Use static paths for a small, deliberate set of filter pages that target distinct searches; use query parameters for high-cardinality combinations, sorting, pagination, and temporary interface states. The choice is not a matter of which syntax Google prefers. It depends on whether a URL represents a stable page you want discovered and indexed, or one of many possible views that would create unnecessary crawl and maintenance work. A sound design controls URL cardinality, keeps one canonical representation for each state, and gives Google ordinary links to the pages that matter.
Should ecommerce filters use URL parameters or static paths?
Both structures are valid. A path such as /shoes/running is usually the better choice for a finite landing page with its own search intent, copy, and merchandising. A query string such as ?color=green&size=10 is better for a combination that shoppers may change freely but that you do not want to turn into a separate search result.

Google’s ecommerce guidance says well-designed URLs help it locate and retrieve pages efficiently. It supports both path segments and query parameters for product and category states; the important distinction is whether each URL is intentional, stable, and uniquely useful.
What makes a filtered URL worth indexing?
Index a filter page when it answers a recognizable query and can stand on its own as a useful category page. Keep it out of the index when it is merely one moment in a shopper’s session or one of a huge number of nearly identical combinations.

Use a static path for durable search intent
A page such as /shoes/running can have a descriptive title, explanatory text, internal links, and a curated product set. If the combination is part of your information architecture and you can maintain it as a real landing page, a path makes that intent visible to users and crawlers.
Use a parameter for combinatorial state
A request such as /shoes?color=green&size=10&sort=price-asc can represent a useful interface state without deserving an independent search listing. Color, size, price ranges, stock toggles, sorting choices, and similar facets multiply quickly; exposing every combination creates a URL space far larger than the set of pages you can write, link, and maintain.

List every independent facet and the values it can take, then consider how shoppers can combine them. Even a modest number of dimensions can produce thousands of URLs. Google describes this faceted-navigation pattern as a common cause of overcrawling and slower discovery of important content. There is no universal safe number of URLs; the practical limit depends on how many combinations have real demand and how much crawl and server capacity the site can devote to them.
How should static-path filters be designed?
Path-based filters work when the application treats the path as a controlled set of routes rather than a free-form encoding of every click.
- Reserve routes for approved combinations. Maintain an allowlist of category and facet combinations that have distinct intent and useful standalone content. Do not automatically create a new indexable route for every possible selection.
- Fix one facet order. Decide whether the route is, for example, category, activity, then audience, and enforce that order everywhere. The same combination must never produce multiple paths with facets rearranged.
- Normalize values. Use one case, one spelling, and consistent encoding for each value. Convert equivalent forms to the single approved route rather than serving duplicate content.
- Reject duplicates and impossible states. A route that repeats a facet, combines mutually exclusive values, or names a value that does not exist should not resolve to a generic category page.
- Publish one canonical URL. For an indexable path, use a self-referencing canonical and use that exact address in internal links and XML sitemaps.
For example, if the approved route is /shoes/running/womens, do not also serve the same products at /shoes/womens/running or at a route containing the same facet twice. Deterministic routing prevents accidental duplication and makes future changes safer.

How should query-parameter filters be implemented?
Parameter URLs should be predictable, persistent, and limited to parameters that actually change the page. Use ordinary syntax such as ?color=green&size=10, encode reserved characters correctly, and make equivalent requests resolve consistently.
Define an allowlist
Document which keys are meaningful, such as color, size, or page. Ignore or remove session identifiers, tracking codes, current-time values, and user-relative values from crawlable internal links. Those values create URLs that do not represent durable content.
Normalize ordering and repetition
Choose a stable order for keys and values. A request with color=green&size=10 should not produce a different URL, cache entry, or canonical signal from size=10&color=green. Avoid repeated keys unless the application has a documented, deterministic meaning for them; otherwise reject or normalize them.
Separate display state from index targets
Sorting and many narrow combinations can remain functional for shoppers while being excluded from the search index. Decide explicitly whether filtered URLs are crawlable and indexable instead of allowing the default behavior of the framework or JavaScript router to decide for you.
Keep links consistent
Internal links, canonicals, feeds, and sitemaps should use the same normalized representation. If one component emits a parameter in a different order or with a different spelling, Google may discover several URLs for one page and spend resources fetching duplicates.

