For most Apple users, iCloud+ is worth paying for only when the free 5GB no longer covers backups and photos, or when you will use its privacy and family features. The $0.99-per-month 50GB plan is the sensible first upgrade. A 200GB plan usually fits a household with several Apple devices, while 2TB or more is aimed at large photo and video libraries. If your iCloud use stays below 5GB, or your household already pays for Google One or Microsoft 365 storage, keep the free tier until a measured need appears.
How much does iCloud+ cost?
Apple’s U.S. monthly iCloud+ prices range from $0.99 for 50GB to $59.99 for 12TB. Apple publishes different currencies, taxes and prices by region, so use the price shown in your Apple account before deciding.

What do you get beyond extra gigabytes?
iCloud+ adds features that can change the value calculation if you will actually use them. Apple lists Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video with iCloud+.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Privacy and email tools
Private Relay and Hide My Email are most valuable to people who want additional privacy while browsing or who frequently create unique email addresses for sign-ups. Custom Email Domain matters mainly if you operate email on a domain you own. Paying for a feature you never turn on should not influence your plan choice.
Home security and invitations
HomeKit Secure Video can add value for a household already using compatible HomeKit cameras. Apple Invites is useful if your events and guest lists are managed in Apple’s ecosystem. The practical question is not whether these features exist, but whether replacing separate services or workflows would save you money or effort.
Family sharing
An iCloud+ plan can be shared with up to five other family members. The storage allowance is a shared pool, so a 200GB plan is not 200GB for every person. Family members retain their own Apple accounts and personal content, while the available capacity is drawn from the same subscription.
Do you need iCloud+ for an iPhone backup?
No. Every Apple account starts with 5GB of iCloud storage, and that free allowance can hold a small backup. You need a paid plan when the combined space required by backups, photos or other iCloud data exceeds the free limit and you cannot reduce it.
Apple describes the service this way: “iCloud keeps your information safe, automatically backed up, and available anywhere you go — with 5 GB of storage for free.” The free tier therefore provides the basic iCloud workflow; payment primarily removes the capacity ceiling and adds iCloud+ features.

Check your actual use first
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap [your name].
- Choose iCloud to see the storage bar and category breakdown.
- Identify whether photos, device backups or another category is using most of the allowance.
- Delete data you no longer need or reduce unnecessary backups before buying capacity.
If your measured use is below 5GB after cleanup, staying free is rational. If an essential backup or photo library alone pushes you over the limit, the 50GB plan is usually the least expensive way to keep the same Apple workflow.
Is 50GB enough for iCloud?
50GB is enough for one light-to-moderate Apple user when the plan is monitored. It is not a guaranteed lifetime allowance: new photos, videos, app data and additional device backups gradually consume the pool.
Choose 50GB when
- You have one primary iPhone or iPad and no large shared library.
- Your current iCloud use is just above 5GB rather than tens of gigabytes.
- You want an inexpensive buffer for automatic backups instead of repeatedly deleting data.
- You are willing to review the storage bar every few months.
Move to 200GB when
- Several people or devices need the same family pool.
- Photos and videos are a major part of your routine.
- You have already filled 50GB or expect to do so within the next year.
- The household wants iCloud+ features as well as capacity.
At $2.99 per month in the U.S., 200GB is often the practical household tier because it leaves room for growth without jumping to the $9.99 2TB price. It is still a shared ceiling, so check the combined usage rather than multiplying 200GB by the number of family members.
When is 2TB or more justified?
A 2TB plan makes sense when your measured library is large or several users create high-volume media. Creators who retain original video, households with years of photos and people backing up multiple Apple devices should estimate future growth before choosing it.
The 6TB and 12TB tiers cost $29.99 and $59.99 per month in the U.S. They are not automatic upgrades for ordinary families; choose them only after the iCloud settings screen shows that a smaller plan will be consumed quickly. If your need is temporary, review whether old video can be archived elsewhere instead of committing to a permanently larger recurring bill.

