted Google inference, so the relevant requests need a working connection.
- Safety: Read every task in its physical context. A rule-based filter cannot see a sudden vehicle, unstable surface, private boundary, weather change, or other hazard around you.
- Privacy: Do not photograph people, private information, or sensitive locations merely to satisfy a prompt. The app’s non-persistence setting is not the same as a universal provider-retention guarantee.
- Evidence expectations: One photo can support one criterion only. A successful check is not authentication of the whole outing.
- Measurement: Use Away Ratio as a self-reflection signal, especially after a refresh or interruption, rather than a health or productivity metric.
How does SideQuest compare with other outdoor AI concepts?
The most useful comparison is not a feature-count contest. It is whether another product makes different choices about attention, evidence, privacy, and safety.

Does SideQuest require special gear, or is there a physical product?
SideQuest is a digital web app. The described flow does not require a named accessory, replacement part, tool, consumable, book, physical media item, collectible, toy, or model kit. You need a compatible browser and, for the photo task, a camera capable of producing an accepted JPEG, PNG, or WebP file within the 5 MB limit.
Potential future partnerships could make sense with parks departments, outdoor-recreation nonprofits, or nature-engagement organizations. No current program or sponsorship is identified, so any referral or partnership claim would need separate confirmation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs SideQuest worth trying?
It is worth trying if your problem is starting an outdoor activity, not finding a comprehensive route planner. Its strongest design decision is deliberate brevity: the model creates a small, safety-screened prompt and then stops competing for your attention. Its limits are equally clear: hosted inference requires connectivity, one image proves only one criterion, the Away Ratio is an imperfect browser signal, and no field study yet shows that the concept changes behavior.
Approach it as a lightweight prompt generator rather than an authority on safety, exercise, navigation, or screen-time reduction. That framing matches what the software currently demonstrates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SideQuest run when there is no internet connection?
The documented implementation sends quest-generation and photo-verification requests to hosted Google services, so those operations require connectivity. A previously loaded page may still display local state, but there is no documented offline model or offline verification path.
Can I use the Away Ratio to prove I went for a walk?
No. A browser tab becoming hidden only shows that SideQuest was not visible; it cannot distinguish a walk from another app, another tab, or an interruption. Treat the value as a personal reflection, not evidence for a fitness log or study.
What should a school, park, or nonprofit verify before partnering with SideQuest?
Verify the organization’s intended audience, privacy requirements, accessibility expectations, and any sponsorship terms directly with the app’s operators. The available description suggests those organizations as a possible future category, but it does not identify an existing program or agreement.
What happens if a generated mission still feels unsafe?
Do not attempt it. The safety filter covers named hazard classes, but it cannot fully understand changing weather, traffic, terrain, wildlife, or private property; your judgment takes priority over an approved quest.