Should filtered category pages be indexable?
Index only the subset that has a clear search purpose and content quality; exclude the rest through a deliberate crawl and indexing policy. A canonical tag is useful for consolidation, but it is not a substitute for deciding whether Google should fetch a large family of URLs.
When pages should be indexable
Give an approved landing page a stable URL, unique title and copy, useful products, internal links, and a self-referencing canonical. Keep it in the sitemap only if it is a page you want discovered and maintained as part of the site’s search architecture.
When pages should not be indexable
For transient or combinatorial states, use an exclusion strategy appropriate to the application. Google’s faceted-navigation guidance discusses robots.txt controls and other deliberate patterns for preventing unnecessary crawling. A noindex directive can control indexing after a page is fetched, but relying on it alone still allows the initial crawl; where crawl reduction is the goal, prevent discovery or crawling where appropriate.
Do not create contradictory signals
Do not place one URL in a sitemap, link to it prominently, and simultaneously tell crawlers not to fetch it. Decide which URLs are search targets and make links, canonicals, sitemap entries, and crawl rules agree.

Do URL parameters waste crawl budget?
They can when each facet click creates a crawlable URL and the number of combinations grows faster than the number of useful pages. Google may repeatedly fetch equivalent or low-value variants, consuming server resources and delaying discovery of newer or more important content.

The risk is not the presence of a question mark by itself. A small, normalized set of meaningful parameters can be efficient. The problem is uncontrolled cardinality: duplicate parameters, alternate ordering, session values, empty combinations, and links to every possible facet state. Measure the number of URLs your navigation can generate and identify which families return substantially the same content before opening them to crawlers.

Every paginated result needs its own stable, crawlable URL, and pages must be connected with ordinary anchor links. Google says crawlers generally discover URLs in <a href> links; they do not reliably click buttons or trigger user-action JavaScript.
- Give each page a unique address, such as
?page=2or a documented path equivalent. - Link sequential pages with real
<a href>elements so a crawler can follow them without submitting a form or executing a click handler. - Do not encode page numbers only in URL fragments such as
#page=2; fragments are not a dependable discovery mechanism for separate result pages. - Keep pagination parameters stable and prevent duplicate representations of the same page.
Infinite scroll can remain a user-interface feature, but it should have a crawlable paginated equivalent. A button that loads more products without changing the URL leaves crawlers with no dependable path to later results.

Return HTTP 404 when a filter or pagination combination does not represent a real result page. That includes impossible facet pairs, duplicate filters that your application does not support, nonexistent values, and page numbers beyond the available result set.
Redirecting every invalid request to a broad category page can make unrelated URLs look valid and can hide application errors. A 404 clearly tells crawlers that the requested resource does not exist, while valid zero-result pages can be handled according to the site’s product and merchandising policy if they represent a deliberate, meaningful state.
Can a store use both paths and parameters?
Yes. A hybrid model is often the most practical: promote a small set of high-value combinations to static paths and leave the remaining facets, sorting, and pagination as parameters.
For example, /shoes/running can be the indexable landing page, while /shoes/running?color=green&size=10&sort=price-asc remains a shopper-facing refinement. The application must still normalize the parameter order, preserve the approved path, and apply the chosen crawl and indexing policy to the refined states.

If a combination is promoted from a parameter URL to a path, update internal links, canonicals, and sitemap entries together and ensure the old representation no longer creates a duplicate page.
What is a practical launch checklist?
- Classify each facet as a landing-page candidate, a transient control, or pagination/sorting state.
- Estimate the URL combinations generated by the navigation, including alternate orderings and repeated keys.
- Choose one representation for every approved page and enforce it at routing level.
- Normalize case, encoding, value spelling, and parameter order.
- Reject duplicate, impossible, and nonexistent combinations with HTTP 404.
- Use descriptive paths for stable pages and standard query syntax for variable states.
- Set canonicals, internal links, and sitemaps to the same normalized URLs.
- Choose crawl controls for non-indexable facets; do not assume canonical or nofollow alone will eliminate crawling.
- Provide ordinary anchor links and unique URLs for every paginated result.
- Review server logs and crawl reports after launch for duplicate families, unexpected parameters, and excessive requests.
The governing rule is simple: make a URL a path when it is a page your business is prepared to explain, link, and maintain; make it a parameterized state when it is one of many combinations that helps a shopper but should not expand the search index.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can canonical tags by themselves stop Google from crawling faceted URLs?
No. Canonicals help indicate which duplicate representation should be consolidated after discovery, but they do not prevent the initial fetch of every variant. If reducing crawl activity is the objective, pair canonical decisions with an explicit crawl-control strategy and avoid linking unnecessary variants.
How should a team decide which new filters deserve their own landing page?
Require evidence of distinct search intent, a stable product set, and content that can be maintained independently. If a proposed page would differ only by a temporary sort choice or by combining many existing facets, keep it as a parameterized state instead of adding another index target.

Keep the previous representation from serving a second copy of the page, and verify that invalid legacy combinations still return an appropriate error.
Are query strings inherently bad for ecommerce SEO?
No. Google supports query parameters when they are readable, stable, and used for an intentional purpose. Their SEO risk comes from uncontrolled combinations, duplicate representations, and crawl policies that expose far more states than the site wants indexed.