Is paying for iCloud+ unnecessary if you already use Google or Microsoft storage?
It can be unnecessary when another subscription already covers your household’s photos and files and you are comfortable with a different backup workflow. The best comparison is not headline gigabytes alone; it is the service that matches where your devices, photos, files and email already live.
| Service | Included or entry storage cited | Sharing and ecosystem notes |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | 5GB free; iCloud+ 50GB for $0.99/month in the U.S. | Designed around Apple device backups, photos and Apple account services; iCloud+ supports sharing with up to five other family members. |
| Up to 15GB free per account; Google One Basic 100GB for $1.99/month | Google One Basic supports sharing with up to five others. | |
| Microsoft | 5GB free; larger OneDrive allocations are bundled with Microsoft 365 | Potentially valuable when your household already pays for Microsoft 365, but the cited material does not establish a single comparable price or capacity for every bundle. |
When Google One may be the better value
Google’s free allowance is up to 15GB, three times Apple’s free 5GB. Google One Basic provides 100GB for $1.99 per month and can be shared with up to five others. If your household already stores its photos and files in Google services, paying for Google One may avoid maintaining two subscriptions.
When Microsoft 365 may change the calculation
Microsoft documents 5GB of free storage and larger OneDrive allocations bundled with Microsoft 365. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 for work or school software, its included OneDrive capacity may cover your storage need without a separate iCloud+ purchase. You still need to decide whether Apple’s own backup and photo workflow is important enough to keep iCloud+ alongside it.
How should you decide whether iCloud+ is worth it?
Use a measured, household-level decision rather than buying the largest plan immediately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record current usage. In Settings > [your name] > iCloud, note the total and the categories consuming it.
- Clean up first. Remove obsolete backups, large files or unwanted media only when you are certain you no longer need them.
- Test the free tier. If you can remain below 5GB without compromising backups or photos, stay free.
- Buy 50GB for a modest overage. The $0.99 U.S. plan is the low-risk first step when one user needs more room.
- Use 200GB for a shared household. Choose it when multiple devices or family members draw from one pool.
- Estimate growth for large libraries. Select 2TB or above only when current usage and expected additions justify the recurring price.
- Value features honestly. Count Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video only if you will use them.
- Compare existing subscriptions. Check whether Google One or Microsoft 365 already provides enough capacity and whether moving files would create inconvenience.
What are the most common iCloud+ mistakes?
Buying before checking the storage breakdown
A bigger plan can hide avoidable clutter. Checking the category chart first may reveal an old device backup or a large set of files that you no longer need.

Treating family sharing as separate quotas
Up to five other family members can share an iCloud+ plan, but everyone draws from the plan’s single capacity. A household should add its current usage and leave a margin for new photos and backups.
Comparing unlike plans
Google’s 100GB entry plan, Apple’s 50GB plan and Microsoft 365 bundles differ in capacity, features and ecosystem. Compare the total monthly cost in your country, the storage you will actually use and the work involved in moving data.
Ignoring regional pricing
U.S. prices are useful benchmarks, not universal quotes. Apple publishes prices in local currencies and may apply different taxes, so confirm the amount displayed during purchase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is iCloud+ cheaper than Google One?
There is no universal winner. In the U.S., iCloud+ starts at $0.99 per month for 50GB, while Google One Basic is $1.99 per month for 100GB; Google also offers up to 15GB free compared with Apple’s 5GB. Apple can still be the better value for an iPhone household that needs integrated backups, Apple photo storage, family sharing and iCloud+ features, while Google can be cheaper when its larger free allowance or existing services already cover the need.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Make the comparison using your real usage and your current subscriptions. A lower price per gigabyte is not a saving if you must duplicate storage, change photo workflows or give up a backup process you rely on.
What is the practical verdict?
Pay for iCloud+ when the free 5GB is genuinely constraining your Apple backups or photos, or when its included privacy, email, invitation and HomeKit features replace services you would otherwise pay for. Start with 50GB, move to 200GB for a shared household, and reserve 2TB or larger plans for measured high-volume use. If you remain under 5GB or already have sufficient Google or Microsoft storage, keep your money and reassess after your usage changes.

Will buying iCloud+ make my iPhone’s local storage larger?
No. iCloud+ increases cloud capacity, not the physical storage built into the iPhone. It can give backups and synced data more room, but it does not add gigabytes to the device itself or guarantee faster performance.
Can family members share an iCloud+ plan without seeing each other’s files?
Yes, the subscription provides a shared capacity pool while each person continues using an individual Apple account. Sharing storage does not mean automatically combining personal photos, documents or backups.
Do I have to move my existing photos before upgrading?
No manual move is required simply to increase the allowance. After the plan changes, your Apple devices can continue using the same iCloud photo and backup setup, subject to your settings and available capacity.
Is a 2TB plan excessive for one person?
Often, but not always. A solo user who records substantial video, keeps multiple device backups or maintains a large original-quality library may use it; check the storage breakdown and projected growth before committing to the higher monthly charge.
